draw is out:

in the 1th round Lena has a bye, in the 2th round she plays ag. the winner of Molik-Farina-Elia, tough match but Lena has the chances in her recent form.
Possibly QF with Petrova or Raymond also tough but as said Lena can beat them...
then a SF with Momo, also winnable but again tough....

Good luck Lena :bounce:, beat some top 5 players here, and show your form!!, and hopefully you can finish as the world no.4 this year :yeah: :woohoo:

Lower half there are Linzzz, Venus, MaSha (& serena belongs there also, but wd)

SOOOOO LenaDD plzzz DOOOOOOOOOOO your best HERE!!!!!!!!!!

I hope Elena will draw Anastacia early on. It looks as if Elena has no problem beating other Russians as long as the match-up isn't in a final.

Err... don't get too optimistic.

Molik will be a tough first opponent... Athens anyone? I am not a fan of Molik at all, even though I'm aussie, but I do know she has improved a lot this year and has beaten some good players...

And let's also not forget Lisa Raymond beat her a week ago in another first match.

I would like her to get past all these obstacles and beat Myskina this time... pref in a final.

Yeah, she'll definately play... she's second highest seed so she'll have a break till tuesday. The draw isn't too bad, just a typical Tier I draw

Good news... due to withdrawals from Davenport and S. Williams, the draw has changed. Elena no longer plays the winner of Molik/Farina-Ellis, as Zvonereva now plays them.

And Lisa Raymond is now playing Nadia Petrova.

Dementieva plays either Elena Bovina (whom she defeated in the Moscow semifinals last week) or Francesca Schiavone (a Moscow quarterfinalist).

Biggest threats to Dementieva in Zurich are: Mauresmo, Marsha, and V. Williams. That's not to say no one else is a threat of course.

Yes looks like its Bovine time again!!
Well starting to get bored with this but ho hum maybes Franco can beat her in rnd 1 its possible ,but anyways it really will depend on what frame of mind Lena is in ,if she is "on" then she will beat Bovine again BUT if she is "off" well who knows ,I think she will be "on" ,she has a good chance to go far again and make the latter stages and well maybe even win the sodding thing ,I expect she will not dwell on sundays loss ,she did loose in a final to a top 3 player after all not Rnd one to a 102er!!
So not a total disastrous loss at all, just dissapointing.

Elena is fifth in both the WTA Tour rankings and Porsche
Championship Chase standings. The top four in the Porsche list have
clinched spots in the season-ending event with four more spots up
for grabs. This may be Elena's final event before the big one in Los
Angeles (she's not entered in either event next week in Austria or
Luxembourg), so look for her to put in a solid effort this week to
lock up a spot in L.A.

I've wondered about Lena's height, too. They claim Masha is 6 ft. and change, and Lena appears to be as tall or taller than Sharapova.

I remember when I was in college I had a class with three players on our women's basketball team. All three were listed at 5'11". All three were taller than me, and I'm 6'1"! I think some girls and women are still embarrassed at being "too tall (as opposed to a lot of male athletes who round up)

Russian around Zurich!
The first two semi-finalists at the 2004 Swisscom Challenge are both Russian.

Elena Dementieva will play Maria Sharapova after contrasting wins in the first two of Friday's four quarter-finals.

Dementieva looked to be cruising to a comfortable win over Ai Sugiyama when she took the first set 6-1, but the Japanese woman is a great fighter, and came back to take the second set, and made good a 3-5 deficit in the third.

But Dementieva is a much tougher competitor this year, and her 6-1 5-7 7-5 win means she will move up to fourth in the WTA Tour rankings next week for the first time.
Sharapova's passage to the last four came in an absorbing 75-minute match against the former champion Venus Williams, and is without doubt the 17-year-old Russian's best win since her shock triumph at Wimbledon.

Williams started better, breaking to love in the opening game, but Sharapova was straight back, and broke again in the sixth game which proved enough to take the first set.

In the second the level of play went up, but at 3-3 Sharapova pulled away, breaking for 4-3, holding serve for 5-3, and then saving a break point at 5-4 before winning 6-3 6-4.

In the other quarter-finals, Patty Schnyder was playing Paola Suarez, while Alicia Molik took on Nadia Petrova.

SPECTACULAR!! :bounce: :bounce:

www.gotennis.com
ZURICH, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova beat former world number one Venus Williams 6-3 6-4 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the $1.3 million Zurich Challenge event.

Frequently putting Williams on the back foot in a battle of past and present Wimbledon winners, the 17-year-old Russian further underlined her country's current domination of the women's game.

The world number seven was in almost constant control, combining fierce ground strokes and ferocious returns of serve to win in just 75 minutes.

It was her 11th victory in in a row, following on from tournament triumphs in Seoul and Tokyo.

Sharapova, seeded fourth in Zurich, will now take on third seed Elena Dementieva in an all-Russian semi-final.

Dementieva advanced to the last four earlier on Friday with a 6-1 5-7 7-5 win over Japanese ninth seed Ai Sugiyama.

The Russian world number five had looked on course for a convincing victory after easing through the opening set in 22 minutes.

But just as in Thursday's second round match against compatriot Elena Bovina, Dementieva seemed to lose her concentration in a second set strewn with unforced errors.

With both women keeping close to the baselines, the third set was tightly contested.

Dementieva grabbed a decisive break in the penultimate game, however, to reach the Zurich semis for the first time in six attempts.

Against Sharapova, Dementieva will be looking to end something of a jinx when it comes to playing her compatriot.

The 22-year-old was a finalist at both the French and U.S. Opens this year, but was beaten on both occasions, by Anastasia Myskina and Svetlana Kuznetsova respectively.

Dementieva has also lost to Russian opponents in three of her last five tournaments.

i just know it's LenaD first SF in this tournament  :woohoo:first in 6 tries:rolleyes:

I'm worried if she does beat Maria she loses in another final... to Molik. I think Maria has a better chance of beating Molik if they play each other in the final... so for strange reasons, I'm hoping Sharapova wins this! Unless Molik's match is played first, then I can make up my mind who to root for.

Oct 23rd, 2004, 11:17 AM
To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge Sharapova fan, and in regards to her looks, yes shes pretty, but way overrated. And I reckon Elena could take out Molik, I mean, the conditions in which they last played were miserable - windy conditions and really bad serves = nightmares. This tournament is indoor, so we dont have to worry about that :D There's no need for to cheer against Elena ;)

Prizeidiot
Oct 23rd, 2004, 11:31 AM
One more thing, is anyone else ticked off by news reports and stuff saying Elena has a bit of a jinx against Russian players and noting that shes been knocked out by them in 3 of her last 5 tournaments? I mean, its kinda inevitable, considering 3/4 of the field nowadays is Russian! They just conveniently "forget" that before losing to a fellow Russian, she beats a couple in the earlier rounds.

JC Federer
Oct 23rd, 2004, 11:44 AM
I don't know... I just don't feel confudent. :(

I have a tendency to jinx players that I root for. If I think she will beat Molik, she probably won't. Molik has become very consistent as of late, and has started to beat the good players. She made a fourth round this year at the AO, her best GS effort, and could have beaten Mauresmo. Later in the year she actually did beat her once. At the FO, she was up a set and a break against Myskina, also beat her twice this year. I only feel confident about Sharapova at the moment, and only after reading about her destruction of Williams.

Molik is a player that I don't expect to ever win a major or break into the top 8, but I do expect her to be one of the most dangerous floaters in any tournament she enters. All I know about is her results. I don't know anything about her game, because they never televise her matches here, except at the majors. I'm not sure what type of game she plays, hits hard, counterpunches, or whatever, but she's always producing upsets against players higher ranked.

But I will be happy if Lena makes a match against Schnyder. I do wonder when Lena will improve that serve. Commentators recommended she just spend weeks practicing a new serve thousands of times. After that, there will be less of an x-factor.

She and Maria are on right now?

I was hoping for the final to be Lena vs Schnyder. Upset on both counts. :(

Even though Lena is higher ranked than her, Maria is surpassing her in achievements, because she wins the titles. Elena makes a lot of big finals, which means more money, better ranking, but in the end, it's forgotten. Nothing to show for it. I think Elena should play more small events to get titles.
