Martha Stewart starts prison term

Martha Stewart, the US lifestyle guru convicted of lying to federal investigators about a suspicious share sale, has begun her prison sentence.

She was sentenced to five months' imprisonment in July, after being found guilty of conspiracy and obstruction.

Her website revealed she had started her prison term at a minimum-security jail in West Virginia on Friday.

Stewart earned millions from a business empire based on selling domestic items and lifestyle advice.

'Look at Nelson Mandela'

Addressing "friends" on her website, Ms Stewart wrote: "By the time you read this, I will have reported to a minimum-security prison in Alderson, West Virginia, to begin serving my five-month sentence."

Despite an appeal against her conviction that has yet to be resolved, Stewart said she did not want to delay going to prison.

"I have decided to serve my sentence now because I want to put this nightmare behind me as quickly as possible for the good of my family and my company," she wrote on her website.

Stewart had earlier expressed optimism at her conviction, saying: "There are many, many good people who have gone to prison. Look at Nelson Mandela."

Penal profit

Although she stepped down as chairwoman and chief executive of her firm, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, the domestic icon remains the biggest shareholder in the business.

She is expected to resume working for the firm after her release from prison.

The prison at Alderson, West Virginia, has been home to a number of famous inmates, including the jazz singer, Billie Holliday. Residents of the town are hoping the media interest in its newest arrival will make them wealthier, according to the Associated Press news agency. Some locals have rented their lawns to TV networks' satellite trucks while others are selling visitors souvenirs and merchandise.

Do we need to feel to sorry for this greedy cow???

I say quite!

Especially compared to the Enron and Halliburton dogs that still
have yet to be brought to justice by this government and yet
can go after Martha with such venom.

IMO, it was nothing more than a diversion to take
the heat and focus off Cheney and the pigs at
Halliburton and Enron while going after a
high profile powerful woman that those whole revile
her characteristics would praise if she were a man! :o

To me, she totally did it, I mean, everyone insider trades and everyone lies about it. Come on. She doesn't deserve prison. I'm furious!!!!!!!

Nelson Mandella she's not, she should lay off that one.

I don't really care about Martha Stewart, I don't watch her programs or read her magazines, but I think what they've done to her is outrageous.

Yes, probably she did lie to the investigators, so what? why the hell were they wasting resources in such a trivial transaction in the first place?

If she gets 5 months for lying, then some people should be burnt alive.

It's like, give me a fucking break, she lied, so what? who did she harm with that?
to start of, she did not do insider trading as she is not an insider, what are you suppose to do? someone tells you a company is in trouble, you should hold on your shares to be "honest"? yeah whatever.
And this broker assistant that declared against her, the guy was hungry for publicity, he did sound like a cry baby and let me tell you something, he might have gotten his 5 minutes under the sun, but he aint working in brokerage again. Simple, if I had investments, I would never put my money in a company where this guy works, for what? to have him declaring against me if I didn't treat him well once? I would simply take my money somewhere else, just if he works there.
it's amazing the investigators spent time and money on this, for what? what did they get in exchange? will they have investors to be more "honest"? not really, they will just be more careful, next time an investigator asks an investor a question the answer will be "talk to my lawyer" even if they asked for the weather.
Great job convicting a "liar" when Enron and Worldcom's executives got away with it
it sure sends a strong message, cheat, but do it right.
government Laywers

as per Mandela, I don't think she was comparing herself to him, I think she meant that it's not too bad being in prison since people like Mandela have been.

I am not a fan of Martha, but seriously, her sentence to jail is just deplorable and outrageous. Going to jail for lying? When some people kill, steal, rob, and get probations? sick world.
If they spent their time going after murderers and other real criminals as they did after Martha, the world would be much more peaceful
