Who do you think will retire next year?
Or should retire?

twight6
Nov 18th, 2004, 12:14 PM
capriati (should but probably won't), lindsay (although she shouldn't)

2005 will be Els Callens's last season...

I think Monica will though I'm hoping she
can come back and play a little on the
tour before doing so.

Monica Seles (she said she'd make a decision by January, and her most strenous workout since Jun 03 seems to have been soft tennis with John McEnroe on the river Thames)Conchita Martinez, unless she has a fantastic clay court season - which is unlikely to happen again (although we've been thinking that for years now)

I can't see Jennifer Capriati retiring yet. I think she'll play through 2005, at least until 2006. That said, if she has a disastrously bad run early in the year, who knows.

Lindsay Davenport has already said she certainly won't be playing in 2006, so she's obviously on the list.

Mary Pierce? Perhaps. She said she felt she still had something in her, which I thought was telling. But going by her form this autumn, it doesn't seem like it's results. Maybe she means coaching? Or improved French?

Martina Navratilova? Not a chance.

Chanda Rubin's been battling injuries for years now. She's used to being a part-timer. If Chanda ever played a full year she wouldn't know what had hit her, so to speak. Up to her whether she wants to fight through another year. I think she will.

Would have said Elena Likhovtseva had it not been for her resurgence late in the year.

Magdalena Maleeva? Possibly. Depends how she does on indoor courts next autumn, although if she's going to retire she'll probably have decided by then. She'll be 30 next year. Doubt she'll retire yet though.

Silvia Farina-Elia is a strong possibility. She began the year very well, but faded badly in the second half. If she loses all her points early in the year and her ranking drops outside the top 35, will she fancy climbing all the way back up at 33? I doubt it.

I would say Jelena....:(

Duramont
Nov 18th, 2004, 02:25 PM
I've heard Magdalena Maleeva would retire but don't know if it is true!

Conchita Martinez will probably retire also.

I'm sure that Lindsay Davenport will retire next year for sure (she wants to win a Grand Slam and than retire, so if it is the Australian Open... ;) ) and Barbara Schett after the Australian Open.

I think thats what people want...although she's not winning like she use to...she's still a big threat on the tour. Well like somebody said Davenport said she's not playin in 2006 so look like she's retiring and I think Seles is too....I do hope to see her play this year though...I miss ole Monica and all of that yelling .

in order of probability

Davenport
Seles
Maleeva
Pierce
Martinez
Rubin
Farina

(a lot of players to lose in one year)

Capriati, Ai and Likhovseva are likely to play through the '06 season, they don't look be losing steam the way the others do.

Well if Venus is contented with 4th round of slams and 2 titles in one year, then dont retire otherwise, retire than humiliate yourself. I cant see Venus on top again. The girl played 17 tournaments in 2004 and did'nt even qualify in YEC.

JennyS
Nov 18th, 2004, 10:05 PM
Jen isn't even thinking about retirement, and has said that she would like to play for at least a few more years.

Could ya imagine the WTA tour without Jen and Lindsay? Would lose my two favorite players. Don`t know what to say. I fear that day. Image Venus and Serena also retire, what would the WTA tour be with all the horrible Sharapovas and Henin-Hardennes... :scared: I think I hate tennis then...

Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi.....where will our tennis go now? We have one good junior player but shes about to join the army and our only other good pro is afraid to play WTA Tournaments so her ranking is low..

Kim Clijsters - she has problems with her healthy and it is not going to improve, it seems. She will be fed up with the injuries and retire from professional tennis with playing no tournaments next season.

In addition she will make a couple with Lleyton again and they will get a children next November. Her name will be Nancy.

I hope this will not happen.. :wavey:

Albireo

Probably
Davenport
Seles
Kournikova
Martinez
Pierce
Maleeva

Three Hall-of-famers, possibly four. That's a lot of prestige for the WTA to lose in one year.

i don't think kournikova will "retire"
it's still hot for her to be tennis associated and without retiring

Well if Venus is contented with 4th round of slams and 2 titles in one year, then dont retire otherwise, retire than humiliate yourself. I cant see Venus on top again.

That's about 95% than the rest of the tour, should they retire as well? Heck, everyone outside the top 10 should retire, I mean why do they want to humiliate themselves?

Possibly Amy Frazier. Despite her great success in 2004, she may or may not repeat that in 2005. I think the grind of traveling is finally catching up to her but than who knows.......

I think a lot will retire in the 2/3 next years, and life on WTA Tour won't be the same without all rthe "veterans"
Davenport
Maleeva
Seles
Martinez
Pierce
Farina
Rubin
Callens
Frazier etc...

All the players you've all mentionned won't retire in 2005 (I hope so) but in a few years there won't be one of 'em left, and when it will happen, I think I'll be bored by tennis...

99,9999% sure:

Pierce

May be:

Rubin
Vento-Kabchi
Maleeva

Venus Williams

I've heard it from reliable sources, that Venus is ready to hand up her racket. Her body is too worn out to continue through two weeks of tennis such as the one you see at Grand Slams. Too bad, because we'll miss her if she does.

Old_Folk
Nov 29th, 2004, 09:22 PM
Oh? Venus is retiring? Wow....But not winning slams for so long probably made her a bit disappointed with herself. But it's okay, maybe it's time to focus on something else in life for her.

miranda_lou
Nov 29th, 2004, 10:06 PM
I think Chanda will retire next year. Her body just can't take anymore. I think she will give it a go in the early part of the year but if she doesn't do well at the Aussie and on the American hard courts, she just might give it up completely and concentrate on her charity.

Next year is Lindsay's final year and I don't think she'll change her mind. She wants babies.

Maggie will retire, maybe before the season begins, because she just seems BORED!! Her husband had stopped traveling with her a while ago, according to an interview she gave on the Tennis Channel, and I can't see her traveling around the world alone while her hubby sits at home. What's the point?

Conchita NEEDS to retire since she doesn't appear to want to play anymore. Oh, wait, that's Conchita's usual look on the court. Maybe she'll compromise and play only doubles.

I don't know why Mary Pierce continues to torture her body trying to play. It's too pathetic and I can't bear to watch anymore. I think she'll try again next year but, if things continue to fall apart, she'll just hang it all up.

Anna K. is already retired. She said as much during the "Smash Hits" exhibition she played last month in California. Nobody noticed, though. At that exho, Andre Agassi took off his shirt and got more whistles than Anna.

I don't know about Venus but I really can't see her doing all the traveling necessary and having nothing but 4th round losses and a ranking outside the top 15 to show for it. I think she has too much pride for that. If Venus feels that she can't make a run at a Slam then she'll quit. I hope it doesn't happen and she gets her confidence back and makes a good run, but I just don't see it happening.
