Hingis - 97 Philly
Basuki - 98 Birmingham (SF and Final were rained out, but she's still considered part winner)
Probably many times in the ancient days, when the defending champion only played in the final. Where are you?

Off the top of my head I remember this happening twice in 1997.

Amanda Coetzer won in Luxembourg, playing 3 setters every round :
She beat :

R2 - Farina Elia 6-2 3-6 6-3
QF - Oremans 7-5 6-7 6-4
SF - Studenikova 6-1 3-6 6-0
F - Paulus 6-4 3-6 7-5

Hingis won Philadelphia the same way in '97 :
She beat :

R2 - Appelmans 6-2 4-6 6-2
QF - Huber 7-6 5-7 6-4
SF - Sanchez Vicario 1-6 7-6 6-3
F - Davenport 7-5 6-7 7-6

Thanks. :)

Although it would be nice to find one where the winner played 5 or even more matches. ;)

Where's my respect?
Ah, it's you. :) Sorry, I'm a bit slow today.

Thanks for your first example.
Your next two examples suck.

Yayuk Basuki is a minority, and speaking of her in a derogatory manner is means for banishment. I will report this to the authorities.
Isn't Basuki Asian? There are plenty of them.

"Them" is very insulting to my race, and I will report this to the authorities again.
You are one of them? :)
