I just thought I would start a thread for one of the most under-recognized sports in the world. Curling! Its an awesome sport, and really really fun to do. Any Canadians will know what I'm talking about, this is a thread for people to chat about any curling happenings this season... NO DISSING THE SPORT!, Don't knock it till you try it.

I LOVE CURLING! I define myself as an ObsessiveCurler. I love curling and I know almost everything about it. I also curl every sunday. i lost my first game of the season 4-3 :( My opponent drew to the 8-foot for the win, he was drawing against my three stones.
I Love CURLING!

OMG! I LOVE CURLING! This is sick that you all love it too! GO CANADA!

I'm 4-1 this season. I play mixed and am skip this year ( i have been a third for as far as I can remember)

So far:

8-2

7-5

7-9

5-1

6-4 (this was a bloody cliffhanger, went to the 11th after a fuck up by me ( hit and rolled out to blank, instead of outright win) on my second rock, I got lucky in the 11th as ticked off a guard and knocked out their #1 rock giving me two (was going through the port to lie one)...I play really aggressive, I hate playing controlled weight.

later canucks!

great conchi party! I play my next game on sunday! I love curling but I want a new broom. I've had the Hammer since 2000 and now I want the performance broom like cdpoulin1 has. I love them, i hear their so light which is great to put pressure on and not use as much energy to brush.

OUT!- The scots are great at curling, no wonder they invented the sport ;)

WOw so many curling fans :D:D:D:D

Yeah i like my performance broom a lot, to my phys ed teacher that gave it to me free :D:D:D:D

I am also a third or skip, though when im with my usual team *well not this year but past years* i skip but play third, a la Ferbey/Nedohin, cause i had real problems with my weight, so close draws were always a problem....I'm almost flawless on take outs though, and i love the shot making of the third! :D

I know you didn't expect a contribution from a non-Canadian anymore... but guess what? I live where the next Winter Olympics Curling Tournament will take place :D So I had to learn something about this sport, and I watched a good few matches on Eurosport, which always covers major events very extensively.
It's great that so many of you guys actually have a tradition with curling!

I like curling :) don't get to play much but i do when i can, but scotland is really rural and the nearest rinks were quite a bit away from where I live (a little further away now ;))

Its a shame that the rest of Britain is unable to play curling at all. As far as i know there are no curling rinks in Wales, England or Northern Ireland (unless this has changed after the Olympic gold). Scotland is the only place that you get to play it and therefore we produce the only players (all the Olympic team was Scots), and its only through lack of opportunity that England and Wales don't produce.

Anyway, Hurrah curling and good luck Scotland in the worlds.

OUT!

Canada is gonna wipe the floor with Britain come 2006  :o ;) :D:lol: Possibly, but the British Government has heavily invested in curling as a sport, after our success at the Olympics. I cant begin to tell you how big a story our Olympic successes were over here. So I'll give ya 2006, but by 2010 it might be a different story :p ;)

2004 Continental Cup
in Medicine Hat,Canada
Nov. 25th-28th

The continental Cup of Curling is in it's third year of existence. In 2002 in Regina North America won and in 2003 in Thunder Bay Europe won.
The format consists of four disciplines. Team Competitions,Singles Matches,Mixed Doubles and also Skins Games. To win the cup you must win 201 out of the 400 points available. In Team Competitions you can gain 72 points,Singles 32,Mixed Doubles 36 and the most important discipline Skins is worth 260 points.

Let me explain all of the disciplines. In Mixed Doubles there are two throwers and two sweepers per team. You only play five rocks each plus there are two stationary stones behind the button and also a center guard. The other rule is that you cannot remove any stone in play for three thrown stones.
In Singles Play you attempt to make six shots and you can gain points for how well you've done. At the end of this the team(North America or Europe) that gets the most points out of the six matches gains eight extra points.
In Skins you play for a certain amount of points every end. The most points a team gains at the end of the match wins.

Today was great at curling. Lynn my curling instructor made teams for the whole season and we play against each other. I am extremely grateful that I got a good team with a buddy of mine being one of my teammates. We won 7-1! The ice was frustratingly slow for us and you could hardly get one in.
Also Lynn gave me new curling shoes for free!! It's sooo awesome to finally have some even though they feel weird compared to regular shoes.

I just played at the curling club. I sucked!! But it was tied 3-3 going into the final end(6th end) and I had hammer. I peeled off every stone except one which my second hit on the nose. At first my line was horrendous so Lynn(my curling instructor who was on my team) told me to put my wrist higher from the rock and it worked but my weight sucked after that.
Anywho it was the final stone and I had the whole house to draw to. I had to come through a hole! It somehow just hung on the back 12 to win! I am/was ecstatic!

I made really the shot of my life yesterday night!!!!!!!! There were many guards on the front....We were losing 3-2 in the 4rth....We had red stones....There was a yellow stones on the button, then two of our rocks in a row in the 4 and 8 foot....There was also a yellow stone at the top 8 foot...I had the last stone, and they were lying one......I saw that there was a hole (very very little, of like 1 stone+4 inches) that could give me a chance for a double take-out for three points! So i said why not, we had no other way to do one, nothing bad could happen, the worst was a steal of one! So i went in the hack, and saw that the ice beside us actually had stopped to play and was watching me doing my shot....I knew i needed big weight so I came out of the hack peel weight, exactly on the line.....My stone actually went through the hole, at like 2 mm of the right stone, i caught the front yellow one with the eprfect angle, it went directly on the button one, and both went out from each side of our two stones...My third was like jumping, and I pumped my fist it was great..the other team high-fived me, and so did the two teams watching! it was great! So at that time we were leading 5-3!

( i won't say that in the enxt 3, they made 8 points though :taped: ) Finally we lost 11-8 after doing 3 in the 8th, but it was a great amtch, loads of rocks in play!

FAVOURITES
In the Women's A Event the three time defending European Champion Annette Norberg is the overwhelming favourite to win for the fourth straight year. It seems that the only other team that could give the Swedes a fight is the defending silver medalists from the 2004 World Championships Norway. The veteran skip Dordi Nordby is a shoe in for her spot at the worlds but she hasn't won a major competition in a while. Will it happen here in Sofia?
My picks for Women's A to make the final seven are Sweden,Norway,Russia,Suisse,Scotland,Italy,Germany . The Czechs have never given the top teams a fight and have never made the World and in my min anyway it won't happen here. Finland has made it's little triumphs by making the worlds but the more skilled teams are here. Denmark beat Colleen Jones in last year's worlds but faltered after it, they just need to gain experience then they can make the Worlds again!

In the Men's A Event it is filled with talent! The minor favourite is the two time european and three time world champion from Sweden Peja Lindholm. Behind him is the 2002 European Champion and 2004 Worlds Silver Medalist from Germany Sebastien Stock and with him is the 2002 Olympic Champion Pal Trulsen. The seven I pick to make it to the worlds are Sweden,Norway,Germany,Suisse,Scotland,Denmark,Ital y.

RULES
1. The CCA Rules of the Game apply, except as modified below (including the four-rock rule).
2. To begin the competition, each team selects one player to draw closest to the button, with sweeping allowed. The team whose stone is closest to the button wins a bonus of $2,000 and is ranked #1. The next closest is ranked #2, and so on. In each game, the higher-ranked team has the choice of either (a) last rock in the first end, or (b) stones. In any shootout (rule #7), the higher-ranked team has choice of first or last draw to the button.
3. All games are 8 ends.
4. Total prize money is $150,000, including the winners bonus of $16,000 and the $2,000 closest-to-the-button bonus (rule #2).
5. A skin is won by (a) taking two or more points when holding last rock; or (b) stealing the end. All money not won in an end is carried over to the next end.
6. Blanking an end results in a team losing last rock in the next end.
7. If the money at stake in the 8th end is not won, each team plays one draw to the house, with sweeping allowed by the playing side only. The team whose stone is closest to the button wins the end and the money.
8. Prize money won determines the game winner. In the event of a tie in money won, each team has one draw to the house, with sweeping allowed by the playing side only. The team whose stone is closest to the button wins the game.
9. Each team is allowed 60 minutes to complete its shots in an 8-end game. There are NO time-outs. A team's clock starts when an opponent's rock comes to a stop, or passes the back line, and the opposing team leaves the house. A stone that has been released within the 60-minute time period continues in play until it has come to rest. there is a period of dead time at the completion of each end. The umpire will advise teams when to start play for the next end. Any coach that travels with the team are only allowed to access the ice area and/or meet with their respective teams at 4th end break. During play, they must sit behind the glass upstairs. The 4th end break is 10 minutes in length.
10. If a team runs out of time, the opposing players may play their remaining shots, in rotation, until the game is completed or their time expires.
11. An umpire makes any measures required and is available to clarify any rule. An umpire's time-out is called, and the time clock is stopped, on all such occasions.

Cool maybe, but also very very bad. :o Really shocking result for Germany, especially since the next ECC will be in Garmisch. :(

But congrats to the men! :D They were always behind until the 9th end where they scored 3, but only because Sweden missed an easy takeout. Not sure why, I was only following it on the net.

I had to get a new nickname because my other one has been suspended of its posting rights for some unknown reason. Anyways.

I have had a decent curling season. We right now have only lost one game in our league, We should probably end up making league finals. I am so mad, I found out that my team could have made playdowns to get to provincials because there were 6 spots out of the city and only 6 teams showed up. It was too late.

Anyways, the Curling season is just heating up. Lets hope for more good curling this year and someone else to win the Scott!

The Scott Tournament of Hearts Field is almost set

Alberta- Cathy King
British Columbia- Kelly Scott
Saskatchewan- Unknown
Manitoba- Jennifer Jones
Ontario- Jenn Hanna
Quebec- Brenda Nicholls
New Brunswick- Sandy Comeau
Nova Scotia- Kay Zinck
Prince Edward Island- Rebecca Jean Macphee
Newfoundland- Heather Strong
Territories- Kerry Koe
Canada- Colleen Jones

Looks like an ok field. Not as strong as last year. Colleen has to be the overwhelming favorite in this field. Other contenders are Alberta, BC, PEI and Manitoba and maybe SASK depending who makes it out. Dissapointing not to see Middaugh out of Ontario or Larouche out of Quebec, Sherry didnt make Ontario Provincials and Larouche lost the Quebec finals. I just hope someone other than Colleen wins. Manitoba has the strongest team but they havent played all that well this season. Would LOVE to see Jan Betker make it out of SASK. They are an awesome team so that would make the field that much stronger. What are people's thoughts?

The seventh was the best end i have ever seen in my life with some great shot making. Unfortunately ferbey lost on a missed tap and roll to win and was very bitter after the game like he usually is.

Every teams are so young it looks more like a canadian junior championship. It's a shame Marie-France Larouche and Suzanne Gaudet are not there.

Who will win? The Saskatchewan sisters seem very good! Plus they are kind of cute ;). I would bet on them to make the final against Manitoba's Jennifer Jones, with Jones winning. So a Jones at the Worlds anyway.

Btw, what happened to Kelley Law? She was so good 4-5 years ago. I think she took a break to have a baby but it's been so long. Anyboday from BC heard anything?

Jennifer Jones of Manitoba beat Jenn Hanna of Ontario 8-6 after making an in off to hit the stone on the button for her four and in the win. The best shot in Scott History!

But I'm pissed off Hanna lost after being up 5-2. No lead is ever safe:mad:

Jennifer Jones will represent Canada at the worlds.

Manitoba played like crap that entire game, there were huge mistakes and the part of all four players. That said this is still a very strong team and I consider them the favorites heading into the World Championships.

I was cheering for Manitoba that entire game, however I truely thought that Ontario would win after giving up the steals.

The last shot to win was one of the most incredible shots I have ever seen to win a game. I have seen more spectacular shots made(IE Walchuk, Martin, Nedohin) however for a women's team that was awesome. I look forward to seeing how they progress at Worlds. Cathy O is really going to have to up her game though for Canada to have a chance. I still have confidence that Canada will come through with another world title to pick up where Colleen Jones left off.

The reason Ontario lost was because of Pascale's first shot she f*cked that up royally, but Cathy O's last was also a screw up. It was only an amazing shot from Jen that won it.

Good on Team Manitoba!

OT- USA has declared their representatives and Cassie Johnson defeated 2003 World Champion Debbie Mcormick to qualify for the games   dissapointing for Deb I'm sure, as well. Pete Fenson won the mens but the USA still has to qualify. They have the last spot though I hope New Zealand or Australia gets the spot.

What an awesome final!

I was indeed a great match! What pisses me off is that Jenn did three fantastic shot (two great draws in the four foot and that thourgh the port shot) while Jones did only one....Only that one shot was for like 4

But it isn't necessary to put the blame on pascale. She was the best third of the whole tourney, and without her i don,t think jenn actually would be in the finals (jenn is inconstistent!) Anyone knows where Pascale comes from? I know St-Hyaçainte but from what team she played, etc? Cause she really was out of nowhere!

Well when i herd we had the avatars back, i couldn't resist but put my new favorite curler up there

Yeah I'm definatly a new fan of Jenn too! She made the most amazing shots all week long. I felt so bad for her at the end of the game. She outplayed Manitoba during 9 ends and 7 rocks but still lost. I hope she come back next year for Ontario. But on the other hand I feld bad for Jennifer Jones all game because she was playing awful and it was disapointing after a great week for her. In the 8th and 9th hand she looked so down, I really thought it was all over for her.

Now it's gonna be very interesting to see how Canada do at the worlds without Coleen Jones for once. I heard that it will be the Page playoff system now at the worlds instead of the single elimation semi final. It's very good for Canada as usually we top the round robin standing. Hopefully we won't be shout out of the medals anymore like Colleen was too many times...

Finally the future looks very good for women's curling! With Hanna, Jones, Scott, Layton, Larouche, Gaudet and others, Canada will continue to dominate for sure.

Now bring on the Brier!

I think your message is full of truth like usual Canuckfan ;)

I think the young teams really are getting dangerously good, Marie-France i think if she would have played a good alst shot in the provincials she could ahve won it all! Anyway, the first girls are really trying hard to go back where they were last year!

I tihink ill ask Marie-France if she knows in what team Pascale played beofre Hanna!

BTW, i play in a bonspiel in like 3 weeks where Marie-France plays each year, i would so love to face her, it would be such an honor!

Yes the young guns are out for the big prizes and therefore are grabbing respect. Consider Suzanne Gaudet who in her first year out of juniors made the final and also Brad Gushue in his 2nd year out had a 6-5 record and is contending for the title.
Well anywho Jennifer Jones will represent Canada proudly.

ktoles2005

The Brier starts tomorrow in my home city of Edmonton.

I expect the following teams to contend...

Alberta
Saskatchewan
Ontario
Quebec
Nova Scotia
Newfoundland

I hope anyone of those teams except Ferbey win. I can not stand the Ferbey team for the simple fact that they are so damn arrogant. Their heads are 10 times the size of their bodies. I don't mean to offend anyone but thats just the way it is, I have seen them time and again and thats how they always come off.

Saskatchewan is a good young team. Pat Simmons barely lost a Grand Slam Final to Jeff Stoughton and are very highly ranked. They should be a contender at the end of the week.

Wayne Middaugh could also contend but the only reason he is here is to get an Olympic Trials spot which ironically his wife Sherry has. Reading interviews in the local papers he has been extremely apathetic about winning the actual Brier he just wants to do good enough to win the trials spot which may mean him winning if Gushue or Ferbey arent top 2.

Quebec could play spoiler, by far the best team to come out of that province in a while, I do not believe they will win but could be in the playoffs and spoil a few teams hopes.

Nova Scotia and Shawn Adams are also a good team. Paul Flemming has won a couple of mixed and Kelly Mittlestadt won World Juniors in 1994 so they could also be there at the end of the week but I figure they will have something like a 6-5 record.

Newfoundland is the team I am hoping for. Brad Gushue is an awesome skip and will hopefully come through with Newfoundland's second Brier. They have an awesome team and I expect to give Ferbey the biggest competition.

Not as good a field as in the past but should be some decent competition.

WOW Steven will get pissed of your post katoles...

I really like the ferbey team, Nedohin is a god and when ferbey will leave, hell be a great canadian skip of his own!

Talking about the Roberge/Menard team, i really see them doing good. When i saw them play last week, i was incredibly impressed...ESP Roberge, his technique is flawless and his agility has no limit!

Talking about aslt week, i never was surrounded by that much talent since the trois-rivieres junior worlds. I arrived at my club, and i saw the Francis Crete team (quebec junior champion, former canadian finalist) sitting. Then i went to play, and it was beside Marie-Christine cantin (quebec girl's junior champion and former canadian junior finalist). Then when i came outnof the ices, the Marie-France Larouche team was there like usual, and the Menard/Roberge team was getting on the ice. So the 4 champion teams from quebec were actually all around me. It was great!

Hey!

I did go and watched some action the other day, it was great fun! The Olympic curling facility is actually beautiful and you can breathe in a nice atmosphere... it wasn't obviously packed, still some fans were really loud and nice. The guys from the US kept ringing cow bells, which could get even a bit annoying at times... :p The Scots were great! A couple of them wore kilts and a funny red-heaired wig - in a perfect Scottish stereotype  - and they had this nice coreography they would repeat with every good action of their boys!
The Canucks were more silent, but maybe it's also coz they were losing to the US... The guys from Scandinavia were in the midst of a derby, with a Denmark-Norway clash

The championships are still in the round robin phase, with the semifinals scheduled from Friday, if I remember correctly... if I get the chance I'll go there again so I can post a little update and hopefully also a few pics.

Thank GOD Shawn Adams beat Randy Ferbey's team last night! Maybe now they'll give credit to another team, and Ferbey will get his ginormous head out of his prickly ass! Well Jennifer Jones will NOT make the podium at worlds which in my opinion is absolute crap. Cathy G and Jill actually played very well the whole game just a couple misses from Jill but Cathy O and Jennifer played like crap. Against Norway that is just simply unacceptable. They could not adjust to the ice this entire week. The absolute best teams will be able to figure out what is going on and get it dealt with but Jennifer didn't do that and I think that is inexperience on her part. She kept missing shots and taking the same amount of ice on her next one and she never changed the amount of ice that she took. The 8th and 9th ends were what really blew it and they had their chances. I just only hope that the Canadian Men have better luck in Victoria.

Well well well......Guess what.....

Me and my team killed the Francois Roberge team (who had only him as a pro player though) 6-1 in 4 ends :D I played the best amtch of my life, i played near 100%, maybe like 95%, and I'm the third. My skip only had guards to put and Francois tried like 4 double-raises cause it was the only way he could make shots. I'm so incredibly happy!

He tried to impress us by sliding from end to the other, worked at first, but i thought i would choke. The oppostie completely happened, I always seem to play great when a great player is either watching me or playing against me *remembers the great draws on the pin he did against Marie-France's dad while she was watching* ;)

CCA Nixes deal with CBC
courtesy CBC Sports

(Jul 6, 2005) -- Less than six months after losing the Olympic broadcast rights for 2010 and 2012, the CBC was left reeling on Wednesday after the Canadian Curling Association pulled out of a four-year contract with the television network.

Nancy Lee, head of CBC Sports, was notified in the morning that the CCA had sent out a request for proposal to all networks to pick up the rights for the 2005-06 season and beyond.

Curling fans won't be able to watch Randy Ferbey and his Alberta rink defend its Brier title on CBC next season.

"We advised them, strenuously, that they were repudiating on our contract and as a result, we would be seeking legal recourse," Lee told CBC Sports Online. "As far as we're concerned we have three more years of a deal.

"You don't get up and walk away from a signed legal document. It's very disappointing that despite all of the efforts made by CBC, the CCA is unwilling to fulfill its commitment to us."

The CBC was the subject of much criticism from curling fans and media for its coverage last winter. Fans were infuriated when they learned they had to subscribe to the digital cable channel Country Canada to watch the night draws.

The main network televised a live draw in the afternoon.

"Curling fans had a difficult time adjusting to our broadcast schedule and that's to be expected," said Lee. "But it was passed by the [CCA] board unanimously, so there were no surprises for the board."

Lee said the CCA had insisted on one broadcaster during contract negotiations last year, a proposal that also was backed by the board.

Last month, the CBC gave up its right as the sole broadcaster, offering the CCA the chance to find another network to broadcast the initial weekend of coverage and weekday matches.

"We were open to end the business case for Country Canada," Lee said.

I'm pissed that 2 years in a row now Maria Prytz and her team beat Annette Norberg in national competetion.. I wanna watch Anette Norberg in EC and WC :fiery:

i think for the EC, the Swedish teams were chosen based on performance..

I'm not dissing curling, but why is it considered a sport? It resembles more a game - like darts, 10-pin bowling and golf - than a sport.

It requires teamwork, you have to move over the ice and be quick and alert to not touch any stones. serious footwork

It's not really an athletic sport though but it requires lots of training to compete at highest level such as olympics

This is true. Anyone can play, but to be an elite curler takes a lot of fitness training.

Congrats also to the Swedish men!!

I'd say it's a precision sport just like shooting sports.

Or actually it's more than that, curling requires also strategical skills, just like e.g. tennis. If chess is a sport (I'm not dissing chess here), then curling is.

I think Scotland will win the final regardless who is their opponent.

at the world championships next year I expect China to do very well again!

So dissapointed in China losing their first 5 matches.

they are now 2-5 but too late to make play offs with 4 more matches..

I've been watching. Haven't yet seen what happened today. I guess yesterday now.

I haven't seen China play, but yeah I saw an update of their first match they were down 10-0 to Denmark

They did beat an undefeated Sweden though, so that's something.

Hopefully, the Swiss continue their freefall and Canada takes advantage to get in the top 4. :drive:

Sweden and Scotland seem to be lock for the play offs.

China now 4/5 winning 4 in a row beating USA and Sweden on the way. They just had a terrible start :(

yes indeed  They'll end this tournament 1-10

Too bad for Swiss, they have small chance to make play offs I think.

Last spot seems to be between Russia and USA and they play their last RR match tonight.

If Russia wins they're 4th into play off, if USA wins they need to play tiebreaker with Swiss or Russia I think.

In Canada its very difficult to qualify. They have at least 10 good teams so its very hard to get through the nationals there.

Yeah, its hard just getting out your own province sometimes. We have only one team representing each province at the nationals. Stephanie Lawton has lost the Saskatchewan final 3 yrs in a row. Amber Holland is also from Sask. she didn't make this year either. Cheryl Bernard also didn't qualify for the nationals this year out of Alberta. Nedohin is also Albertan, but she automatically qualified as defending champ representing as Team Canada. So, another team represented Alberta.

Jennifer Jones went undefeated during RR at the nationals. Homan went 10-1 (only loss to Jones, ofc.) But in the playoffs Homan beat Jones twice in a row. So, here they are at the worlds.

Sweden just won men's World Ch'ship, to follow the European Ch'ship from last December. They were struggling to make the play-offs but win over Canada in the last round robin game gave them a play-off spot. And they were clearly the best team in the playoffs, so a deserved title for them.

Quite surprising, Sweden won both men's Euros and Worlds last year, now they're out of the playoffs. Still probably too good against Finland, we'd need to win them to even retain a chance to remain in the Group A for next year and to qualify for next spring's Worlds.

Ah I just found this article concerning Privivkova and the team! http://www.snowalps.com/sport/curling/news/liudmila-privivkova-esclusa-dalla-nazionale-e-da-sochi-2014

Liudmila Privivkova, skip'' gold medal at the European Championships in 2006 won on'' Italian Diana Gaspari, was excluded from the national team and then by the next Winter Games. The basis of the decision of the Swiss technical Thomas Lips there would be'' the 27-year old Muscovite incompatibility of character with the rest of the group.

Despite the success a year ago the European Championships in Karlstad, Sweden, under the guidance of new coach Thomas Lips, for some time the balance of the team seemed to be at risk for the difficult coexistence between Privivikova and the new star Ana Sidorova. '' Even under the protective wing of the Matryoshka Olga Andrianova, torpedoed and replaced by Swiss engineer, both players had been moved to the role or leave the bench. Lips has imposed a real ultimatum to the Russian federation that has accepted the painful exclusion. In the statements of the technical difficulties have been highlighted in the player relate with teammates and with the staff. The fact remains that Russia, among the candidates for a women's medal at the Olympics, it deprives a skip from the reserve'' undisputed value. In the upcoming European Championships in Stavanger, Norway, was convened in its place a'' blonde, the second Alexandra Saitova, gold in World Junior'' last played right on the ice in Sochi.

-

fuck them, Sidorova is always flopping anyway. Privivkova is 100 times better than that junior that's throwing 2nd in the team now...

If anyone should be kicked out it's this coach, he's not exactly booking good results with the girls WITHOUT Privivkova... factually they're worse.
