serenus_2k8

Shes up 4-1, seems she is finding her form.

We need her in the MD, since Anne's stay will be short. I think Mel will def. draw a British qualifier, should there be one, or they will draw Elena. Its the luck of the Brits...

A typical Katie, up 5-1 and still loses.

serenus_2k8
May 22nd, 2009, 11:36 AM
Totally horrific :( I dont remember her being 5-1 up, i thought it was only 4-1 but its all the same. I figure the only higher ranked player in qualies is Shvedova? So if Vera withdraws, the LL spot will go to either Shvedova or Katie, depending on if Bally is in the MD or not?

So may still be a chance..

jake270392
May 22nd, 2009, 11:57 AM
She does but I cant see many players withdrawing at this stage.

I think the top 4 ranked losers go into a draw to find out LL order. So if one person does drop out, Katie has a 25% chance.

Sadness Katie.

There is one LL spot available at the moment, even without Vera pulling out.

I'm not sure who pulled out but there are 13 Qualifier places.

serenus_2k8
May 22nd, 2009, 05:19 PM
 Good news for Katie and Bally, how do you know this?

Bally is third highest ranked who lost in qualies, only other person who can lose now is Malek, the 10th seed, which would put Bally as 4th and make her still viable.

I counted the number of qualifyer places. No more inside information than that.

jake270392

Its a bit unfair, Katie should ge the place on her being highest ranked loser, but on the other hand, Bally would be the fourth, so it gives her a chance to get into the main draw. I hope one gets it but with our luck, they probably wont.

Oh...sight anti-climax  But great obvservation, you're quite right! 13 Q Spots and 12 Qualifiers, great. I bet either a brit doesnt get it, or the brit that does faces Mel or Elena :(

I agree. I think the highest ranked player deserves it more but then again, as you say, Bally has a shot now and I think Bally can always be dangerous regardless of her fairly limp loss today.

serenus_2k8
May 22nd, 2009, 07:26 PM
Vera will try and play, since her draw is so weak tbh...But her injury is supposed to take like 3 weeks longer to heal than she has given it. She was originally meant to be a doubt for Wimb as well. There has been no report saying she is fit and nor has there been any media confirming she has arrived and is practising. Morita may be a better bet, who is she meant to be playing?

PS. If Vera plays out of greed then I think she really does deserve to take the full hit.

Morita has come back to play the following weeks after her other two bagel then retirement escapades.

Just pull out Ayumi. It's best for everyone. If you've got any friends who might be having doubts, have a word too, there's a good girl. You never know, we might get Georgie in too.

Is it just me or does Katie almost not want to break into the top 100? This is the fifth time in the last year she has been one match away from doing it but lost! The good news is she has absolutely nothing to defend over the grass court season (which means going into Wimbledon she'll probably be a match away again!)

serenus_2k8

Tough to explain....but she has a great chance to do it in the next few weeks.

:tears:
Yes, disappointing performance, especially given that she had an extra chance, but Govortsova isn't a bad player and Katie lost their previous meeting 6-2 6-3 in Tashkent a couple of years ago. This was only Katie's 4th match on red clay this year and she is improving. Last year she was ranked around the 110 mark, having lots of points from Eastbourne and Wimbledon. She's at the same ranking position 12 months later without any huge point hauls on the grass. She's not going to go out and win every match, and she might never reach the top 100. But she's doing a heck of a lot better than some players are doing out there

serenus_2k8
May 27th, 2009, 11:24 AM

Great guts from Katie for taking the second set, after going from 4-0 to 4-4 it looked like it was all over, but Katie fought hard and she has the basics, it's just putting it all together, especially in the head and on the serve. After the dissapointment of Wimb, Krazy Katie has decided a clay court event is just what the doctor ordered  Though it sounds crazy, its a 75k+H which is very weak, with Katie being the #2 seed, so it is actually a very good decision IMO.

The draw is out, and to get to the final she would need to beat:

KALASHNIKOVA : #276
VORACOVA : #180
WOERLE : #151
DENTONI : #132

Tough, but she could do it. I will be interested to see how much points are needed for top 100 when the rankings are released tommorow, though im 99% sure she could do it with a run to the final. Who knows  But there is only 2 weeks (I think) til USO cutoff. Good luck

Qualifying isnt the end of the world! She got 60 points out of it at AO and its good for the confidence :) Hopefully she will make it through...but clay really isnt her surface and im not surprised that the 2 weeks have been a waste. Katie did push Niculescu further on hard when Monicas form was better than it is now, but she still lost. Niculescu was a strong fave on clay and we cant be dissapointed that Katie is trying the bigger events. She will be in the MD of another international next week, this time back on hard  Lets hope for some good success :)

I think qualifying is the best thing for her. At least an early loss there would not be counted in her ranking, unlike in the MD.

Good comeback from going down 4-1 or 5-1 in the first set, but when Katie builds a lead, like she did in the second, she needs to make the most of it  Hopefully dropping back to some ITF events on hardcourts will be a bit of a confidence boost and more productive. Glad to see Katie going out of her comfort zone, playing more on the Tour and some of the clay events, but unfortunately it didn't pay off this time

No doubt she'll get a lot of stick for breaking top 100 - ala South & Mayr - but she's worked her ass off to get in top physical condition, played a lot of tennis and totally deserves it. I think she'll climb even further by the end of the year too what with some of the ITF's she's due to play, I'd say to about #85. The real test will come next year - pitting herself against tougher opposition. A decent showing at the AO could be key to her staying in the top 100 for a while.

Hopefully now she has the monkey off her back she will be able to loosen up a little bit and not get too nervous in tight situations.
