Following New Delhi, Iroda is listed to play the 25K ITF event in Noida. She's currently on the qualies but will move into the MD once a few players start to withdraw :)

I think she made the Delhi MD :) The entries list doesn’t currently confirm it, but the Q-draw has Uberoi as #1 seed, and she was 2 places behind Iroda.

Q vs. Q
Ivana Lisjak CRO vs. Ankita Bhambri IND [WC]

That's a pretty tough opening round match! Yanina has had some decent wins this year and also won a few ITF's late last year.
Good luck Iroda :yeah:

Just found this article on Iroda, good read, sad in a way as Iroda mentions her elbow injury and how she knows she's not playing good tennis at the moment. Anyway I'll post the article -

Iroda’s crawl back to the top

New Delhi, March 11 A place in the top 20, a gold medal at the 2002 Asian Games, and that unbeatable winning feeling — Uzbekistan’s Iroda Tulyaganova seemed to be on her way to achieving it all. Yet today, she is slugging it out in the little league, miles removed from the glory she had once made her own. She lost in the first round of the $50,000 ITF Women’s Circuit tournament here today, and smiles wryly in recollection of the past. “I had to have an elbow operation that put me out for three years. It was really hard, especially mentally, to come back. But I told myself I have to forget whatever I had achieved earlier. I had to start from scratch,” says Iroda, speaking to Sportline.

Deceiving memory is not the easiest thing in the world, especially when the entire situation could have been prevented. “I had played too much tennis, my bone was crushed. I was feeling pain, but I did not stop; rather, I was not allowed to. My dad was pushing me to play. If he hadn’t, things would’ve been different now,” she continues. “I had played so much tennis that in the beginning of my layoff, I was happy to get some time away. I could spend time with my mother and sister. But then, I began watching tennis on TV, and after seeing top players like Kim Clijsters and Anastasia Myskina, who I have beaten, I wanted to get back to playing,” she adds.

Iroda has rubbed shoulders with tennis’ elite, and even partnered a legend. She played doubles with Martina Navratilova at the 2002 US Open, and admits the veteran is an inspiration as Iroda attempts to find her way back to the top. “She thought I’m very talented and could help me. Even though I had played quite a lot by that time, I felt like a kid in front of her. She is a very nice person and it was good to play with her,” smiles Iroda.

A semi-finalist at the 2006 Sunfeast Open in Kolkata, the 26-year-old had lost in the qualifying rounds of last week’s Bangalore Open. She now plans to add more tournaments to her calendar in search of a higher ranking than her current 307. “I will be playing more 50ks and 25ks on the circuit. It is hard because I’m not playing my best right now, and sometimes I feel like breaking my racket, screaming, crying; but I know I can’t do that if I want to play better,” she says.

31 Mar to 06 Apr 2008

Iroda is listed as an MDO at the $75,000 event in Torhout, she's currently 68th on the alt list so I dont think she'll play that event.
Her second priority is the $25,000 event in Hamburg, she's 9th on the alt list so I think Iroda may play in Hamburg that week

Hi Alex,
I started cheering for Iroda in 2005, I remember watching her on TV playing the Hopman Cup and really liked her game. Then at the AO later that month, she played against Molik and Davenport so they televised some parts of her matches again. Since then it has been a roller coaster ride for Iroda and her fans, injuries and fitness haven't treated her well.
How about you, when did you become an Iri fan?

Yes, Fed Cup is coming up but the players could play up to two weeks ahead of this (tournaments the week of April 7, and 14).

Question: why is the Iroda thread in Russian Roulette and Akgul's thread is in Asian Assualt?

Iroda has a thread in Asian Assault (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=58753) too.

Here's a photo I found in Slovenský Tenis (http://www.stz.sk/) magazine (April 2008), which previews the forthcoming Uzbekistan v Slovakia Fed Cup tie of 26th/27th April:

I've seen a cropped version of this photo before (it is from Pattaya 2008), but this one shows a bit of leg too.

Yep, she’s amazing, Alex. You hear the same story from everyone and anyone who’s ever met Iroda. She really does have the charm to match the looks – sufficient to have become the biggest WTA star ever, and on route stealing Maria’s and Ana’s endorsements combined. Instead fate intervened, ruining her ranking and chance at the limelight, and the reality is, even some members on this tennis forum, don’t know who she is.

I’ve followed Iroda since Linz 2001. I saw a Linz trailer on EuroSport, where they flashed up a glimpse of Iroda. I didn’t know who she was, but I was like: ‘how the fuck does that girl play tennis with boobs that big?!?!’ I was convinced EuroSport had photoshopped her boobs to make them bigger. Anyway, I didn’t plan to, but found myself watching the Linz semi. I sat down to watch because it was Dokic, who was looking as good as she’s ever looked, stunning. But then I saw the Goddess the other side of the net, looking even better than Jelena, and my jaw hit the floor! Little could I have imagined, that only weeks later, I’d be swapping flirty messages with this stunning Goddess, on her websites guestbook. That’s when I discovered she had the personality to match the looks.

Ask Goldylox. She started this thread, when there was already an existing thread in AA (she’s got too much time on her hands...). As there’s 10 times as many people browsing RR vs AA, this thread attracted a few more posts, and therefore got preference over the AA thread. But yes, there should be only one thread, and in AA.

Well happy with Iroda’s scoreline :D Very competitive :D Cibulkova reached the final of a tier 2 (clay) recently, taking out Chakvetadze, and tie-breaking Sharpie in the final.

Akgul needed to win her match, if UZB were to stand a chance of winning, hers being the easiest match on paper, but Rybarikova has won $25k and $50 titles this month, so no push over. Prayer mats out

Yep, commitments are one thing, playing is another  This is what I could find:

12-18 May:
1st pr, ITF $50k Saint-Gaudens, FRA, 2nd alt.
2nd pr, ITF $25k Caserta, ITA, 16th-Q

19-25 May:
1st pr, ITF $25k Moscow, RUS, 20th-Q
1st pr, WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg, FRA, Tier 3, 85th alt.
2nd pr, WTA Istanbul Cup, TUR, Tier 3, 68th alt.

9-15 June:
WTA Torneo Barcelona, ESP, Tier 4, 95th alt.

Deadline for Wimbledon qualies is 2 weeks away, with Iroda 50+ points short of making the cut. 35 points up for grabs at Saint-Gaudens, but will be too little too late, so Iroda’s only Wimby prospect is a WC.

Iroda’s Cibulkova match comments:

Ms. Iroda Tulaganova: "I am satisfied with my performance after long break in spite of thrashing. Dominika was little bit nervous from beginning, what is understandable because of home environment and the position of number one. I was trying to forcing my game to not allow an opponent to play her style of play - I knew it was my only chance. I am sorry I did not use the setball, but I still think that Ms. Cibulkova would not give up her play. It is hard to say if I would be enough to play the 3rd set. It is the truth I felt very tired on the end of the second one. Even in the unfavorable situation 0:2 it is till valid that we have nothing to lose and we will fight until the end."

Thanks for finding out that info Mike! Hopefully Iroda actually stays committed to some of those events.

But at least she's playing. Come on Iroda. Get a win next week.

On a different topic than tennis, I don't know if it will interest anybody but I remember to have read a long time ago an interview of Iroda where she was saying her sister was a singer. And I have found this video of Nargiza Tulyaganova on youtube. Nargiza is indeed the first name of Iroda's sister. So I'm 99% sure this girl is Iroda little sister.
Maybe someone can confirm?

Hi Tom. Yes, it is Iroda's little sis! Most of us have seen that before, but no harm in seeing it again  An exceptionally talented, beautiful and sexy lady, just like her big sis. If you’re wondering about the spelling ‘To'laganova’, it’s the Latin/Uzbek interpretation, apparently.

One of the things Iroda told us, when she used to post on her old guest-book, was that she didn’t like ‘going to the disco’ or ‘dancing’, (can’t remember her exact words). That was a downer for me, because I’m very partial to ladies who can sing and dance (podium dancers especially :drool: ). So I had to mark Iroda down from a perfect 10, for that, but then along comes her sis, and WOW!:drool: Are you allowed 2 wives under Uzbek law??

Thanks a lot for your answer Mike. Well I wasn't sure if this was a well-known video so that's why I decide to post it here. Yes I wasn't sure mainly because of the spelling but Uzbeks have changed their alphabet form cyrillic to latin quite recently, so that's probably why names can have different spellings.
And yeah Nargiza is very sexy. Iroda would probably win the poll: "which WTA players has the hotest sister?" That belly dance was . Unfortunately (), I will have to disapoint you but poligamy is certainly illegal in Uzbekistan. Bad luck. You will have to choose one of them. :D

By the way, I guess you have already search for other uzbek pop stars. Most of these girls are very pretty (even if musically it's not really my taste). Personnaly my favorite is Feruza. She's :hearts: :hearts: and I like her songs.
I dream to go in Uzbekistan. You have certainly seen pictures. Samarkand, Bukhara: that's so beautiful. I know a few people who have been there and they all fall in love whith the place.

So let's go Iroda. Go back to top 100, you can do it girl. We are all sure of that. But good luck also to Akgul :worship:, Vlada :lick:, Dilyara ;), Alexandra and Albina :). Good luck also to promising Alisa Ogorodova.

Well spotted. The WTA haven’t updated Bratchikova’s profile with that result yet, that’s how I missed it.

Just found this article -
Tennis' Unforgettable One-Hit Wonders

Here is an extract mentioning Iroda -
Three names worth mentioning are Andrea Temesvari (hint, she is Hungarian), Iva Majoli, who won a Slam and pulled a quick disappearing act, and Iroda Tulyaganova, who had one terrific 12-month period during which she won three titles and reached top 30, only to struggle even being in the top 100 the rest of career. Perhaps, the latter is more of a one-year wonder.

To me this article doesn't make that much sense considering Iroda stayed in the top 100 for at least 3 or 4 years whilst she was playing in tournament on a regular basis.

Mert mailed back, after I left a reply. He is an Iroda fan. He didn’t mean to imply they were quitters. He claimed to know about Iroda’s injuries, but reckons Iroda’s injuries ‘come with the territory’. I think not. They’ve been far far worse than your average top pro can expect to come with the territory. I’m sure that’s been the case with many of the players he mentioned. If he’d researched further, he would of no doubt of found some heart breaking stories, which deserve to be told in full.

For months she was entering multiple tourneys per week, but withdrew from all. I was guessing she was expecting to recover from whatever she was suffering from, but couldn’t predict when. She was eager to compete, so entered all those tourneys to make sure she had a full schedule, the second she recovered. So I found reason to be optimistic, but the last month, nothing, no commitments. So yep, not looking good :scared: She’ll need a WC for Tashkent. That’s why we need someone in Iroda’s Facebook, so we have a clue what’s going on. So come on Ant, flash those pecs! Btw, don’t include your real email, if you don’t want unwanted ex’s finding you. They can search on your email.

Storms, I don’t know if you can look into getting a new style guest-book, because Iroda doesn’t realise you’re only allowed 4 lines, and it’s so frustrating for us not getting her full message, especially this one. I’ll post a message of support on there, and I hopefully everyone else will do the same.

Finally some news on Iroda!!
I agree with Mike on this, it isn't good news that Iroda is unsure whether she'll be able to make a comeback but at least she hasn't given up all together.
She has been able to come back from injuries before, let's hope she can do it again!

Was that via Facebook? I didn’t read that there (yep, I finally got accepted :bigclap:) She hasn’t spoken about her injury. Some STUNNING new off-court pics in there, but I’m not sure she wants those posted outside FB, so I won’t post those (no bikini pics ).

Iroda says she’s single, but: “peple im not sad that im single too be single is same times good no problems :):):) have funn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” <<< Not sure what she means by “funn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” :hehehe:

I think she might have some affiliation with Zenith Watches, where she’s described as ‘The Face of Zenith’ on their FB page.

So get along to FB, and request to be a friend. You stand every chance now that Iroda’s cleared her backlog of friend’s requests. Check out those new pics, and Iroda’s in there chatting most days, along with Akgul.

I have just updated Iroda's biography on my website:
http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/tulya/biography.html

It is not a copy of Iroda's standard WTA Tour biography, but my own detailed appreciation of her game, followed by a review for every year of her career. I have edited the introduction, and added a review of 2008.

I have also replaced the term "Grand Slam" with "Major" when referring to the four Major tournaments individually. It is my New Year's Resolution to reserve the term "Grand Slam" for the winning of all four Majors.

I wish Iroda and all her fans a happy new year, and Iroda a slightly belated (assuming she's in Tashkent, which is on GMT+5h) happy birthday for 7th January.

Howdee, rucolo! :yeah:

Iroda hasn’t competed for 9 months, due to lower back and left wrist injuries  Her official site hasn’t been updated for years. Best place to catch her is Facebook, but she gives nothing away, regarding her comeback status. I check the ITF commitments regularly, but nothing on the horizon.

Yes, its about time her official website gets updated. The official site was never great with updates/news. The guy running it seemed more interested in making money out of fans, and then he started ripping us off, with photo DVD’s that never arrived. So good riddance.

I remembered a guestbook where Iroda sometimes posted. Iroda posted on her official guest-book (long since gone) and at James' site: http://www.geocities.com/smandy0/

16yr-old Iroda didn’t make it past qualies in singles, but made the dubs final with Petra:

Partnering Petra RAMPRE (SLO)
16 W KALVARIA (USA) / STEVENSON (USA) 7-5 6-4
QF W HROZENSKA (SVK) / KRSTULOVIC (CRO) 6-2 6-4
SF W BASTERNAKOVA (SVK) / HANTUCHOVA (SVK) 6-4 7-6
FR L DYRBERG (DEN) / KOSTANIC (CRO) 2-6 6-7

Match stats: http://tinyurl.com/mrmcvd

Didn’t get to see the match, but I think all things considered, it was a mighty fine effort. Their opposition have singles/dubs ranks of 106/122 and 170/236, compared to Albina’s 567/411 and Iroda’s 16 months of no competition. Nothing to be ashamed of and everything to be proud of (except maybe that 2nd set :tape: ).

Fantastic having Iroda back competing today :bigclap: Hope she decides to make it a full time comeback, although I can’t see her listed for up coming satellites/challengers.

As I suspected Iroda withdrew from Albuquerque. Not too surprised through, seemed a bit strange for her comeback to begin in America rather than Asia / Europe.

I guess if she is entering events again she must be somewhat committed. Maybe Tashkent is next

I think Iroda is just postponing her comeback, until she’s 100% ready. If she wasn’t still planning a comeback, why withdraw from each of the following, on each withdraw deadline, on a weekly basis, instead of withdrawing from them all at once?

$25 Redding, CA, 13th Sep – withdrew 27th Aug
$75 Albuquerque, NM, 20th Sep – withdrew 02nd Sep
$50 Las Vegas, NV, 27th Sep – withdrew 11th Sep
$10 Williamsburg, VA, 04th Oct (http://www.itftennis.com/womens/tournaments/tournamentacceptancelist.asp?tournament=1100022882&event=&order=Position) – withdraw deadline 21st Sep

Can't wait! :bounce:

No idea, I'm sure if she had wanted to play Tashkent she could get a WC easily. I'm still surprised to see her starting back with an American tournament though...maybe she wants to come back through her own tennis and not with the help of a wildcard. Also, playing Tashkent as a come back tourney would have put a lot of pressure on her to do well...in US, she can just play without all the home expectation.

Yeah, I can't wait either!! :yeah:

 I really don't know what to say! We've all been waiting in anticipation for weeks about Iroda's comeback and she retires in her first singles match back.

She could have possibly had a niggling injury going into the event, after all she did withdraw from three prior ITFs but to me that doesn't make any sense. Why would she wait so long to play again if she was injured! Maybe she realised Nabieva was playing and wanted to play dubs with the young Uzbek. Anyway I'm just throwing around possible theories.

Anyone know if Iroda has committed to any further events?

Well Iroda appears chipper enough on Facebook, but no mention of why she had to retire from her match, or what she has planned next. Posted only an hour or two after her 1R singles, thanking someone for their comments:

IT: thank u very much :)

Someone organized some flowers with a welcome back/good luck message, on our behalf, that was delivered to Iroda at Williamsburg, which was signed: ‘From All Your Fans Worldwide’. Posted earlier today:

IT: Want to say very Big Thank u too my fans that send me the Flawers to the tournament in Willamsburg VA, was very nice and it was one of the good moment of the tournament :):):) THank u very very much!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to the someone who organised the flowers ;) Iroda’s sounding upbeat!

You could well be right with the Nabieva theory. She was either not up to speed to fulfill her commitments at the tournies she withdrew from, or she was maybe injured. Maybe these tournies were a suck-it-and-see experiment, and the injuries have won, and that’s why there’s no more commitments, at least not for the next few weeks

Anyone know if Iroda has committed to any further events?

Indeed, Iroda is probably the most attractive woman over 29 in the world now.

With virtually no knowledge of Russian beyond its similarity to Slovak, I didn't understand much of the video – just caught a few words like “карьера [career]”, “Туляганова”, “Ку́рникова”, “Grand Slam” and “на суде [on court]”).

Mike_T
Jul 14th, 2011, 08:00 AM
A very big THANKS to Mr. Brightside for the translation :worship:

She's talking about how she retired because she had an injury on her right something (you probably know what it is, i dont know what body part is the word she said), how she tried to come back but her body couldnt handle the professional level of athleticism or whatever and how she got more injuries and doctors adviced her too to retire from the pro tour. Right elbow

She's talking about how she really wants to raise a star, and how she's training this one 15 year old Uzbekistan girl who she really hopes will be good. She also wants to have a group of young kids who she hopes can become really good too (better than her, she says ). She's been in the US for the last 9 months training the aforementioned girl, but now she's back at home. Pretty sure that’s Natella Nabieva (http://www.itftennis.com/juniors/players/activity.asp?player=100116434). A student at Bollettieri ‘s and playing Tashkent this week. :)

She doesn't have a tennis school anymore cause it didn't work out, now it's just a tennis club where anyone can play... she says her dream is to open her own school in Tashkent, and then hopefully spread all around the country, because she really wants these kids to have the opportunity to play the game... but it depends on her financial ability to do such a big project, she said she wants to make it as affordable as she can for the youngsters, in her school at samarkand she even had some kids from orphanages practice completely free :) then she's talking about the girl she's training again, her titles and stuff, I wondered about the school. Crying shame it didn’t work out.

then she's asked if she's a strict coach and she saysshe's really lenient until they make her mad  then she's asked if she has a lot of demand for coaching, she says a lot of people dont want her because of her price, but she says that she indeed asks more than other coaches but people dont realize that she's a full time coach now and a former top 20 player and that she's got a lot to share... And the best looking coach ever. $500ph minimum :worship:

then shes asked if she saw potential in a player to be #1, would sbe sponsor them? she says she doesnt have that much money, but she would definitely help in the beginning and then use all her connections to get her a sponsor, because she knows how hard it is for a middle class faimly to afford making someone a tennis player, and she says she was also born in a middle class family and had it not been for one very kind sponsor, her family probably wouldnt have afforded her becoming a tennis player. $150,000 to train in Germany, and Iroda paid it all back, at least that was her intention before her career got derailed by injury.

then she's saying how everything (talent, money, determination, coach) has to click to become a pro player, one of them isn't enough... then she says how its the fate of very few individuals to win grand slams, and there's no such thing as lucky when winning GS. Luck = hard work and determination (she rephrasing a common phrase in eastern europe; the harder i work, the luckier i get). then she says that even though she was #16 and people think she's arrogant, she's really not, because her upbringing is such that she's nice to all people and she really tries not to be arrogant, and she hates when people judge her when they haven't even talked to her, she says that she may have been arrogant when she was young, but it didnt last long because she has a very strict father Arrogant is the last word I’d use to describe Iroda. Never less than modest and unpretentious, on or off the tennis court.

then she's talking about all the gossip people spread about her, such as her being related to the mayor of Tashkent and some other things that make her laugh. then she talks about how she's still friends with anna k after they played doubles, she met up with anna's mom when she was in the US, but she couldn't see Anna but they did talk on the phone and they usually do, but Anna changes numbers very often cause of the paparazzi and enrique and stuff she also said she's met enrique cause they were playing doubles in asia when they first started dating so Enrique flew to their matches and then she just talks about anna and how she likes her as a person and how they both respect eachother.
thats about it I need to stop being rude about AK, but it should have been Iroda picking up all those big endorsements., not Ana. Iroda talks about Luck = hard work and determination, but you have to be blessed with a degree of good luck to remain sufficiently injury free to be physically able to put the hard work in. Iroda’s bad luck outweighed the good luck too often, and it had nothing to do with lack of hard work or determination.

Why is this thread in Russian Roulette haha? On a side note I was wondering what happend to her and this video cleared it up, I never realized she had an elbow injury. I always felt that she could have possibly been a top 10 player if she had some better fortune with the injuries, I loved watching her play and had hopes that she would make a comeback but I guess this video shot down that idea.

Well I guess we all saw this coming but it's still sad to know Iroda's career is offically over.
She has to be commended for continually trying to give her tennis career another crack even with all those niggling injuries she had.
If she had won her R1 match at the AO in 2007 she would have broken into the top 100 again and who knows what could have happened after. I guess it wasn't meant to be.
The two times I met her (AO 2007 & 2008) she was so friendly and always had time to sign a few autographs and have a few pictures with fans. I still remember in 2008 she happily agreed when I asked for a photo even though it was raining and my friend didn't know how to use my camera, we made her wait for a few minutes
All the best to Iroda in her post professional tennis career!! :yeah:

Until Iroda utters the ‘R’ word (she hasn’t as yet, afaik), I’ll continue to hope against hope, especially as one 40 something player, is still giving the top players a hard time. I’m sure Iroda is appreciated as much by her new students, as she is by her old fans.
