Interesting, when Katie and Anne were competing for the British #1 spot, and were on a similar level, the competition seemed to spur her on. Now Anne has moved up to a whole new level it seems to have really knocked Katie's confidence.

Yep that's correct. Katie came back from an early break down in the first set to get to 4-4, but a double fault gave Anne another break and she served out the first set. Katie had three break points in the eighth game of the second set but in the end a wide backhand put her out of the match (from the Barnstaple website) ;)

I disagree Morita isnt that great and Katie should be winning these matches to break top 100Shes also been losing to players outside the top 200 easily.
First thing is that she needs to work on her serve because she gives away alot of valuable points which costs her matches.

morita is ranked in the top 100 and is on a 15 match winning streak. she won 2 $50ks and one $75k in a row! how can u say she isnt a good player. katie was not expected to win this and the fact she almost did is great. she is lacking confidence so u shudnt be so harsh on her;)

I agree, stop being so hard on her. It could have been much worse *cough* Bally *cough*. Its the first match of the season and she almost won against Morita who is hardly her favourite opponent. Yes in the end she lost but its a better result than some of the ones she was getting at the end of last year.

Ok Katie's aim should be to crack the top 100 and beyond but realistically is she going to do that this year? It would take a real turn around in form. I think this year is about stopping the rot of last year and gradually turning things around to put her in better position for '10. After all she is a couple of years younger than Anne so still has time. Hence I dont think this was an awful result, lets see what her results are after a couple of months then we can judge.

Europe rocks
Jan 3rd, 2009, 08:16 PM
Nice choke to start the season Katie :bounce: Probably would have won if it wasn't for the rain delay, but what can you do about it?

Morita has been touted as a promising junior for quite some time and she's only now just started to show it on the WTA tour and when you're up against someone who you've never beaten and after having a poor 2008 like Katie did, to push her close is a sign things are going in the right direction, but once again, Katie really could do with winning these close matches. For every close match won, there must be about 5 she loses

jake270392
Jan 3rd, 2009, 09:41 PM
Yes I do agree that she did well agaisnt her, but she needs to get her serve right, in every match she plays, shes chucking in 10 or more double faults with no aces to back her up.
Especially in third sets is where her serve goes all wobbly.
Lets hope she can turn things around and prove me wrong, but I can say savely that she wont reach top 100.
Georgie Stoop has a better chance as she is beating players higher than her consectively.

Europe rocks
Jan 3rd, 2009, 09:57 PM
OTOH, if you look at Katie's schedule last year, she tried playing several WTA events, pushing herself to play at a higher level which she isn't ready for, but willing to improve her game. Ok, Katie might never reach the top 100, but she's had a career Brie Whitehead wouldn't mind. Who knows - Katie is only 22, some players don't reach the top 100 until much later - Anne at 25, Barrois at 27, Coin at 26.
The serve has never been Katie's strength and she knows that is an area to improve, but how long did it take Dementieva to get her serve up to the pretty decent standard it's at now. The problem with tennis is that it's not something that just happens here and now, it's a question of time

jake270392
Jan 3rd, 2009, 10:03 PM
Yeah but you cant compare Dementieva with Katie, theres no comparison, I agree with the point that it might take a year or two to push through and improve.
But unlike keothavong, keothavong was a good junior and when she came on the tour, she rose up the ranking pretty quickly until she had a bad illness which pushed way down the rankings.
She was also 23 when she really made the push by winning more tournaments and getting better results agaisnt better players in 2007. she carried this good form in 2008 and hopefully she can keep it going.

Europe rocks
Jan 3rd, 2009, 11:10 PM
Katie didn't even reach top 100 in juniors (CH 101), so to reach 104 last year shows she has got some skill, maybe she'll never reach top 100, but maybe she'll hit a purple patch at the age of 28 and end up reaching 74 in the world  Yeah the Katie/Dementieva comparison was a bit far-fetched, but it kind of illustrated the point - here was a girl who had a lot of potential but her serve let her down, but she managed to raise the rest of her game up to a level which compensated for it, and now, with an improved serve, she's play some pretty nifty tennis once again. For Katie, maybe she will get some more consistency off the ground and then the serve will come later

Joe.

yes two of them were in japan but one was in india. and the reason that no great players were playing in japan and india is coz its a challenger. to be honest quite a few top 100 players do play in challengers in asia. Yes katie needs to improve evryone knows that and u have said that in all ur posts basically.;)

Do you really think it is impossible for her to reach the top 100 at some point? Impossible is a very strong word! I dont think she'll do it this year but i wouldnt say she def wont over the rest of her career. If she could just sort out her head and stop choking i think she has the game for top 100.

jake270392
Jan 4th, 2009, 08:56 PM
Maybe but theres going to be alot more better and stronger juniors who will come through.
But she needs to be getting better results, for example beating players which are ranked much less than her, because lately shes losing to players outside the top 200 quite easily.
I know her result agaisnt Morita was close and maybe she has worked hard on the off season, so lets hope she can get better results and start winning some ITFs.

She has the game for it, just not the head  And after Katie's loss to Morita, I guess it's nice to see Morita reached the MD (d. Martic 61 36 63 and Krajicek 62 26 75)

I want to see her in the top 100 but I just cant see it. Ive also said in other posts that if she can improve on areas of her game, then she might.
Ill take back the point I said that it is impossible for her to reach top 100, but I am just going on her rsults. Maybe you believe that she has the game for top 100 and hopefully you are right.
All the more brits in top 100 will be great and I will be chearing for all of them at Aussie Open.

I agree, though its hard to say which is worse :(

I think Morita is beatable but she clearly has a good game if she beat Krajicek. Perhaps more impresively though she beat Domachowska in her first round in another three setter, so we shouldnt knock her ability! :o

Katie, Katie, Katie. What can we do with her? How less fun would it be to follow british tennis without her and her marathon matches.

I do hope she gets her mojo back this year. I think her best chance at top 100 was last year, she had 3 matches last year that if she had won she would have been top 100 and she lost them all.

This year needs to be about regrouping. Playing less events and not changing surfaces every 2 weeks.

I do not know the reason, but I can imagine that not all organisers of $10K and $25K events in the world manage to report their results in time, and that this rule is designed to make the scoring consistent.

According to TBE rankings thread here will be her PROJECTED rankings depending on her results.

SF - 139
F - 137
WIN - 132. But lets not get ahead of ourselves, shes already exceeded expectations this week and has former top 20 player Daniilidou in the semis.

Just looking over her results from last year, theres no huge block of points to defend throughout the year, just the odd tournement here and there.

Saint Malo, French Open, Portoroz, US Open and barnstaple are the only events that she has more than 20 points to defend - and they are all spread out throughout the year. If she manages to keep up a consistant level the way she has so far this year, she could be following in the footsteps of Anne and Mel :D

Thought she would struggle today, very surprised (but happy :bounce:) at a straight set win...carry this form all the way to the title!

Is this her best start to the year ever? Surely it is...she already has earned half the points she earned last year in the first 8 weeks.

Her best start by a long way, considering it includes her first ever GS non WC main draw, her first 75k semi and only her second 25k title. Hopefully it'll include her first 50k final (maybe title) too. :)

Katie  What an impressive win over Barrois! Been a good week here in Germany, hope you can keep it up. However, Karolina Sprem (she of Ted Watts fame) is awaiting her in the last four. Let's hope Karolina is having one of her error-fest days

Sprem has the most to lose here. If Katie can stay calm in her early two matches, I believe she can stay loose enough to take this. I want her in that final  :armed:

K.Sprem def. K.O'Brien 6-2 6-3
But if you look at the list of players Katie has lost to this year (Morita, Niculescu, Daniilidou, Sprem) they're all top 100 or been top 100, which shows that Katie must be on the up :)

ITF/Minsk $25K
(1)K.O'Brien vs V.Galanina (Rus)
Galanina reached the QF in the Futures event in Grenoble (losing to Naomi Broady) and finished inside the top 300 for the first time last year, but a very big banana skin, especially as Katie is the top seed. Possible QF against Hrdinova, who has beaten Katie in their last two meetings (coming back from a set and a break down in Linz qualies) :scared:

On her current form, Katie has a good chance of another title.

It took Katie 2 and half years to win title number 3, I think winning number 4 just a month or so later might be pushing it a little bit ;)

I dont.. She is top seed AND in excellent form which both put her in a great position. Also tennis doesnt follow formulas like that, especially with British tennis, so its not worth reading into! Keep the positive thoughts :yeah:

As much as I love Katie, I just think that with her being the top seed and in good form, she's more likely to lose this match then win the title - when she beat Pironkova last year in Portoroz nobody saw that coming, but then when she was in good form at the start of the year she had a couple of losses to players she really should have beaten. Let's keep our fingers and our toes crossed though :)

Yeh sadly I do agree with you  But she has shocked me with how efficiently she has been able to score wins against great players, like last week for example and she has pushed excellent players that have finally beaten her too which is cool :p I am so dissapointed at Mel and Elenas injuries that Katies shocking good form is the most positive aspect of British tennis atm!

I would love for her to scoop 50 points here. For me, going from British number 1 last year to number 4 and not even making the Fed Cup team seems to have really boosted her

Katie always seems to have been overlooked by the LTA for some reason, maybe she is their female Boggo? I hope that being overlooked for the Fed Cup team has spurred her on to prove that she can do it and she'll get into the top 100. Even when Mel was in her poor run of form in 2007 she was given a wildcard into Eastbourne (credit to her for getting the excellent win over Molik and breaking top 100), but when they had the WC nominations for Wimbledon in 2007 Katie was the last GB girl to be given one and then she was the only one to win a round

Looks like Galanina has pulled out. Katie is played the LL, Tsybysheva in the first round instead.

Should be a very easy win really, but I've really been having a few nagging doubts about this event.

Katie O'Brien beat Avgusta Tsybysheva 6-0 6-2. So that seems to have been a good start.

Nice run Katie :) Diatchenko went from being ranked outside the top 700 in 2007 to winning the $75K event in Dubai at the end of the year. Going to be a tough one, let's hope Katie can keep it up

katie wins again

Does anyone know why all of a sudden she seems to be playing grat top 100 tennis ( in view of who has beaten her this year)

has the serve improved?...this rate she could be direct into wimbledon

Final :armed: Hope she takes the title now!

I think it wont be long til she British number 2 with Elena and Mel both suffering from injuries and Katie playing great tennis, though of course I hope they both get well soon.
