Well I'm hoping she wins Sydney - I'm going to the final and it would be lovely if she got there and won it (3rd time lucky in the final @ Homebush) :)

yeah - I'm glad that Lindsay is year end #1 - a nice consolation prize!

I was cheering for Serena - she's one of my faves anyway but especially cheering for her tonight. This is strange but for the last few weeks I've had this habit of nominating someone as my "hero of the day" LOL. It can be anyone, like someone from work who does something for me to make my life easier and I'll say to them: "You're my hero of the day".

Well yesturday Lindsay was my hero of the day because she beat Serena again, but today, strangely enough Serena was "hero of the Day" for beating Mauresmo so that Lindsay can remain #1 for the end of year! I don't know why I've started doing it, but it's good fun......or maybe I'm just strange! ;)

Who will I be cheering for in the final? It'll be tough for me to choose because I like Serena, Myskina AND Sharapova (second semi wasn't desided at time of writing this). I will probably choose Serena because in a way she helped Lindsay out - just a little :p

Serena's comments about Lindsay.

Mauresmo's loss guaranteed Lindsay Davenport will retain the top spot when the year-end WTA rankings are released Tuesday.

"I'm really happy for Lindsay," said Williams, who was sidelined for eight months after knee surgery. "She's had a few tough years and to come back as number one kind of motivates me because I know she had a big knee injury as well."

Davenport Honored as Winner of 2004 Porsche Race to the Championships (http://www.wtatour.com/newsroom/stories/NewsArticle_5736_rx.asp)

November 14, 2004

Veteran pro dominated the Race with a 61-8 match record, seven Tour titles and a blistering summer hardcourt season that included a 22-match win streak

LOS ANGELES, CA – Punctuating what has been a remarkable season, veteran tennis star Lindsay Davenport is being honored Saturday during the WTA Tour Championships as the winner of the season-long Porsche Race to the Championships, which recognizes the player who performed the best during the 2004 season.

As the Race winner, Davenport, who finished the regular season with a commanding 351-point lead over Amelie Mauresmo, will be presented with a Porsche Cayenne S following her round-robin match against Serena Williams at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

This year, Davenport, 28, claimed the Race for the third time in her career with a unique blend of consistency and extraordinary performances. She posted a Tour-best 61-8 match record and won a Tour-leading seven titles, including the Toray Pan Pacific (Tokyo), the Bausch & Lomb Championships (Amelia Island), the Bank of the West Classic (Stanford), the JPMorgan Chase Open (Los Angeles), Acura Classic (San Diego), the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open (Cincinnati) and the Porsche Grand Prix (Filderstadt).

In 16 Tour events, she reached the semifinals or better 13 times, losing earlier only at the Australian Open (quarterfinals), the Family Circle Cup (quarterfinals) and the French Open (fourth round). She poured it on during the summer, sweeping four straight tournament titles (Stanford, Los Angeles, San Diego and Cincinnati) and winning 22 consecutive matches, the longest streak by any player this season.

On October 18, she regained the world’s No. 1 ranking, the sixth time in her 12-year career that she had ascended to the pinnacle of women’s tennis. By then, she had virtually clinched the Race title, leading by nearly 1,000 points and becoming the first qualifier for the season-ending WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche, which features the top eight singles players and top four doubles teams in the final Race standings.

This week, Davenport was successfully able to hold off the second-ranked Mauresmo in a battle for the year-end No. 1 ranking to finish the year at No.1 for the third time in her career.

I was torn, I so wanted Amelie to win because she deserves too and Lindsay doesn't seem to care... but I think we care!

That was a nice thing of Serena to say about Lindsay, but she made a face at the net after Amelie rushed the hand shake which I think was rude as Amelie was clearly gutted and it was all very raw....

Well done, Lindsay! You achieved so much thsi year... what did she start the year as... 9?

On to the Aussie Open!

Serena was about to say or had started to say something to Amilie, highly likely kind/encouraging words but Amilie walked off without listening to anything. I can understand each perspective; Amilie wanted to go ASAP because it was a bad loss and wasn't in the mood to hear anything, and Serena wanting to concratulate Amilie on doing so well throughout the year and for a great match.

Perhaps Serena's intentions were to be nice and so was probably a little taken aback at the fact that Amilie wouldn't grant a listening ear....or that sort of thing.

It was nice what Serena said about Lindsay! From what I gather from each of their interviews in the last few months, they have become quite good "friends" on tour. Perhaps not to the point of hanging out with eachother but definately having conversations if they see eachother about in a tournament etc.

Either way, Lindsay is number one and is likely to be #1 seed at Aus open next year! :woohoo: I'm really excited for the new year now!!

:bounce: GO LINDSAY!

Another interesting thing is that Lindsay went undefeated in Tier II's in 2004, a perfect 18-0. :)
