LONDON (AFP) - England football captain David Beckham and his pop star wife Victoria are to sue the News of the World over a story claiming their marriage was in trouble, their lawyers said.

The lawyers said the article "Posh and Becks on Rocks" was untrue and "caused considerable distress to both the couple and the family."

In a statement, the lawyers said the newspaper had not taken up an opportunity to apologize for the story.

The News of the World has not commented on the announcement.

"David and Victoria Beckham today initiated legal proceedings against the News of the World in relation to an article published on Sunday 12 September 2004.

"The News of the World was given the opportunity to provide an apology but have chosen not to respond to the couple's request," said their lawyers in a statement.

Beckham revealed in August that Victoria was pregnant with their third child and also that she and their two sons Brooklyn and Romeo had finally made the move from England to live with him in the Spanish capital.

Beckham moved from Manchester United to Madrid in July 2003 while his family remained in England which allegedly caused friction between the two of them.

The marriage hit a rocky patch earlier this year after reports the football star had an affair with his former personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, who went on to sell her story to the media.

the news of the world are always printing stuff about them so Im not surprised they ve decided to sue , the only thing that makes me believe David did have an affair was that straight after they said they would be sueing the paper but nothing ever happened and those claims were alot worse than these

LONDON — Real Madrid soccer star David Beckham and his wife Victoria are taking legal action against a British tabloid newspaper over an article which claimed their marriage was in trouble, their lawyers said Tuesday.

The lawyers said the article in the News of the World newspaper, headlined "Posh and Becks on Rocks," was untrue and caused the couple "considerable distress."

"David and Victoria Beckham today initiated legal proceedings against the News of the World in relation to an article published on Sunday, 12 September 2004," said a statement, issued by the law firm Harbottle and Lewis.

"The News of the World was given the opportunity to provide an apology but have chosen not to respond to the couple's request."

The newspaper declined to comment.

The couple have two children, Brooklyn, 5, and Romeo, 2, and are expecting their third child in March.

The marriage of Britain's No. 1 celebrity couple hit the headlines in April when a former personal aide, Rebecca Loos, claimed she and David Beckham had had a 10-day affair. He dismissed the claim as "ludicrous" and "absurd."

Yes but are they suing about the 'Marriage on the Rocks' story from September rather than Rebecca's claims of an affair which were printed months earlier and we can take a guess on what that means....

TODAY:

DAVID Beckham has denied his marriage to Victoria is in trouble - vowing: "There's no way in the world that we will ever split up."

The England soccer captain insists in a new interview: "Victoria and I didn't get married to be together for a few years and then split up.

"We married for life and that's the most important thing."

Becks, 29, rubbished rumours that all was not well with their relationship.

The Real Madrid ace said he and Victoria, 30, who is expecting their third child, were strong enough to withstand the criticism hurled at them.

He said: "We can take it all."

Becks also told of the pressures of fame. The ex-Manchester United idol said: "I've had so many stalkers.

"Funny stalkers, scary stalkers, every kind of stalker. One woman turned up at my place every day for about two weeks and just left different pairs of underpants for me in the mailbox.

"Luckily, they were always brand new."

well like shit and stink, the becks come hand in hand
he needs her cuz...well...he's not that bright, and she needs him for cool points.
they also have 2 children with number three coming on the way
raquel is right, if they didn't sue over the affair allegations which were supposedly "so false" we can only presume this couple is not so golden after all.
i just think that if they were so god darn happy, how would an article spoil that? if i needed to be in the spotlight like they do, and they printed stories that my relationship is on the brink of being over, when it's not, i'd just laugh it off. "tabloids" have connotations with being false, but it seems to me the NotW have got most things spot on with those two recently

More celebs need to sue these papers. If no one sues them, it just encourages them even more. If they have the money why not?

As long as David plays soccer they will stay together (to create perfect image) - same goes for the talentless cow - she will be only known as ex Spicey and ex wife of David Beckham!

Hummmm, if this kinda thing actually was allowed, then couldn't we virtually sue other posters on this message board for posting things about us that were untrue and caused emotional duress and harm?

I volunteer for jury duty in WTAworld.com Court  Or I can act as a mean bitchy Judge Judy. :hehehe:
