.... and all electrical everything ceased to work permanently, who would you most want with you?

a) A firearms expert

b) A martial arts instructor

c) a food safety inspector

d) a farmer

e) an internist (doctor who specializes in illness)

f) a blacksmith

g) a woodsman (ie wilderness hunter)

h) a teacher

i) a midwife

j) a surgeon

This is a variation of game we played in college. In that case, we asked which five of us we'd want with us if we were trapped on a desert Island. The guy who got picked first all the time was an entymology major who knew everything I ever want to know about edible bugs.

In this, I'm postulating non-Isolated areas. So you have to deal with potentially large numbers of predatory humans, as well as the permanent loss of electricity. Put it down to a sudden, constant increase in sunspot activity. You have to survive in the near term and the long term. Everybody with a pacemaker is dead. Everybody with an electronic hearing aid is dead. Cars don't work. No TV. No radio. No weather reports.

Good luck.

you're gonna need something like a star going super or hypernova nearby us rather than sunspots... anyway once our atmosphere is ionized and the biosphere is destroyed it won't really matter who you take with you :p

In the short run, you could rely on looting to eat. ONce it's comes to scavengimg, the food safety inspector is really useful. But in the long term, gotta have that farmer.

The internist is more useful than the surgeon, but of course, you'll then die of anything you need a surgeon for. A lot of the stuff you need an internist for, you might survive anyway, if painfully and permanently maimed.

In the long run, the blacksmith is gonna be the richest guy in town. If you all live that long.

But you're sure gambling if you don't take the midwife. A LOT of women used to die in childbirth.
