Next tournament is Warsaw! She loves playing there, she uses to be succesfull there and she has a lot of fans in Poland!, so she´ll have a great time.
Well, at least I know much more Polish fans of Eleni than french, italian, russian, spanish, etc.
If there is a ranking of her fans by country, it would be like that:
1) Greece
2) Australia
3) England
4) Poland
But this is just ordered by what I have seen, this is not official :p

Anyway, as I said: next tournament is Warsaw!

report about the last match by Paule22 :
I thought it was over for today but then I saw Bovina playing Daniilidou. It was getting already dark but the played until 8:30. Bovinas style reminds me a bit of Clijsters. She is getting all the balls as well, but plays them back so slowly and easy that after a while Daniilidou was able to make the point or the error. That's why Daniilidou won the second set. If Bovina is able to create a weapon, she will be Top 10. Daniilidou was claiming in the beginning of set three that she is not able to see the ball anymore and she wants to stop the match. But Bovina said she can see the ball and wants to go on, so they played and Elena was getting that match quite easily in set 3.

She might have not seen the ball or she was just too tired. But I'm glad she fought and didn't lose in two short sets.

I checked the Modena thread in the upcoming tournies section and Eleni isn't on the entry list for this event....not sure which one she'll play next.

Completely off topic - but i find it strange that the WTA Tour introduce a new clay court tournie between the grass court season and the US hard court season - how bizzarre

RayRob
Jul 12th, 2005, 11:30 AM
Well, I checked all the websites for upcoming USA tournies and so far nothing. Soon-to-be events like Cincinatti in the USA don't have Eleni on their entry list...and other events that follow cinci either have yet to be updated from last year, or are a teir 1 and 2 which Eleni may have to qualify for if there is a great interest in the main draw from top 20/30 players.

I will keep checking and update anything here....hopefully the lack of news is nothing to do with the shin problem she had at wimbledon in the first round

Any fans in Greece got any news from their local press???? That would be helpful :D

No news from the greek press either but they usually write about it a few days before the tournaments. But I do have an interview of Eleni a while after her thump surgery with some great pictures that you would love. Anyone interested in the pictures just let me know and I will e-mail them to you.

RayRob
Jul 14th, 2005, 11:40 PM
hey guizzy - I would be interested in reading that interview and seeing the pictures. The trouble with being a fan in the UK is that there is next to zero info about Eleni....infact, I got my regular tennis mag today and it has news and info about Wimbledon and yet little mention about Eleni. There was a bit of info about her beating #7 & RG champ, Justine Henin-Hardenne....but really not much, just a big picture of Justine and a mere mention of Eleni as if it were nothing :( It dissapoints me, but it also lacked any info about my fave player Lindsay Davenport - and she was a finalist...LOL

Probably best emailing me the article & pics to raygoin@yahoo.com (I persume the article is in english?)

Thanks,

___________________________

A second round draw with Venus is a great opportunity for Eleni. As I said in an earlier post, I feel that if Eleni can grab a couple of big wins then it will be the boost she needs to get her back in the top 20! She has it is her, and as you say, she usually only plays her best when a top player is at the other side of the court. Hopefully she's learned a lot from Wimbledon, that in the form she's in and less an injury, she can beat almost anyone.

Looking forward to it - it might be on TV if she plays Venus, but I don't think coverage starts until the 1/4's maybe even semis in the UK.

I just given the draw a closer look and it really is an opportunity draw for Eleni - other than Venus, there aren't really any big hitters, but even so the varied pace of shots that Eleni uses can really trouble these players. Players like jankovic and Schyder seem to relish playing against the "big hitters", but the way Eleni plays could be a real test for these top 20 players.

I don't think Leni could have asked for a better opportunity to begin her US hard court campaign...gutting thing is, Eurosport in the UK aren't showing this tournie except for some highlights of the final the day after the final.

I guess Eleni's first match might be either tuesday or wednesday, so may have to keep an eye on the live scoreboards :D

Doubles draw for Bank of the West classic:

Black/Stubbs [1]
Jankovic/Sprem

Talaja/Washington
Salerni/Vento-Kabchi

Raymond/Stosur [4]
Peschke/Schiavone

McShea/Spears
Daniilidou/Russell
_____________

Lee/Peng
Morariu/Schnyder

Benisova/Jidkova
Groenefeld/Shaughnessy [3]

Haynes/Perry
Qualifier

Hantuchova/Sugiyama
Likhovtseva/Zvonareva [4]
_________________________________________

A fairly good doubles draw here too - again some opportunities to play and defeat competant doubles pairs; Raymond/Stosur, Black/Stubbs. It won't be easy but at least they're away from Hantuchova/Sugiyama who defeated Daniilidou/Russell in Birmingham final (unfortunately I witnessed that courtside :o ) - I left quickly.....but I would have missed my train if it had gone on much longer :S

Eleni is not schedualed for today (monday) so I'm pretty sure she'll be playing tomorrow....will check the website late tonight before I go bed to see if the OOP will be up.

Any comments from everyone about either of the draws?

Well, I stayed up for the order of play for tuesday and Eleni is 3rd on court 1 against Sania Mirza who qualified - not an easy match by any stretch of the imagination but we know Eleni can do it :D

Here's the full OOP for Tuesday 26 July:

Play begins at 11:00 AM

Shaughnessy vs Zvonareva
Schiavone vs Jidkova
Daniilidou vs Mirza
Peer vs Groenefeld

Not before 7:30pm:

Stevenson vs Hantuchova
__________________________

I am estimating that Eleni's match will be around 3pm Stanford time, which is around 00:00CET sort of tuesday night/wednesday morning. I will probably stay up to watch the scores (which is about 11pm UK time) if I can find a live scoreboard somewhere....the official site doesn't have one! :(

I stayed up to watch the update in the OOP and Scores thread, it's now 1.25am and I'm off to bed if I can get sleep ;)

It's a shame about the loss (pity she couldn't have either maintained the breaks she has in the first or took the tiebreak) but at least she still has doubles. Hopefully this won't dampen her spirits for the rest of the US season.

:bigcry:

Leni and Jen lost in doubles :( 6-3, 6-4. i think there were a few breaks of serve and just when you thought they were fighting back, Schiavone and Peschke came back in the match.

It was a bad day in tennis for me - first Lindsay DAvenport retired at 5-0 with an injury, then Leni and Jen lost in doubles :(

Hopefully better chances in next event....Eleni isn't on the player list for Acura, but spaces may come available as Paola Saurez is on the list, but she's been out injured, plus Lindsay might decide not to play if she is bad  One consolation might be that Eleni gets to play that.

As a tier 1 event, there will be many chances for her to play some great players and hopefully beat them......but as yet, we don't know if she'll be playing there.

I'll have to keep an eye on that list.

OK, found out that Serena and Maria who are on the commitment list for the Acura Classic have actually officially withdrawn, so that is definately 2 extra places available in the main draw.....Lindsay now might be questionable as could Saurez.

As much as I hate seeing top players withdraw from a tier 1 event (dementieva could yet be the top seed  ), it could be a good chance for Eleni. Given her somewhat early exit in singles, she might want to try and take up one of the two - possibly four - extra spaces in the main draw.

Anyone think she might chose to do this? Or at least think it would be a good idea for her?

Anyone think she might chose to do this? Or at least think it would be a good idea for her?

-Rache
surely would be a good idea, the more points she can take up on the way,the better!and if some of the stronger ones withdraw, all the better for her!either way,i wish you all the best,leni-baby!!

The score board wasn't working for me a couple of hours ago but it is now! Seems the match might be on shortly as McShea/Spears are 7/5 5/2 up in their match which is the one before Eleni's.

If it's still not working for you, it might be because you do not have "falsh player" installed into your computer.

Leni and Jen went through to the next round with a victory over Talaja/Washington 6/4 4/6 6/2

Talaja/Washington never held serve in the final set, the two games they got were one each of the Leni/Jen service games.

I was hoping it would have been over in two sets because Leni should have a singles match tomorrow (well today ;) ) which could be a tough one. Hopefully she'll be fine!

Eleni is 3rd on Grandstand against Groenefeld. Play begins on grandstand at 10am, so Eleni's match is likely to be about 1pm local time, that's around 10pm CET. Well, I hate to be the barer of bad news....Leni lost again today to Groenefeld 7-6, 6-4

It's a tough loss because Leni was serving convincingly in the first set - holding serve to love or 15...but towards the end, she got broke and Groenefeld served for the first set at 5-4 but Leni broke back, each held serve. Then the tiebreak came and I think leni was a mini break down from the first point, then she went a mini break ahead at 4-2 in the tiebreak. Unfortunately she lost that 7-5.

Then the second set. her first service game was broken, Groenefeld had 2-0....Leni broke back and serve to make it 2-2.....then Leni went ahead a break at 4-2 and serving for 5-2, but Groenefeld broke again leveled it at 4-4....groenefeld broke again to make 5-4 and Leni tried to fight back but in the end it was too late: 7/5 6/4 :(

Leni seems to not have confidence when it comes to being ahead and staying ahead...she needs to work on her serve and to have confidence in it! She served well in the first set and I think had she have won that, she would have been more inclined to convert important points in the second.

It worried me that in the second set, she would be 40-0 up on her serve, but Groenefeld was let back in bringing it back to 40-30 or deuce,

hopefully Leni can win a few singles before the US Open just to give her a confidence boost on the hard courts - she needs it! It's even more gutting that her last 2 first round loses were extremely close matches, and a point here and there could have won them! Hopefully she won't be down on herself and she can look more on those possitive aspects of things.....although it might be tougher when you're in her shoes.

C'mon kidda, lets post some good singles results for the Us Open :D And best wished to you in the doubles with Jen :D

RayRob

Here serve has always bothered me....when I saw her play in the doubles final at the DFS Classic in Birmingham it accurred to me what the problem is.

She is 6ft 1inch tall and doesn't use her height at all. She makes contact with the ball quite low so doesn't get a full swing and it doesn't come down from the heighest height. I think i mentioned it in an email to someone; look at 2 other tall players like Lindsay Davenport and VEnus Williams. Both are similar height to Eleni, both rely on their serves but use their height to great advantages in different ways.

Venus has a bomb of a fast serve, it's not always well placed but the speed of the serve and weight of shot get's her many cheap points. The reason the serve is so fast is because she makes contact with the ball from about 10-11 feet in the air, actually jumping to launch herself to a heigher position and so uses the great angle from service box to her racket head to generate most of the speed. So in this case, Venus uses her height as a speed generator.

Lindsay on the other hand uses her height differently. Her serve isn't as fast as Venus but wins loads of cheap points because her ball placement is amazing! Lindsay makes contact with the ball about 9 to 10 feet in the air as she tends not to jump or launch herself like Venus does. This results in a slightly slower serve but is able to place the ball from service close to the service lines. Lindsay is able to do this because it's easier to direct the ball over the net, to where you want from a hiegher trajectory (if that's the right term). So, in this case Lindsay uses her heigh for great placement.

Eleni could adapt her serve in any of these ways, using her height by throwing the ball higher up and making contact with the ball in the air at full stretch, thus giving her more power and better placement. At the moment, i think, she lets her service toss drop quite low and sometimes she sort of stoops, or bends her knees low to hit the ball. Perhaps she uses her bended knees as a means of launching herself at the ball a bit like when you push a spring down, then let go. Unfortunately, doing this doesn't do your lower leg muscles any good....whether it be calf or the tendens below your knee (which we know Leni has had problems with).

Being tall in tennis is considered an advantage these days, and Eleni should use it effectively. Maybe I'm wrong on this, I don't know - they're my opinions from what I have observed and i know it's not too late for her to develop a better serve. This is key....and dare I suggest looking for another coach!? I know she gets on with Judith but sometimes coaches can only take a particular player so far, before they stop improving......but hey, what do I know?! ;)

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Well it seems like we all agree that Lena has a serve problem and I'm sure she and her coach have identified this problem a long time ago. The thing is that I don't see them doing anything drastic to improve it and not improving is catastrophic for her confidence and without confidence you can not improve and we start all over this cycle again.
I understand that she has a great relationship with her coach but I think that Judith can not offer anything more as a coach to Lena. She has done a great job until now bringing Lena where she is but things change, Lena isn't 18 anymore and if she wants to get higher then she has to adjust to the new facts and try to find someone who will push her further just like she did with her new fitness trainner.
I know it's not easy changing your coach, I've been through it myself but sometimes it's the only way.
But again these are only my thoughts. Any other thoughts to hear?

Eleni has a tough draw again. In the 1st round she faces Akkiko Morigami who retired in the second set of the San Diego's semifinal due to right knee tendonitis.

RayRob
Aug 7th, 2005, 02:01 PM
I just checked the draw because I didn't know whether or not she was in it. Eleni seems to be "drawing the short straw" as it were when it comes to these US Hard court draws because she's facing all the tough opponants!

Akkiko Morigami who she plays in the first round had a great run in San Diego, but if she isn't fully recovered from the knee problem then Leni will have a good chance. If Morigami withdraws, Leni yet again will get a "lucky loser" which she lost to in stanford again Mirza who was a LL at that event.

If Leni gets through, she would get to play Kuznetsova who I think Leni would love to play again because she has a hard hitting game which Leni can feed off and slow down with her back hand slice....Sveta has a lot of trouble against that sort of shot.

The great thing is, Eleni leads 2-1 against morigami in H2H's, except Morigami defeated Leni the last time they played at Birmingham last year (but it was because Leni had to retire in the final set) However, Leni's two wins against Akkiko were on hard courts....first time was indoors, second time was out doors in Miami.....so Eleni should go in with a good mental edge.

We'll see how it pans out and whether or not Akkiko will play.

And also, Leni is playing doubles with her possible second round opponant in singles; Sveta Kuznetsova! Wow, it will be interesting to see how this partnership goes :D

This is the first time they've played in the main draw. It's a good match for Elnei to get some practice and get into the swing of things.

Well, Leni has been honoured with opening proceedings on the Stadium court (first match on there this year as it wasn't used yesterday). Her match is at 11am that's 8pm CET so it's an earthly hour for my greek and polish friends. Unfortunately, I'll be at work so I am going to have to make sure there's lots of credit on my phone so I can keep up-to-date with the scores.

Then, the fun doesn't stop there....leni's first match with Sveta is last on court 4 (which is probably why they put her on first in any case). This will be around 2.30am CET (wednesday morning to us), but this is an approximate estimation so I could be slightly out.....I have counted as if each match preceeding Leni's doubles last's 1.5hours. Some last longer, some don't last as long but at least you have an idea if you want to stay up and follow scores :D

Lena finally did it. She won E.Salerni 7-6/7-5 in LA and got to the second round where she will be playing against her doubles partner Kuznetsova. By the way later on Eleni is playing with Kuznetsova in doubles in the last match of the day. Good luck there too Eleni.

Well done Leni! I bet she is well pleased! I was so annoyed because I was at work and couldn't get updates on my phone because WAP wasn't working, so a lady at work let me use hers but the sony ericsson WTA section said, "No latest scores to show" I was like  :bigcry: I had to wait and thankfully guizzy had the good news for me :D

I am going to stay online the doubles match, but I don't know where live scores will be if not on WAP, the JP Morgan Chase Open site doesn't seem to have a live scoreboard :( How annoying!

I'm just glad Leni has now got a singles win under her belt and I know she's more than capable of beating Sveta in the next round :bounce:

C'mon Leni! :woohoo:

Well, I aren't going to both stay up for the doubles match because there is no reliable scoring system.....the WAP service isn't working this week - I have emailed Sony Ericsson to complain.....not sure if they'll respond although I was very nice in the email ;) Told them how great the updates were for the last two weeks etc....softened them up a bit ;)

Anyway, best wishes to Leni and Sveta.

PS. I have a wisdom tooth coming through and it's been the most painful out of all of them....I think it's bleeding now. I don't have a dentist so do you think Eleni's dad might take a look at it for me ;) It is very sore though  I've resorted to eating a lot of rice because I don't have to chew that!

Well, I'm glad I went to bed because Leni/Sveta lost 6-2, 6-2 to the second seeds. It would have been big to beat the second seeds, but when you play against them with a partner you've never played with before (or not as much) then it's likely you won't do very well.

In a way I'm glad they lost because it means Eleni won't have to worry in the next round about meeting her doubles partner. There might have been the possibility of her thinking, "oh no, I have to play doubles with her tomorrow....if I beat her, she might be in a mood" ;) Now she doen't have to worry about that and can play her heart out :D

C'mon leni....do some damage in singles :bounce:

WELL DONE LENI!

I knew she would do it!

I couldn't wake back up all that early this morning, I finished work at 11pm but couldn't get sleep early enough to be able to wake up at 4.30am to see the scores.

Anyway, I just went straight to wtatour.com and still being half asleep it took the headline, "Kuznetsova Out in LA" a while to register that it was Eleni who played her....it became clear to me suddenly when my eyes adjusted to focus on the picture of Eleni :D

This is the picture at WTAtour.com:

http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/daniilidou_7761_rx.jpg

This is the only part of the article about the match on WTAtour.com:

"Daniilidou Upsets Kuznetsova

LOS ANGELES - No.2 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was eliminated in her first match of the week in Los Angeles on Wednesday, falling to Eleni Daniilidou in second round action at the JPMorgan Chase Open presented by Herbalife.
The No.4-ranked Russian player wasn't able to get her game going during the evening session on Wednesday night, falling to Daniilidou in straight sets, 64 64.

"I need to start practicing more and work on getting my brain together," Kuznetsova said. "I just need to get everything better. Work on getting the ball in.

"I hate losing, so I will have to work much more and practice much more."
___________________________
No words from Eleni in that. :(

From ESPN:

"
CARSON, Calif. -- U.S. Open champion and second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova was upset Wednesday night in the second round of the JPMorgan Chase Open, which earlier lost No. 6 seed Mary Pierce to injury.

Kuznetsova of Russia fell to Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 6-4, 6-4.

"If I keep playing like this, I can go home because I'm not going to win a match," Kuznetsova said afterward. "I can't get everything together."
______________________
Did Sveta really play that badly  Either way, I don't care I win's a win and Eleni had to play it and win it....she was ready and made the shots that counted. So, Leni still in and doing well, Sveta out!

Although i can't find any articles that give a few words by Eleni, I did find this which I was very pleased to read:

"Kuzentsova suffers Greek tragedy

By Matthew Cronin

LOS ANGELES, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova continued her poor run of form in the build up to the defence of her U.S. Open title, falling 6-4 6-4 to Greece's Eleni Daniilidou in the second round of JP Morgan Chase Open on Wednesday.

While the second seed remained mired in worrying slump, her compatriots prospered, with number three Elena Dementieva easing past Australia's Samantha Stosur 6-4 6-3 and fourth seed Nadia Petrova crushing American wild card Jill Craybas 6-3 6-1.

Further down the Russian pecking order, 12th seed Dinara Safina overcame Japanese qualifier Rika Fujiwara 6-2 7-5, while 16th seed Anna Chakvetadze outlasted Iveta Benesova 7-5 4-6 6-4.

Losing her opening match for the second consecutive week, Kuznetsova looked well short of the confidence that carried her to glory in New York.

The 22-year-old Daniilidou served well during the entire contest and matched Kuznetsova stroke-for-stroke in the rallies, securing victory with a booming ace  down the middle. :woohoo:

"It's horrible," said Kuznetsova, who has not won a title in more than 10 months.

"I can't find my game. I don't have confidence and everything comes from the head. If I keep playing like this, I might as well go home."
___________________________

Maybe she has been working on her serve?! To finish with an Ace against a great returner is fantastic and I don't care how bad the articles say Sveta's game was.....there's nothing you can do about great serving!

Well done Eleni - we're really proud of you :D

F*ck, did you see the US Open draw? Lena's 1sr round opponent will be Sharapova :fiery: Damn, I hope Eleni will beat the crap out of her

I was told today while I was at work - someone phoned me to tell me of the draw. I was excited that Lindsay got a VERY good draw! Then when I was told Eleni got Masha, I actually wasn't too worried.....infact the first thing I said was, "Well, Eleni beat Justine at Wimby"....then I got thinking....she keeps beating the high seeded players at these events, she beat Kuzzie the other week and not to mention the fact that she ALMOST beat Maria at Birmingham!

Eleni has the game to beat Maria, and I wouldn't be suprised if there is a first round upset - maybe Eleni can get a few tips of Lindsay of how to beat Maria a la Indian Wells Style: 6/0 6/0 ;)

I think she can do it......I really believe it. Could you imagine how it would have been for me had Lindsay have been the #1 seed......I don't think I would have been able to watch Lindsay vs. Eleni - it's make me bad ;)

It would be a shame if she was injured, because it really does my head in when I read peoples posts when they mention Eleni df JHH at wimby.....they say, "oh but JHH was injured", "she wasn't well" etc....it was a great match and Elnei won fair and square.....but I'd hate for there to be the same tarnish on this match if Eleni won.....

We still don't know what condition Eleni's ankle is in. But let's hope for the best! BTW, I was supposed to fly to NY yestarday but my flight was cancelled after 4h delay. 1 day at the USO lost but I hope I'll fly today.Cheers

Know what you mean RayRob, however a possible win over Sharapova would be a huge boost to both Eleni's ranking and confidence. I think that a player can sometimes feel mor pressure if they know an opponent is possibly injured, so Eleni will need to stay focused and assume Maria will come out all guns blazing.

Agreed....Eleni will have to go out on court as if Maria at her best is there, but she shouldn't let it worry her. to be honest, Maria will have more to worry about, more pressure. 1/ If by then she has lost #1 to Lindsay again, then she knows she has to do well at USO or she will miss another chance as after USO Maria has tons of points to defend! 2/ If her injury isn't 100% she might play cautiously and 3/ She will go out knowing that Eleni is the "Seed Killer" ( ) and that she's beat JHH AND Sveta in the last couple of months.

Eleni on the other hand can relax to some extend. By winning this match Eleni can only gain; confidence, momentum AND 200 bonus points for beating #1 seed in a GS - that'd do wonders for anyones ranking!

Some people are foo-fooing her chances, but she has it in her to do it....depending on how that ankle will be affecting her if at all. People forget that Eleni was once top 15 before those nasty injuries occured! She's already had the 2 big wins this year, i think Masha is a hurdel that Eleni needs to get over - like I say, she almost did it at Birmingham. Maria doesn't like those single-handed backhand slice shots. They stay low and Maria being so tall (any tall player really) will find it tough to generate some power from it.

I'm really looking forward to this match-up!

Pame Eleni :woohoo: you can do it :D

Well, it's not officially stated on the pilo pen tennis website, but it seems that eleni and jen got a walkover in their doubles match as Anna-Lena Groenefeld has hurt her knee.....such a shame for her.

Oh well, I think this means Eleni and Jen through to Semi-final...or is it QF? I ought to check.

I'm back again after a short holiday. Lena has had some tuff draws this year but I'm sure from the way she behaves in the court against the top players that she feels much more passioned when playing against them. That's also what she said in an interview a few weeks ago. I'm too exited about this match although I think I'm gonna miss it because I have to travel next week. Lena came too close in Birmingham and this time she has a great chance which I'm sure she is not gonna waste without fighting, actually I think she is not gonna waste it at all.

that's interesting what she said about playing the top players....where was that interview? What were her words regarding that?

I too am feeling really excited at the thought of the match....mainly because I really think she can do it! Unfortunately I wasn't there for the match against Masha in B'ham - I was there the day before so just missed it  :bigcry: But when I was there for the final there seemed to be a buzz about the match from what I overheard people saying who must have seen it.

I'm pretty sure that it'll be a match that'll be shown on TV, perhaps the first night match - so being in the UK, I hope henman isn't schedueled at the same time. Having said that, my friend is going on holiday and I'm looking after her cat, she has Sky Digital and so I can choose the matches :yeah: So, either way, i guess I'll be watching it :D :bounce:

As I type this, Eleni and Jen are having a good, close hard-fought doubles match....Eleni/jen's service games seems to be being held quite easily - which is a good sign :D

hopefully they'll be some good news to report soon.

:( Sorry, I don't have good news to report but Jen/Eleni lost their doubles match, but they were up against one of the top seeds and I'm actually suprised at how well they hung in....especially since they had to qualify! I think they lost 5/7, 6/3, 6/4....but their service games were being held quite quickly so hopefully that's a good sign.

I think it was their best run on the US hard courts this season - Well done girls :yeah:

Hopefully, this has been a good warm-up for Eleni ready for the USO :D Off to NY now....get some practice in ;)

Thanks for that :D

Sorry to report that Eleni lost 6-1, 6-1. I watched the match and that score (particularly in the first set) doesn't really give justice to how well Leni had played! Eleni could have just as easily been up 3-0 in the first. However, it was on these big points that Eleni couldn't convert; either she threw in a double fault ( Thank serve!?!?), hit an error or Sharapova destroyed a lame second serve. The commentators for the match on Sky Sports counted how many game points Eleni has missed (including her own game points and break points). To give you an idea, Eleni never converted a game point until her 11th opportunity!

With all the negative points aside, Eleni played a fantastic first set! She did a couple of awesome single-handed backhands down the line and cross court passing Maria. Eleni's UE's were high, but beleive me 75% of those shots missed only by millimeters.....even on some I was like  "WHAT!?! That was surely a winning shot!" *shouts at TV at 1.15am* :o

Bless, when she won that game she applauded herself and threw her arms in the air - celebration with the crowd for a minute or so....that was sweet :D

At the end of the first set Leni went and changed for a blue top to a white one but she didn't seem with it in the second set.

Most of her service games in the second set seemed to go a lot easier than they did in the first. I think she lost some fight in her - not too sure, but surely she must have been aannoyed with how bad her serve was!

Eleni also had to put up with the shouts of, "We Love You Maria!" which usually came either as Eleni was about to serve her 1st serve or between Eleni's first and second serve - I was so mad :fiery: And before the start of crucial points in the second game of the first set, Eleni was serving and that stupid 'Cyclops' machine beeped once mid-service motion and second serve and as Leni went to serve again it beeped. Eleni certainly lost concentration or focus because she thought she'd been awarded "first serve" again after the incidents, due to the fact that she couldn't remember if she'd served a first serve as the machine went off so many times.

I'm actually proud of Eleni, she played out of her skin in that first set, and it at least deserved to be closer....6-3 or 6-4. If she could have pulled it off it would have been a great win, but it wasn't to be this time.

Even the commentators in the UK had never seen Eleni play before :retard: which makes me wonder if they really are qualified to report on tennis! Anyway, if they have any credibility at all, then they were saying some lovely things about Eleni. They were amazed by her back hand - likening it to JHH or Amilie (when it was firing) - and kept praising her for all the huge wins she's had in the past (I think they mentioned 5 or 6 former #1's that Eleni had beaten in her time). The commentators, like us were a bit frustrated with Eleni's serve.....but you can't have everything - ask Elena Dementieva ;)

One last thing, I was very dissapointed that she didn't attempt to volley too much. I mean her WTA profile said she's a serve vollier - that didn't even happen once in the whole match! In fact, even when she could get into the net she chose not to and tried to lug it out from the baseline - which is where Maria will win because she could run it out forever! At 4-1 in the second set, Eleni did tr the vollying but it really was to late, they were half hearted attempts where Maria just blast past once, and two amazing lobs to finish the match off.

If Eleni can learn anything from this match, it's the following:

1. Get a better serve ;) the problem is the whole service action. She lands awkward on her feet - which could be how she twisted her ankle at LA and also the problem she gets with the shin.

2. She's a good vollier, but she doesn't use it very often. Cut off the hard baseline players by following some big ground strokes in, do a half volly or even a stop volly - someone so tall would find it difficult to run any down.

3. Learn to lob! Seriously. Although Eleni did a few glorious passing shots worth of high honour against Maria, there comes a time in a match where it won't work all the time. Suprise the opponant by attempting some killer topspin lobs - Maria showed in the last two points how sure shots work against a tall player ;)

I personally think that those are the 3 main things Eleni needs to concerntrate on in order to progress futher. I know she can do it - I just look forward to the Fall season and hopefully see her in full swing :D

I remember 2 years ago, Alicia Molik was in a similar career position as Eleni is now and she really worked hard to become a Grand Slam contender - and she did come out of no where. Before this ear infection, Alicia had an awesome 18 months.....hopefully Eleni will get something done about that serve - it really isn't too late and you don't have to settle for what you have....improvements are important :)

Well done Eleni - you did put up a good fight, that score doesn't do you any justice at all :bounce:

Hopefully we'll see her in doubles :bounce:

I also lost sleep last night to watch Eleni ;) Too bad she could not push Sharapova more.I was slightly disappointed by the score.I agree with you her serve needs a lot of work. She's a big girl, she could use her serve as a weapon and its a liability sometimes.

All in all I'm glad because I got to see her on tv :hearts: Let's hope for better draws in her next tourneys. She was clearly unlucky.

Well, i was so busy at work that I couldn't check any scores so I had to wait until i got home to find that Eleni and Jen lost their first round

I think it was 2 and 3 and was expecting it to be a little closer since they played them a couple of weeks ago and it was close 3 sets.

It's anoying the way Eleni isn't getting some good draws as she keeps being drawn against seeded player, both in singles AND doubles. Hopefully the tide will change for her in the fall season and perhaps right now she can go home and get a little rest.

Also, I wonder if her singles ranking will drop since she was defending 4th round points.....hope it won't drop too much.

Rest up Leni - probably got a big fall schedule :wavey:

Well I don't know if the report is that great, I think that pics are better ;) I landed in NY on August 25th (was supposed to be there a day before but my flight was cancelled) but didn't get to see Eleni until August 29th  I was looking for her through the practice courts inside and outside, in the park but I had no luck (in comparison, last year and two years ago I met her a number of times...). So on Monday August 29th I finally saw her practice, unfortunately she practiced on the courts P1-P4 next to the President's Gate which I hate 'cause you can hardly see anything through the fence, I had to stick my camera in the hole in the fence to take pics, very uncomfortable...Eleni was in a great mood, she smiled a lot and joked with Judith and Lisa. Unfortunately Sharapova began practice next to her a few minutes later and I think Eleni wasn't very happy about that ;) I wasn't happy either as fans gathered around the court and when Lena, Jud and Lisa were leaving the practice court, the crowd was so big that I wasn't able to get close to them and I was pretty upset about that 'cause I wanted to say hi to them.
Here are the pics from the warming up:

I had a ticket for Eleni's Night Session match vs Sharapova but my seat was almost on top of the stadium so I hardly see anything. I was cheering for Eleni, shouting pame, ela and c'mon eleni but it didn't help much. I think she didn't play bad, especially the 1st set was very close although the score suggested it was an easy win for Sharapova. I'm sure that if Lena took a chance she had in Maria's opening game, it would be a whole different match...I don'tknow if you noticed that after the 1st set she changed her clothes completely as if wanted to start it all over again. It wasn't meant to be
The next day I came on courts a bit late and met a friend of mine next to the outside practice courts, in the park. We started talking about Eleni and all of a sudden I realized Jud and Lena were statnding a few metres from me. They must have just finished the training but somehow I didn't see them leave the courts. Before I could make decision whether to come up to them or not (I didn't know what mood Eleni was in) they jumped on the melex car. And that was when Judoth saw me, she waved to me and said "hi", Eleni turned around to see what's going on and she smiled and said "hi" as well but the car was already driving away...I didn't get to see them again until Lena's doubles match. My friend saw her practicing though and even my brother saw her the other evening walking around the courts wearing jeans and casual clothes (sight). As I said earlier, I had no luck this year at all...
The doubles match was the last time I saw Lena, at least I talked to Judith and Lisa but not Eleni. I asked Judith after the match if there was a chance I could talk to Eleni before they leave and she said yes. But again the luck was not on my side and in the end we never had a chance to talk  I don't even have a pic with her from this year, neither from Warsaw nor from NY  And as I expected more from this trip, I'm disappointed all went the way it went, on and off court.
Here are the pics from the doubles match:

P.S. Raymond and Stosur are in the doubles final, Sharapova lost to Kimmi in the semifinal so Lena lost to inform players both in doubles in singles, it's a little cheer up, I guess

:D Thanks for the report - sorry it didn't go as you expected it... Hopefully you'll see her next year at Warsaw....and hopefully I'll see her again at Birmingham :bounce:

You got some great photos though.....thanks for sharing them :D

you are right, Leni did lose to in-form players this year. I did mention in an earlier report of Leni's singles match against Maria that it was closer than the score suggested. I did actually see the match live on TV, I also recorded the match on video - and really it was neck and neck in the first set regardless of what the score said. If Leni had gone up 3-love it would have been a different story ;)

However, it appears Leni begins her Fall schedule in Slovenia on sept 19th (her birthday) so hopefully she will get some confidence, enjoy herself and win some matches back :D

Pame Eleni!

I agree, Leni's best colour is blue....I did prefer the dark blue colour she wore in her match against Maria :D

Here are a couple of fun pictures from her first round match in the darker blue colour:

I'm really looking forward to the beginning of that tournament in Slovenia... I hope that Eleni will finally get a good draw!
