View Full Version : People were too quick to knock V&S and now fans seem quick to knock Masha.

I feel that over the years alot of tennis fans were too quick to criticise the Williams sisters because most of the time it was unjustified and the Williams sisters fans felt the criticisms weren't fair and so often on the tennis message boards. But now it seems that alot of tennis fans and some Williams sisters fans are unfairly criticising Maria Sharapova. The question is why? Maybe I'm not seeing the situation clearly but I think I am. It just seems that people and some Williams fan knock Sharapova for unfair reasons the way Venus and Serena were knocked when they were starting out on the WTA Tour and that's too bad.

Is the disliking of Masha only limited to V&S fans? Other than them is she universally loved by all fans? Wow.

What I find interesting, and this is just an observation is that the same people knocking V&S are having fits that Masha is being knocked. Hypocrisy is the key word of the WTA forum

Kiwi, I try to read before I draw my own conclusions. And I in general get along with everyone on the boards. Maybe the anti Masha sentiment is more widepsread than I think but I don't like seeing good tennis fans and Williams supporters treat Maria the way the Willaims sisters have been treated and that's with alot of unfair criticism.

cat, this is a trashy post because you are assuming and making and outrageous conclusion that ONLY Williams fans dislike Maria.

Dont try to come up in here and tell me that V@S fans had to hear the same crap that Maria fans are going through at this moment. What the Williams sisters themselves had to hear and go through has no bearing on Maria.

Do not compare the hate that people (media) had for V@S to what people are stating on this mere message board.

Maria is get hated on cause she is good. V@S were and still are hated on cause of the NATURE of the sport of tennis.

What is to be confused about this title? Sure he or she then went on to use a lot and then some but the aim was at V&S fans. Otherwise the title would have been different.

The Williams girls tooks loads of flack and didn't really obtain superstar status until they had the results, well, Venus a little, but she took a heap of shit and it didn't really stop until she'd won a major and there were still these grumblings (among some) that they didn't have much talent and all they did was hit hard, that they were flukes, they wouldn't last, whatever. It seems the tennis public has taken quite faster to Maria, she's not nearly as ragged on as the sisters were and now that she's "made it" with the two big titles next year, she's like tennis' new darling. It took the Williams sisters longer to obtain the status as tennis' new darlings, they really had to prove it first, and had to do more than Maria has done now to obtain that status. So, I think some, and I do mean some, Williams fans are a little put off by Maria, like she hasn't had to achieve as much to get to this untouchable superstar status as the Williams had to do, and probably place race as a factor which makes them more pissed off. Perhaps it is. Venus was hyped to inter-planetary proportions before she had big results, don't get me wrong, but I think Maria has leap-frogged up to tennis royalty status faster than they did and with less results than they had to do, and it burns some of their fans.

Just treat her on her own and her own achievements. She had a fabulous year.

Pff they're just jealous.. Maria is a great player! I admire Serena.. but I hate it that she has always a bad excuse for her losses (against Maria)! Than she has to start to practise more! Maria is a great players and everybody has to be respect for her! :D

You make some fair points Dawn. It seems to me people are too quick in general to criticise players for various reasons and I stand by that.

Of course not Sju, I shouldn't have singles out the sisters fans to that extent because the anti Masha feeling is widespread and some of it does have to do with her winning.

Nov 16th, 2004, 08:04 PM
lol. quick but not as quick. the sisters were hated before they played a pro match. Sharapova is only just getting shit at 17 years of age. that's old in comparison to the WS and Hingis and Capriati and Seles

Helen speak for yourself!! First of all people dislike Maria casue she is the player who is beating players at the moment. She is young and is not supposed to be winning things quite yet.

This always happens to the NEW playes.

V@S fans had to hear negative bullshit about their tennis from day one and it was because of one reason only. People taking to Maria was a given. We the tennis world knows that if Anna would have won like Maria that it was going to be Mania!!!

The mania for a white blonde player to be a champ in the USA has been in the making like forever. Sheesh.

Don't try to sugarcoat V@S trials and tribulations with Maria's rise in the media.

A nice try folks(Helena and the cat and of course Willow) but I will personally shut this crap down. With post after post after post! LOL:)

And Serena getting hurt last night was a big story in the YEC final. But I'm glad the Los Angeles crowd cheered her the way they did because she deserved it and it must have made her feel good even though she was in pain.

Well the majority of the tennis public are not African American, hence the support for Maria.

The Williams sisters came along with the attitude 'We'll show you folks how it's done' and I think that rather incensed many fans (including neutrals).
It can be a huge shock to the ordinary white folk to have a strong talented African American lady in your face. Some have never become used to this scenario, while others have warmed, and embraced the stunning tennis that both ladies are capable of.

Of course I have emapthized with the Williams sisters, Dawn. And I've grown to like them and their family. You are right about that. I just think it's sad the sisters have been criticised so much over the years and now Masha is facing alot of criticism too. But as you point out Dawn it's a different kind of criticism because Masha's being criticised for being hyped and successful before she's supposed to be winning.

Poor Cat. It seems GM is no place for a reasoned, well thought-out discussion. Your civilized, informative posts are appreciated by most. Kudos to Venus and Serena for taking tennis into the 21st century dispite the absurd criticism that they were "bad" for the sport. I think it goes without saying that we now know the Williams sisters are absolutely great for the sport of tennis and it's sad to see how another young girl is being pilloried. I don't agree with Dawn that every successful newcomer is "hated", at least not with the amount of hate that is spewed on Maria.

When will we learn to appreciate young talent without hating?

Huh  Prior to the US Open 97, I don't recall Venus or Serena being hated. The talk about them being arrogant started after that.

And yes some people hate Sharapova. People who like her have to deal with that. When a person becomes a celebrity, people lose their objectivity toward that person. What's left is only an irrationnal feeling of love, hate or indifference.

put it this way. i knew a hell of a lot about the W/S (facts and opinions) before i'd even seen them play a pro match

everyone cant like or dislike the same person. it is sports. the people who take cheap shots though are the untrue fans, but some people just don't like masha as a player. completely understandable. people in this world usually hate the people on top, or dislike a person just because something inside of them dislikes her. its sports guy! hey, i hate the new england patriots and philadelphia eagles. why do i hate the patriots i don't know. they are a hell of a football team but i hate them. on the other hand i hate the eagles because of terrell owens. people can like who they want.

The Cat, could you imagine what the media and the tennis establishment would have said if a 17 year old Venus Williams cheered an injured opponents visibly weak double faults. She would have been dragged through the ringer, called arrogant, rude, and every other name in the book(which happened to her anyway). Imagine if Richard ran on the court and started telling security or whoever to "fuck off" on live national TV. They would have been hated above all else(which they already were). Maria and her family do it and you don't hear a peep from the media. Not yet at least.
