Britons Fear Spiders More Than Terrorists

LONDON (AP) -- Spiders are more scary than terrorists -- at least according to a survey of a thousand Britons released Monday.

Household creepy crawlies frighten Britons more than terrorist attacks, or even death, the survey found.

Terrorism only came second on the list of respondents' top ten fears, according to the survey conducted by RSGB Omnibus for Universal Pictures UK Ltd. The survey was based on telephone interviews of 1,000 aged 16 to 55 across Britain on Sept. 22-26.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/misc/spacer.gif Another crawling phobia -- snakes -- was ranked third, followed by a fear of heights. Death came in a surprising fifth place as the nation's greatest fear.

``It's not surprising that terrorist attacks came only second to creepy crawlies,'' said psychologist Donna Dawson, hired by Universal Pictures to comment the survey. ``This is because fear of small creatures that scuttle about on four or more legs is a much more ancient, primordial fear, going straight back to caveman days.''

A visit to the dentist came in sixth place, followed by needles and injections, and fear of public speaking -- whether professionally or at family events. Fear of debt came in ninth position, beating concerns over flying.

Also listed, other fears such as criminality, failure, ghosts, or even the fear of the future, did not make the top ten list of things that frighten Britons most.

Aileen Coulson, a spokeswoman for Universal Pictures, which commissioned the survey to coincide with the DVD release of Van Helsing, a horror movie featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, said the findings would provide ``some great ammunition for Halloween,'' adding a prank spider was sure to ``put the 'willies' up a friend, colleague or family member.''

yep, ill go with that. a terrorist i would at least have a fighting chance of defending myself against. the sight of a spider sends me into a state of shock. i lose the feelings in my legs, cant breath etc etc. i couldnt kill a spider because i cant even look at one. a terrorist i could kill if i had to.

2nd would be the dentist, 3rd heights, 4th canal locks. in fact i dont really think about terrorism coz there's no fear of it where i live.

terrorists arnt everywhere.....spiders are! :scared:

Oh yeah, spiders scare me shitless. I don't really think about terrorists, I didn't worry about sharks when I went diving, I like snakes, but spiders :scared: At least I know a terrorist can't hide under my pillow.

and at least terrorists are a rational fear. the worst thing about an irrational fear or a phobia is that u have no control over your fear or your response to it. i know killing a spider is easier than killing a terrorist but i couldnt do it! shooting a terrorist would be so much easier for me than trying to tread on a fat, hairy spider! even tho logically the spider should be the easier enemy to irradicate. but its coz its all in the mind, your heads fucked by your fear and youre powerless!

We get huge spiders in our house sometimes. My cousin had a pet tarantula and the house spiders I get sometimes are atleast half the size of a tarantula sometimes bigger.

I'm shit scared of spiders. I was home alone once and I had to get my next door neighbour into kill a spider. It's true, we are more scared of spiders. Until a terrorist attack actually happens to you, it's always just something that happens on tv.

Same here Sarah. My auntie and I had to wait up until 3am for my uncle to get home from his shift so he could move the spider which was hiding in the corner by the door. None of us would move  It was huge! And we both sat there with our feet up!

So true. My girlfriend always laughed at me cause I was scared of spiders and she thought it was stupid of me cause we don't have poisonous ones... and in FL there are black widows and all kinds of evil spiders and according to her that's something to be semi-scared of... not harmless British ones. So... I was thinking maybe she had a point. Then she came to Britain for a few weeks and was in my living room when this huge, gigantic [insert any other word for big - here] spider appeared on the wall. It was the size of my hand. Anyway... she fainted  :tape:

Ugh! I hate house spiders. And I can spot them really well... I always notice them out of the corner of my eye... It's instinct! I try not to kill them though, it's not their fault I'm a whimp... so usually I try and catch them in a glass. However, sometimes as a last resort I squish them. It's them or me!

You haven't seen a spider until you've experienced a British one! It's just their size and speed...

The worst spiders are those you see just before you go to sleep. Your in bed, the lights off. The TV is on watching Late Night Trisha on ITV. Then you see something move on the ceiling, and your not sure what it is, because it's so dark and the light from the TV doesn't show it well. You think its your imagination until you see something move again. You still don't wanna get up, so you look at the dark figure. It doesn't move. Then it moves. You jump up and switch the light on and its a big motherf*cker on the ceiling. Brown, huge body, long skinny legs. You start screaming. Hyping yourself up to kill it. You move in close with the TV guide you get with Saturday's Sun paper. You look at the spider and start screaming, running down to your dad's room, crying and asking him to take it away. You can't bear to be upstairs when he takes the spider out, you run downstairs and hide in the kitchen and only come back up when you know its safe. You then search the room (with you dad still there) until you are satisfied there are no more.

God I hate those days!!!

lol, sounded like you were describing me whenever I see a spider :o

I hate them too, I'm always the last one to go to sleep and of course they have to come out then. So I always have to go and wake someone up. My mom only kills the little ones, so I have to yell for my dad or brother to kill them. Yeah, they have to be dead.

Last year there was really a really big spider on my room door, I'll never forget. I went to sleep around 2 am, was trying not to make too much noise, and turned out the light in the hall, and was one step away from my door, and then though 'did I see something in the corner of my eye?' Turned the light back on and there it was, really huge spider, I almost touched it with my hand to open my door, I just started screaming and thought I would faint, everyone in the house was awake again, even my dad admitted it was a HUGE one. I went downstairs again and only went to sleep a few hours later.

I always close my eyes and put my hands over my ears when someone kills a spider :o Whenever I enter a room, I first check if there's no spider somewhere and I'm the only one in the house who actually notice them.
It happens so often i go into a room in the house a few minutes after somenone was in it. And there it is, I can never understand, didn't they see it? Do they do it to give me a heart attack??? :fiery:

I know I'm such a wimp :D

i agree with the poll anda logical one too, as much as in the lights of recent terrorists attack. The chance of you coming across a terroist is probably far lower than meeting a spider
