Schumacher sees red

China hosts its first Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday, but some of its journalists are still in first gear when it comes to their knowledge of the sport.

World champion Michael Schumacher was certainly thrown by a few of the questions at his first Chinese news conference on Wednesday.

Ferrari's German star was at his most diplomatic after being asked by one reporter in Shanghai: "Why are you always in red? Is it your lucky colour?"

His Italian team have raced red cars since the F1 world championship was introduced in 1950, so the enquiry was unexpected to say the least.

After explaining that Ferrari had "been red forever", Schumacher said he hoped the colour - considered both lucky and imperial in China - would help Ferrari this weekend.

He was also a little flummoxed when asked: "Can you win the championship here in Shanghai?"

The 35-year-old actually clinched his seventh drivers' crown in August with second place in the Belgian GP. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gifNew dawn for F1 in China (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/3673430.stm)

But mindful of his ambassadorial role at an event that has huge financial importance for F1, Schumacher was a model of politeness in his response. And after winning 12 of the year's 15 races so far, he is unlikely to need the intervention of any fortune, Chinese or otherwise, on Sunday.

No, Schumacher wants to wear red because...umm... he is a red commie. :) Interesting that a whole article is dedicated to one stupid question by the Chinese journalist. If this one article per one stupid question at post-match interview was instituted for tennis journalists, can you imagine how many tennis related articles there will be?

Jacques Villeneuve is competing here, right? Allez Renault.

BAR grab top spots in China

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40105000/jpg/_40105234_ralf270_203.jpg Ralf Schumacher was straight back into the swing of things in China

BAR's Anthony Davidson set the pace in Friday's first practice ahead of the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix.

The British test driver, who will not race on Sunday, was fastest in both sessions, ending up with a time of one minute 33.289 seconds.

Davidson's team-mate Jenson Button was second fastest, 0.885secs behind. Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard were third and fourth for McLaren, followed by Rubens Barrichello of Ferrari and Sauber's Giancarlo Fisichella. World champion Michael Schumacher was eighth fastest in his Ferrari, behind the Williams of his brother Ralf, who is making his return from injuries suffered in a crash in June's US Grand Prix.

Britain's Jenson Button was sixth fastest in 1:36.475, with Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello, who won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza 12 days ago, in seventh.

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, making his Formula One comeback with Renault after a year's absence, was 15th. Davidson's car was painted in a new livery to reflect a different brand of cigarette owned by BAR's owner, the tobacco giant BAT, which has a huge market in China.

Schumi is just bored and wants to see if he can do same as last week

its still gonna be a Rubens/Schumi 1/2 :p

Schumi is gonna race thru field in his full tank then when everyone goes into pits, he'll be about 2nd.

Now its gonna be an even better race :)

all GP's should be like this, make the fastest start from back.

Does someone else think Michael is just messing around now? :confused:Considering he recorded a fastest lap in his final round :o he's just playing now..

Luna_Angel_84
Sep 26th, 2004, 02:41 PM
I really don't think he was messing around. I think he just pushed extra hard right at the end to ty and prove a point, to come away from the race with something even if he couldn't have the pole or the win. He was probably driving flat out to achieve that lap, whereas other drivers fighting for positions have to be a litle more cautious to be sure that they stay on the black stuff. Michael didn't exactly have much to lose.

Anyhoo, it was a pretty good race and congrats to Rubens. :) Shame Monster only got 5th, but it's better than nothing. :p
