No Star Power For ASB Classic
24/11/2004 08:00 PM NewstalkZB

The field has been revealed for January's ASB Bank tennis classic in Auckland, but there will be no top 20 players involved.

Veteran American Amy Frazier will be the top seed. Frazier is ranked 26th in the world.

Nineteen-year-old Serbian Jelena Jankovic will be seeded second - she is 28th in the world rankings.

Five other players in the field are in the top 50 - they are defending champion Eleni Daniilidou (34), Shinobu Asagoe (37), Marion Bartoli (41), Kristina Brandi (48) and Maria Vento-Kabchi (49).

ASB Tennis Classic director Richard Palmer says the Auckland tournament still has a strong field despite not having any top 20 players.

Palmer says players outside the top 20 bracket are getting better every year.

He thinks the field will almost always be made up of players ranked in the 40s, 50s and 60s, but it is a lot harder to be ranked there now than it was a couple of years ago.

Palmer says the Auckland event has to compete with Australia's Hopman Cup, which attracts the cream of the tennis crop.

He says to make matters worse there is a new exhibition tournament in Hong Kong with six top 20 players.

Palmer says Jelena Jankovic has a sound record this year, having beaten five or six players in the top twenty.

Kiwi junior Marina Erakovic has been granted a wild card with the possibility that a top 50 player could receive another.

Amy should win this tournament. She had an absolutely unbelievable record in '04 against players who were ranked below her (30-2). On the flip side, she was 4-15 against players ranked above her lol, but there are none of this in this event.

She'll have some tough competition obviously with Danilidou and Jankovic, but Frazier seems to have a firm grasp on the other top seeds like Brandi and Asagoe
