Currently unranked (using the superior single black dot) so no one reps me much.

Career high was #3 and I still have 12 million points to bad rep you all with. And, yes, I do peak now and then to see if any reps have come in. :hehehe:

It's completely meaningless now, as proven by the fact that the #17 ranked poster joined 5 weeks ago, and has only 134 posts (http://www.wtaworld.com/search.php?searchid=188357) obviously heavily in the Rep Whore threads, even edging out the my old buddy SJW, who just about everybody here likes. (And some, like Cari, even) :tape:

And its not meaningless, the person who is number one has the title - "biggest rep whore" :) And the people that do well enjoy turning trolls red in one go 2 :wavey:A rep whore can also partially "immunize" a troll though. Plus who the fuck cares if when they're banned within hours, they're "red or green"? Furthermore, RU willing to tell everyone here that the "unknown #17 after 5 weeks and 134 posts" (Xiojuana) http://www.wtaworld.com/search.php?searchid=188357) deserves 2B ahead of all but 16 of the following (see the first few pages):

http://www.wtaworld.com/memberlist.php?&order=DESC&sort=reputation&pp=30&ltr=

And if not, let's admit the truth. Poe and Amanda knew full well when they removed the 32,000 point "cap" without "freezing" how many "points per rep" one could (give or take) that this would happen. But it was a desperation play to increase activity, like a Hail Mary pass in American football.

exactly....dont worry, as long as u know that u guys are top 10 in my book, it should be good enough.i mean, i dont even know the starter of this thread and i'm sure she's ranked higher than me.

its like this. we know venus is better than what she's ranked. we know kim is better than what she's ranked. who cares?

The many green dots I've gotten from posters I respect are the same to me, whether they "give me" a thousand points or 50,000. But UR correct in one sense: not meritocracy in that having more (than 1 million plus) points would make me more "worthy", but in that the system was cynically corrupted by the ppl who run this place.

wrong? well only you can say what you actually think...but something got lost in the translation of your posts on this subject.

i'll buy that you don't care about the 'points' you receive...but...you're not happy about people getting repped just for the sake of getting repped. and if you really think that placing a cap on the number of points you can give out will STOP rep-whoring

but take heart, roger...not every poster is a rep whore...some are very selective ;)

Something that feeds on itself, because the more whores "trade" the less other ppl's points seemingly represent. Once again: Poe and (other) Amanda, you both know the system (as is now) is totally fucked up.

How I would do it, and I'm not admitting to anything, is create like 4-5 identities here and then have them rep each other back and forth, and then you can see.

well...maybe ;) if you can only give a fixed amount of rep after reaching the old limit, then rep-whorers would STILL be on top of the list...you get what i'm saying? there's really no way to keep from abusing the system unless you go back into the database and change the data type from 'integer' back to 'small integer.'

but really...i don't see this as such a big problem. if i get good reps just so i will rep them back, i immediately don't take as much satisfaction from that rep as i do from someone like, say...crazy canuck. ya know what i mean?

Helen I mean Miss Lawson, :p there's another "angle" here. Posters have probably created multiple identities @ least in part to "rep themselves" plus, the more points one has, the more one can give out. And a really rep-obsessed person could even have "identities" as a Williams fan, a "Momosapien", a Russophile, a Kim loyalist, etc. to enhance it with "points to self-trade" from each "camp".

Amanda, you're technically correct, but a cap on how many can be "given or taken" would lessen the perceived incentive (inc. for the "split personality game" I just described). Furthermore, I long ago said that those "barter threads" should be deleted. And did you ever even hear of "Xiojuana" B4 this thread?

GBFH

i don't know if it would lessen the incentive...points are points, and if that gap is realllllllly close between first and second place, i think it would make people even BIGGER rep whores...try to get to a bigger audience, ya know?

Well, I'm not admitting to anything here, at all, but I would NOT go to that much trouble. Theoretically, people might have multiple identities just to have multiple identities and, once in awhile, they get curious about rep points, so they trade a few to see. That's all I'm saying, and I'm not saying I've done any of this.

And xiojuana may be a magnificent person. But the only ways someone can vault to 17th place after 5 weeks, with 134 posts are:

1) multiple ID's and the "self-repping" Helen and I joked about B4.

2) begging and offering swaps, ala Anton's old PM and rep comments.

1) multiple ID's and the "self-repping" Helen and I joked about B4.

you would have to be a very sad person to do that. Firstly, you have to have 50 posts to rep people with green dots ;) and even if you did manage to get to 50, youd only be able to give 1 rep (to yourself) every so often anyway, and it wouldnt significantly add to your points total.

To see your reputation points or ranking? For ranking, the top 30 are on page 1, next 30 on page 2, next 30 on page 3 etc.

oh, just a question. how do we know how much rep points we can give out?
Your total rep points/100. For the good rep points of course.
Your bad rep points would be worth your total rep points/200.

Good, I'll be happy to enlighten you. :) IMO, this board would be a more vibrant place if the owners didn't act like we're a bunch of kids @ recess in elementary school.

And the apparent "Lets give them this candy called rep points, and the hell with any mechanisms to keep it proportional to perceived post quality" keeps the "dynamic" where they treat us like sheep.

If the owners acted like we're a bunch of kids @ recess in elementary school, why would you even think of posting in here? Afterall, most of us are a bunch of kids @ recess ;) Not your jolly goodfella posters that you'd hope to meet in here, eh?

Ekkekko
Oct 14th, 2004, 01:04 PM

Yes, i've heard of Xiojuana before. Well, i don't suppose i can say that i've heard of her but yes, i've read her posts in CT. SHe's a nice mate and our simple lil PMs had blossomed into a meaningful friendship. Besides, what's so wrong about this barter thread thingy? If it's a game that we enjoy playing, so be it. One can choose to either join in the fun or ignore it. It's as simple as that. I find it hillarious and those lil remarks next to my reps just tickle me pink! I can't change the way you feel about barter threads like this and i don't feel that i need to continue nitpicking your posts about barter threads.

I personally get a kick out of the comments I get, and I like giving them, too, but that's about as seriously as I take it. Does ANYONE take the number of dots next to someone's name seriously as a measure of posting quality? It's a game, we all KNOW it's a game. This is a solution in search of a problem.

Does ANYONE take the number of dots next to someone's name seriously as a measure of posting quality? It's a game, we all KNOW it's a game. This is a solution in search of a problem.Since the dots "max out" so quickly in either direction, what the hell does the # displayed tell one anyway? (Poe and Amanda probably never changed that when they "opened the floodgates" so you rarely see ppl with less than the max. # of greens or reds anymore).

And Griffin is "talking in circles" here: of course the # of dots wouldn't mean anything (even without having been rendered a statistical joke based on how quickly they "max out"). Therefore, WTF is the purpose of having them?

Posters have said in other threads that they like the feature as an alternative to sending PM's, etc. OK. But Griffin and others know that its all just a gimmick to try and increase board activity. There are better ones, but P & A "know it all" right?

See previous posts, re: "toy," "game," and "it's fun."

What is the purpose of incessantly whining and complaining about a feature you can simply ignore/not use?Fair question. The answer goes back to the old: "Is this only a business, or also a cyber-community" debate. If it had ever really been treated by P & A as the latter, ppl like me would have given them specific, detailed ways to increase traffic and revenue.

I won't rehash the litany of examples showing the "semi contempt" I feel they've shown for the members (except their old Sanex board buddies, mainly) but they first erect that "cyber Berlin Wall" then try to save the board via "lowest common denominator" tricks.

In the scenario I mentioned, they have pro Kim, Justine, Jen, Momo, Serena, Anna, or whoever identities. So all they need do is exceed 50 with each ID, inc. in their forums, plus GM and tournament threads. Then that ID gets points from legit members of that fan base happy 2C "a new loyalist".

So each ID runs them up rather quickly (esp. by repping those ppl back) and also "cross-reps" the other ID's said poster created. Then does some bartering and begging (inc. in those Chat threads) and voila: a few "posters" with ova a million points are created out of thin air. (Maybe Leena should try this).
