There was a very short clip of her victory moment on Eurosport - she looked absolutely delighted. I'm so happy for her :bounce: She can just swing away against JJ. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Woohoo! Nicely done Katie, keeping hold of that top 100 place and I think that puts you as British number one now. Another top 100 win, albeit over Mayr :tape: But hey, she beat Anne at Wimbledon, so it's nice to get a bit of revenge. Best of luck against Jankovic

O'Brien glad to leave baked beans at home

</EM>
By Paul Newman in Melbourne

Katie O'Brien must be thinking how peaceful everything is here at the Australian Open. Nobody demanded £900 in cash before she got on the plane; there have been no bodies lying in the road en route to the tennis centre; police escorts are not necessary; and she has not gone down with food poisoning or a tropical disease.

Those have been some of the snapshots from O'Brien's life over the last six years as she has toiled her way around the lower levels of the international circuit. Those travels have brought their reward. Having broken into the world's top 100 last year, the 23-year-old from Hull is enjoying more regular visits to the major stopping points on the women's tour.
This week she appears for the first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament without having had to qualify or benefit from a wild card. In the first round she plays Austria's Patricia Mayr, who is ranked three places lower at No 90.

"You come somewhere like here or any of the tournaments on the main circuit and it's so different to the events at Challenger level," O'Brien said. "It's a different world and really makes me appreciate what I'm doing."
O'Brien's itinerary in recent years reads like a backpacker's diary. She has travelled, often alone, to such unlikely tennis outposts as Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Africa and Nigeria.
Her first trip to the Uzbek capital of Tashkent came after she was offered the rare opportunity of a place in the main draw of a tour event. "Uzbek Airlines were the only company that I could find who flew there, but the travel agent told me they didn't have a website or ticket office and you had to buy your ticket from their counter at Heathrow, which was open just three hours before the flight," she said.
"When I got there they only had business class available, the fare was £900 and they would only accept cash. I had one out-of-date debit card and two credit cards on which I could only draw out a certain amount. I was in tears, calling home and wondering what on earth I could do. In the end I went to one travel exchange and got some money out and they told me to go to another one and do the same. It was worth all the trouble because I made it into the quarter-finals."
The Tashkent experience underlined to O'Brien the importance of including tins of tuna and baked beans in her luggage. "Players were dropping like flies because the hygiene was terrible," she said. "Everybody was getting food poisoning. I was OK but when I got home I was so ill. I think I picked up some tropical disease."
Police escorts took the players to the site when O'Brien played in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, while the route to the venue was even scarier in the Nigerian capital of Lagos. "There were actually bodies lying in the streets," she said. "I don't know whether they were people who'd been run over or what, but they were just lying there at the side of the road."
The most intimidating crowd O'Brien has encountered was in China, where she was beaten in the Changsha final by a local player. "There was no etiquette whatsoever," she said. "It was like an absolute riot. I'm a pretty good competitor generally, but on that occasion I couldn't leave the court fast enough. But those experiences toughen you up in the end."
For all the character-building that such a life brought, O'Brien was still 60 places off her goal of breaking into the top 100 at the start of last year's Australian Open and she was thinking that 2009 might be her last season. "I didn't want to be spending years just drifting on the circuit," she said.
Having started a Business Studies degree at the Open University, she was beginning to think about life after tennis. However, qualifying for the year's first Grand Slam event led to her most productive season, culminating in a top-100 breakthrough at the same time as her fellow Briton, Elena Baltacha, after they met in the final of a tournament in Shrewsbury.
"Doing well here [by reaching the Australian Open, in which she lost in the first round to Monica Niculescu of Romania] took the pressure off," O'Brien said. "If it was going to be my last year I just decided that I would enjoy it for what it was. I did and that's what I want to do again this year.
"I can be quite highly strung and put a lot of pressure on myself. I just want to chill out and enjoy it."

Katie O'Brien cannot follow compatriot Elena Baltacha into round three as she goes down 6-2 6-2 to eighth seed Jelena Jankovic. The Briton played some decent stuff and smacked a few glorious forehands but the former world number one was a class apart.

It is good to see how much progress Katie has made in the last year, and I hope she manages to do even better in one of the other Grand Slams this year.

First time I've posted here for over a month  Tough loss to Bratchikova in Jo'burg, the thing Katie can take from it is the fact she was the only player to come close to beating her, as she went on to beat Tanasugarn 7-5 7-6 in the final. Hopefully she can pick things up on the clay, will be tough though. Started off with a 6-0 6-3 win with Olaru in the doubles over a Moroccan wildcard duo :)

IMHO I think Katie's better on clay than grass - she's pretty tenacious and fights for every point, likes to construct the points and wait for the opportunity to make her move, it's just a case of getting more and more matches on the stuff and getting used to it. The serve isn't so much of a problem on clay as it is on grass as if you're likely to throw in a few double faults and some weak serves, at least on clay you know you've got a chance to get some decent returns in on the slower stuff, whereas on grass if you're having an off day and your opponent is serving bombs, you're screwed (ŗ la Krajicek Wimby 07).

Bonne chance, Katie :aparty:

Lost 6-0 4-6 6-2 :tears:

59 unforced errors, came pretty close in the final set, if only she got an early break of the Craybas serve, who knows what may have happened.

Article on the Telegraph website basically saying Craybas moonballed her way to victory and there wasn't enough space between the baseline and the back of the court for Katie to get a decent swing at the ball. Tough, but I suppose when you're a 35-year-old veteran you know what it takes to win.

Oh hell, I hope she doesn't choke, that seems to be her forte. She can win this I reckon but hasn't had a lot of grass court practice this season. Mind you, neither has Alona I guess. :p

Dawson.
Jun 18th, 2010, 04:48 PM

Interesting article with Katie. It was a tough year for her in 2010 and the only wins she has had this year were in Australia which hold the weakest challengers in the world. Not sure if Katie will get back to top 100 again, was tough for her to get there before and now where her ranking has dropped will take a lot of work. Great that she got to the ranking of 84 anyways.
Seems like Katie really believes in the future for British women's tennis which is fantastic. Hopefully she can help younger ones like Watson and Robson even though I disagreed with Watson splitting with her coach when it seemed that things were going pretty well. But, I am sure both girls will have successful careers.

What's up with Katie these days? She played WTT and then thats it. She hasn't eneterd any yournys recently. I know she said she was fed up with doing ITF circuit. Is she quitting?

I know Iím retiring at a relatively early age. I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do next.

I am disappointed that Katie is retiring so early, but, if she no longer wants to play tennis, then I am sure that it is the right decision.

I hope she finds something she enjoys doing. If she doesn't, I suppose she could make a comeback, but I doubt if she will.

Just a reminder of how good a player Katie was when she was playing well:

Katie is playing county cup (starting this weekend) in group 2! It will be at my club (west worthing tennis club) so i can't wait to watch her! Samantha Murray, Steph Cornish, Katie Boulter, Jessica Ren, Naomi Cavaday, Aimee Gibson and Manisha Foster will also be here playing, so i can't wait to see them play! :)

Well done Katie! I'm sure I heard her commentating on a tennis stream the other night.
