OK you wear a white outfit with a white underneath in a few of the pics where the skirts come up you can actually see too much, and im not going in to detail. and another thing that bugs me why do girls tennis players nips show through when their sweating i've never understood that. just a confused 17 yr old guy ecspecially amount maria's choice of outfit. i know we already had the period discussion, but you can see more that that!!!! why would she choose to wear that knowing pics photographers are gonna take? she shows so much ass haha i have no problem but keep it to red or black not white.

I think Maria should wear strings underneath her outfits  . All the men in the grandstand would go nuts (and probably some women too) :woohoo: , then no one would notice yuri's antics and coaching anymore  !!!

I think it's quite a fair question, or questions (although I'm not sure about the 2 questions title). Athletic wear in general has become more body hugging, and not only in swimming :D but also in track and field, volleyball and tennis, among others. have you seen what women runners wear nowadays? they can no longer be called "shorts", they're even more high cut than most bikinis. there are a lot of reasons for that, there's streamlining for track, where speed counts. there's also comfort, not only are the current designs devoid of excessive, obstrusive flaps, pockets etc. which might impede movement, they're also more breathable, which keeps the athlete cool.

Having said all that, I still wonder how "fashion" in sports wear is driven. Baseball players used to wear loose clothes, those classic "men who wear flannel suits" pictures in black and white will give you the idea. Since the 1970's, baseball uniforms have gotten tighter and tighter. Meanwhile, in basketball, at least on the men's side, shorts reached an almost "too short" stage during the Larry Bird-Kevin McHale years in the mid-80's, only to go the baggy route with Michael Jordan, and on into this current "too long" state, where hems go well past the knee. The needs of basketball players for comfort, freedom of movement and breathability have not changed, and yet their shorts have been lengthening and lengthening. Go figure.

In the case of tennis, there's never been a standard or "uniform" wear, AFAIK, in fact, only in Wimbledon does still exist a guideline for "generally white" outfits. In all other tournaments, you can wear any color. As far as design, no rules.
You only have to watch the Borg-McEnroe matches to see the variety of designs, even then. But it gets even muddier on the women's side, where decades ago, people were scandalized by the first appearance of bloomers and shorts. Now, in the MTV world, we have players like Maria Sharapova wearing a strappy dress that is really nothing more than what women wear in bed. As the father of Alicia Silverstone says in "Clueless", "that's not a dress, that's lingerie!", or underwear, or something like that, I have to watch the movie again :) if only to see Alicia before she got fat.

Do they do it consciously, using the "sex sells" philosophy? I don't know. But women nowadays are more comfortable with their sexuality, and we cannot really deny them the right to express that.

As for the nipples "printing", well, something tells me they cannot really wear pads, for obvious weight reasons. Pads, wherever placed to protect a woman athlete's modesty, unfortunately add weight to the outfit, and break up the streamlining in some. Like I said at the beginning, athletic wear has been going the minimalist route to give the athlete every advantage he/she could get. Unibody suits for sprinters eliminated those thick elastic bands at the shorts and improved aerodynamics overall, but in exchange for that, we got Linford Christie's famous box (the Brits in the forum just beamed with pride). In the case of women, we have nipples (and sometimes, so much more) everywhere, and not just in tennis.

When you really think about it, it isn't as bad as in the original Greek Olympics, when athletes competed in the nude.
