Mar 26th, 2009, 09:05 PM
I like the fact that she only served 3 DFs and won about 70% of her points behind the second serve.

This may be more down the Heather being used to playing in juniors and not looking to dominate on the opponents second serve too much and just playing a bit defensive. I guess these things will come with experience.

Tomorrow against Adamczak will be much tougher tough, she's a decent player.

We could be looking at a direct acceptance into Wimbledon here  I think the cut off is normally about #108 in mid May. According to TBE's rankings, shes going to be #127 after this win with 520 points. The current #108 has 592 points, so it is very possible if she takes this good form to the higher level ITF's she is due to play. I think the only thing she has to defend is a quarter final at $100k SAINT-MALO (40 points). GO KATIE :bounce::bounce::bounce:

serenus_2k8
Mar 29th, 2009, 01:30 PM
Well she has a 100k+H week after next, so she could easily defend those points and then add on more there  :woohoo: I didnt realise Katie was exactly 1 day older than Mel. Spooky stuff :o I hope they both join Anne in MD without WCs so other Brits can use them instead.

jake270392
Mar 29th, 2009, 08:48 PM
Yes its good to see her playing well, after such a poor year last year. I think we will see how far she has come next week when she's playing the 100k tournie. Hopefully she can score some big wins and she is definately capable of doing so (hopefully she is drawn in different half from Anne). But its good to see that she is winning matches that she should be winning.
Lets hope she can keep this up and with hardly no points to defend from last year, she can really rise up the rankings.

Im not to sure about the points scenario, but as before, she hasn't got alot of points todefend from last year and with the start she's had, theirs every chance she could be around the 108 mark by mid-may.

Europe rocks
Apr 2nd, 2009, 08:07 PM
I would rather Katie go through qualifying that directly into the main draw, if she ends up getting a seed in the first round and loses, she's stuck with those 5 ranking points for the entire year.

jake270392
Apr 2nd, 2009, 08:19 PM
Still you never know, she might get drawn agaisnt a seed or not. Also you know with Katie, she might lose in first round of qualifying as she's not so good on clay.

NoChokes
Apr 3rd, 2009, 01:53 PM
But if she loses in the first round of qualifying, she doesn't have to carry that result in her 16 events. Although making the MD is very good financially.

When is RG cut-off anyways, I thought that would be pretty soon?

Dawson.
Apr 3rd, 2009, 03:28 PM
Nah I was refering to Wimbledon. To make the French Open MD she would probably have to win this $100k next week as I'm sure the deadline is in about 2 weeks. I would prefer her to come through qualifying at RG too. But I think it would be good for her to make it to Wimbledon MD without a WC to (A) prove that she belongs and (B) give another Brit a chance in the MD

To get to the French MD she'll probably have to win next week. Not impossible but pretty unlikely. It'll be for the best, she can push for a Wimbledon MD and top 100 after that with very little to lose.

Didn't the LTA say they weren't going to give WC's to brits outside of the top 250?

Thats what they said last year yes, but I'm sure they will make an exception for Cavaday considering her performances over the last 3 years.

Going back to Katie playing RG - it actually is more likely than I first thought. The points breakdown for Torhout is;
R1 - 1
R2 - 20
QF - 40
SF - 80
F - 110
W - 150
According to TBE rankings, she might only need a quarter final to be #109 (not including other players results of course) which would make her 1 place out of the MD. Although this is a higher level than what she has been playing this year so I wouldn't count on her making the quarters, but you never know...

serenus_2k8
Apr 5th, 2009, 12:06 PM
Didnt Naomi make the quarters last year after coming through qualies? So Katie can certainly do it IMO  She has a good first round match, but will probably play Barrois after that.

Well there was good reason  Like Katie was so :help: last year that all of her loyal fans didn't have faith in her :( but this year :D =] she has shown exactly what she can do when her head is glued on. Hopefully that means a good showing in WTA events and GS :D

serenus_2k8
Apr 8th, 2009, 04:20 PM
Yeh but there were certainly some posters who insulted her as a general player, which was totally out of line. Form is temporary but class is permanant and the sooner she shows just how classy she is, the better I will feel

Dawson.
Apr 8th, 2009, 05:34 PM
We've all had digs at British players in the past, sure. But it's usually after a bad loss or in jest (with Katie in particular) WE are allowed to do this as we're going to carry on supporting them! But there are some posters who are constantly disrespectful to British players and always root for them to lose -- these are the people I was refering to (I won't name names but I'm sure you know the kind of posters who I mean ;)) It's fine not to to like a player, but to not like a player because of the country she comes from is boarderline racist :o

Well done Katie, Obviously shes proven us alot wrong, that she is capable of beating higher players than her. I am glad she is playing the sort of tennis that we saw in 2007.
Also can Bally still jump up the rankings because I thought she was defending her points from last year.

She's cheekily in the 100k in Joburg on the 27th too, along with Georgie.

Comparing the entry lists between that and Cagnes-sur-Mer on the same week, she's probably made a clever choice. (at the moment seeded 8th compared with not even in the MD yet in France.)

jake270392
Apr 10th, 2009, 11:46 AM
Yes I think she's made a good move there considering there are'nt any high ITF tournaments next week. And then playing a high ITF the following week on hard is another good move as she probably isn't so good on clay. I think Baltacha is doing the same and just playing mainly hard court tounaments.

paul_masterton
Apr 10th, 2009, 04:00 PM
I'd be surprised if she turned up in Barcelona. The points in qualies aren't big enough to move her up the rankings, and she's had no clay court preparation.

It wouldn't serve any purpose, especially if she is playing a short clay season, as seems to be indicated by her intention to play in Jo'berg (very smart move, the rankings after that event will decide Wimbledon cut-off I think and she's got a great chance to do well).

jake270392
Apr 10th, 2009, 06:26 PM
Ok Katie isn't playing Barcelona as she isn't on the qualie draw.

I know thats very optimistic to look so far ahead, but Im just saying that her quarter actually looks to be very weak and there may be several surprise winners ;)

So. The 2 top seeds in her quarter are injured, with the other 2 not exactly the clay court experts themselves. 3 of the 4 WCs are there too. Id say Katie has a chance to do well here.

"So. The 2 top seeds in her quarter are injured, with the other 2 not exactly the clay court experts themselves. 3 of the 4 WCs are there too. Id say Katie has a chance to do well here"

 Lets worry about Katie's first match first. In fact lets worry about her first service game.

 I said it was optimistic :p

And this win wont boost her up the rankings coz she has 40 points coming off, but with a next best of 18 so only 22 are being lost. So if she goes out in R2, we wont see a change in her ranking points ;)

But if she takes the title she will be about #58  Joking aside, good luck Katie!

Oh well. She took a risk playing here (a risk well worth taking) and it didn't pay off, not the end of the world.
Lets just look forward to Johannesburg where she'll likely be top seed (shes on top of the entry list, with Krajieck at #2 currently). She then has one more week before the Wimbledon cut off. It'll be close, but I lets have faith. Allez Katie!!

EDIT - I think she actually has two weeks after Johannesbourg. I think they take the rankings from 17/05 (just after the Madrid event). Meaning she will either have to play some clay events or go to Japan and play the weak ass $50ks on carpet... and I think we all know the logical choice! Let's hope Katie knows too

Lets be honest, Katie showing up at a 10k on clay wouldnt shock me too much with some of her crazy decisions  But this one seems obvious enough for her to go for.

I dont get why she doesnt speak to the guy who sorted Annes head out, De Souza or something like that :p And I think she had a long, trans-atlantic flight and virtually no practise or experience to call back on so I think that she did well to dominate the first set.

Lets go to Jo  Who is joining her there? Mel and Georgie?

To be honest, Katie is going to get a wildcard for Wimbledon anyway. Obviously if she gets in without a Wildcard, that will be good because another Brit could take her place but im unsure if they will give anyout to any Brits outside a certain ranking?

In other news, she was down on the $75k Zagreb entry list starting 04/05/09 and was due to be seeded, but it seems that the tournament has been cancelled!! I can't see her name on any other ITF lists so seems quite unlucky for Katie (unless she plays WTA qualifying)

Fingers crossed for the Wimbledon MD spot - it's gonna be tight! I know she would rather get direct entry rather than get a WC, but looking at the rankings and what she has to defend in the next couple of months (i.e. virtually nothing!), she's got a very good chance of getting direct entry to the US Open, which would be even more of an achievement.

The absolute maximum number of points (taking into account non-counting ones) to defend before week of 20 July (which is the cut-off for the USO):

French Open - 12
Surbiton - not counting
Birmingham - 6
Eastbourne - not counting
Wimbledon - lost 1R last year so pts total won't change
Palermo - not counting
Biella - 4

Making a grand total of 22!!

jake270392

It was reported in the newspaper.

From the SA Independent Online:

"The Briton went into her semifinal not having dropped a set all week and Hrdinova's form seemed to startle her. The errors just escalated in what was one of the least exciting matches of the week.

This was the fifth match-up for the pair with each having won two matches coming into this one, although Hrdinova had come out on top in the last two. And the Czech made it a hat trick, taking a tame match in just one hour and 20 minutes.

Hrdinova got off to a great start, winning the first two games and that threw O'Brien completely off. But both were struggling a bit with inconsistent serves and a bunch of unforced errors. O'Brien, though, managed a bit of a fightback to get to 4-4 in the first set, but Hrdinova blitzed back to take it 6-4.

While the first set looked like drab stuff, the second was about as exciting as a dishcloth.

O'Brien got aggro, Hrdinova easily made the shots and then it was all over. The Briton stormed off in a huff and left for the airport almost immediately, refusing to do a press conference after."

Poor old Katie, dunno why Katie throwing a wobbly makes me laugh.

NoChokes

It doesn't actually leave a wildcard for another Brit. They've already said that to receive a WC you have to be in the top 250 (for the Brits and apart from Laura.) So there were always going to be wildcards leftover.

jake270392
May 7th, 2009, 03:54 PM
Still I think they might possibly give it to a Brit who doing well this year, like Broady or Watson.

May 7th, 2009, 04:01 PM
It'll be interesting to see if Chris Eaton gets a wild card on the mens side. He's not in the top 250, yet after last year I can't see them not giving him one. If they do it for him, they have to do it for the girls too ;) But this is WIMBLEDON we are talking about :o I think Cavaday is the only logical choice outside the top 250 anyway considering her performances there over the past 3 years

NoChokes
May 7th, 2009, 04:19 PM
Yeah, you're right, Cavaday does deserve one really. It's not like she's low in the rankings because of playing poorly.

Not sure they'll give Broady one for one reason or another and Watson hasn't really proved herself in the seniors yet, but that's to come I'm sure.

I doubt Eaton will be lucky enough to draw someone who clearly doesn't want to be there this year. ;)

From 4-0, Mraz broke to 15, held to love and then broke to 30.

4-3, back on serve. Katie!!

4-4, Mraz holds to 15.

Either Katie has hurt herself, Mraz breaking has given her insane confidence or Katie is totally brainfarting this away...She needs to hold now.

*5-4 Mraz. What a nightmare. You do you from 6-1 4-0 and then lose 5 in a row...

5-5. She broke back  Please can Katie remember what her brain is for and not do the most embarassing thing ever :o

Why is nothing ever simple with Katie. She was 2 games away from victory, only dropping 1 game...Then she clearly realised at tour level she cant be doing this well and chokes... Shes in trouble tbh...

Katie-choke  You don't get much better than a Katie-choke! Pleased she managed to come back strongly in the final set, would have been much nicer to finish it off at 6-1 4-0 though... GL against Fujiwara :)

And the photo isn't 100% tennis face, which is pretty good for a Katie action shot.

Katie took first set 7-6 against Fujiwara despite being up a break early in the set. She is up a break in second set 3-0.

Well done Katie :yeah:

There was a lengthy break after the first set, which lasted around 10/15 minutes! It had me worried for a while, but it seems it didn't effect Katie's play :D

Awesome :woohoo: FQR  Thats her 2nd in a row, great considering its clay. Perhaps Anne will have inspired the other Brits!

Now she needs to beat Rus, thats gonna be really tough, but I think Rus is gonna struggle with Katies consistancy.
