Hana has been struggling all year and with a win-loss record of 4-13, she wont be full of confidence. Hana def Kelly Liggan (247) in the 1st round 64 46 62
Good chance for Iroda to make the 3rd round of Qualies.

Iroda is playing in the QD of the tier 4 Palermo.
She has drawn 20 y.o. Romanian Agnes Szatmari.
Szatmari is ranked 253 and her best result of the year was reaching a final of a 25K event. Other then that, her year hasn't been that impressive.
GL Iroda :yeah:
She is the 2nd match on court 2 (1st match begins at 3pm local time)

Wimby 1R Qualies. Is that a heat pad on her lower back? That might go someway to explaining her recent form.

There’s no denying it, Iroda’s looking heavier and not as fit. I think those lower back heat pads offer a clue. No doubt it’s been her back again that’s stopped her training and practising – all contributing to her lack of form.

"Hello every one:) im finaly back but didnt play alot this sison beckause i had problems with my lover back that is why i retaired from the match in miami ferst round, but now im filling better just have to get more matches to get my ranking back:) I will..."

Message left at James Storms guest-book: http://us.geocities.yahoo.com/gb/view?member=smandy0 Unfortunately, unbeknown to the message poster, that guest-book cuts short messages that are longer than a few lines. That’s why Iroda’s message stops mid sentence.

Iroda’s sister Nargiza: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=--xwn5nAuQQ :music: :rocker:

Loving it! Nargiza is set to be a star! How do I know it’s Iroda’s sister? Well two women that attractive and that talented, surely must share the same genes, right? We’ve only seen Iroda’s sister a few times, mostly when she was much younger, but for me there’s a strong resemblance. Also, on the youtube comments (page 2), someone claims it's her. I don’t understand the surname spelling, but I’ve seen Iroda’s name spelt the same before – maybe it’s a Russian interpretation.

"Nargiza To'laganova"?
I believe that's written in Uzbek using the Latin alphabet. The Uzbek for "Uzbek" is "O'zbek", so...

"ona sestryonka Irodi Tulyaganovoy"?
Here, "Iroda Tulyaganova" is written with genitive case-endings ("she [is] the little sister of Iroda Tulyaganova").

Either that Andrew, or the sisters saw my ( . Y . ) signature, and in disgust changed their name by deed-poll, to get rid of the ‘y’ :o

Yes Dom, another 1-6 set, but she didn’t give up! WELL DONE IRODA!! 2R Sanchez, at 24, has a career high ranking of 168, mostly down to two $25k hard-court victories this month. First $25k doesn’t really count, with a QF retirement and walk-over final. Second $25k was legit, but highest ranked player she faced was 210. Sanchez def. Iroda 64 63

First set was a battle of the serves, with only one break to Sanchez. At 5-4, with Sanchez serving for the set Iroda saved 4 or 5 SPs and even had a BP.
Iroda started off poorly in the second set, going down 0-2. However, she reeled off 3 straight games to lead 3-2, only to lose the last 4 games of the match

Im guessing Iroda will be playing the Asian Champs which are soon but I guess we'll only know when the draw comes out

Oh, I do remember wondering why the SB wasn't updating for about 10 mins at 2-2 30-0. I did think Iroda would the one taking a medical timeout.
I guess the positive thing is Sanchez qualified so she must be playing some good tennis.

Final report: “TASHKENT: Home favourite Iroda Tulyaganova proved too hot for Tara Iyer as the former World No.16 cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the women’s final of the Asian tennis championship here on Saturday. Thus, the 25-year-old Uzbek captured a wild card for the 2008 Australian Open. Tulyaganova faced only one break point, in the second game of the first set. She came out of troublewith one of her seven aces. Meanwhile, it was a double delight for Uzbekistan as the top-seeded Denis Istomin won the men’s title beating Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-2, 6-4. Hence, Uzbekistan bagged both the Australian Open wild cards at stake.” From: http://www.hindu.com/2007/09/09/stories/2007090957001700.htm

Asian Champs, Tashkent:

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/3822/irodafs6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
From http://asiantennis.com/index.htm

Tara Iyer’s perspective on the final:

“NEW DELHI: Tara Iyer was quite pleased to make the final of the Asian tennis championship at Tashkent, but conceded that she was disappointed about not being able to fight better against the former World No.16, Iroda Tulyaganova, in the title clash.“I had watched her in a couple of matches before the final. She did not look extraordinary or anything special. In the final, she played a new level. It was an onslaught of huge ground stokes on both flanks and big serves. Maybe, she had saved her best for the final,” said the 19-year-old Tara in a chat with The Hindu, as she looked back at the final in which she could win only four games. There was indeed a lot at stake, as the winner would get a wild card for the Aus tralian Open, but Tara said that she focused on each point during the match, without cluttering her mind with unnecessary thoughts.Trying too hard Tara, who had recently won three singles titles on the trot in the ITF $10,000 circuit, admitted that she tried too hard in the final and ended up making too many errors.“I went to the tournament without any expectations. I was happy to reach the singles final and the doubles semifinals. I was happy that I could compete hard despite not being at my best physically,” said Tara.” http://www.hindu.com/2007/09/11/stories/2007091154101800.htm

Iroda def. Alina Jidkova (RUS) 57 64 62 :woohoo: :yeah:
After losing the first set, I honestly didn't think Iroda would win the match but she did :D

I followed scores for the majority of the match -
Iroda broke in the opening game of the match and then held quite easily, including serving an ace on her very first service point. After Iroda led 2-0, Jidkova reeled off 3 straight games. After another service game held by both, Iroda broke again for 4-3 but was broken straight back. Again, both players held serve, inculding Iroda having to save 2 SPs at 4-5, both on second serves! At that stage I thought Iroda would come back and win the set but she then lost 2 straight games and there went the opening set 7-5 for Jidkova.
I went to go have dinner and come back with Iroda leading 3-2, with a break. After another hold and break, Iroda went up 5-2, only to lose the next 2 games, including having 3 SPs at 5-3. At 5-4, with Iroda serving again for the set, she quickly went down 0-30 and I thought Iroda was gone, however after another long game, Iroda won the set on her 7th or 8th SP.
Third set began with Jidkova serving, she led 40-0 only for Iroda to break, she then held quite easy in the next game :) Jidkova held at 2-1, only for Iroda to reel off another 2 straight games and lead 4-1. After another 2 breaks of serve, Iroda served out the match :woohoo:

Next up Marina Erakovic, whom she has played twice, for one win a piece

Marina Erakovic def Iroda 64 63

I followed the scores again for the majority of the match, I guess the key factor was Iroda let slip a 4-1 lead in the opening set, she also had GPs at 4-2 but couldnt convert. After that the match turned in favour of Erakovic and Iroda's level of play must have dropped

I dont know if Iroda is playing next week but she would be playing Tashkent, which is the following week.

Thanks for the live-score comments, SB. :) She'll get better. Still getting over the after-effects of that back injury. More match play and better fitness and the results are sure to come. Going to lose a shed load of points this week though :(

Thanks to fisichella7019 for his China Open report and photos :D

Iroda at China Open (two qualifying matches report, etc)

Because she didn't play in Bali after losing in US Open Qualifying, I
could't make sure if Iroda would come to Beijing until Friday. So
when I saw her name on the draw, it was a big pleasant surprise.
On Saturday, I was looking for Iroda from forenoon, but only find her
first opponent Alina Jidkova came out to train. I didn't saw her
until the match was about to begin, when Iroda appeared with her
sister and coach (training partner/boyfriend ? -- I can't make sure)
I felt excited, this is the first time I saw her by my own eyes,
great feeling! And she looks very attractive and fit.
The match against Jidkova was very tough. Iroda should have won the
first set and won the match in straight sets -- I believe that's very
important for her considering her current physical condition. But she
looked a little tired and made some errors towards the end of first
set. I think Iroda is obviously stronger than Jidkova although the
latter was in great form recently. One thing worth to mention: the
two girls Iroda and Alina were all very active and talktive during
the match, but maybe they were murmuring and shouting in Russian or
other some language besides English, so I could't understand what did
they said, poor...

On Sunday, I easily found Iroda and her coach/partner on practice
court at noon, she wore a brilliant blue outfit and looked in good
form. During the match against Marina Erakovic, Iroda played well
enough to break her opponent firstly, but as the match went on, her
fitness began to slump and Erakovic began to focuse her first serve --
really powerful and hard to return. It looked Marina's serve was
more steady than Iroda's, I think it was the key difference of the
match.

After following the two matches, I think Iroda is on good form,
although maybe she hasn't found back groove. But she is playing not
solid enough from baseline and when she rush to the net, she can
hardly win a point. I think Iroda may need to play some small
tournament to get more ranking points easily, not always compete in
qualifying -- the "day by day by day" schedule is too tough for her
at the moment. The second, I believe Iroda need a more experienced
coach and a fitness trainer. But most important, I hope she will
always remain injury-free and enjoy playing tennis!

I will also upload some photos of Iroda and her accompanist, you can
check them there.

Iroda beat Poutchkova in Tashkent last year, 6-4 6-0. Iroda was then quoted as saying "One must lose with dignity" after Olga tanked the 2nd-set. The 20 y/o was 32 in the rankings, but she's suffered a serious reverse of form, losing her previous 12 matches! :tape: Her last win being 4 months ago. If Iroda wins, she'll meet Akgul in the 2R. I just knew I was tempting fate, mentioning Olga's loosing streak. Not entering the dubs, was maybe a clue, maybe Iroda wasn't 100% fit again.

I honestly didn't expect Iroda to lose this match
However, she done has her reasons, here is an article from the tournament website -

Iroda looks ahead with a smile

It was a tired and weary-looking Iroda Tulyaganova who stepped into the media room after her defeat to Olga Poutchkova in the Tashkent Open today. But she certainly wasn't despairing.
"I am not at all disappointed," said the 25-year-old Tulyaganova, after her 7-5, 6-3 loss to the seventh-seeded Russian. "I played badly today but that was because I could not play my game." Tulyaganova was the runner-up here last year and champion seven years ago.
"I have been ill and I have practiced only four days for this match, half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening," she continued. "I had no power, when I walked on to court, I wanted to get off, I was feeling very weak."
Clearly, Tulyaganova was nowhere near the player she can be in the 93-minute match against Poutchkova. There were flashes of the power and the craft which made her a top 20 player six years ago but it was not enough, even against an opponent who herself had problems, having lost 11 straight first-round matches before this one.
After injuries had hampered her earlier in the year -- she was forced to withdraw from her first-round match in the $3.4million Tier I Tour event in Miami -- Tulyaganova appeared to be getting into form when in early September. She had got a coach, Akopian George, and she went on to win the Asian Championships. It seemed a good omen; she had won the event last year also, which she followed with a good showing in Kolkata and then reaching the final here.
But it wasn't to be. She fell ill playing the qualifying rounds in the $600,000 Tier II event in Beijing in the third week of September. And that hampered her preparations for the Tashkent Open.
Crucially, the loss here and her not defending the points she won at Kolkata last year means Tulyaganova's ranking is going to drop considerably from the present 183.
So how does that affect her? How does she see the future, especially given the injury problems she's had over the years, the competition from the younger generation and the fact that she isn't getting any younger?
Tulyaganova brushed off the question with a smile. "I'm looking ahead to the future. I'm playing the Kremlin Cup in Moscow next week. I now have a coach which I didn't have before and I know if I can be injury free, I will not play badly.
"I'm going to come back to the top 50 soon."

Here is another quote from Iri -

Tulyaganova herself was not fully fit. "I've been ill since going to China (the $600,000 event at Beijing) and I've had only four days' practice," she said. She did show flashes of the game that made her No 16 in the world five years ago but she was too inconsistent.

The way Iroda faces up to all adversity, can only make you proud to be an Iroda fan, and also gives us complete confidence in her resolve to make it back to the top 50. All Iroda needs is a 12-month break from this health and fitness roller coaster. Give the girl a break, instead of giving it to a certain Belgium, who turns her back on a grand-slam final because of ‘bellyache’.

Sorry all you Iroda fans, but I am going to put a spanner into your dreams. I have been following her career for longer than most of you. I quote from my 2001 page:

• On 11.05, I emailed Iroda with some questions. One was a request to allow this to become her official web site. This was her reply on 17.05

"HI thank u very much for doing the web side for me hat is very nice of it so piupele can know more about me that is good so im in antwerpen at the moment and my new tournaments are Shtrasburg and Rolan Garros and u can call my web side how ever eseyr is goig to be for piupel to remember it and to fiend it so thank u very much sorry for my bad english writing and take care Iroda"

The chances of Iroda of returning to the “top 50 soon” are as far-fetched as the simile that I used on my 2007 page.

I would rather that she returns to a reasonable ranking where she does not have to qualify for tournaments. It is amazing how a healthy state of mind affects the body!

Based on her ability to stay injury free, you mean? Because based on her results when she is injury free, Iroda is more than capable of cracking the top 50, as she proved last year. Either way, your 'simile' smacks of sarcasm (or is it the way I'm reading it?), and is entirely inappropriate and disrespectful.

Is this sarcasm really about you not getting 'official' status for your site? Is that why you posted Iroda's reply? You seriously need to get over that Smandy.

Yes, that is exactly what I mean.

BTW, I gave up caring about site names a long time ago. It is fruitless to waste one's energy of such things. However, I still stand by what I said.

Take a look at the end of 2003 and all of 2004 and 2005.

2006 witnessed a wonderful rebound with some exceptions.

It must be difficult attempting to qualify knowing that you are not near 100% fit. It must feel worse when you know that you are capable of obtaining better results. In the latter, I can empathise.

I honestly hope that Iroda proves me incorrect.

Props for removing it. I'm sure Iroda is the last player to take fitness for granted, when making ranking predictions. Whatever frustrations us fans harbour over Iroda's injuries, we need to multiply that by a million to appreciate the level of frustration Iroda has personally suffered over 5 years, to get this far. So if she can remain positive, I think we can also.

Take a look at the end of 2003 and all of 2004 and 2005. Any dissapointing results then were due to the whole injury process - from playing with the injury, to surgery, rehabilitaion / fitness, revising stroke biomechanics (ooh err), also personal problems. No doubt we never got to hear half of what Iroda endured. So no need to question those years. Just be thankful the process was successful, in the end - the testament being her performance last year, when she was heading for the top 50, before back problems set in.

I honestly hope that Iroda proves me incorrect. Just don't expect a wedding present :p

I guess an expected lose for Iri but she seems to have played decent for one set. I was just looking at the OOP thread in the Moscow forum and found out Iroda had a BP at 4-4. I guess after that stage things went downhill.

A poster from WTAworld saw the match -
"The first set was tight but Osterloh played smarter, then Iroda dropped her level, at 0*-3 she took medical time-out (i guess it was tactical) but this thing didn't work and Lilia finished it winning"

Im guessing you're correct Mike, I think Iri may be playing a few ITFs to finish off the year, probably a smart move

Asian Hopman Cup: UZB vs JPN Result

I can’t believe Iroda’s match was shown live on EuroSport this morning! I had no idea, so missed it. I’ve been watching the WTA-YEC this week and didn’t notice any trailers for the Hopman coverage. Anyway, perhaps it’s best I didn’t see it, because those that did, reckon Iroda played poorly.

markdelaney: “I've just seen Iroda play for the first time in years (seen results but never actually watched a performance in this time). She lost 6-2 6-3 to Ayumi Morita and looked hopeless. If she couldn't win the point within 2 attempts at hitting the ball as hard as she could, she lost the point. Numerous double faults, balls landing metres out or not even reaching the net. What has happened to her?

All Morita had to do was get the ball back. She didn't hit any winners that I can recall, reminded me a bit of Tatiana Panova in style but was clearly outhit many times when Iroda managed to get the point right.

As for Iroda, she was completely one dimensional. If hitting the ball hard didn't work, she just hit it harder. Her second serves were being hit as hard and badly as the first serves. Her movement wasn't too bad but the tightness of her "outfit" didn't flatter her.(basically tiny red shorts and a tight short top)”

DankeAnke: “I saw the match between Iroda and Morita. And Iroda played bad. She still got the power, but she made too many unforced errors and was really slow on the court!”

Iroda was listed as an MDO for Deauville so she must have known she wasn't going to get into the MD with her ranking atm. Plus travelling from Asia to Europe to play more matches (in such a small period of time) may not have been the smartest option.

If Iroda w/d's from Poitiers than I may get worried :scared:

Found some more photos of Iroda on jiro's site, dont know how to upload them and cant be bothered learning either
I'm sure Mike will :D

First 2 games are missing, 56 minutes long. He's working on a DVD download.

One positive: She’s not as out-of-shape as some photos, and some people reporting on the match, would have us to believe. She’s a lot closer to her ideal fighting weight, compared to Wimbledon :)

she definitely looks more fit in the video..i think she just needs to continue..when she gets to full fitness she will get her movement back which was so big for her when she was top 20..she will definitely start to win matches.. i remember this time last year she was up there with Na Li..she has what it takes to be back in the top 20

Did you notice the colour of her racquet changed? I’m guessing it’s a different model. I think she was using a Drive Z Lite, and going by the colour, the new racquet is either an Aeropro Drive or Aeropro Drive + , the same Nadal uses. Apparently gives you slightly more power at the expense of control. That might explain the over-hitting last week :spit: http://www.babolat.com/

You need a download manager. Megashare isn’t straightforward. I didn’t pick Megashare, so don’t blame me  It would take some time to re-upload to a simpler host, so try this first:

The download manager I use:

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/

1. Open Megashares link.
2. Activate passport if necessary.
3. Drag link into drop box or copy link and add download.
4. Download proceeds to 250mb.
5. Download stops.
6. Reopen Megashares link.
7. Reactivate passport when it lets you.
8. Restart download.
9. If download complete, great, otherwise go to 4.

Second seed Kudryavtseva cruises into next round
By Alaric Gomes, Staff Reporter
Published: December 10, 2007, 23:21

Dubai: Second seed Alla Kudryavtseva got off to a winning start as the 9th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge got under way at the Al Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa on Monday.

The Russian matched Germany’s Angelika Roesch in the first set before stepping up the pressure to win 7-6 (3), 6-0 to enter the second round.

But much of the focus was on the tussle between Uzbekistan’s Iroda Tulyaganova and American Neha Uberoi with the Uzbek cruising through in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 after more than one and a half hour on court.

Uberoi, who was one of the three wild card entrants here, did not have the best of starts as Tulyaganova broke her early and then held serve for a 2-0 lead. But the American fought back holding her serve and then notched a break to level things at 2-2.

At this juncture, Uberoi’s serve deserted her and Tulyaganova snatched her chance for a break and held serve to go 5-3 ahead.

The second set was more evenly match with Uberoi fighting for every point as the players stayed tied 2-2. Tulyaganova got a crucial break in the fifth game to go 3-2 clear, after which she never looked back, breaking Uberoi once more to take set and match 6-2.

“She is an aggressive player, she is a fighter,” Tulyaganova said.

The two played each other in an event in Italy last year and the Uzbek girl had come out winner then too. “But that was on clay and I was a bit apprehensive,” Tulyaganova said.

Uberoi was disappointed with the result. “I was feeling good and thought I would play much better here,” Uberoi said.

“I think the difference between me and her was the serve. She served well and I did not,” Uberoi said.

The Uzbek girl’s best performance here was a quarterfinal in the singles in 1999. “I hope I can better my record this year,” she said.

A one-time top-20 player on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Tulyaganova has slipped down the rankings after a long lay-off of three years following an elbow surgery. “But it has been good now especially after I have started winning once again. I hope this tournament can give me a lot of confidence,” she said.

Action will continue today with top seed Maria Kirilenko expected to play wild card Aniko Kapros in their opening round match this afternoon.

(4)Bychkova/Rodina (RUS) d. Amanmuradova/Tulyaganova (UZB) 57 64 14-12

A poster (Nicola) saw this match and gave a little report -
I have watched some more tennis, a quite entertaining doubles between the Uzbek girls and Bychkova-Rodina. There were good rallies and the Uzbeks should have won but Tulyaganova missed a few crucial volleys and served two double faults when leading 8-7 in the match tie-break. Bychkova screams a lot on the court. Amanmuradova was the best player, I really like watching her. With better training she could be a top player. Some of her backhand returns reminded me of Safin's.

Here is an article about Iroda's QF match against Fedak -

Fedak to clash with Rodina in Al Habtoor Challenge semis
By Alaric Gomes, Staff Reporter
Published: December 13, 2007, 23:18

Dubai: Sixth seed Yuliana Fedak used all her guile to outgun wild card Iroda Tulyaganova 6-4, 6-3 and enter the semifinals of the 9th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa yesterday.

The 24-year-old Fedak was precise against an opponent whose game went on crumbling with time, will now face Evgeniya Rodina in today's first semifinals.

Rodina secured a hard-fought 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win against second seeded Alla Kudryatseva in a marathon quarterfinal lasting two hours and 40 minutes.

In the upper half of the draw, top seed and pre-tournament favourite Maria Kirilenko breezed through with her best display in this tournament so far with a clinical 6-2, 6-2 win over the fifth seeded Ekaterina Bychkova.

She will meet Marina Erakovic of New Zealand in the second semifinal to be played later this evening.

The first quarterfinal between Fedak and Tulyaganova was an engrossing affair with the smaller built girl from Ukraine using all her guile and court craft to better a better endowed opponent.

"I had to play better as I know she tends to be aggressive from the baseline," Fedak said after winning in 80 minutes on court. Fedak took the first set 6-4, only to stutter a bit in the second as Tulyaganova threatened a comeback on at least two occasions. But Fedak used her smooth shot-making to maximum advantage even as Tulyaganova saw her own game crumbling.

"It was frustrating to see that I lacked the power to give off my best," Tulyaganova said.

"I know I have the game, but what I lacked today was the fitness," she admitted. The Ukrainian, who will leave on Monday for Tashkent to start her preparations for next month's Australian Open, had her chances.

But she seemed to hesitate with her footwork while making the crucial shot.

"Maybe it was the tiredness of playing a tough match the previous night," Tulyaganova explained.

Fedak latched on this weakness instantly and broke her opponent in the third game to go 2-1 clear. But Tulyaganova came right back with a break to draw level 2-2, thanks a double fault from Fedak.

However, Fedak got herself focused, broke her opponent and then never looked behind to win the set and match 6-3.

"I knew she was tired from the previous night's match. I got a bit more confident when I saw she was not moving too well on court," Fedak smiled.

Today's action will start with the first semifinal between Fedak and Rodina at 4 pm, followed by the second semifinal between Kirilenko and Erakovic.

The singles matches will be followed by the doubles final.

Entrance is free.

I have just updated Iroda's biography on my website:
http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/tulya/biography.html

It is not a copy of Iroda's standard WTA Tour biography, but my own detailed appreciation of her game, followed by a review for every year of her career. I have edited the introduction, and added a review of 2007.

There has been some confusion in the IT community regarding the structure of the Eredivisie Proftennis (June 2007) and Iroda's results in it, but I think I've got the story straight for my biography.

I can confirm that I will be reporting on the Australian Open 2008. I have also vowed to follow the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics.

Here's a very nice Iroda-photo that you may not have seen before:

I don't think it's too late to wish Iroda and all her fans a happy new year.

The evening-sessions of the Australian Open will be televised on BBCi from 08:25 GMT each day of the tournament (digital viewers press Red or select the appropriate Freeview-channel: either 301 or 302 - today it was 301).

My understanding is that this coverage will consist of the women's match on the evening-session of the Rod Laver Arena (Kanepi v Molik on Monday), followed by the men's match, followed by recorded coverage of the "best" match of the day on a continuous loop.

But don't set your hopes too high - last year, only 7% of BBCi's Australian Open coverage was of the women! There isn't a women's match on the Rod Laver Arena evening-session every day.

Other Australian Open coverage on BBC television:
* Sunday 20th January on BBC 2 (12:30 to 14:00 GMT);
* Saturday 26th January: Women's Singles final on BBC 1 (from 02:20 GMT);

4. Iroda Tulyaganova preview
----------------------------
4.1 First round
---------------

I hoped that Sania Mirza would get to play a member of my Eternal Fanship here, so that I can follow more closely what could well be the final Grand Slam of her career.

Sania is being prosecuted for "dishonouring the Indian flag", after she sat with her feet up and over it at the recent Hopman Cup. She will stand trial on 10th March, and the likely outcome is three years' imprisonment. This is not the first time that Sania has "dishonoured the Indian flag", the photographic evidence is plastered all over the Internet, and as she is a major star in India, they will want to make an example of her.

What's the world coming to when Sania is going to prison because someone published sole-shots of her in the presence of the Indian flag, when Günther Parche didn't have to spend a single day in jail for stabbing Monica Seles, and the burglars who tied up Anna Chakvetadze haven't even been caught yet? The logic of this world is simple: the innocent go down at the slightest faux pas while the guilty get off scot-free.

I've been a demi-fan of Sania since I first watched her play at Wimbledon 2005, and saw her groundstrokes of flairsome power. She's also very sexy, especially what I've seen of her so far this year.

Sania had a sophomore-slump in 2006, as she had to put up with the distractions of Muslim fundamentalists who issued a fatwa against her for playing tennis in bare legs. 2007 was better, as she compiled a 30:19 record and reached the Stanford final, beating three top-22 players back to back before losing to Anna Chakvetadze.

Sania has had a decent start to 2008, going 1:2 in Hopman Cup singles-rubbers, and reaching the quarter-finals of Hobart (beating two journeywomen, and losing to Flavia Pennetta on the day the flag-complaint was filed), while Iroda finished her miserable 2007 season with a quarter-final at ITF Dubai in December.

The only previous Iroda v Sania meeting was at the Asian Games in December 2006, when Iroda was on decent form, but possibly suffering from the back-injury that would wreck her 2007, and Sania won 6-3 6-0.

Apparently Sania is distraught about her prosecution - hardly a frame of mind conducive to successful tennis - but unless Iroda has been injury-free enough to do some amazing preparation in the last month, it will take a miracle for Iroda to come through this one.

No can only get coverage of 3 courts
Went to watch Akgul, who I thought would be alot better but Iroda was not there

Sania def Iroda 64 62
Iroda had points to go up 4-1* up in the first set

31 UEs, 11 DFs but only 15 winners and 5 aces

I think Pattaya is next up for Iroda

Firstly, I can’t tell you how STUNNING Iroda looked in that salmon coloured outfit, SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY HOT!! PHENOMINAL!! :lick: I’ve got to go and take a cold shower now...

First set Iroda played well, matching Sania to an impressive standard. Iroda back playing with what looks like her old racquet. But Sania upped her game further and a few more errors crept into Iroda’s play, particually DF’s, which cost her the set.

IT-SM

*0-0 40/30 1-0* 30/40 *1-1 40/0 2-1* AD/40 *3-1 40/AD 3-2* 0/40 *3-3 40/AD 3-4* 40/AD *3-5 AD/40 4-5* 30/40 4-6

Second set Sania kept to a high standard. Stonking FH winners, reminded me of Graf. Hits very hard. She seemed a bit quicker around the court than Iroda. More and more errors creeping into Iroda’s game, but she looked relaxed, LOL with the crowd and smiling!

*0-0 0/40 0-1* 30/40 *0-2 40-15 1-2* 40/AD *1-3 AD/40 2-3* 15/40 *2-4 15/40 2-5* 0-40 2-6

Match Stats (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/stats/day7/2136ms.html)

First set performance was very good, matching a #31 ranked player. That’s a significant improvement from when they previously met in 2006. That’s as much as we could of expected. Well done Iroda! :)

The following match report is from a Sania fans perspective. No doubt a little more neutral and detailed than mine, but I didn’t find it easy, concentrating on the tennis, with such eye-candy on display

saniapower: “Sania started the match with her usual ball bashing & quickly Iroda was 3-1 up & Mirza looked concerned. But she quickly understood she needs to rally to beat Iroda. Mirza then won 4 successive games before Iroda held. Mirza then served out the set 6-4. Not to mention Iroda's df helped Sania to win the match. Iroda was losins her service games mainly due to her dfs. Very 1st game of the 2nd set, Iroda committed 3 df & with one beautiful bf down the line winner mirza broke her. Mirza finished the job with another BHDTL winner when iroda DF gave Mirza her 1st mp. Mirza fh was finding its radar & bh also good but still sometime looked lack of gameplan, hitting straight to Iroda & her returns were coming with interest. Still definitely a better performance compared to the last yr 1st rd against Savchuk, a comfortable victory. But she will have to play better in the rd 2 if she wants to avoid the last yrs Nakamora episode. I'm impressed with Mirza net play, she almost won all the net points except one smash which she hit straight to iroda & her return fell inside the court. One thing to mention that Iroda has a booming serve & it was causing lot of problems for Sania.”

Iroda concerned over corruption in tennis

Scott said he met with WTA players in Melbourne on Saturday and that the gambling issue "was the first item on the agenda for me."

"I wanted to signal to the players that it was a most important issue," he said, "and my message was simple: that women's tennis has a tremendous amount of momentum, we've had great success in 2007, and that this is one issue I see out there that could put a black cloud over us.

"It wasn't the first time that we've discussed it, but I wanted to elevate the importance of it and be very clear with the players that we have a zero tolerance, that a player caught would have a lifetime ban from the sport."

Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, who lost her first-round match Tuesday to India's Sania Mirza, attended Saturday's meeting. She said it was important that the gambling issues were discussed.

"The public has to know that the outcome of our matches are fair, that they aren't affected by people on the tour or off it who stand to make money from the result," Tulyaganova said. "It's the only way we can have any credibility."

I saw most of the match and was also impressive with Iroda - its been years since I last saw her play and was a little worried after hearing the hopman cup reports about her but I was really impressive. I honestly think she is one of the hardest hitters on the tour. Her serve (when it went in) was incredible. The second serve is still shaky and why I think there was so many DFs. The backhand was a delight but some of her forehands in the first set were out of this world. The only difference was that Sania moves better.

The problem is I dont think Iroda wants to play challengers :p But with an injury free year and still working on her fitness, I think she could be top 100 very very soon!

Went to the open today as my dad got some free tickets last minute, meaning I called up my work saying I was sick  Got there early and decided to watch the Bryan bros practise and who happened to practise after them? Iroda and Akgul :) I was a bit suprised to why they were still in Melb but I wasn't complaining. I'm guessing there getting ready for Fed Cup zonals which I think are in 2 weeks, somewhere in Asia. They'd basically gone for a jog and done some stretches and thats when the rain came down. I hear Iroda say "I thought it never rains in this country" And then either Akgul or Iroda "I must bring the rain here"
Anyway as they were getting off the court, I quickly asked Iroda for a photo and since Akgul was there, I said for her to get into the pic as well. When my mate (Dom - fellow poster) was attempting to take the pic, he didn't know he was taking a video instead and couldn't work out of why there was no flash. After I told him both Iroda and Akgul had a bit of a laugh.
She told me they were gonna train in the afternoon as well but it rained all day here so she probably never got to train.
I would have asked her about her injuries, schedule, etc. if they didn't have to quickly get off the court.
All well, there's always next year :P

Albina Khabibulina (UZB/1040) def. Po Kuen Lam (HKG/not ranked) 6-0 6-2

Ling Zhang (HKG/411) def. Vlada Ekshibarova (UZB/406) 6-3 6-4

Amanmuradova & Tulyaganova def. Lam & Zhang 6-2 6-0

Yesterday I ordered Pool B by matches, but the correct method is by ties. In the event of a draw, it then goes to matches, or further still, sets – and that’s how Pool A was decided.

Pool A (decided on ties, matches and sets)
1. New Zealand
2. Australia(1)
3. Indonesia
4. India(3)

Pool B (decided on ties)
1. Uzbekistan 3-0
2. Chinese Taipei(2) 2-1
3. Thailand(4) 1-2
4. Hong Kong 0-3

There’s now confusion as to whether there will be a semi-final stage, between the top 4 teams, or just one final play off between UZB and NZL. The ITF contradict themselves: http://www.fedcup.com/ties/ao1.asp http://www.fedcup.com/results/ao1.asp

This Fed Cup draw so far has surprised me in more than one way.

Uzbekistan seem to be the only country that cannot offer a photo of some or all of its players. :(

Jiro can produce the results faster than the official site in some instances. In addition, he provides us with some super photos. ;)

Iroda and company Vs New Zealand on 02.02 in the play-off. [This is the only match listed on the official web site.]

Iroda has not lost a match yet. :bounce:

2. Tulyaganova v Mirza review (Tuesday 15th January)
-----------------------------

Nice winner, nice loser:
+ SANIA MIRZA [31,DF] d. Iroda Tulyaganova [WC,EF], 6-4 6-2

An expected result after the year Iroda's had. She served a monstrous 11 double faults in nine service-games, and had a W:UE ratio of 15:31, while Sania's was 21:20. At least Iroda's serve has lost none of its power (up to 119mph), but she only got 50% of first serves in, and it made a huge difference when she did so.

At least it doesn't feel so bad that she lost to Sania, whom I like a lot as a player, and find very sexy. I also have a great deal of sympathy for Sania over the persecution she continues to suffer, and I hoped she would go on to do all the things I unrealistically wanted Iroda to do at this tournament.

I saw Sania's third-round loss to Venus Williams on BBCi, and I was most impressed: Sania may not have much of a serve, but her groundstrokes are of top-ten quality and flairsome power - she was often overpowering Williams!

The following articles focus on Sania, but I've only included those that mention Iroda.

Mirza admits she considered quitting over flag-row (Reuters)
By Simon Cambers (Editing by Greg Stutchbury)
>>>
Sania Mirza, at the centre of controversy in India for reportedly disrespecting her national flag, admitted on Tuesday she had considered quitting the sport over the row.

But the 21-year-old, who advanced to the second round of the Australian Open with a 6-4 6-2 win over Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, said it was only a fleeting thought, and she expected to be around for a while yet.

"I think a lot of thoughts went through my head in the last couple of weeks," Mirza told reporters.

"One of the thoughts was that [to quit the sport], but I wouldn't say it was serious enough that I am going to quit right now."

Mirza is the subject of a court-summons in the central city of Bhopal after a private citizen made a complaint under the country's Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act.

The controversy surrounds a photograph taken at the Hopman Cup mixed-team event in Perth, played at the beginning of the year, that appeared to show Mirza's bare feet resting near the national flag.

The maximum punishment for the offence is a three-year jail-term, but Mirza, one of her country's biggest sporting-heroes, said she would never do anything to hurt India.

"I just know that I would not do anything to disrespect my country," she said.

"I love my country - I wouldn't be playing Hopman Cup otherwise - but besides that, I am not allowed to comment."

Mirza admitted, though, that her preparations for the year's first Grand-Slam event had been affected by the controversy.

"It's not easy to deal with things like that off the court," she said.

"Obviously there are some misunderstandings happening. I am not super-human, so it does affect me a little bit.

"I am not a politician here, to outsmart people and try to fight. That's not what I am trying to do - I am trying to play tennis, I am 21, and I am trying to do the best I can.

"However I try and block it out, it's still at the back of my mind. Under the circumstances, I am just glad I came through the first round."

Sania Mirza tries to focus on the court despite troubles off
By Dennis Passa: AP Sports Writer
>>>
In her darkest moments, Sania Mirza wonders if she should quit tennis.

The Indian tennis-star wishes her only concern before a match was to study her opponent. But it is hardly that simple.

Instead, she's taking phone-calls from lawyers in India, answering questions about her loyalty to her country, and defending her Muslim beliefs.

"It's not easy to deal with things like that off the court. I am not superhuman so it does affect me," Mirza said Tuesday after her first-round victory at the Australian Open. "As much as I try to block it out, it's still in the back of your mind."

When she first came on the WTA Tour full time three years ago - her first Grand Slam was the Australian Open in 2005 - she was often criticised for her short skirts and midriff-revealing T-shirts that put her at odds with sections of the orthodox Muslim clergy.

Now her nationalism has been questioned. She was photographed at the Hopman Cup in Perth this month with her bare feet near an Indian flag.

On 9th January, a social worker in India went to court in Bhopal and had a judge issue a summons under the "Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act." The court was told that Mirza disrespected the Indian flag by "sitting in a manner so that her feet pointed at the flag, which he felt was derogatory and had hurt him."

Mirza insists she would never show lack of respect for India.

"I love my country," said Mirza, who is from the southern city of Hyderabad. "I wouldn't be playing Hopman Cup otherwise. But other than that, I am not allowed to comment because it is before the courts."

Last week, she said she considered quitting tennis and ending a career that has brought her one WTA Tour title and seven final-appearances.

"It does play on your mind. You do start to think that at the end of the day, I am not a politician to outsmart people," Mirza said. "That's not what I am trying to do, which is to play tennis. I'm 21 and trying to be the best I can be.

"A lot of thoughts went through my head in the past couple of weeks, and one of the thoughts was [quitting]. But I wouldn't say that they were serious enough that I would quit right now."

On Tuesday, the 31st-seeded Mirza won 6-4 6-2 over wild card Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan.

"It was very tricky to play again," Mirza said. "I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to blank out everything and play a tennis-match."

In 2005, she became the first Indian woman to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam, losing to Serena Williams in Australia after being granted a wild card.

"It is very special," she said. "There were a lot of firsts involved."

This year, she could face Venus Williams in the third round if she beats Switzerland's Timea Bascinszky in the second round.

"I always feel confident when I come back here," she said.

"At the end of the day, it is a sport, and we deal with bad line-calls on a daily basis," Mirza says, then adds, smiling, "I have my own set of controversies to deal with."

Sania Mirza is failing to fly the flag for India
By Martin Johnson for The Daily Telegraph <www.telegraph.co.uk>
>>>
National pride: Sania Mirza is proving popular but controversial

Melbourne is a long way from home for a young girl from Hyderabad, and ordinarily Sania Mirza would have been pleased to see one of her supporters waving an Indian flag when she walked onto court for her first-round women's singles match at the Australian Open yesterday.

On this occasion, however, the sight of it more likely made her break out into a nervous sweat. A couple of weeks ago, the 21-year-old was photographed with her feet up while watching a colleague playing in an international exhibition-match in Perth, and the proximity of her toes to a nearby Indian flag has raised temperatures in her home-state to vindaloo-levels.

A High Court lawyer has even gone so far as to file a case for her arrest (without bail) and a three-year jail-sentence.

The initial hearing is due to be held this week under something called the "Prevention Of Insult To The National Honour Act", citing "disrespect" to the national flag. India's predilection for red tape, taught to them by the Imperial British, but since refined to gargantuan levels, means that by the time the case gets to court she will probably be a grandmother, but it's a bit of worry nonetheless.

The sight of the flag may have been responsible for her going 1-3 behind early on to Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, but she rallied to win comfortably enough in straights sets: 6-4 6-2. The No 31 seed did admit, though, that staying focused was becoming quite a feat when all the attention was on her feet.

"All I want to do is play tennis," she said, which was a bit of a surprise given that tennis is what keeps landing her in hot water.

When she first started out on the pro circuit at the age of 18, the length of her skirts prompted some religious mullah to issue a fatwa, which was a bit of a handicap to her chosen profession given that fashion in women's tennis-apparel has moved on - not to mention up - since Suzanne Lenglen's knickers were covered by several petticoats and a skirt which picked up chalk from the baseline.

Sania's skirt yesterday was no more than a pelmet, although she did offer a compromise by wearing underwear that resembled a pair of bicycle-shorts. She was taking more of a chance with her choice of top though, which flew up over her navel every time she launched herself into a serve.

When Sania, who is Shia Muslim, first bared her thighs on a tennis-court, people took to the streets to burn effigies of her, although this in itself is such a common event in India that it more or less doubles the smog-levels. It's most prevalent after a game of cricket, and there is barely an Indian batsman in history who hasn't had an effigy of himself set on fire.

Sania, who apparently records more hits on the Google Internet-site than even a cricketing-icon like Sachin Tendulkar, only narrowly escaped another fatwa last month by issuing a written apology for filming an advertisement close to a mosque, so one way or another, she keeps putting her foot in it.

Or in the case of flags, on it.

Indians seem to be acutely sensitive over issues that wouldn't raise an eyebrow elsewhere, and their cricketers - currently on the other side of the country in Perth - recently made a complaint (later withdrawn) over an Australian bowler calling one of them a "bastard." This tells you that they don't know much about Australians, for whom the word is close to a term of endearment.

Sania confessed that all the fuss back at home had affected her to the extent of wondering whether it was worthwhile carrying on playing, but she would have had to have been mentally away with the pixies to have been bothered by yesterday's opponent.

The girl from Uzbekistan might have been more of a handful had there not been a net between her and her opponent, which she found so regularly she'd have more chance of making it as a striker for Tashkent United.

She also racked up 11 double faults in nine service-games, but at least Miss Tulyaganova didn't have to worry about the consequences of displaying her knickers: a natty shade of orange.

Sania, on the other hand, could be facing yet another fatwa for her behaviour immediately after leaving the court, when she walked up to a man and - shock, horror - kissed him.

True, it was the lightest of pecks on both cheeks, and she was merely greeting her coach, but back home in Hyderabad, some bearded Indian cleric may already be demanding the death-penalty.

Women tennis-players approached to throw matches
By Dennis Passa: AP Sports Writer
>>>
Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, who lost her first-round match on Tuesday to India's Sania Mirza, attended Saturday's meeting [with WTA CEO Larry Scott and 250 female players]. She said it was important that the gambling-issues were discussed.

"The public has to know that the outcome of our matches are fair, that they aren't affected by people on the Tour or off it who stand to make money from the result," said Tulyaganova. "It's the only way we can have any credibility."

Mirza said she has "never been approached, and I do not know personally of anyone who has been approached" to throw matches.

"As far as we know, women's tennis is clean," she said. "A lot has happened of course in the men's and there is a lot of talk.

"I think there needs to be a punishment - it's a profession."
<<<

Match-fixing is another prime example of what I was saying about the innocent being punished while the guilty get off scot-free. The ATP have dragged Nikolay Davydenko's name through the mud without any proof of wrongdoing, and banned three Italian men who bet on tennis-matches other than their own, but they are no closer to catching the real villains (and it's a fair bet that match-fixing does go on in the lower echelons of tennis) until they start bugging the locker-rooms, and using wiretappers and packet-sniffers to monitor telephone- and Internet-conversations.

The ATP talk about suspicious betting-patterns, but I'm more concerned about suspicious banning-patterns, given that they target Italians over gambling and Argentinians over doping.

And if it's true that the Russian Mafia are forcing players to throw matches, God help us.

IRODA TULYAGANOVA
-----------------

Career-high ranking: No. 16 (16th June 2002)
2007 year-end ranking: No. 355

WHAT HAPPENED: The hard-hitting kid from Uzbekistan served notice of her presence in 2001, when she won back-to-back tournaments in the fall, beating Elena Dementieva, Paola Suárez, and Patty Schnyder at the former, and Kim Clijsters at the latter. She had also beaten Mary Pierce the month before. Later that year, she would add Justine Henin to her collection of scalps. She has not won another title or beaten another top 10 player since. In 2003, her elbow began giving her serious trouble, ending her season halfway through. She came back more than a year later, at Tashkent, but won only one match, and then ended up in challengers. Family-conflict has reportedly also been an issue.

OUTLOOK: Long road back, but could become a regular Tour-player again

Seven of her eight match-wins in the last two years have come in a one-month span in late 2006 when she made the semi-final at Kolkata and the final at Tashkent. Tulyaganova made her Grand Slam return at the Australian Open earlier this year, playing a relatively solid match against Sania Mirza in the first round. She then won two rounds of qualifying at Pattaya City before dropping her third match. Her game is still in the rebuilding-stage, but she's going in the right direction.

Thanks a lot for the nice article. Iroda definetely can come back to the top 50 if only she gets a bit more consistent. Well i think she should play more challenger tournaments, then she would get a lot more easy points than in the wta tournaments. anybody knows why she hardly plays any challenger.

Welcome aboard the Rodi Roller-Coaster, bavaria86 :D

She played plenty of challengers in 2006, but when her ranking allows she seems to prefer WTA. She’s not got much option right now: 19th alternate for $50k, New Delhi, IND. (http://www.itftennis.com/womens/tournaments/tournamentoverview.asp?tournament=1100017308) Hard/outdoor. Qualies start 8th. March.

Bavaria, this question was taken from the Notes and Netcords article back in 2006, it mentions Iroda playing on the challeger circuit.
Has it been tough working yourself back up the rankings?
It was hard to play some of the small ITF events. It was tough playing qualifying of those. There I was, ex-Top 16; if I lost a match, it
was hard to get over. But, I told myself to forget what happened before. I had to become a new player. If I didn’t, then losing to a
player ranked No.200 or No.500 would make me feel guilty. I decided not to think about the past anymore. And with this new outlook,
everything started going well again. I began winning and believing in myself again. The best thing now that I am winning again is that since I’ve been so high, I know how to get there again.

Hopefully she can get into qualifying and win a few rounds hereI think 20% of the field has to go AWOL, to make those 12 places. Can’t see that happening now.

Iroda has moved into the qualies list at the Bangalore event :yeah:Well that’s put me right! Reason is, no one wants to play here, they’re all saving themselves for IW. Big points going begging, hopefully Rodi can cash in :D

A better scoreline than last year, but a poor third set. Shame, because Iroda now misses a 2R encounter with Sexy Lexy, and that no doubt, would of been easier than stealing candy from a baby :banghead:

I guess the positive here is Iroda did better then last time, still a shame about the last set
Dubz draw isn't out yet but Iroda could be playing with Akgul.
If not, the ITF in New Delhi is next on the agenda, she's still a couple of spots away from the MD.

Iroda isn't playing dubz this week.
Next up the ITF in New Delhi, Iroda is listed at number 3 on the qualies list, though there are another 2 players with a higher rank who are MDO. Officially Iroda needs 5 players to w/d
