Organisers today proudly announced details of the Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2005. The President of the Hong Kong Tennis Patrons' Association revealed four of the eight top stars that will feature in next year's annual event.

In his speech, Mr. Colvin Brown said, “With immense pride, I am delighted to reveal that we have secured three Grand Slam champions and the World's No. 1 player to compete in our event. The Watsons Water Champions Challenge does indeed feature CHAMPIONS, and as you have seen in our press show, the four players we are thrilled to announce are:

2004 Wimbledon Champion – Maria Sharapova
2004 US Open Champion – Svetlana Kuznetsova
Four Time Grand Slam Singles Champion – Venus Williams
World No. 1 – Amelie Mauresmo
This is a field of dynamic stars, and fans will be privileged to see so many great players in action at our annual event.”

The President went on to explain that the Mixed Men's & Ladies Event from 2004 could not be repeated. “As neither Roger Federer nor Andy Roddick were available to head up a Men's field, we felt fans would be happier if we could secure many of the top women instead. I'm proud our Tournament Director Terry Catton has managed to do just that and we will also be privileged to see two new champions, with World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo making her first appearance in Hong Kong, and 2004 US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova doing the same. Fans will naturally be delighted to see the powerful and charismatic Venus Williams back in action. And even the casual sports observer will now have heard of the glamorous Russian Maria Sharapova who won Wimbledon this year. She has just also won back to back tournaments in Asia , the Korea Open and the Japan Open, and we know she loves coming to Hong Kong . Maria is the hottest player in the world and she's already crossed the sports pages into the entertainment columns and has instantly become a celebrity icon. Hong Kong is proud to be inviting Maria back.”

Steve Tong, General Manager of Watsons Water said, “This is our sixth year of sponsoring the tennis tournament. Once more we are delighted to be the title sponsor of such a high quality event. We're excited at the prospect of seeing so many Grand Slam champions in Hong Kong , and I think we must be the envy of many tournaments around the world to have secured this number of top players in our field. We believe that our coming tournament would be the hottest international sports event in Hong Kong in January 2005. Watsons Water remains committed to sports in this community and beyond, and our brand certainly continues to be a popular provider of dehydration solution to local and international events. Our association with marquee names and prestigious sporting brands has underlined our leading position in Hong Kong .”

The Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2005 will be played over four days at the Victoria Park Tennis Stadium on January 5th, 6th, 7th& 8th. The event will feature eight world-class female players competing in a Singles & Doubles competition.

This is the perfect tournament to start the year for her. She is playing singles and doubles and plays the other top players so she will no what she has to face when she tries for the Aussie Open title. And Awesome a live web cam, What a great way to start the year doing a live coverage of Maria's match.

SINGLES:

Red Group {
Maria Sharapova
Elena Dementieva
Nicole Vaidišová
}
Green Group {
Svetlana Kuznetsova
Venus Williams
Vera Zvonareva
}

Each player plays the other two players in her group on a round-robin basis, with the winner of the Red Group playing the winner of the Green Group in the final.

I hope for a Maria v Vera final. It's always a high-quality match when they play each other, with Vera's tremendous fighting spirit and amazing retrieval skills providing the perfect foil for Maria's spectacular power-game of many winners.

DOUBLES: Semi-finals:

Maria Sharapova/Vera Zvonareva vs Svetlana Kuznetsova/Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario
Serena Williams/Venus Williams vs Elena Dementieva/Nicole Vaidišová

It's nice to see Vera as Maria's doubles partner, having replaced Amélie Mauresmo.

there was something bothering her around the left hip.

also this is a round robin format like the WTA YEC, so a loss doesn't mean she's out. At least AFAIK.

i didnt notice any problems to do with the hip?:confused:
although it is a round robin format, i cant see dementieva losing tonight, however it would be brilliant if she did!
The important thing is maria has at least one more match to build some confidence ahead of the aus open.

Can anyone explain to me what these ladies in Hong Kong are actually competing for, if this is just an exhibition? The "appearance" money wouldn't be the same for everyone, but it would be substantial enough for all of them to want to show up and play. But showing up is all they will do if that is all that's required. Wouldn't it have made more sense to make it a "Challenge", with big money actually going to the winner, making it more of a real competition?

andrewbroad
Jan 6th, 2005, 04:08 AM
A bad day all round for me at the Watson's Water Challenge exhibition-tournament in Hong Kong:

Round Robin (Red Group):
- Maria Sharapova lt. Elena Dementieva, 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 6-1
(Green Group):
- Vera Zvonareva lt. Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-3 6-3

Doubles semi-final:
- Maria/Vera lt. Kuznetsova/Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, 8-3

Maria was tired, apparently, while Vera served 8 double-faults in her singles.

Losing to Dementieva is really disappointing after Maria had beaten Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams in recent exhibitions. Dementieva is ranked #6 to Maria's #4, but I can't understand how she got to the finals of two Grand Slams with a serve like popcorn and, from what I saw in the French Open final, having a tendency to freeze on the big occasion.

Maria will next play Nicole Vaidišová on Friday. I think Vaidišová is going to be an extremely dangerous opponent to players like Maria... in a couple of years perhaps. She's already so tall and strong that it's unbelievable she won't even turn 16 until 23rd April! Vaidišová may already be a threat to players as good as Tatiana Golovin, but something would have to go badly wrong for Maria to lose to her now. Maria had her wake-up call today; on Friday she should swat Vaidišová like a fly.

But I'll certainly be supporting Vaidišová against Dementieva on Thursday, because if Dementieva wins twice then Maria is out! If they all win once, presumably it will be a matter of who wins the highest percentage of sets or even games, that determines who qualifies for Saturday's final.

Bad though the results were for me, the girls did do a glamourous off-court photo-shoot! :drool:

Hey guys, just1 thing to remember, Elena is a great player (results speak for themselves, she reached 2 Slam finals in '04) And im guessing this was not the most high profile match; Dementieva tends to play better in front of the smaller crowds. It's a shame, but Maria will get over it. Btw, how is her return of serve? I thought Maria is one player in particular who could punish the dementieva serve...

Never mind, she will come out of the experience a better player, she has a way with defeats ;)

andrewbroad
Jan 8th, 2005, 04:58 AM
Sadly, Maria pulled out of the tournament on Friday with a stomach-virus. With nine days to go before the start of the Australian Open, I trust that this is nothing serious.

"Last night I got a stomach-virus. The doctor checked me out, and this morning I was very weak."

Maria's chances of reaching the final had ended on Thursday anyway, when Nicole Vaidišová withdrew from the tournament with gastroenteritis. This meant that Dementieva beat Vaidišová by default to qualify for the final, for which Maria could only have qualified if Vaidišová had beaten Dementieva, and if Maria had beaten Vaidišová on Friday.

I agree it's great to see her doing so much to help the crisis, and I know this may be off topic but I thought I should post the website for the relief effort donations. https://www.donate.bt.com/bt_form_dec.htm

I watched the extra doubles match the night Maria and Nicole were supposed to play. It featured Vera and Nicole on one side and Venus and Arantxa on the other. Apparently because she had a singles final the following day, Venus left after the first set, and Elena took over. Venus/Elena-Arantxa beat Vera-Nicole in straight sets.

I was watching Nicole and the commentators were in agreement that her service is one of the best in the game. What was remarkable about Nicole's serve, they observed, was its fluidity. Almost in one motion. Nicole generates so much pace while not really having to take a whack at the ball like Maria or Venus or any other hard server does. And because she doesn't visibly pound the ball, her serve is well-disguised.

Like an illness that can be caught through the air, and it attcks some cells in your body and makes you ill, like a cold.

Your body produces Anti Bodies which defeat the virus!
