View Full Version : Venus Williams-Second to None

Dec 17th, 2001, 09:53 PM
Note: This is a requirement for a bet I lost to Moon Happy holidays Selene(that's "moon in Greek Moon , and best of luck to your Lady V in 2002.

Note#2: This piece accurately reflects the opinions the author(Rollo), and is not a powder puff praise of the subject, but instead represents his honest views.
We learn in grade school that Venus is the second planet in the solar system, right behind Mercury. Tennis has it's own Venus, sharing much in common with her namesake.

Both shine brightly: both have inspired praise for their beauty. At it's brighest, Venus outshines all other planets, yet at other times it is the most difficult planet to see in the morning light. Tennis star Venus has often outshined the others stars of the WTA since 2000, only to hide her light with weeks of inactivity.
Planet Venus is often called the earth's "twin"; Venus Williams has kid sister Serena, paired so often in the eyes of the public that many believe they are twins. Both have even shared the #2 spot, for Mecury will always come before Venus, and the WTA computer has yet to rank Venus Williams above #2. The similarities end there
however, for while Venus will always be behind Mercury, Venus Williams is second to none.

No one. Not 2000's computer #1 Martina Hingis, who hasn't won a slam since the last millenium. Not 2001's computer #1 Lindsay Davenport, who actually seemed to be embarrassed enough to publicly say the "real" #1 was Venus. Not fellow 2001 star Jennifer Capriati, who lost 3 times to Williams in 2001. The most riveting of the those 3 encounters was at Miami, where after failing to put Venus away after having 8 match points, Jennifer declared, "It's not like she's a goddess or something". Perhaps Jennifer wasn't aware that Venus IS the name of a goddess as well as a planet.

Only Venus has won multiple grand slams since 2000, taking tennis' ultimate prizes 4 times. Twin pairs of Wimbledon plates and US Open cups decorate her mantle. No other female has her winning percentage(above 90%) since then. No female is as feared. Only Venus has won more than 50% of slams and events she has entered since 2000. To public, press, and fellow players, Venus is often considered the #1 of women's tennis.
She is indeed second to none.

Yet second to none isn't quite the same as an anointed #1. Intriguing questions remain as 2002 approaches. Can she ever play enough and win enough to attain the #1 computer ranking? Will she collect an Australian or French crown to add to her laurels? Like a bright comet lighting up the sky, all eyes are on Venus as she streaks on towards her goals.
Unlike our own solar system, the universe of womne's tennis is often chaotic. Will Venus fall or continue to soar past her rivals to become the undisputed #1 in 2002? We'll have to wait find out. One thing we do know. For now at least, Venus Ebone Williams is second to none.

Impressive stuff Rollo. You should follow a career in tennis writing. That is, of course, if you aren't already in the business.

Don't bet on it Moon (gosh maybe I'M the one who shouldn't bet on it........ I'm blushing and bouncing off the walls from all the favorable comments

I wasn't aware of a writing competition brickhousesupporter, I'll check it out. Thank you

BTW, if anyone can get ahold of Fingon, he owes me a lost bet. I bet him Venus would be ranked ahead of Martina Hingis on the computer at year's end.

This is one of the most objective pieces of commentary ever written about Venus. It recognises her ability and unparalleled dominance as well as her human failings and the lovely link with planet Venus is poetically masterful. Excellent, well done Rollo

Rollo, your essay on Venus is beautiful.

In fact, now that I've signed up for the 500 word Oz challenge I find it very intimidating.

Dec 20th, 2001, 05:26 PM
Who did you pick cynicole?

I might take up the challenge for fun, It looked interesting, but I want to see how all the ladies are stroking it before I make a pick!

Go Venus!

Rollo - I have bets on Hingis and Henin right now (against Mauresmo and Serena). I actually misunderstood the rules when I first signed up. I'm a sucker for betting on players 5'7" and shorter though.

Dec 22nd, 2001, 09:42 AM
Who are the bets against? Hingis may not be a bad bet if she shows some fire in Sydney. Every champ has a throwaway year sooner or later. Martina's was 2001 without a doubt. I say she's still a threat to win the big ones if she jacks up the serve a notch.

Good luck on challenges
