Chirs Evert was the first player who became no.1 on the 3rd of November 1975, when the WTA-ranking was released for the first time ever.

Then followed:

2. Martina Navratilova (2nd player ever)
3. Tracy Austin
4. Steffi Graf
5. Monica Seles
6. Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario
7. Martina Hingis
8. Lindsay Davenport
9. Jennifer Capriati
10. Venus Williams
11. Serena Williams
12. Kim Clijsters
13. Justine Henin-Hardenne
14. Amelie Mauresmo
15. ?

You can vote for more than one if you're not sure. ;)

Here is a link, where you can follow the WTA-ranking history till 1998, when Lindsay became the Queen of Tennis. :)

If Sharapova has a great first six months to 2005 it could well be her. To a lesser extent Kuznetsova if she starts the year in top form.

The other players have quite a few points to defend except for Venus, Serena & Jennifer who could all make a surge back up the top 10 with good results. I was glad to see those 3 end the year in the top 10.

maria Sharapova? She once said that it's her ultimate goal.. when she was a precocious 15 yr old.. i thought she was been arrogant and too ambitious.. but the goal so very attainable now.. :> . .

All can't become the 15th number one ;) the question is who will become first the 15th number one, someone who was never on top before.

I really believe that Nastya can pull it off, she should be on three/four months from now on.

Masha also has a good chance, but somehow I have the feeling (and hope!) that Nastya will be first russian no1.

If she will play like she did at the Indian Wells tourney in 2002 then yes. ;)

I think that if Maria can consistently play at the level she's capable of, then she'd be pretty hard to stop. Myskina would be the only other challenger, but she needs consistency, too. So whoever is more consistent of those two.

Their Grand Slam results this year:

Myskina (#3 in the world)

AO... QF
RG... Won
WI... 3R
US... 2R

Sharapova (#4 in the world)

AO... 3R
RG... QF
WI... Won
US... 3R

Sharapova actually went slightly better than Myskina in the Grand Slams (just) and at the AO/RG she was definately below Maykina's level of play. Maria has less points to defend early next year so she can close the gap quicker I think.
