It looks scary, but it's probably going to be retarded. Usually the commercials look good, then the films are so-so. Like 'The Ring', I thought that was going to be scary and it wasn't at all.

The website for 'The Grudge' is pretty cool.

Ok i watched it last night, after watching French & Saunders (thought I'd watch that instead) and I was quite disappointed. Although a very good film, it wasn't as "scary" as people made out. If I hadn't read this thread I would have though it was a good film, but because I had high expectations and expected to be scared shitless I'm quite disappointed. IMHO I think that Audition was a lot scarier, and that The Grudge reminded me a bit of My Little Eye. Anyway, The Grudge is a good film and much better than The Ring!

Tonight I'm gonna watch The Last House on The Left and The Hills Have Eyes, followed by Wrong Turn and then The Butterfly Effect, and if we're still awake I will watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

spoilers....

ok i just got back. It was kind of a disapointment. I may have enjoyed it better if there weren't rude fucking kids screaming and talking so loud throughout the whole thing. It wasn't scary at all since all the "tricks" were telegraphed so far in advance. The story was a little dumb too... it boiled down to a stalker plot  I don't know why Peter killed himself. So the woman was stalking you and got her husband pissed off enough to kill himself and her and their son... no reason to throw yourself off the balcony... and what happened to his wife? She looked like a hooker when Sarah Michelle Geller went to visit her.

Did anybody see that other Japanese scary movie
[Chakushin Ari (Call waiting) ] ?

It stars the fantastic Kou Shibasaki(Battle Royale and
other films, show etc..), and it's another one of those
people being haunted then killed in weird ways film.
This one is rather gimmicky and has the freaky phone call
that you never made to your mobile handphone of yourself
about to die an ugly death from something or another.

I bet Hollywood has dibs on this re-make. :p

I do believe they ran out of ideas in Japan. :tape:

I'm sorry, but I laughed at every "scary" part because it was just soooooo stupid.

Please, people screamed at the stupidest things, and when you could already tell what was going to happen before it happen.

Since I won't give away any scenes, I'll make up something. People screamed when, say, a dog was scratching at the door, and you hear his bark, then when the person opened the door, the dog jumped on him. That's what the entire movie was like. You could tell what was going to happen before it happened, yet people still screamed.

There was no suspense at all.

The movie is definitely NOT worth the $10 to go see it.

Two Thumbs down.

SAW is my favourite film of the year. Jigsaw is just sooo fucking twisted, but it aint THAT gross. It's more clever really. I watched it with my bf and we were both just shocked by the twists in the film (rather than the gorey bits, even though some of the scenes are disturbing), it's really clever.

I suggest everyone sees that film, MUCH BETTER THAT SE7EN in my opinion!

Pff, I loved every millisecond of this movie. I definately did NOT expect everything that was going to happen, and evne if I did it was scary anyway. I love to be scared though, so I usually go in to these types of movies wanting to get spooked. Honestly, the acting isn't amazing...but it doesn't need to be. It was a fucking awesome movie, and the scariest movie I've ever seen.

I LOVE scary movies, but this one was just not scary at all for me.

I found myself laughing instead of screaming, it was that stupid.

Not to mention that the whole plot of the story was very stupid in itself.

But, to each his own, I guess.

I haven't seen the re-make; but you have to understand Japanese
scary films are more mood oriented with subtle hints tossed in here
and there w/ a big in your face push. The films also tend to rely alot
of the actors total belief that this is really happening without it
turning into inside joke. Check out the other thread RING 2, and
I give you some fine recommendations of Japanese spooky movies
that you can find on DVD or VHS at your local rental shop.

I read the reviews of the GRUDGE: remake and well...they changed the
plot and made some parts more obvious and other parts vague. So...
I think the we Americans tend to like a more brisk pace in our
films. The Japanese films remind me more of the pacing in
older US films like [Rosemary's Baby] or the [Omen]. It's not
movies where you can skip parts or go to the bathroom or refrig
because little details will be missed and you'll be saying WTF
is going on? huh? with the storyline.

What's the big plot difference? Anybody who has seen the *GRUDGE
film version with Okina Megumi and the one out right now with
SMG?

There's alot of versions out of JU-ON. A made for tv series.
A film version that went straight to video, and a for theaterical
release version. For the record the one everyone seems to
have seen or talk about is the theaterical release version with
Okina Megumi. Trivia time!- Chiaki "Go-Go from Kill Bill Vol 1.
Kuriyama is in both the film version that went straight to video
and the regular theaterical released one. :p

I'm afraid to even mention the crappy JU-ON 2 that came out
this year, which I avoided when it came into the local theaters
here. Watched the trailer online, and it did not look good.
It revolves around the same story; but with the main character
being a news reporter. :tape:

Greenout ..... Chiaki Kuriyama isnt in the Ju-On: The grudge. She is only in Ju-On the video. The Grudge is the one that came out in the cinema (theaterical version) and Chiaki isn't in that

I forget the girl that plays the part you think is Chiaki, but it isn't her.

Really? She's on the tv series, right? This is getting so
confusing.

Ok- Let's just go with what Ayla.Y has posted. She's only
is in the video version. :p

Greenout
Oct 24th, 2004, 09:25 AM
Ju-on has 4 versions.

There were two straight to video releases .... which were called Ju-On and Ju-On 2.
Now Chiaki played some school girl in Ju-On but wasn't in it for alot.
The success of the two video's meant that a cinema version was in demand so they made Ju-On: The Grudge. This was based on the first Ju-On video but was different. They then released a second cinema movie Ju-On 2: The Curse (i think) .... which was a sequal to the first cinema version.
The Amercian "the grudge" is based on Ju-On: The Grudge the cinema release :)

Got that everybody?!

Thank you AY. :worship:

'Grudge' Delivers Shock at Box Office
Sunday October 24 2:05 PM ET

"The Grudge (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808578511)," a low-budget horror movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800018814&cf=gen), delivered an additional shock on Sunday by selling $40 million worth of tickets in its first three days at the North American box office, doubling the expectations of its distributor.

The Columbia Pictures project, a remake of a Japanese haunted-house thriller that was released in the United States earlier this year, took over the No. 1 slot from the cartoon "Shark Tale (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808405841)," which had been the top movie for the past three weeks.

"If we would have done twenty (million dollars), we would have been ecstatic," said Rory Bruer, president of domestic distribution at the Sony Corp-owned studio.

Gellar, perhaps best-known for playing the title character in TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer (http://tv.yahoo.com/tvpdb?d=tvi&cf=0&id=1807777641)," plays an American in Tokyo who must outwit a ghoulish presence. The PG-13-rated film was directed by Takashi Shimizu (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1808570511&cf=gen), who also made the original, "Ju-On (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808570509&cf=info)." Bruer said the remake cost less than $10 million to produce, and a sequel is in the cards.

DreamWorks' "Shark Tale" earned $14.3 million for the three days beginning Friday, taking its total to $136.9 million. But the privately held studio was less successful with its latest movie, "Surviving Christmas (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808406120)," starring Ben Affleck (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800018969&cf=gen) and James Gandolfini (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800018582&cf=gen), which opened at No. 7 with a disappointing $4.5 million. DreamWorks distribution president Jim Tharp said he had hoped it would open closer to $7 million.

The top 10 contained one other new entrant, "I Heart Huckabees (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808471272)," which jumped two places to No. 10 with $3 million after expanding its theater count in its fourth weekend. David O. Russell (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800026357&cf=gen)'s twisted comedy has been big in college towns, but it appeared to flunk with audiences elsewhere. The film was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, a unit of News Corp.'s Fox Entertainment Group Inc .

Rounding out the top five, Miramax Films' Jennifer Lopez (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800023864&cf=gen)-Richard Gere (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800017075&cf=gen) romantic comedy "Shall We Dance? (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808472913) rose one place to No. 3 with $8.6 million after expanding its theater count in its second weekend. Its total now stands at $24.4 million.

Universal Pictures' "Friday Night Lights (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808575730)," starring Billy Bob Thornton (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800018605&cf=gen) as the coach of a high school football team, fell two to No. 4 with $7 million in its third weekend. Its score rose to $47.3 million.

The marionette comedy "Team America: World Police (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808579381)" fell two places to No. 5 with $6.6 million in its second weekend, taking the total for the Paramount Pictures release to $22.3 million. Miramax is a unit of Walt Disney Co. Universal is a unit of General Electric Co.-controlled NBC Universal. Paramount is a unit of Viacom Inc.

I saw it last night in a theater packed with screaming teenagers. I should have gone to Shaun of the Dead instead! Anyway, I thought is was a well-paced film based on an interesting premise. Interestingly enough, Sarah was not the main focus of the film; it was the theme, that death leaves its imprint long after a person is dead, that took center stage in the film.

Next up for me, Dawn of the Dead DVD and Shaun of the Dead in the theater. This close to Halloween, I cannot get enough of those zombies!

I just saw it and I really enjoyed it. I thought that it was very well made and it had alot of creepy moments. The kid in the movie was just creepy. I liked it and im a huge horror movie fan. There is virtually no gore or blood, no nudity or language and I STILL liked it. Its definetely worth checking out in my book. WAY, WAY better than The Ring

I have yet to watch the movie, but do you think it's worth the money if I have watched the Japanese version? Because seemingly it's a complete photocopy.
