Maybe its about time the Yorkshire player was given her own permanent, magical thread in WTAWorld. She has risen from around 750 at the beginning of the year to her current ranking of 393, and the good news is that she's improving all the time!

Good luck Katie, maybe her form can live up to the thread title (yes I know its lame)

She beat Lauren Cheung 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the first round and rumour has it that she has beaten Katie Pinchbeck in the second round :D

Katie is a good prospect. I remember seeing her in Edinburgh this year, hits decently off both sides, good serve. She struggled to make a particular impact against Elke Clijsters in the semis, who was outhitting her at times, but when she managed to dominate the points, she looked in control. Not wild.

Let's hope she keeps developing that game, if she can push Sanchez-Lorenzo to 46 46 then there is definately something there.

Kaite's next tournament is Tipton $10K where she is so far the 6 seed! This is a great chance for her to make a few cheap points and even win it! After that she's in Hull $10K! I think she could well be top 300 by March!

I think Katie might have a brill year this year.By just building on last year she will easily get top 300 and even higher if she goes for it.

If Mel is fit all year i think she can achieve the same.

Top 10!?  ;)

but a great performance nonetheless! :yeah: She has the basics down, so she just has to believe that she is better than grinding it around the challenger circuit. I would be happy never to watch her playing the Edinburgh $10K if it meant she was out there realising her potential on the WTA Tour. 273 she is this week...

I'm hoping for around 220 by the end of the year...that should be enough for Australian Open Qualifying shouldn't it? By my calculations she should need about 65 points from the rest of the year (since she's defending 25 points), which is certainly possible, especially if she can take it a step further in the 25K challengers...

The media are making so much fuss about Andy Murray, but they never say anything about our girls. Katie has done well this year, but nobody seems to care. Everybody outside the tennis world seems to think Tim, Greg and Andy are all in the top 10, but they are nowhere near! Our girls have been making steady progress however, which should pay off in the long run. On the BBC they shew a graph saying Murray had risen from 400 to 65 (in the seniors) and Jade Curtis hasn't risen as far (also in the seniors). Jade only gained a senior ranking a few weeks ago, so how can that be true! :tape:

"the hard work starts after wimbledon"

shes now 1-4 since wimbledon.

and anne who had a (lets face it) terrible grass court season is 10-3

she needs to fix that serve of her's and also her conditioning/movement/fitness. I liked her until she started talking about the other girls in GB who are unfit and not trying hard enough and so on because tbh, she's one of the unfit ones. Shes a good talent though and needs to get into shape and strengthen some of the big weaknesses before she can even think about top 100. Good luck to her

Is it just me, or does she really seem to struggle against Chinese/Japanese players? Looking back at some of her results in Gifu and Fukuoka this year and Chongqing, Chengdu and Changsa last year, she made some matches much tougher than she should have and lost some she shouldn't. And aren't these girls very consistant at getting the ball back? Not only does she need to work on her serve and fitness, but she also really needs to play consistant tennis, even if it is just getting the ball back in court. She has the ability to do it. Maybe she is just plateauing out at this level for a bit before the next break through :) Lots of points to defend now, Madrid final, Nottingham title :scared:

O'Brien's WTA ranking of 145 will be boosted by her success

Britain's Katie O'Brien reached her first WTA Tour quarter-final with a win over second seed Anastasiya Yakimova at the Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan.

The British number two, ranked 145 in the world, booked her place in the last eight with a 6-3, 7-6 victory. O'Brien, 22, had game points in 11 of the first 12 games and dominated the tie-break in the second set after ten consecutive breaks of serve.

She said: "It was a tough match but I was pleased with my performance. I'm treating every win here as a bonus, as I didn't expect to make the main draw," she added.

"In fact, I'm lucky to be here as I had real problems getting a flight out here. In the end, I flew business class, so maybe I should consider travelling this way more often!"

O'Brien has also made the semi-finals in the doubles events and will play both matches on Friday.

Katie reached the QF of the Midland Challenger before going down 6-1 3-6 1-6 to 2nd seed Granville  At least she made a better match of it than when she was playing against similar standard players (Osterloh, Camerin) on the US summer hardcourts last year. Ranking should head up to around 117
