View Full Version : LINDSAY - A POSSIBLE PROTECTED RANKING ON RETURN?

If Lindsay is unfortunate enough (heaven forbid) to be away from the WTA tour for 6 months or more I believe she will get a protected ranking on her return. I think she would be protected for the first 6 or 7 tournaments, ie she would be seeded 1 in them all because thats where she was at the start of the year.

This happened to Steffi Graf in 1998 when she returned to the tour after being out just under a year.

I know we don't want Lindsay out any longer than necessary but this might help her if she did not return for Wimbledon.

Anyone got any thoughts on this or can add anything positive to it.

GO GO GO LINDSAY

Hi Jan :)

Some people have discussed this in the general messages area. Some people say that Lindsay could get it on her return as she was injured during a match in the end of year champs, and so out of off season training, in which case would add up to six months already.

Even if the off season doesn't count then, Lindsay returning to the tour for Eastbourne which is in June (six months into the season) should count inoder to give her the protected ranking.

Having said that, I'm not 100% sure about this rule.

bye for now,
-Rachel :)

Good info, Jan & Rach. But one thing I don't get is if she has a protected ranking during injury, why has she fallen in the rankings since the end of last year, when she was #1?

Hi there

Lindsay would get a protected ranking to enter tournaments but her points from last year have to come off as obviously she is not defending them. So you actually see her correct position in the rankings list week by week but the WTA usually rule that a player being out more than 6 months gets seeded in tournaments on their return at the position they were when they were injured. So as Lindsay was No 1 she would be seeded 2 I believe as the WTA allows the person with the Actual ranking place to take it . Sorry if that sounds muddled up, but I know what I mean, just find it difficult to explain.

Come back soon Lindsay

It's more a case of having a protected seeding, instead of a protected ranking.

For example: Lindsay was injured when she was #1, right? Say she doesn't get the protected ranking thing, and when she comes back she's ranked #15 (gasp  ). That means if she came back and played at Wimbledon, she'd be the 15th seed, and possibly would have to play the #1 or #2 seed in the round of 16 of the tournament.

If Lindsay gets the protected ranking, on the other hand, that wouldn't happen. Since Lindsay was #1 when she went out to injury, the protection would allow her to be given one of the top seedings, even if her standing in the rankings is much lower than that, and she wouldn't have to play the other top seeds until the semifinals or finals of the tournament.

In other words... even though she can't keep the actual ranking that she had before she was injured, at tournaments they would "pretend" she was still ranked that high and give her a top seeding.

I hope that makes sense. I'm like Jan... I understand what I mean, I just don't know if I'm being successful and getting others to understand it. ;) :p

I'm just wondering why Anna Kournikova didn't receive a protected ranking or seeding? She has been away for more than 6 months hasn't she? The only thing she got were wildcards and in almost every tournament she had to deal wit Venus Williams in the 2nd round!

cos anna tried to come back at san diego (in july i think...less than 6 mos. since after gaz de france) but then after playing at the acura classics, she had to take a break again. we believe she reinjured her foot. so she was out for four more months. only to return to the tour to suffer a series of first round losses until the her final event in luxembourg. had she been a little more patient, she wouldn't have reinjred herself, and she would have gotten protective seeding in tournaments.

the unlimited wildcards she gets is because she's a golden exempt player.

for lindsay i hope she doesn't come back until she's her one hundred percent self http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/kao/cactus/base.gif

we miss you lindsay!

it would be nice if she got protected ranking, but I've been thinking... it might sound a bit wierd, but would it be so bad if she didn't? what I mean is, if she dropped a little bit, even out of the top 10, I think it would only motivate her. it's been so long since she's been out of the top 10, I think it would only remind her of the time she started out in tennis, and all the difficulties she had to overcome back then. maybe it would remind her that there were people back then that everyone said she couldn't beat (steffi, martina), and she had faith in herself and did beat them. big time. I've been thinking for a while now that she should remember how things were rough back then and she didn't panic and improved what needed improving, and moved ahead.

I miss you Linds, come back already.

Welcome, i-girl, I agree with what you say but I have got so used to seeing Lindsay at the top or near the top of the rankings that I don't like seeing her dropping down. I like her there with Jen and Martina, Venus, Serena and Monica and Kim etc. But the main thing is that she is fit and healthy when she comes back don't you think.

Cheers
Jan
