That is absolutely remarkable:

1998: became No. 1-ranked player on October 12 until...
1999: after the Australian Open. Then regained her 1# status after her win in Wimbledon. Only for a few weeks.
2000: After the Ericcson Open (where she lost the final in straight sets to Hingis) she regained the 1# ranking. She lost it in the Family Circle Cup (I think)
2001: YEC regained that 1# spot after winning 7-6 in the third against Clijsters. She injured herself there, so she lost her ranking in...
2002: Australian Open. Was out for 8 months.
2004: October 18 regained her 1# ranking and continues to be so until
2005: who knows....

Over 40 weeks as the Number 1 Player in the World in a 7 year period

Not bad for a player with a grand total of 3 majors and 2 other finals at the majors during that span...and even, what 2 finals at the YEC?, Impressive!!

Add to that 1 YEC won and two finals, plus over 30 titles, almost all tier II or higher. Yes, impressive indeed.

I guess when you´re the media darling those stats would be enough to make you seem a deserving no.1....

Yet funningly I know AT LEAST one other player who posted even better stats than those during that span, that has been critisized for her long tenure as no.1...funny isn´t it?

Lindsay deserved her #1 spot in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and sorry to say, if you argue that you are an idiot. Everything after that is debatable, but then again, her reign was not that long in that time. It's not comparable to Hingis, if that's what you're getting at.

Everything after 2000 is NOT debatable.....no majors is no majors. Was so for Martina H in 2000, so it is so for Lindsay anno 2001 and 2004 too. ( who´s 2000 was much much better than Lindsay´s 2004)

Can't you just congratulate Lindsay?! What is your big problem? It's not like you've even done anything comparable or similar, so who are YOU to judge her success?
This is a positive thread, so please refrain from bringing your negativism in here. Fuck off!

Oh just shut it bandabou, every positive thread about Linday you're there wasting your time, moan, moan, moan, "she hasn't reached a major final" "Nobody remembers her since the USO 2000" :retard: Just give her a break, stop moaning

Well, Davenport is okay but I doubt she deserve the #1 ranking.. If u ask me, no one deserve the #1 ranking this year as there wasn't anyone who was consistent.. Now that blank sharapova if she beats Serena tonight I could already here all the bandwagon jumpers saying she deserve #1 already.

Well even if she had accomplished that, it's still not good enough. According to him Lindsay's 1999 wasn't that impressive either.

Easy, easy....it IS an achievement. But I just hate how American media makes it seem like her 2004 or 2001 year without a major were more deserving of the no.1 than Martina´s 2000....that´s all.

would still be the same answer: it´s an achievement but don´t see her as most deserving.

In a year like 2004, who would you rather have? Of the slam winners:

Justine - Died after Indian Wells, with the exception of the Olympics.

Myskina - After RG, she struggled. 3r loss at Wimbledon, 2r loss at US Open. She didn't start picking it up until Moscow.

Sharapova - After Wimby, has a dismal summer. Before Wimby, was nothing spectacular. Did poorly at the US Open, and did not start picking up her form until late Fall.

Kuznetsova - Had some good tournaments in the Middle East, then not much. 1r Wimby loss. Average summer. Won US Open and a tier 3 following, then didn't do much of anything the rest of the year.

Now look at Lindsay:

Lindsay - 7 titles, 2 GS SF's, only lost before the semis on three occasions, only lost before the QF once. Undefeated in Tier 2 tournaments.

Who would you rather have as number one?

This year is tough.....that´s Lindsay´s problem.....consistent but not dominating at the big tournaments.

well done Lindsay great achivement and Bandabou don t bring Martina into this , you were probably raggin on her in 2000 cos she had no slams(ofcourse thats changed now) , quit trying to diss other players just cos serena isnt number one and didnt win Wimbledon, your posts are repetitve and boring.

She can have 15 tournament wins with no grand slams and still she would not be my pick as the best player in the world. Probably Henin was, she played little but where she did she played great and won a slam plus the olympics, and some other Tier II events and a Tier I. Despite i still think Lindsay would have easily won the usopen if not injured in the semis, still that slam win never came.
To be the best you have to succeed at the very best events, eg Grand Slams, Masters and the Olympics. Almost no one remmembers Lindsay ended number one in 2001 in the way they remmember the slams Jennifer and Venus won that year.
Still an acomplisment, but not to be the best player for the year.

Lindsay does deserve the year end #1 ranking. She'd have won the US Open if she wasn't injured in the semis. She had a very consistent year which was in a way similar to Martina's 2000, except she didn't win the year end and reach any slam finals.

Martina was still the ITF world champ of 2000 but I think the reason there was much debate was because Venus Williams had won 2 slams that year and had beaten Martina (in very close matches) twice.

Lindsay didn't win any slams but no other player who won slams was as dominant as Venus in 2000.

Hence Lindsay is the best player of 2004 who just didn't perform well at slams...
