Davenport regains No. 1 ranking at Kremlin Cup

Posted: 36 minutes ago

MOSCOW (AP) - American Lindsay Davenport defeated Dinara Safina of Russia 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Kremlin Cup Thursday to regain the No. 1 position in the WTA rankings.

"I'm amazed that I was able to get back to No. 1 after a tough couple of years," said Davenport, who was last at the top on Jan. 13, 2002.

Davenport will overtake Amelie Mauresmo next week to go top of the rankings for the fifth time. She trailed Mauresmo by just 15 points, 4,395 to 4,380 after winning the Porsche Grand Prix on Sunday.

In the finals at Filderstadt, Mauresmo retired after aggravating her strained left thigh. She was the top seed in Moscow, but withdrew because of the injury.

"I'm excited. But I'd like to be able to keep on going and win the tournament as a new No. 1 and not be completely satisfied just by winning today's match," said Davenport.

Davenport lost to Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria in the final in 2002 - her only previous appearance at the Kremlin Cup.

Safina, an 18-year-old wild card, could offer resistance only in the first set of her first match against Davenport.

She fought off three break points in the third game before sending a forehand into the net to give Davenport the lead.

She broke back in the next game and had a break point in the sixth, but Davenport saved it and made a decisive break in the ninth game when, 40-15 down on her serve, Safina sent a forehand wide.

"Conditions here are much different than last week in Germany and it took me a number of games to feel comfortable on the court," Davenport said.

"In the beginning I made a lot of errors but got better as the match went on and was able to end the match better then I started."

Safina called a trainer after the first set to treat a split left toenail.

The Russian failed to convert a break point in the second game of the second set, and after that it was a one-way match. Davenport won four consecutive games for a 5-1 lead and closed the match with a service winner. Safina said: "I served badly today and when you serve this way against such opponents they start to press you. She served hard. She fired three aces in a game - I couldn't even see where she was serving."

Interesting that Lindsay wants to play the number 1 Russian, Anistasia Myskina on Russian soil.......is that the height of confidence or just because she's rather play Ana than Sveta? mmmm

That confused me because, of course, Davenport could play both Myskina and Kuznetsova (semis and then finals) It seems like she thinks they are both in the top half... check that draw again, Linds! ;) Maybe if we knew what the exact question was, we would understand that comment better.

Congrats Lindsay! :bounce:

A great Lindsay quote from N&N.

I really played in two distinct eras. I was lucky to play against Graf, Seles and Hingis. I now play against Venus and Serena and today's other top players. There have always been so many superstars around me and I haven't been as famous, but I am proud of my achievements and that I am the same person I always was and I have a great life off the court.

Lindsay Davenport, reflecting on her career and taking over the World No.1 ranking

One thing which almost 99% sure will happen at her next tournament is she'll pass Martina in the no 3 position for the Career Prizemoney - heck if a miracle happens and she wins the WTA Champs and a GS next year she could finish as the all-time no 1 prizewinner (but as I said a miracle would have to happen)

Frederic
Oct 20th, 2004, 04:54 PM
A miracle has already happened this year gossipcom, as Lindsay won 7 titles (and she can still win one or two titles), and she came back at the n1 slot in the ranking. I'm sure that no one expected it so, winning the YEC wouldn't be surprising...

Elldee

Without the Belgians surely Lindsay HAS to take the YEC, it'd be great if Serena didn't qualify.

Serena 2002 does not equal Serena of 2004, not by a long run.

Yes but we remember was it 2002 when she was in good form and then lost first round to Dementieva - at least this time around it's RR - but still that can be more demanding on the players.

That was in 2000, and I beleive Lindsay was injured.

And Dementieva indoors is no pushover.

Frederic

Yes it is!!!!! But Amelie aplied for Linz, so she'll surely overtake Lindsay... But I don't exactly know because Linz must be a Tier III so Amelie won't receive a lot of points even if she wins...
