SUGIYAMA Ai JPN vs Q

Am I the only one who thinks that's a great draw for Lindsay? she avoids Amelie, Svetlana, Venus and Elena until the finals with players like Myskina and Zvonereva in her half. Being number 2 seed is really working well for Lindsay.

You're right - that's a great draw and it's the first time that I've seen it to comment on. Off the top of my head I'd say that Lindsay has beaten most of those in her half already this year; Vera, Karolina, Anastasia, Nadia, Paola etc.

I'm pretty certain that she has a winning record against them all too. All the tricky players are in Amilies half

GO LINDSAY GO! :bounce:

I completely agree Rachel. Great draw and Amelie really has got the tricky players in her half. Poor Anastasia can't get away from Lindsay can she! lol. Hopefully Lindsay's slight injury will improve and she should really get to the final at least here and hopefully become World No 1

Dinara is starting to play well again. She could cause a few problems, but she shouldn't.

I don't get Lindsay's scheduling. Three weeks in a row, then a long break until the YEC. She really should take a Phili WC...

Let's make it two in a row Lindsay. :D

so whats lindsay's draw? moscow, then zurich?? why is she not playing phili?? dont all the us players usually play this one?

How long is the break that she would be having?

She would have a three week break between Zurich and the YEC. I think that is too long between tournament. I think she might get a WC there though.

 oh my goodness!? Not the best or most exciting way to get number one, but number one is a great achievement either way!

Lindsay has been the most consistant throughout the year - fighting through injuries and over coming hurdles, like being able to defeat people she hasn't in many years - ie Williams sisters. Lindsay's come a long way in the last 18 months and although I would be upset I wouldn't blame her for retiring ending the year @ #1! Having said that, she won't want to leave the tour knowing that she has a shot and is the favourite to win slams next year.

Last time she ended the year number one and was favourite to win slams in the new year, she was badly injured needing an op. If she can end the year fit, I don't see why she shouldn't try for another slam in the new year!

go Lindsay :bounce:

Yeah, we all know she would have easily won the 2002 Australian had she been healthy enough to play it, cosidering how dominant she was at the end of 2001. Serena was out. Venus was injured. Kim and Justine were still babies. Jennifer, Martina, and Monica could never challenge an in-form Lindsay anyway. Had she not have needed knee surgery, that title was as good as hers if she wanted it.

Serena's special seeding will have expired by then. Kim is not eligible for a special seeding until April 2, 2005. Justine is not eligible for a special seeding until March 2005. Also, a player who is currently #1 cannot have a demoted seeding in WTA events.

They would have no reason to do it next year though. Problem with Lindsay this year was that her ranking was right around the other player's protected rankings.

Next year she will be number one and there's not a chance that they're bumping her seeding down for the fifth striaght slam.

Oh my god! I hadn't even thought of that possibility. That would be so incredbly fantastic. Sexy, even! ESPN would just have to show her over the other American gals (the Williams Sisters and Capriati, who they have always preferred) at the Oz Open most of the time.

When was the last time Davenport was seeded #1 at a Grand Slam? Was it the 1999 Aussie Open? That would be 6 whole years between #1 seedings at a Major. Probably a record of some sort. Another reason for Lindsay to NOT retire, along with the incentive for #4 and 50+ !

Andrew.

Lindsay and Corina are playing doubles as well - they have to play Birnerova/Prusova in the first round - they drew the harder side of the draw with Ruano Pascual/Suarez in their half.

RayRob

 Well, Lindsay couldn't have it good both ways - LOL. Ruano Pascual/Suarez are my fave doubles team when Lindsay isn't playing...but for this tournie I think i would like to see Lindsay and Corina do well! :D

If Lindsay and Cornia do well during these indoors, can they qualify for the Champs? Is that what they're aiming to do? It's only top four that qualify [in doubles] though isn't it, so there may not be much chance?

Mauresmo has pulled out. If Lindsay wins one match next week, she will be number one.
I've just taken a look at the ranking points and Amilie is on 4395 and Lindsay on 4380. Surely Lindsay wouldn't have to pick up a racket this week to become number one next week!? Lindsay has no points to defend; so nothing to come off, but Amilie has her runner-up points to come off; but she's not her to defend those points.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but with a difference of 15 points, Amilie has more than 15 points to come off this week......

Win or lose her first match, Lindsay will become number one on Monday 18th Oct. Can anyone confirm this?

They came off already because of the shift in the schedule due to the Olympics.

gossipcom
Oct 12th, 2004, 12:18 PM
I think at this moment she would be the favourite for Player of the Year - because noone is near her 7 titles that she has won in the year (usually the person who wins the YEC or most titles gets the player of the year).

Moscow came off then Filderstadt and this week Zurich comes off and Mauresmo only had 1 point to defend from Zurich.

So technically depending on the week of scheduling if the Advanta points came off a week before the tournament is played then Lindsay would be the no 1 player before that tournament - that is if she didn't pick up a racquet including the KC, Zurich, etc.

But here's hoping *fingers crossed* she can add a nice little amount of points from the KC and Zurich so she will have a lead going into the WTA Champs - as I said *fingers crossed*

Basically the ultimate situation for Lindsay would have a massive lead going into the last tournaments of the year and then it wouldn't matter what happens later on, etc.

One thing is for sure - the no 1 position is now a two woman race - Mauresmo vs Davenport - since Henin-Hardenne has pulled out from all tournaments for the rest of the year.

Andrew.
Oct 12th, 2004, 01:02 PM
There is no race. Lindsay leads safe points by more than 700. Mauresmo would literally have to win everything from Zurich on.

Btw, RayRob, Corina and Lindsay don't have a chance at qualifying for the Dubs Champs since they haven't played at all this year before last week. The Top 4 teams must be Ruano Pascual/Suarez, Kuznetsova/Likhovtseva, Stubbs/Black, and Petrova/Shaughnessy. Or did Navratilova/Raymond somehow get one of those slots?

Her doubles match is about to start right now - winner of it plays Ruano Pascual / Suarez.

I think she and Corina are just going out to have some fun - and not worry if they lose, etc - Corina will still be sticking around since she's usually Lindsay's practice partner :)

ETA: Lindsay is arguing with the chair umpire when serving for the match in doubles, subsequently not the best time to argue with a CU is when you're down Lindsay's been broken 3 times in the match. It's gone to a 3rd set and wouldn't surprise me if they lose - Lindsay and Corina just can't hold their serves in this match.

Yeah Lindsay was coughing a lot and moving pretty slow at the end of the 2nd set. She lost 4 and 6, which isn't as bad as you think it is if you're seeing this for the first time! Really, this is not a devastating loss, Myskina played REALLY well and Lindsay was just off, going for too much at times. The ump was a total bitch with the calls as well. The crowd was applauding Lindsay's errors so I don't blame her for not wanting to really fight. She is number one, and luckily Zurich suits her game better; I believe it's a faster court (and there is no partisan crowd!). Lindsay has never really played well in Moscow (maybe the only indoor tournament she's never won?) so this isn't shocking. Rest up Lindsay, take some cold medicine :)

Lindsay:sad: I think she will withdraw from Zurich because she is sick. As you said she was coughing a lot and looked really tired from the start.
But definitely the worst thing is russian crowd:rolleyes: They were clapping after double faults and even after first serve fault:rolleyes: It was disgusting and pathetic.

Withdrawing from Zurich wouldn't be very smart. She probably wouldn't even start until Wednesday, so that's quite a few days to rest. Also, Moscow's courts suck. That's probably a main reason she hasn't played there much in the past.

I love how in GM some posters are predicting the beginning of the end for Lindsay :tape: :tape:  :tape:

I hope it's just the flu and nothing serious. If she has to withdraw from Zurich, then she should do that instead of the YEC. Los Angeles is still a month away so Lindsay has time to rest up! Get better, Lindsay!

I knew she was a little under the weather because she showed no emotion at all. If she had played like that under normal circumstances, that racket would have met the court a few more times lol

Yes, she seemed to really not care that much. Understandable under the circumstances.

She shouldn't have to withdraw from the YEC. Even if this is the flu, sometimes it can be gone in 48 hours.

Myskina was amazing today, she started well and maintained her level of play. Lindsay was unlucky to lose the first set, it could easily have been 6-4 in her favour and then in the tie break you could tell she was suffering and didn't really want to face a third set... 2 double faults in a tie break? she obviously wasn't up to it [not to take anything away from Myskina]. Also, the crowd cheered more for a double fault from Lindsay than for a super winner, so that's got to be hard.

I think the court at Moscow might have something to do with Lindsay's cough, Anastacia was coughing yesterday and it's cold outside. Get well soon, Lindsay. By the way, I would consider flu relatively serious and long term. I think Lindsay should head home.

If Myskina plays like this whenever she is defending something, which I consider the real reason why she put in so much effort, she may well win the french again.

MOSCOW : The Kremlin Cup final will be an all-Russian affair for the first time after defending champion Anastasia Myskina beat new world number one Lindsay Davenport of the United States on Saturday.

Myskina, also the French Open champion, had already met Davenport four times but on this occasion the second seed's ill health was a factor in the Russian's 6-4, 7-6 (7/1) victory, her first over Davenport, in 1hr 18min.

In what will be her fourth final this season Myskina will face Elena Dementieva, the fifth seed, who beat another Russian, Elena Bovina, 6-4, 7-5.

The first break of serve didn't arrive until the tenth game, when Myskina broke to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, the duo traded breaks from the start but a tie-break loomed, and Myskina held sway to set up the first ever all-Russian final at the Kremlin Cup.

"I desperately wanted to win today," said Myskina.

"It helped me a lot that Lindsay was feeling ill, while I have just recovered from a fever.

"The surface is also rather slow which is better for me as Lindsay doesn't like long rallies."

Davenport, who regained top spot in the world rankings with a second round success here earlier in the week, admitted her poor health had left her depleted.

"I felt like I couldn't play at 100-percent," said Davenport.

"Of course it's a disappointment to lose but I have positive feelings about my performance here."

Dementieva, a two-time Grand Slam runner-up this year, had no such advantage over a healthy Bovina, who lost her way in the first set when Dementieva broke serve in the third game before taking the set inside 40 minutes.

In the second the opponents produced seven breaks, but Dementieva's precision made the difference and she went on to claim the match in 1hr 40 minutes to record her fifth win in their seven head-to-head meetings.

I think Lindsay played well considering how unwell she felt.

She has withdrawn from Zurich and I am pleased. She needs time and rest to get fit to play again. Would be good for her to plat Advanta if she is fit and well enough by then.

I am so pleased Common Sense has Prevailed here :)
