Hi All

We are lucky in Melbourne, Australia to have a gay radio station called Joy Melbourne. As part of their schedule they have a sports program called " Good Sports" , to my surprise last night Nicole Pratt co hosted the entire program. To be slightly surprised is to put it mildly. The issues regarding sexuality were not canvassed which was rather surprising on a gay radio station. Here is a brief summary of what she said.

- Tennis is 90% mental
- Hard to form friendships with fellow players
- Alicia Molik will be a top 10 player within the next couple of months
- The Russian domination of the tour will continue and will expand..
- Elena Dementieva is the best athlete in women's tennis.
- Maria Sharapova is the real deal.
- Nadia Petrova is likely to be the next russian to win a grand slam.
- The William sisters won't regain their top positions in the game as they have to many technical flaws in their game.
- Williams sisters are not gracious in defeat but they are improving
- When she retires which is in about 3 years wants to coach.
- Nicole Vaidisova is the future of the game
- Eleni Daniilidou very talented but has not lived up to true potential.
- Believes that Monica would have been the greatest ever player if not for the stabbing.
- Believed that Daniela Hantuchova was anorexic last year.
- 2000 Olympics in Sydney was the highlight of her career.
- Many players find Arantxa Sanchez annoying.
- Believed Mark Phillipoussis can win a grand slam if he puts the effort in.

It was a great 2hrs and hopefully they will have some more tennis players in the lead up to the Ozzie Open.

Cheers,

What the hell would she know about what it takes to get to the top of the game?Yep. Because as we all know, only as a former no.1 ranked player you are allowed to voice your opinion on other players.
And of course, all coaches of current/former no.1 ranked players have been no.1 ranked players themselves. :)

Since she does play Professional Tennis and works day in and day out with her "co-workers" ie: Tennis Players. She Would happen to know quite a bit.

good old pratt... ill never forget that shot she hit against lindsay i think last year in sydney... she was running from the forehand side, from the tramlines, to a shot that lindsay whacked down the middle, and she hit this backhand from there that was so weird and unusual that went into lindsay forehand side and hit the tramline... it was like in slow motion as if lindsay was thinking "wtf was that" :hearts: good shot nicole :bounce:

but nicole prob does no a lot and remember, as she said at the beginning of the aussie circuit at the beginning of this year, she's expected now to make the 4th round at grand slam events ;)

- Tennis is 90% mental
Well 70% at least.
- Hard to form friendships with fellow players
yes. Since they're all rivals.
- Alicia Molik will be a top 10 player within the next couple of months
Have to agree :)
- The Russian domination of the tour will continue and will expand..
Probably. Depends on how well the Belgians, Serena and Amelie perform.
- Elena Dementieva is the best athlete in women's tennis.
As an athlete, definately. At the heptathlon, I'm sure Elena would triumph over the rest.
- Maria Sharapova is the real deal.
Absolutely!
- Nadia Petrova is likely to be the next russian to win a grand slam.
Hmmm. Definitely in Doubles. In singles she needs more consistency.
- The William sisters won't regain their top positions in the game as they have to many technical flaws in their game.
people have been saying that for a long time. But will to win counts for a lot. I don't think they'll dominate the tour again though.
- Williams sisters are not gracious in defeat but they are improving
Getting more practice  No. But they are getting more gracious on court.
- When she retires which is in about 3 years wants to coach. Good idea
- Nicole Vaidisova is the future of the game
I agree Nicole is a coming star.
- Eleni Daniilidou very talented but has not lived up to true potential.
Obvious
- Believes that Monica would have been the greatest ever player if not for the stabbing.
No one can say. She had a LOT of competition in Steffi.
- Believed that Daniela Hantuchova was anorexic last year
The evidence points that way.
- 2000 Olympics in Sydney was the highlight of her career.
Of MANY careers.
- Many players find Arantxa Sanchez annoying.
The same number that believe that tennis balls are round.
- Believed Mark Phillipoussis can win a grand slam if he puts the effort in.

If the mad Croat can do it, Phiilpousis can do it.

Thanks for the report on the broadcast, JB!

- Alicia Molik will be a top 10 player within the next couple of months
I agree.
- Nadia Petrova is likely to be the next russian to win a grand slam.
I disagree.
- The William sisters won't regain their top positions in the game as they have to many technical flaws in their game.
I disagree with that. An injured Serena was two games away from beating Sharapova who Nicole deems the 'real deal'. Anyone who thinks a 100% healthy and hungry Serena couldn't get back to the top given time is wrong. I don't see anything technically flawed about Serena's game. Venus could do with ironing out a couple of technical flaws though.
Many players find Arantxa Sanchez annoying.
ASV must be crying into her millions at this

:haha: Someone tell ASV this! "Nicole who?" might be the answer. ASV doesn't find it hard to make friends on the tour - Sveta, Martina N, Steffi, Monica, Mary, Daniela, Magui, Conchita, etc. - and yet Nicole finds it hard to make friends. Maybe she should think about that when talking about who's annoying :tape: I hope they end up facing each other in doubles next year - Nicole might find ASV even more annoying after yet another defeat to her.

Nicole, she sounds like she's letting her personal feelings get in the way of actual analysis

I wish Nicole would keep her mouth shut about other players, Arantxa has a lot more friends and respect from other tour players than most could ever hope to have.

Also, Serena was 2 games away from winning the tour championship but she can't get back to the top

She just sounds bitter to me.

Her opinions on V&S and the best players in the game don't mean anything to me b/c she is NOT one. She is a good player but she's not in a very good position to judge other players who she can't possibly match up with.

isn't nicole pratt like the president of the player commision or something like that? i remember pam said before that nicole had the most knowledge of any player of how the tour works, its ins and outs and the most about the players. shes allegedly very observant and not afraid to speak her mind.

or am i thinking of some other player pam was talking about?

I think she was, unintentionally so. Her parents got divorced that year and she said it put a huge toll on her, to the point where she couldn't even eat properly. The fact she wasn't really eating during this time, whether or not it was unwillingly (ie she was basically starving herself) means she was anorexic.

She isn't now though, so it's a moot point. Nicole basically said that just as much.

For people whom disagree with what Pratt said some point and how would you know Sanchez-Vicario was annoying? That's because you're NOT a tennis professional player like Pratt! There are no right or wrong answers so, let voice her opinion whatever she want to.

Yep. Because as we all know, only as a former no.1 ranked player you are allowed to voice your opinion on other players. Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you actually know what the hell you're talking about. If she knew so much about what it takes to get to the top of the game, then why has she never been able to get herself there?
And of course, all coaches of current/former no.1 ranked players have been no.1 ranked players themselves. :)It's the athlete that actually performs, not the coach. So just because the athlete is good, doesn't mean the coach is.

ehh maybe because she didn't have the skills necessary to get to the top - doesn't mean she doesn't know what those skills are, but there's only so much you can do to your body. ie Coetzer - she was small, so at a disadvantage. She chose to get really fit to help improove her game BUT her height was still a very big disadvantage to getting to the highest rung (ie #1) of tennis!

I am really surprised at the reactions of some fellow posters. I really didn't expect such negativity. It was a great 2hrs and she came across as a very intelligent human being with some really interesting things to say. I don't think she said anything that was out of line or that hasn't been posted here before.. She just gave an inside view and I imagine that some people can't handle that.

Would have been great if she had some inside gossip but I presume she must have told her fellow broadcasters that she wasn't their to titillate the listeners. She didn't out herself but I think it is safe to presume what team she bats for !!!

Joy FM is a great radio station...
