Okay since it goes on Race rankings - she'll be the no 1 seed - regardless if Amelie jumps her between Advanta and the WTA Champs.

Amelie can't pass her at Philadelphia anyway.

Amelie can't pass her at Philadelphia anyway.
Technically if she won the tournament - she would be the no 1 player but it wouldn't be come to fruitition because by the time the next rankings comes out on November 8 the WTA Champs points will have been deducted, hence why there's the major gap between points (aka projection points, etc).

No, not technically. Points are off for YEC this week, so she's not technically, theoretically, or officially the number one player. She can't get that until after the YEC.

Andrew.
Nov 1st, 2004, 01:13 PM
Lindsay need to make the semis of the YEC. That would lock her into the year end #1 spot most likely. Or, hope that Mauresmo sucks in Phili.

Elldee
Nov 1st, 2004, 02:31 PM
or that Amelie doesn't do well in YEC.

I was watching the Filderstadt final and Lindsay was playing so well, I can't wait to see her in action again. I'm confident she'll win.

Andrew.
Nov 1st, 2004, 02:40 PM
Well, think about the YEC field this year.

Amelie - She can't play her until the final, but Lindsay has dominated her all year.
Myskina - With the exception of Moscow, Lindsay has always owned her.
Dementieva - She can be tricky, but hopefully Lindsay can win that one.
Kuznetsova - Lindsay should beat her pretty handily indoors.
Sharapova - I really don't see a big problem here.
Serena - If she plays I'll be suprised. If she plays Lindsay, I see Lindsay winning in straights.
Vera/Venus/Jennifer - All are not playing well now. Should be a win for Lindsay.

That's a winnable field. And playing Mauresmo in a final would be a 90% chance of a Mauresmo choke.

Well, I agree with you Andrew, everyone know that Lindsay can beat all of these players, but don't forget that this year, she lost against all of the russian players who are already qualified. Kuznetzova is very confident now, she won the US open, and two titles next. Sharapova is confident too, she won Wimbledon, beating Lindsay in the semis. Dementieva made a Roland Garros and a us open final. Myskina beat her at Moscow, Lindsay was ill but Anastasia felt much more confident when she faced Lindsay. As far as I'm concerned, Lindsay will face tough oponents, who want to beat her again. I really believe in Lindsay's chances of winning the YEC, but she'll have to play her best...

She was injured playing Kuznetsova.

Sharapova is hype who has done nothing of note since Wimbledon.

Dementieva hasn't been in great form indoors.

Lindsay owns Myskina.

I'm not scared of the Russians, and Lindsay shouldn't be either.

I think Sharapova did well in Zurich but although Lindsay didn't play I could tell she would have won the tournement, the surface was great for her. Maria can't touch Lindsay on hard.

Lindsay would have won Moscow, although the surface was bad and it would have been tight, if she hadn't been ill.

The YEC's gonna be a tricky one, I honesstly believe that davey is in great shape, however theres alwas that doubt in my mind that her attitue during games could lose her the title. The other players who have quallified, we all know lindsay can beat, but she has to want it, and sometimes lindsay arguably does not all the time, and hence we get poor games from her.

With respect to the field, I really think that sharapova is the one to watch, I saw her play in zurich a week or so ago, and she looked in great shape, hitting the ball extremely well, and her movement was awesome. She also has the attitute of siolder adn will battle on right to the end.......not sure bout you guys but this chick is breaming with confidence or 3 wins almost back to back.....i personally think she could pose a threat.

I think its gonna be an exciting tourney to watch, and really happy linds leads the race, i think she'll have to be at her best both mentally and physically to win this one though.

Does anyone know how lindsay's flu is?? is she fully reovered??

I disagree about Lindsay's attitude to be honest, especially post the US Open. I'd like to think Lindsay would like to consolidate [and prove she deserves] her number one spot and play all the top players in preparation for the Australian Open.

I hope Lindsay feels good and is practicing hard as we speak... actually, she should be asleep.

I thought it would be "easy" for Lindsay to end the year #1, but things are heating up!! Amelie has stepped it up and won Linz and could be on her way to defend Philadelphia. Lindsay still has a really good chance at finishing #1; I hope Lindsay and Amelie meet in the finals, how appropriate would that be?!

Considering Sharapova's all but impressive form since Wimbledon, and Kuznetsova's lack of play, I consider Lindsay's section the hardest. All she needs to do is win one match, and have the other two go to three sets, and she should be in.

If Lindsay loses the #1 ranking it's her fault. If you don't play, you can't keep it, a concept fans of certain African-American players fail to understand.

Elldee
Nov 8th, 2004, 08:08 PM
I agree that Lindsay groups tougher. Myskina is fine, but I hoped Lindsay would also have Vera and Svetlana. Serena isn't match tough though and hopefully Lindsay will overpower if not out manuveur Elena.

Filderstadt was ugly. Her match against Jankovic was quite hideous. She really didn't start playing well until the semis. She doesn't have that warmup time here.

Don't worry Andrew!!! Lindsay was very tired in the and 2000. Now, she moves better than she used to, and she is much more confident than las year... She really can beat Elena, Anastasia and Serena. But I think Lindsay's toughest oponent is Serena because they are two powerful players, and Serena a player who can send back Lindsay's power, that can annoy our Lindsay. So try to be as clever as possible, like in the final of Los Angeles, the 1/4 and final of San Diego... I know she can do it...

Tennis: Davenport launches bid for 2005 glory at WTA Tour Championship

LOS ANGELES : Lindsay Davenport, who thought just months ago that her career was on the wane, instead heads into the elite WTA Tour Championships seeking to position herself for an assault on Grand Slam glory in 2005.

"It doesn't replace the US Open or Wimbledon," Davenport said of the three million-dollar Championships. "But it's the fifth-biggest tournament we have. It would be great to finish the year on a great note and keep the success building until next year.

"I'd love nothing more than to give myself chances to win the Slams I didn't win this year."

Adding spice to the six-day tournament is Davenport's battle with France's Amelie Mauresmo for the year-end number one ranking.

Mauresmo, 25, rides an eight-match winning streak into the event at the cavernous Staples Center - home of the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers.

Like Davenport, Mauresmo has fallen short in this year's Grand Slams. But she said the accomplishment of becoming France's first top ranked tennis player earlier this year has left her more relaxed as she tries to regain the number one spot from Davenport.

"I take it really in a relaxed, but excited way," she said. "Now it's more 'It would be great.'

"But it's not an obsession like it was before September."

For the round-robin phase, Mauresmo was drawn in the Black Group along with Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, US Open titlist Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva - all from Russia.

Davenport, 28, is in the Red Group with French Open champion Anastasia Myskina and fellow Russian Elena Dementieva and former world number one Serena Williams.

Mauresmo opens the action at 6:30 pm (0200 GMT) against Zvonareva, the woman she beat in three sets to retain her Philadelphia WTA Tour title on Sunday.

Wednesday's other matches are Williams versus Myskina and Davenport versus Dementieva.

It's not the year-end scenario Davenport was predicting in June after a crushing defeat by Sharapova in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

At that point, Davenport said, injuries had left her feeling that she was nothing more than a perennial semi-final contender, a way of tennis life she had no stomach for pursuing.

Then came three straight victories on the hardcourts of her native California and Davenport realized she could again make it to the top.

"There was some concern that I would end my career not enjoying tennis," said Davenport, who hinted darkly after her Wimbledon disappointment that she had played her last match at the Championships. "Tennis is certainly more exciting when you have chances to win.

"It has been a different year," she added. "Being in the top 10, and even the top five, but not feeling like the player I used to be ... It has been a fun journey to recapture that."

While Mauresmo is familiar with the vagaries of the round-robin format adopted last year - she lost twice in the opening phase but still made it to the final to finish runner up to Belgian Kim Clijsters - Davenport hasn't played in the season finale since the system was adopted.

"I'll probably have some nerves, because I'm not used to the format," the American said

The love of the Williams Sisters by some fans in this forum has grown to disgusting levels. I thought you would be the best to fix it.

Well it's almost 12.30am UK time, early hours thursday morning. I was going to stay up all night to watch tennis but I'm not sure I can take it as I have just got in from work. I might set my alarm for about 3.30 am and have a few hours sleep. Lindsay isn't on until last today so I'm sure I won't miss a thing!

Go Lindsay! :woohoo:

Yeah I was very impressed with that scoreline - I went to dinner and it was 4-1 deuce in the 2nd set and was hoping she'd close it out easily - looks like she did.

Just need her to play like that for the rest of the RR matches at least :)

Nov 11th, 2004, 08:11 AM
It seems like she played great, the most impressive feat was winning that 18 deuce game. She served at almost 70%, 5 aces (only 2 dfs), 29 winners and 17 ues, 14/19 at net, and saved ALL 10 break points she faced, with 9 of them coming in that marathon game! Great job!

Elldee
Nov 11th, 2004, 08:13 AM
Lindsay served about 60 times [first and second serve] in one game, I hope her arm is okay!

The slow court is really bad for Lindsay but she kept going and anticipating more shots and did really well. C'mon!!!

You are right Gran Slam!!! The court is sooooo slow!!!! But Lindsay played so well!!! But I'm a little bit annoyed by the umpire, he stole some points...I don't really like the umpire chaire, I hope that it won't be like the semi of the YEC in 2001. Go Lindsay!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I awoke at 4.15am - seems like the 2nd match had only just started. I was beginning to think that I should have just woke at 6am to catch Lindsay's match. I went back to bed when everyone in my house got up, at 8am! Now I have just got up at 11.30am and I don't know where my mum is - she should be off work today! Anyway...as for the match....

What is with that court!? It's slooooooow - it's like playing on a clay court indoors! I was worried how Lindsay would cope with it but I think she did exceptionally well. I was amazed by the variety of shots she was using - even at the start of the match. She was volleying, lobbing and using angles like I never seen her use before.....as well as running down all the balls that were sending her wide.

I don't think I've ever seen Lindsay play with such variety and I just think it's a testiment as to how she is still improving, even so late in her career. The tactics Lindsay used were spot on, I noticed that although she didn't stand inside the baseline to return, Lindsay was standing way into the tramlines on the Deuce-court side to return.

As for that loooooong game. I can't remember seeing a game that long! What impressed me was that Lindsay NEVER gave up - there was no negative body language........just more of a "can you beleive this is happening?" look, every now and again. IMO, had Lindsay have been in the middle of a game like this 18 months or so ago, leading 6-0 4-1, I think she would have given the game away - but this time she didn't! And when she won it, she celebrated with her arms in the air. What a game though - I think that's going to be long remembered!

Apparenly, Lindsay didn't double fault at all throughout that whole 19 Deuce game!? That is a testiment to her serving abilities. She served something like 60 times in a row and her serves remained consistant - if I was one of her opponents after that, I would be affraid. That is consistancy. Also, I'm not 100% sure, but maybe someone correct me.....but thinking off the top of my head, there were more points played in that game at 4-1 than there was in the entire first set!?

One thing I am confused about is this from the BBC website:
"Davenport, showing signs of weariness in her troublesome shoulder, finally secured the game and then broke Dementieva again to seal the match."

What troublesome shoulder are they talking about? I thought it was Dementieva with the shoulder problem? I didn't see any signs of weariness in Lindsay's arm - what on this Earth are they talking about!?

Hope I haven't gone on too much,
-Rache :wavey:

She's gotten 117 points for that 1st win - out of the 3 in her group the carries the most points is Myskina, in terms of her ranking.

But we're all hoping she wins all her matches in her group so all the pressure goes off her :)

ETA: Even if she served up to 60 times in that 18 deuce game it's the equivalent of playing at full two set or even a 3 set match - and considering she didn't have any major problems for the rest of the match, it shouldn't be a concern.

That pic is from when she finally managed to win the game (reminded me of the US Open and her match against Venus) <g>

That pic is from when she finally managed to win the game (reminded me of the US Open and her match against Venus) <g>Actually, I think the pic that Lindsayno1 posted is from when the Umpire overuled one of Lindsay's down-the-line shots....instead of the game going back to Deuce, it went to Dementieva 4-1. Lindsay was in disbelief that he overruled.:tape:

She dropped her racket in suprise! (I might be wrong, but I'm sure I'm right because Lindsay threw her arms in the air when she won "The Deuce" game  )

Tennis stars drive themselves crazy
By Miki Turner
Special to Page 3[/b]

LOS ANGELES -- It's always entertaining to see athletes and actors break out of their boxes and try something daring, and perhaps even dangerous. It was especially gratifying Tuesday as Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova and several other WTA top female players, fired up their engines and took a few Porsche Cayenne SUVs for a competitive spin.

Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams just wanna see the keys.
With an ESPN billboard advertising the Dale Earnhardt biopic "3" ironically looming in the distance, the participants -- who also included Anastasia Myskina, Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva and Jennifer Capriati -- congregated across the street from the Staples Center for the WTA Tour Championships' Porsche-sponsored event.

http://espn.starwave.com/i/magazine/new/wta_porsche2.jpg

"I'm just nervous about the paperwork," Williams joked. "I can't hold anybody liable! If I get hurt, I want to be able to hold somebody liable!"

Capriati, an alternate at this week's season-ending tourney, was as nervous as she was unprepared. Apparently, she didn't get the memo regarding proper foot attire -- no heels. So, she borrowed a pair of Filas from Kuznetsova.

"I just don't want to be the last one," Capriati said. "I don't want to be the slowest or hit the most cones."

With some trepidation and, um, intimidation from above, the athletes got a crash course in maneuvering vehicles through strategically-placed, orange cones.

The top three finishers were Mauresmo, followed by Kuznetsova and Davenport.

Davenport, ranked No. 1 in the world in tennis, took to the road quite nicely.

"It was funny going through the course and trying to weave through the cones and still go fast, but it was exciting. It was a little scary. One corner, I probably took a little hot."

http://espn.starwave.com/i/magazine/new/wta_porsche3.jpg

Meanwhile Sharapova, who only got her driving license three months ago, was enlightened. "This is totally different -- definitely an experience," she said. "It was very good though. I love speed, corners. It was fun."

But did the inexperienced driver have any mishaps? "I think I knocked down a cone, gosh darn it!"

Williams, who's used to being at the top of the pack, didn't crack the top three but enjoyed the experience nonetheless. "I have an SUV and a sports car and I drive very fast," she said. "I feel a real need to speed. I've always said I should be a race car driver because I drive so fast."

For her racing efforts, Mauresmo won the opportunity to enjoy the Porche Driving Experience. Meanwhile, the winner of the tournament which begins Wednesday night at Staples (Nov. 10-15), gets to donate a Porche to her favorite charity.

Lindsay came third in a skirt and flip flops? Impressive. She's gonna beat Kuznetsova's and Amelie's asses on the court though.

Andrew.

You didn't see the Great Graf or Martina Hingis dressed as though they were out for a night on the town instead of playing tennis. How they dress when they go out is their business, on the tennis court I like to see a little normality. Call me old fashioned, lol but thats just me;)

No longer bobbling, Davenport erases thoughts of quitting
Multiple Grand Slam tournament winner has risen to the top ranking in the world again and put aside retirement talk.

Are you ready for Lindsay meets Barbie during the WTA Tour Championships?

The first 5,000 customers to arrive tonight at Staples Center will be presented with Lindsay Davenport bobblehead dolls.

Davenport had a mischievous little grin when shown one of the dolls.

It appeared she battled an urge to make fun of the concept if not the doll itself before she said, "I'm flattered. It's very slim. My husband got a kick out of it."

She smiled.

"I'm very flattered," she said.

She's a good sport. She also is supportive of whatever it takes to promote her women's tennis.

"If I could only ask to look that well in real life," she joked.

Michael Roth, a Staples Center official, told her they were putting aside 50 dolls for her.

"For your family and friends," he said.

Davenport rolled her eyes.

"And your neighbors," he said.

Husband Jon Leach, other family members, friends, neighbors and fans are more focused on Davenport's tennis. It was bobbling around for a while.

They were concerned earlier this year. Very concerned, in fact. Her game had become very slim, the result of knee and foot surgery.

We're talking about the 1998 U.S. Open champion, the 1999 Wimbledon champion and 2000 Australian Open champion.

She won six times on the WTA tour in 1997 and again in 1998, seven times in 1999, slipped to four in 2000 with eight additional finals appearances and bounced back to seven championships in 2001.

Then came the injuries and the lean years. She did not win a WTA tournament in 2002. She won all of one tournament in 2003.

"It's tough to sit," she said.

It's tough to sit and not be able to play tennis because of injuries.

"And it's tough to come back," she said.

It's not just tough because your body is not prepared to allow you to play at the high level you have come to expect. It also is extremely tough mentally.

"It was a very tough couple of years," she said. "You're in the top 10, even in the top five, but you are not the player you used to be."

She understands the game all too well to fool herself.

"I was the shadow of the player I had been," she said.

Good was not satisfying. Not when she had been the best.

It's not a matter of having an ego that will not accept anything but championships. It's more about feeling she has a chance to win championships.

"I did not have the confidence," she admitted.

Deep down she knew she was not good enough to play with the best. That's why she talked about retiring while at Wimbledon.

"I felt 100 percent in my heart that this was my last year," she said.

Now she's 100 percent talking about continuing to play in 2005. That's what happens when you rebound.

"My mini-comeback," she called it.

That's what happens when you're healthy, determined and back on top of your considerable tennis game.

The young lady who grew up on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and attended Chadwick School defeated Elena Dementieva, 6-0, 6-1, in a match that ended at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday on the first night of the WTA Tour Championships.

"She's the type of player who gets better when she plays more matches, so I was happy to get her on the first night," Davenport said graciously.

The other players are not happy to play Davenport at any time these days. She came to Staples Center with seven WTA Tour titles this year and, surprise of surprises, the No. 1 ranking.

"Honestly, I did not know if I could come back," she said.

Attribute the comeback to hard work.

She talks about not hitting more than an hour and a half a day. Additional time on the court is not necessary because her strokes are grooved. As she says, she always has hit the ball well.

The real hard work comes in conditioning exercises. Her jokes about the bobblehead doll to the contrary, she is fit. She is extremely fit, the result of hours and hours of that hard work training off the court.

The dividends are playing off on the court.

"For whatever reason, things started clicking again," she said.

She has regained her game and with it the mind-set of a player who believes she can win every time she steps on the court.

"When I won at Stanford (this summer), I felt like a top player with a chance to win," she said.

She has stepped up from pretender to contender once again.

"I'm enjoying it again," she said.

Her husband, other family members, friends, neighbors, fans, etc., are enjoying Lindsay Davenport's tennis again.

her serve was pure excellence as per. she played generally shit though! i didnt even watch the second set it was so bad. I just skipped to 4-5 and watched the end. Lindsay just hit the ball with too much power today though. That was a shameful performance

Well, Lindsay served great in the first set and Myskina only won 3 points against Lindsay's serve up to 6-6.....I was so sure Lindsay would win the tie break because her service games were so dominant in the first - but it all went pear-shaped.

I am going to watch tonight and I hope she plays a little better. I've hear that Serena has had an elbow problem which appears to have been a factor at times in her other matches - they haven't been as straight forward for her asshe/we might have expected.

Lindsay should have confidence in the fact that she won their last meeting and come into the net to finish points off. In her first match she won something like 9/10 net points and yesturdays match was a bit similar winning something like 8/11. If Serena has got an elbow problem, she may find the lob difficult to execute because of the way she will have to move the arm (more upwards), so the net might be a safe bet for Lindsay.

I am going to be on the edge of my seat tonight, but I'm going to watch it all the way through!!!

GO LINDSAY :bounce:

I really believe in Lindsay's chances!!! In fact, she lost because Anastasia made her move, and I find that Lindsay didn't move very well this morining... Against Serena, she'll have to be at 100% mentaly, on her service, strokes and volley.

Andrew, get over it.

Serena will be tough to beat as she knows that she has to win to go through [as I assume Myskina will beat Elena in 2] and will want to get through. But Serena has been messy and hopefully Lindsay will bring herself back to her form against Elena.

Lindsay served a double fault in the tie break and that's inexcusable really, but then she gave up in the second and crossed her legs in the break thing... I don't know why she doesn't go for a three set win and put the disappointment behind her. She's a tennis player.

I can understand Lindsay though, this is an awful court to play on for her and Myskina is the french open champ [clay!clay!] so we shouldn't be too suprised. When Lindsay plays Ana on hard she'll thrash her as usual.

I'm staying positive for a win over Serena, but she's coming next year and we should all be glad about that. Plus she's playing an exhibition against Maria in december.

Joaco If Myskina wins her match by any set score, Lindsay must win in straight sets.

If Myskina loses in straight sets, Lindsay must win the match by any set score.

If Myskina loses her match in straight sets, and Lindsay loses her match in three, sets, there is a chance she might make it through to the semis.

All other scenarios put Lindsay out of the tournament.

There's no doubt in my mind that Myskina will beat Dementieva in two. So let's all cross our fingers and toes for Lindsay to win in two and dominate from the start. If Lindsay had played Serena when Elena did with Serena's dodgy serve we wouldn't be worrying at the moment.

LindsayRocks89
Nov 13th, 2004, 04:32 PM
Lindsay needs to dominate from the start and put pressure on Serena, we all know Serena is playing well, Lindsay needs to go for winners, hit the ball right back to Serena down the middle, and come to net, if Lindsay wins the first set she can win in straights unless for Some reason Serena really picks it up. If Serena wins the first set then i don't see Lindsay going out there and fighting for another two sets, but i would hope she would.

It's not over yet! Lindsay pulled that match out of the hat in 3 - a great acheivement for her.

In order for Lindsay to go through Myskina will have to do one of the following:

Lose in 2 or 3 sets

If my calculations are incorrect can someone correct me?

For a while I was thinking that if Myskina won in 3, Lindsay would still go through but then I realised I forgot to count the set she won vs Serena - lol.

Normally in a match where Ana plays Elena, I would cheer for Ana but not tonight ;)

Either way, I'm really happy that Lindsay defeated Serena again. Lindsay wasn't in the best of form in the first set and a half but that was largely due to a low service %. Lindsay was able to pick up her game and it will be key in beating top players in Grand Slams next year. Knowing that she is able to play herself into form even though she was down in the match against someone like Serena can really help her mentally next year.

For now though, I lay in hope that Ana will be beaten - perhaps Elena may want to redeem herself with at least one win. I wasn't going to stay up and watch but I won't be able to help myself! :p

Go Lindsay :bounce:

Why do you want Lindsay to be in a group with Svetlana? Svetlana is a tough player for Lindsay as she makes her run. On the contrary, Vera would have been great, she is still a little bit weak to beat Lindsay, but not Svet. Hope Myskina will win in 3 sets, or she will loose, it would be soooooo great!!!!

Svetlana's win at the US was flukier than Myskina's. Pierce [love her!] took out Maria, Petrova took out Henin Hardenne and Lindsay hip took her out. I don't think she's all that. Lindsay vs Sveta 6-3 6-3.

Myskina wins, Lindsay's out. If Dementieva wins in three, Lindsay's in as she'll have 2-1 and Myskina will have 1-2 [as will Elena].

It's weird because Elena is not playing for anything... except ranking points that she doesn't really need. However, like Vera, she doesn't give up... hence the 18 deuces.

Andrew.

While the win was thrilling, and under normal circumstances would be great, it's at the same time upsetting. Lindsay had a job to do, and she only got it half done.
