She is supposed to be out of play about six weeks. She will loose points from the Swiscom and the Chase. Anyone can tell me how much is she going down???

She'll probably slide about 400-500 pts at least!!! She can still maintain #2 provided that Lindsay doens't win everything she plays in!!!

No, much worse than that. Martina will probably fall to #4, and likely #5 after Australian Open.

The highest Hingis can possibly finish this year is #3 behind Capriati and Williams (order yet to be decided). However, she is most likely going to finish at #4 seeing as Davenport is just 200 points behind on the Race listing right now and still has three tournaments to play (so she'll make up that 200-300 point deficit easily, and then some).

Yeah, possibly #5 by end of Aussie Open, but it all depends on how quickly she heals from surgery and her subsequent form.

It's going to be weird though seeing Hingis's name lower than 2 in the world! Ever since I started following tennis, which was roundabout the 1997 Australian Open time, she hasn't been lower than 2 (although she was 4 AT the 97 AO, but rose to 2 after the win and never looked back)

So how many points will come off these tourneys that she will not play in? I am asking because Gumbycat and I were debating about the ranking. I said that Venus could be ranked higher than Hingis at the end of the year and he said that Hingis will not lose anything .. it is just that other players will rise in rank because of the 18th tourney or something. Can somebody help me? These rankings are confusing.. help

I guess the easiest way to make sense of Hingis' ranking is to look at the 52-week rankings and the Championship Points List.

52-Week Ranking:

1 JENNIFER CAPRIATI 4867
2 MARTINA HINGIS 4842
3 LINDSAY DAVENPORT 4496
4 VENUS WILLIAMS 4333

5 KIM CLIJSTERS 3280
6 AMELIE MAURESMO 2917
7 JUSTINE HENIN 2899
8 MONICA SELES 2672
9 SERENA WILLIAMS 2501
10JELENA DOKIC 2343

Championship Points:

1 Capriati 4641
2 V. Williams 4128
3 Hingis 3946
4 Davenport 3739

5 Henin 2888
6 Clijsters 2839
7 Mauresmo 2711
8 S. Williams 2501
9 Dokic 2323
10 Seles 2306

The Championship Points are points earned exclusively in 2001. Since Hingis isn't going to play for the rest of the year, her Championship Point total will be her year-end score.

Lindsay Davenport just picked up 401 points last week by winning Filderstadt (200 for winning the Tier II title, 100 for Hingis, 43 for Mauresmo, 43 for Henin and the remainder for Kremer).

Davenport's only 207 points behind Hingis at the moment and she's playing Tier I Zurich. If she wins it she gets 260 points. Or if she makes the final she gets 182 plus all the QPs from the people she beats along the way.

Anyway, the easy (but not very correct) answer to the original question:

4842 minus 3946 equals 896.

She loses 896 points.

Okay but what about Venus? You mean Hingis is gonna lose 896 anyway? And if Venus withdraws from these last two tourneys will Venus still be ahead of Hingis or what? I wonder what Venus is gonna be ranked if she doesn't play the Chase nor Linz? Could she go down to #5? still need help

Hingis ends year with 3944 points ( 2 points less than her CR total, her 2 points of Wimbledon which is her 18th event ). Venus Williams will end yearith 4128 points ( her CR points ) if she doesn't play any more events.

Well, for sure Hingis is not playing the Swisscom this week and won't play the Chase either, I still don't know if Venus will pull out of Linz and the Chase...

But, I asked about Hingis because of her ankle injury, and after the Chase, I think she will be ranked n# 4.

I just hope Venus plays something....

For sure, Hingis will end with 39.. points

She will lose the points for Zurich, Philadelphia and the Chase and will end the year possibly as no4 in the world ; who said that she won´t lose any points must be a Hingis-fan

It´s not that a former no1 being injured is assured of her points from last year being given back to her for not playing ; I hope she comes back to challenge Jenn Lindsay and the Williams but at this stage we have to see the facts

and the facts are that Hingis will fall whereas Jenn and Lindsay are capable of the year-end-no1 and Venus is the one who can grab for it at the Australian

Venus will end the year ahead of Martina Hingisova even if she decides to skip both Linz and the Chase Championship.. Ain't that something???

Ok thanks alot for everyone's inpt on the matter of ranking. I was afraid that since Hingis may drop that it would push Venus even further down the ranking list. I so want Venus to play these last tow tourneys. Please play Vee We miss you dearly Also gaining points now will really benefit you right in time for the Australia Open.

Me being German I´ve info that the WTA guaranteed the organizers in Munich that both Williams´ will play ; the rrest wouldn´t have to fight for their seeds, they´d be assured of playing ( Sanchez, Coetzer, even Schett )

With both Williams´ playing, the race is still close

Wether Venus or Serena play that last preparation events is unknown
