View Full Version : Ai in 2005!

I hope this coming year will be better for Ai, she did really well to stay inside the top 20 in the world for the second year in a row!

Unlike last year Ai doesn't have as many big points to defend so she'll be able to make up a lot of ground from Sydney to Eastbourne. GOOD LUCK AI!!! :bounce:

she just mentioned about the gold coast as her opening tournament of 2005.
I am sure she'll play Sydney, AO, and Toray after that.

I am so excited whom she'll play doubles with!!

I don't understand why Ai would want to play in Filderstadt and not Tokyo instead. She's never done well in Germany before, bar that QF appearence at the 1998 German Ladies Open.

She needed some points because of all of the points that she had to defend. So she played the bigger tourney this year.

Ai's draw in Sydney is a nightmear...with Golovin in the first round and possiblt Stosur in the second...then she would have to play Davenport (who also has a tricky second round)

GO AI!!!

She's also playing doubles with Dementieva here!

After Toray-PPO, she's flying to Italy for the treatment of her foot.

Hope she gets better!!

ex hopman

She went to Firenze, Italia...to receive laser treatment for her foot.
Claudio Pistolesi (Takao Suzuki's coach, Anna Smashnova's ex husband?) recommended Ai to go there.

According to the doctor, Ai's foot will be fully recovered within 3 days (from Feb 16th?).

Ai mentioned that she had never been injured that big before... so she didn't know really how to deal with it while playing... (maybe other players play matches with some injuries... )

Well, anyway, so if the doc is right.
This week's Ai should be great!!

Good luck, Ai!! Not that bad draw!!

Though Ai lost a heartbreaker to Frazier, she smartly entered the "Eastborne Cup" which is like a consolation tourney to get more match practice. She beat Cara Black in the first round 6-3, 6-3 and now plays Kristina Brandi in the next round. This is wexactly what Ai needs, a boost in confidence! GO AI!

Did anyone know that Ai was thinking about retirement

I found an article on Yahoo after Ai defeated world No.4 Kuznetsova 2-6 6-4 6-3

but it looks like Ai now has the determination to do well

A one-time member of the world top 10, Sugiyama's level has also dropped. At the end of last year when her standard began to fall, she thought about retiring.

"I'd lost my energy and my motivation," said Sugiyama, who reached her first quarter-final of the year.

But Sugiyama hired a new hitting partner, Italy's Simone Amorico, and is also travelling full time with a fitness trainer.

"My goal is to get back into the top 10. My fitness is getting better (and) with the new team I'm getting my confidence back," she said. "I don't to end my career not playing at the level I'm capable of."

I think Ai also mentioned retirement sometime in 2000 when she ended the year outside the top 30.

Ai won a tough three-setter today against Bondarenko 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. She was up a break several times in the first set but let it slip away...Finally she's winning these long three setters. Next she plays Pastikova who she played last fall in Europe I believe and lost liek 6-3, 6-2 or something, but that was during that horrible string of losses to sub-par players. Now she should move through this match. Pastikova really doesn't have anything to hurt Ai with and Ai's confidence is improving almost every week! GO AI!

Ai had a nice first round win over Akiko Morigami 7-6(4), 6-4...too bad she had to beat Akiko but it's a very good win for Ai. AND, in a great bit of luck for Ai, Lindsay Davenport pulled out! Ai was supposed ot play Davenport next but now because of the pull-out Ai will play Ana-Lena Groenfeld! Ai beat Groenfeld easily earlier this year on the green clay so I expect Ai to win this match soundly. It's a great match-up for her against an erratic, hard-hitter with not great movement. GO AI!

i respect that you are a big asian supporter(maybe the biggest on board here.. ),and i am a big ai fan too,but on one point,i have to intervene:to call anna-lena "a erratic hard-hitter,with no great movement"is a bit far off the mark IMO!!she showed at the UO,that she can keep up with a lot of them, with her way of playing!!so,it would be nice to stay objective, even if you are on the other ones side..

I didn't say that she wasn't any good, she's verrry good but the reason that she hasn't moved up the ranks higher is because she has been erratic in matches and her movement has been suspect. I think she's a very good player, I like her a lot it's just that she isn't as consistent with her power as some higher ranked power hitters are. I didn't mean to put you off!!

PS Ai lost, strange loss though because it was a relatively weak scoreline.....just when you thikn she's back together she loses a nondescript match like this...

I think she's a very good player, I like her a lot it's just that she isn't as consistent with her power as some higher ranked power hitters are. I didn't mean to put you off!!

PS Ai lost, strange loss though because it was a relatively weak scoreline.....just when you thikn she's back together she loses a nondescript match like this...
no,thats ok,buddy!i did not want to put you off, either.i am happy about any "normal"poster in here, you know, what i mean, right?(or who..)
i think ani-baby is learning all the time, and she has the definite potential to go much further.and although i have not ONE german girl in my "tennis-family"(as you can see below),i am of course very excited and proud on her progress!
and with ai..yeah,its..i really dont know!all in all,i think she can be very satisfied with the last couple of months, but from time to time, somehow she falls in that hole...but i would not,as many here like to do,blame it on her age, thats a silly argument to me,because there are enough "grown"women at the moment, who can keep up every bit with the youngsters!look at mary pierce, for example:shes just grand!and no one would even think about her age, when she plays like that.so,i really dont know, what it is with ai.but maybe,we should just accept, that NO player can win ANY match all the time,so...she will be back, i know!

  ai-baby!!

Ai won her first match of Jill Craybas 5-7, 6-3, 6-1...

I think this is a very good first match because Craybas makes you hit a ton of balls and clearly Ai got better and better as the match progressed. Next she plays Martina Muller who Ai shoullld beat handily but Muller has been playing very well lately so it could be a tough one as well. Go Ai!

yeah, normally, she should have the class, but martina should not be underestimated.a few years ago,she was a big talent!

Go Ai! I still have faith that she'll keep rising again.

Think about it, earlier this year she wasn't winning ANY matches and now she's regularly winning a couple matches before losses. She'll get back to her old form and she's rounding into thats form just in time for 2006!!! GO AI!

Ai is in Zurich qualifying!! I know, it's strange to see her there. It's a strong field but also Ai entered late. I think it's good for her to play qualifying because it gets her match play practice, confidence and ranking points! All which she needs!!!!

Ai defeated Birnerova 6-4, 7-5
Ai defeated Panova 6-3, 6-3

Those are nice wins against tough players!! Next, in the final round of qualifying she plays Karatancheva who Ai destryed in San Diego in starught sets...something like 6-1, 6-2.

Ai is also playing doubles here with Daniela again!! If they play well this fall they may qualify for the YEC!!! They have a touggghhh draw with 4 seeds Molik/Kuznetsova in the first round! Winnable though...

Ai will play here in Zurich, Linz and Quebec City

Ai defeated Elenal Likhovtseva 6-1, 4-6, 7-5!!! Great win Ai! She did lead 5-3 in the third and served for it at 5-4 but who cares! I think the fact that she eventually DID close it out shows mental toughness imporvement. Likhovtseva has always been a realllly tough match up for Ai so this is a great win and it gives her great bonus points! Go Ai!!!!! She and Hantuchova also won their first round doubles match easily so that's great!

Ai defeated Gisela Dulko 6-4, 3-6, 6-2!!

Great win again for Ai!!! And in doubles she and Daniela made their YEC qualification hopes even more probable when they defeated Birnerova/Vanc 6-0, 6-2! (Black/Stubbs lost their second round match!)

Ai now plays Kveta Peschke. She's been on fire but the only time these two have played was in 1998 and Ai won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Go Ai! I think she'll win this match, it's a good match-up for her! GO AI! Great opportunity to repeat your title here in Linz!

She might also be shown on TW1 online TV....she's the second evening match after Daniela...

I don't think Golovin will make the finals....I bet it's Schnyder and Ai owns Schnyder! GO AI!

I agree I believe she has a great shot at winning both! *knocks on wood*

Ai lost a close match to Peschke 6-4, 5-7, 4-6.....She had a lot of chances but was never really far ahead...just a match she should have won and didn't....lots of wasted opportunities....hopefully she'll win the tourney in doubles though!

Hopefully, Ai wins one or two matches in Philly again.

And, nothing AI can do about it this week, but just wish... hope she and dani play in LA!

That's hard though because they're ranked only #5 and she's not playing doubles this week...

They are actually #4 because Suarez/Ruano-Pascual aren't playing and maybe #3 because Huber is still a mystery.......

They just need Likhovtseva/Zvonareva to not do well this week....

Ai won her first round match against Benesova 7-5, 6-4 which is a good win! Now she plays Mauresmo....Mauresmo has been in terrrrrible form so hopefully Ai can take advantage and get revenge for her touhg loss to her two years ago here....Go Ai! She's a got a GREAT shot to go FAR here!!! :bounce:

Yea, there's a rumor that Huber might be playing in LA...
Well, let's see Elena L/Vera and Cara/Stubbs teams this week.
