I remember seeing her play years ago against in Tashkent I believe. She really impressed me there. She hit some surrealistic shots and I believe she won the tournament as well. I kind of became a fan of her since then. I'm glad she's finally back after all that injury misery...:)

Agree :)

Iroda said she was mentally tired and didn't have the same power has on Tuesday

Im a bit worried about her serve though its sounds like its gone very weak due to the surgery even Serra Zanetti (who would know about a weak serve ;) ) said this

Hopefully its just due to lack of matchplay

Does anyone now her next tournament :confused: :wavey:

Iroda didn't play Vesnina but #3 seed and former Top 30 player Henrieta Nagyova and won 6-3 2-6 6-2 :bounce: :yeah:

Here's a report of the match from obatafan :)

Q Iroda Tulyaganova UZB d. (3) Henrieta Nagyova SVK 6-3 2-6 6-2

Iroda and Henrieta played the best match of the tournament so far, the level was just so much higher than anyone else. You could tell that these two should have been nowhere near this dump! Iroda's serve seems to have lost a bit of its zip, but essentially she is just a rustier version of her old self, and Henrieta should be absolutely fine in her quest to recapture old form too. Both were very powerful, consistent and fighting very hard and wanted the win badly. Henya has a very irritating coach who was telling us to "Shhhh!" all the time which pissed me off, so I did it right back in her face when she began audibly coaching Nagyova She wasn't amused. Anyhow, Iroda was playing fantastic tennis in the first and third sets that could match anyone in the world, and Henrieta was matching her most of the time, but in the big points you could see who was rustier. Henya played very well in the middle set, hitting big winners off an impressive forehand and serving very powerfully and consistently. Iroda yelled and screamed a lot, with a lot of line calls questioned. She looks like Jayne Middlemiss. She has the whole package, and is a big candidate to win this tournament the way she was playing. I had great pleasure in laughing at the coach when all the Slovakians had lost by the end of the evening, but was for Henya. I managed to sneak a "Molodets!" in for Iroda and she smiled and said thanks . I look forward to her next match.

:D

She next faces Lenka Tvaroskaya :hearts:

Q Iroda Tulyaganova UZB d. Lenka Tvaroskova SVK 6-4 6-2

After that essay, I shall write less on this. Iroda was clearly superior. Lenka was another one off of the production line i'm afraid, solid and decent and likely to spend her career down in the 200s/300s. She is weaponless, aside from a sunny disposition (haha! she was miserable all match) and was rather lucky to get as many games as she did. Although, she did get us all thinking that maybe she would be profiting from Iroda's rustiness early on, getting a break up but Iroda quickly swatted her away with her powerful serve and groundstrokes and broke her at 4-4 and served out the set. The Slovak then folded as expected to lose this match easily. Iroda is so fun to watch, as she is....passionate. Outwardly. Lots of yelling (my favourite being "Za CHEEEEEEMMMMMM!? (trans: Why/For what!?!?!)) and lots of celebrating her good shots. An interesting and fun player. Her entourage annoy me however, with excessive cheering for her winning points, even if it was a Tvaroskova mistakes . She is the most famous player here I guess, so she needs an entourage. Aside from her entourage, her matches have been very interesting thus far, and I tip her for this tournament as it stands, she is a great fighter and a level above these other girls. Its a shame that herself and Amanda () couldn't have played in the final, as I would have loved to have seen the clash of styles. Oh well, go Iroda

ITF WOMEN'S CIRCUIT (Martina Franca, Italy, clay, ITF $50k)
===================

First-round draw:
* Iroda Tulyaganova [WC] v Valentina Sassi

With Iroda and Jelena Dokic (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/dokic/) playing several ITFs on clay in Italy in recent weeks (why Italy? why not England?), I was wondering when they were going to end up playing the same one! I just hope that neither of them withdraws (yet again). C'mon, let's have an Iroda v Jelena final! :hearts: :hearts:

==================
TASHKENT OPEN 2005 (Tashkent, Uzbekistan; hard; WTA Tier IV)
==================
Qualifying
----------

IRODA TULYAGANOVA [8]:
1q + Daria Kustava, 7-6 (7/1) 6-4
2q + ANASTASSIA RODIONOVA [2], 6-4 6-3

This was Iroda's first main draw on the WTA Tour in 2005. She tried to qualify for Dubai in February, but lost in the first qualifying round.

Then she played six ITF tournaments, interleaved with many withdrawals due to various injuries - the latest an elbow-injury at the end of August, which we feared was a recurrence of the injury that kept her out from July 2003 to October 2004.

But she played the Asian Tennis Championships - also at Tashkent - during the US Open, winning three matches but falling in the semi-finals. She then withdrew from ITF Tbilisi (week of 19th September).

-----------
First round
-----------

+ Iroda Tulyaganova [Q] d. Olga Savchuk, 6-2 6-2

This result put the biggest smile on my face for weeks, after all Iroda's been through since her previous appearance in a WTA main draw - at this very tournament last year, where she stunned top seed Marion Bartoli 6-4 6-4 in her first match since elbow-surgery!

Iroda: "It wasn't that easy. She has a hard serve, but I'm playing better and better."

------------
Second round
------------

- Iroda Tulyaganova [Q] lt. ANTONELLA SERRA ZANETTI [3], 6-4 2-6 6-1

Ironically the same opponent who beat Iroda in the second round here last year (6-4 6-2), this time Iri managed to detain her for 1h 50m.

www.asiantennis.com (http://www.asiantennis.com/): "The key to the match could well have been how the two players returned serve. Tulyaganova gave Serra Zanetti several free points, trying to overhit the Italian's slow-paced deliveries. Serra Zanetti, however, rarely missed a return. And with Tulyaganova far from her best serving form, she was constantly struggling."

Iroda: "The whole match depended on how I played. She didn't do much. I was making all the mistakes."

Antonella: "She's very aggressive. When she's hitting winners, she's very dangerous. But she was making a lot of mistakes today. I played my game, making every ball. I also tried to move her around because she wasn't moving too well."

Iroda at her best is an amazing athlete, and has a powerful serve. Unfortunately she hasn't been the same player since her elbow-surgery.

Some old photos of Iroda (because there aren't any new ones):

FED CUP http://www.fedcup.com/ (http://www.fedcup.com/)
=======-------------------------------
Asia/Oceania Zone Group I: Round robin (Olympic Park, Seoul, Korea; outdoor hard)
--------------------------------------

Pool A:
1. Australia (won 2 ties, lost 0)
2. Korea (won 1, lost 1)
3. Uzbekistan (won 0, lost 2)

UZBEKISTAN lt. KOREA, 0:2 (Thursday 20th April)
- Iroda Tulyaganova lt. Chang,Kyung-Mi, 0-6 3-6
- Akgul Amanmuradova lt. Yoo,Mi, 6-7 (7/9) 3-6
* Tulyaganova/Amanmuradova v Kim,Mi-Ok/Kim,So-Jung not played

This tie was rained off on Wednesday, and was Iroda's first match of 2006. It's great to see that she's finally playing again since October 2005, even though it's worse than amateur to lose by that score to a player ranked #546, whom Iroda had beaten 6-3 6-1 at the Tokyo Princess Cup 2000.

UZBEKISTAN lt. AUSTRALIA, 0:2 (Thursday 20th April)
- Iroda Tulyaganova lt. Nicole Pratt, 4-6 4-6
- Akgul Amanmuradova lt. Samantha Stosur, 4-6 2-6
* Tulyaganova/Amanmuradova v Stosur/Rennae Stubbs not played

It's too bad Jelena Dokic isn't playing for Australia, because an Iroda v Jelena match would have been mouthwatering - and quite possibly competitive on recent form! :o Jelena and Iroda are ranked #446 and #447 - their third week of being back-to-back in the rankings, as though they were magnetised together by my vow of eternal fanship!

At least Iroda was fit enough to get through two matches in the same day, and not get thrashed terribly by a player ranked 311 places above her - that is very positive. The Pratt match was "dominated by long baseline rallies", and the players had to wear jumpers as it was 2°C with an icy wind.

----------------------------------------------
Asia/Oceania Zone Group I: Relegation play-off
----------------------------------------------

UZBEKISTAN d. NEW ZEALAND, 2:1 (Saturday 22nd April)
+ Iroda Tulyaganova d. Leanne Baker, 6-3 7-5
- Akgul Amanmuradova lt. Marina Erakovic, 5-7 1-6
+ Tulyaganova/Amanmuradova d. Baker/Erakovic, 6-4 7-5

I couldn't be happier with the way these rubbers went, with a win for beautiful Marina Erakovic over the manly Amanmuradova as well as sweet Iroda's first win of 2006.

New Zealand are relegated to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II for 2007.
Uzbekistan remain in Group I.

Iroda is committed to ITF Saint Gaudens (http://www.itftennis.com/womens/tournaments/tournamentoverview.asp?tournament=1100013432) (week of 15th May). I hope she does play that tournament, because Jelena Dokic (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/dokic/) is committed too! :hearts:

The French Open commitments are out. Iroda and Jelena aren't in them. :(

Quarter-final
-------------

- Iroda Tulyaganova [Q] lt. Sanja Ancic, 7-6 (7/5) 6-0

A disappointing loss, but the four excellent wins with which Iroda qualified and reached the quarter-finals more than make up for that!

Sanja's brother Mario was the last man to beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon, so perhaps she has inherited some of the same talent. Sanja is 17 now, and was a top-ten junior last year. She also won the Luxilon Cup 2006 - the girls' singles event at Miami.

Iroda's next committed tournament is ITF Galatina (http://www.itftennis.com/womens/tournaments/tournamentoverview.asp?tournament=1100013575) next week, where she's listed for the qualifying - but her name doesn't appear in the qualifying-draw (http://www.tenniseurope.org/ProfessionalTennis/2006/WomenResMay.aspx). I do hope she hasn't injured herself again. However, she has a wild card for the main draw according to http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=237348 (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=237348)

+ IRODA TULYAGANOVA [7] d. CHAN,YUNG-JAN [1], 5-7 6-2 7-5

With this victory, Iroda has booked her main-draw wild card for the Australian Open 2007 (actually she probably only had to reach the final, as Chan,Yung-Jan is likely not to need a wild card).

If Iroda is healthy in January, it will be her first Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon 2003!

I wrote the following words for those who don't know Iroda, but I might as well post them here too. She was ranked as high as #16 in the world in June 2002. She first caught my eye as being extremely sexy, teaching me the meaning of the word "voluptuous"! :hearts:

But I soon realised that Iroda was also a powerful, exciting, versatile tennis-player, with a big serve, a searing two-handed backhand and amazing athleticism. I inducted her into my Eternal Fanship on 7th January 2002 (her 20th birthday).

Sadly, Iroda's career has been blighted by numerous injuries, including one to her right elbow that required surgery, and kept her off court from July 2003 to October 2004.

Iri has since been grinding it out on the ITF Women's Circuit without winning a title (she won three WTA Tour singles-titles in 2000/2001), and with numerous withdrawals and long periods of inactivity due to injury (she has played only four tournaments this year, excluding Fed Cup and the Asian Championships).

The WTA Tour would be that much richer if Iroda were once more a regular participant, along with Monica Seles and Jelena Dokic.

Iroda is in the Qualifying draw at Kolkata and playing her 1st tour event outside of Tashkent since Dubai 2005.

She plays Vakaria in the 1st Roudn which should be comfortably. Then probably Gumulya who won a match at Bali, but should still be beaten :)

I thought Iri fans might like to read this article - its very sad but at least Iroda wants to return to the top ;)

Article: Unlucky Iroda rues lost years

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kolkata, September 16: Few players on the WTA Tour would be as unlucky as Iroda Tulyaganova. In 2002, then as a 20-year-old, the Uzbek girl was enjoying her career-best singles ranking of 16. She also won gold in the Busan Asian Games that year. Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Anastasia Myskina, Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina, Jelena Dokic — she’s had career wins over them all.

However, an injury to her right elbow forced Iroda out of the circuit for three years starting 2003. The Uzbek who is now on a comeback trial, says fate couldn’t have been more cruel to her. “It feels very sad. I too could have been where these girls are now. I was playing some of my best tennis when the elbow injury meant I couldn’t compete for three years. I went through a very hard time. On the financial front too, life was tough. But I guess life’s like that,” Iroda told The Indian Express minutes after her first round qualifying win over Indian Meghha Vakaria for the loss of a single game.

The former junior Wimbledon champion though says those years spent away from the court taught her to look at life from a different perspective. “Now I’m a lot more relaxed. I don’t kill myself if I lose a match. I enjoy my tennis a lot more these days,” she said.

Though the Uzbek is currently ranked 346, she sent out a warning to her colleagues on the Tour. “I’ve always been a winner in my life. And, I’m making a comeback not to linger around the Top-100, but to even better my highest ranking of 16. I do see myself ranked within the Top-10 in the world in the future. For the moment though, I’ll be happy if I can finish this season inside the Top-200,” she said.

The Sunfeast Open may be only her sixth tournament in her comeback year, but she has already made the year count. Iroda won the Asian Championships in Tashkent last week and has got herself a wild card for next season’s first Grand Slam — the Australian Open.

Iroda may be trying to pull her game together, but she says she needs a coach to help her realise her dream. At the moment she can’t afford a coach, but she says she’s applied to the Federation for help.

So how different is she finding the Tour now? “Well, it was more friendly when I was playing. Now, it’s just competitive,” she said

Iroda has a had a tough few years

Asian champion, Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, who won the continental title hardly a week ago, had to use the qualifying route to get into the elite round of the WTA tier III tournament. She blew out the challenge of Indonesian Sandy Gumulya in straight sets to move into the main draw and that's where she would be looking reinvent her form that took her to the top-20 of world rankings in 2002.

...Just when things were looking good her right arm elbow began to complain. "I was playing the best tennis of my life. But I think I overdid it. My bone gave way. It broke under stress and took me three years to rehabilitate," she said after securing a main draw berth here on Sunday.

"I too could have been where these girls are now. I was playing on top of my form when the elbow injury took me out of competition for three years,'' she said. ``I went through a hard time - both mentally and financially. But, I guess life's like that," s[he] added. Tulyaganova had made headlines winning the junior Wimbledon title in 1999. ..."I have always been a winner in my life. Now that I have another chance, I will try move higher than my last best ranking (that of 16th) in the WTA,'' Tulyaganova said. "Frankly, I see myself ranked within the top-10 in the world in future. For the moment I will be happy if I can finish this season inside the Top-200," she added

Uzbekistan's qualifier Tulyaganova, who four years ago ranked as high as No.16 in the world, defeated Casey Dellacqua, 63 62.

"I'm so happy to be back and playing," said Tulyaganova, who plays her first Tour event this season and was sidelined the last two years with a right elbow injury. "I love being out here and winning. The surface here (Greenset indoors) is really good for me."
