:wavey: hey all you NFL fans out there...if there is any on this board:p

I think I remember having an NFL thread here last year, but it hasn't been bumped, so I figured I'd make my own

Its almost the end of week two now, but better late then never eh?

Discuss your favorite teams and games, but please don't be disrespectful:)

I just wanna say that I'm REALLY sure my team (Miami) will go 0-16 this year. Which would be hot for a draft choice, except they don't get a R1 draft choice next year. :tape: Yes, we're sooooooo gonna suck this year. But I'm ok with this.

I am a big Dallas Cowboys fan!! They have played fairly decent the last couple of games. I think they have some problems on defense. They have been bad about turning the ball over on offense. I think that once they correct a few of their glitches, they will be a force to reckon with. :) :)

I'm a New England Patriots fan.

I'm still searching for a 2nd team to support. It used to be the Bengals, and before that, the Gruden-less Bucs (I loathe Gruden for some reason).

Can someone help me choose a seemingly hopeless, non-AFC East to also support?

Pittsburgh at Miami Game Starts @ 1:00 PM ET Wooohooo.... 0-3 here we come.
Random thought - there are 28 running backs in the NFL with MORE yards than the entire DOLPHINS team. :tape: That's hot.

I must say we thought about winning Sun night, but ya know that powerhouse Cinicinnati team.... tape:

Yes, I think some QBs have more rushing yards than the whole MIA team.
But hey, we busted out for 25 whole rushing yards on the Bungles asses. Yes, 25. No typo. :tape: And 65 big ones in week one.

I was born in Philadelphia so I'm an Eagles fan, always have been, always will be. I don't really support another team, but I do like to root against the other NFC East teams.

The Eagles vs. Lions should be a good game tomorrow. I really like Roy Williams and Kevin Jones, but I think the Eagles pressure will get to Harrington.

Wouldn't be surprised if the game was close, but I expect the Eagles to win (not that I'm biased or anything;) ).

i don't know how old all of you are, but i'm curious if someone can verify this...

dad went to some sooners games in the '70s when switzer coached and he said they were so good that the scrubs always played in the second half, and the starters would stand around eating hotdogs and signing autographs. and they never threw the ball, they could run for half-a-hundred.

mom says it's bullshit, and i guess she'd know as she went to OSU and saw the OU/OSU ass-whippings in person...but that story is too good to NOT be true

This is one of the rare times I'm going to root for the Big-Tuna and Dallas.

There's a lot of Washington fans I know that are a pain ever year with their over-hyped Redskins.

BTW - I'm still looking for a secondary team to support. Thinking about JAX or N'Orleans (still thinking about that insane TD they scored last season, then missed the extra point :o ).I think the Jags are a solid choice. Leftwich will only get better with experience and their defense is solid. They should make the playoffs unless Fred Taylor gets hurt (which could easily happen). Have you considered Baltimore?

i agree, about the jags, leftwich is pretty good, gotta establish his feet, he'll get better as the season goes on

baltimore has a killer d, sometimes i think ray lewis shows off a bit too much, but i gotta hand it to him, he fills those holes, one good thing about their d, is that they close the gaps quick if they appear

this season is looking to be really promising

i don't know what is with the chiefs though:scratch: they were supposed to go all the way to the super bowl weren't they? well one think i can say is that priest holmes does his job:p

Baltimore won the Superbowl four years ago...which is too recent for me. They also weren't that bad last year and made the playoffs.

My #1 team is the Pats...but it gets a bit boring cheering for a team that you never think is going to lose - no matter how shakey they might look.

I just find the whole sport a bit more exciting if I can follow a team that's really evolving or didn't do so much the year before.

The best part of that stat is that Dallas has had some of their worst teams ever in about 10 or those victories.  :tape:

My Dallas Cowboy priorities

1. Beat the Redskins twice

2. Have a better record than the 49ers when the season is over.

3. Make the playoffs.

4. Win the Superbowl.

If the Cowboys have done 2 out of 4 of these, its a good season.

3 out of 4 is a great season.

I had been looking for this thread. Every time I stopped in the forum, it was tough to find.

Getting caught up on the season to date:

Got the Green Bay- Dallas game at 4 yesterday. My 2-- Green Bay has definitely turned things around. They are looking like a playoff team. Next Sunday, they get to determine our next President. :)

Conversely, Parcells seems to be holding back the Cowboys. He's concerned about his secondary because half the starters are out. So he has his defense playing softer to protect them. However, with no pressure on the opposing QB, it doesn't matter who is back there, someone will eventually get open. By putting too mch emphasis on trying to protect the young DB's, and not enough on harassing QB's, they're giving up the plays anyway. Likewise, the change from Carter to Testaverde has hurt the offense. Not only do they have to keep more people in to protect Vinnie, but they're missing those yards and first downs Carter got with his scrambles.

It was seeing Favre yesterday that made me think of Carter last year. The two are not dissimilar in their makeup. Both have the instinct to turn it loose and "make something happen". This can result in a lot of mistakes as well as a lot of big plays. Favre has built a career on it, usually with the good outweighing the bad. Carter showed flashes of that before Parcells, compiling a near-.500 record on a 10-22 team. Last year, Parcells was so afraid of the mistakes, he wouldn't turn Carter loose. I can't help but think that had Favre been under Parcells during his formative years, he'd never have developed.

Saw the Boys' last couple of games, vs. Pittsburgh and NY, both of which they should have won, but gave away. (We get almost all the Dallas games here.) Ironically, the one time Parcells should have been ultra-conservative and wasn't, it cost them the game. They should be sitting at 4-2 at worst. Now they're in that "loser's rut" where they keep waiting for something to go wrong.

Philly and New England were the pre-season Super Bowl favorites, and I don't see anything to change that. But then, Philly has looked like a Super Bowl team each of the past couple of regular seasons, only to come up short in the playoffs. They are approaching a make-or-break situation. Another failure to reach the Super Bowl this year could be devastating.

Speaking of Philly and New England, they are the last remaining unbeatens. So they'll be stalked by the players from the '72 Dolphins, waiting for them to lose. That's getting tiresome. I almost hope both teams continue unbeaten until meeting in the Super Bowl, just to put an end to that nonsense.

Old man Emmitt Smith just had his second 100-yard game of the year, to set a new career record. And as the season nears the halfway point, he's about 85 yards ahead of the pace for another 1000 yard season. Not bad for a 35-year-old back. His old team could use him now.

Very impressed by the kid in Pittsburgh. I think Maddox can kiss his job goodbye.

Damn, Miami ruined their "perfect" season. Have you ever noticed when there's a wire story on the Dolphins, they seem to run that same file photo of Wannestadt? Whether it's Williams retiring, or their top receiver getting hurt, they always run that pic of the coach with an expression that seems to be saying "Yep, we're screwed."

The Panthers won a lot of close games last year, and were relatively fortunate with injuries. Not so this year. In the parity of Pete Rozelle's wet dream, only a couple of sprains, strains, or fractures seperate the attic from the basement.

Titans... whu? Bengals... ?? Jacksonville... looking good.

Seattle...made some improvements, but those uniforms suck! Bring back the old ones.

So what have y'all been saying about my Pittsburg Steelers in this thread?

Go Pittsburgh!

I hate that the afc is on fox or cbs or whoever instead of NBC....when the afc was on NBC I got to see Pittsburgh play a lot now I barely ever get to see them play. :(

but it's weird that there are 3 teams with 11-1 records....I hope my team (the Pittsburgh Steelers :D ) are the ones to go all the way. :yeah:

How about that wild MNF game? I thought Dallas had it when they went up by 15. Then I thought Seattle had it when they retook the lead, and was sure they clinched it when they went up by 10 with just over 2 minutes to play. But things got wilder yet.

It looks like the running game problems in big D may be solved, as long as this kid stays healthy. (They might want to cut back his carries to under 30 a game.) Just imagine where they'd be had he not gotten injured.

And have you ever seen a better executed onside kick?

I'm glad the Rams won because I don't like Holmgren (how can one guy lose so much and still get his ass kissed by commentators - if he's such an offensive genius, why was Favre pulling every game out of his ass at the last minutes way back when?)

Of course I'll probably root against the Rams next week (well if they play the Eagles I might root for them  )

I actually like the Jets a little so I want them to win as well.

Tomorrow, I'm torn because I hate that they're changing rules and sending warnings to John Lynch - because the league wants their Golden Boy Manning to win - but I hate the Broncos so I win either way.

How the heck do you miss a field goal to the right while kicking from the right hashmark? The sucker's in line with the upright. You have to kick it the other way.

Hey, Kiwi, what do you think the 'Boys should do with their 1st round picks? I say get a big, run-stuffing, disruptive DT with one ( la Grady Jackson), and take whatever impact player is available with the other. They should plug the other holes primarily through FA. (A veteran S, perhaps a G and a CB.) Rumor has it that the OL will be shuffled. Remember when Adams came out of college, and reportedly had a hearing problem in one ear (right?). Would explain the false starts. Supposedly, he's better suited to RT. And with Rogers having trouble switching from LT to RT, he may be returned to his college position, with Adams moving to the right side. That would give the 'Boys a potentially solid line of Rogers, Allen, Johnson, Noll/Peterman/FA, Adams. And have you noticed that Julius Jones (and by extension, the offense) was most productive in the games when Anderson was inactive, and Jones was the 3rd down back. With Jones, they had the threat of running for a first down, even on 3rd and 5, 6, 7.

2 other 'Boys-related notes: (1) I can't believe that "Vinnterception" was named 1st-alternate to the Pro Bowl. (2) Did you notice at the end of the 2 Dallas-Washington games, Joe Gibbs gave Parcells the "stealth" handshake, perhaps making contact for a nanosecond, and not even bothering to look at him. What's up with that?

Teams that probably should have been there? Carolina and Buffalo.

Is Leinart on his way to the Niners? Where will Warner wind up? Will Parcells bring in Jumbo Elliot and Harry Carson to play for him?

Did anyone catch Moss' explanation for leaving the field early last week? Weak, dude.

Predictions for tomorrow: Pack/Vikes will not be 34-31, but Pack will win again. Colts will win handily at home.

Next week, all 4 bye teams win except-- Atlanta, which will fall to the Packers. Championship game predictions (to be revised in the event that any of the playoff teams get it wrong and screw up my predictions :) ) : New England topples Pittsburgh, and Green Bay extends Philly's CG hex. It was a really tough break for them to lose T.O. But, on the positive sign for us non-Eagle fans, we were spared the sight of Andy Reid in a catsuit.

Jan 9th, 2005, 04:29 PM
First of all, I believe you're 100% on target about Dallas' offensive line shake up. :yeah:

I believe the Boys will draft a deep threat wide reciever and the biggest run stuffing Defensive Lineman they can get their hands on with the top two picks. The order will probably be dependant on if the Michigan WR or Mike Williams drops to the #11 spot. They'll probably go defense first if they don't have a shot at a "top 10 choice" reciever.

My head is still spinning over the Vinnie situation, but it appears that The Tuna thinks if Terry Glenn was healthy all year and our defense had shown up; the Cowboys would have been good enough to do it all. Spread the field and let Vinnie pick the defense apart while Julius Jones keeps the defense "honest".

I don't agree with this.

The most important thing is the defense has to pressure the QB all game next season. We need a competent veteran CB, a veteran Safety (maybe even an old Cowboy still in the league :tape: ), I suspect if we are making the switch to a 3-4 defense next season we will need two veteran LBs one inside and one outside (Steeler second stringers will do nicely if they're available).

I think with the exception of Greg Ellis, any of our :tape: pass rushing Defensive Ends who can't fake it at outside LB will be playing elsewhere next year. Other than Roy Williams none of our safeties should have any job security. I think we have some young talent at the CB but they aren't ready to do the job now and could use a veteran Role Model. Not a big star but a solid vet. I think the roster we have on offense (if healthy) is a solid one if either Terry Glenn plays all year or even better if a new tall speedy young wide receiver takes over the deep threat role of Terry Glenn. With Witten, Julius and Keyshawn the offense has something to build on...still need The QB :tape:

They must draft a Big Running Back (3rd/4th round), a Power Back so they don't kill Julius Jones (already the best player on the team :tape: )

The sad thing is that they are setting the table based on Vinnie playing like he did the first 4 games. But I blame at least 3 of our losses directly of Vinnie throwing stupid passes that Q. Carter wouldn't have thrown (or fumbling away victory against the Steelers  ) so I have no faith in Vinnie as a Superbowl QB.

I just hope the Drew Henson thing works out next season

What the Favre happened to the Packers? I tuned in halfway through the 4th quarter, and couldn't believe the score. And apparently I missed Moss' "coming out party".

I'll have to revise my predictions. I can now see a sweep by the home teams in the divisional round, although the Colts looked damn good. I'd say they have the best chance of upset.

Who will take the Niners job? Carroll, or a current NFL assistant, or a former NFL coach? I'd say Carroll stays put (he has a cushy gig). From the sound of things, they want a "name", so it'll be either a former coach, or a really big name assistant.

Still, it's not nearly enough for a team that finally feels ready to win the prize that has eluded one of the NFL's most successful franchises for a quarter-century.

The Steelers take high expectations into Saturday's tricky divisional playoff game against the New York Jets (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/ap/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_jets_steelers/13995096/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22New%20York%20Jets%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw)), who weren't supposed to make it this far after losing three of four only to upset San Diego 20-17 in overtime last week.

For all their doubters, the Jets suspected they'd be back in Pittsburgh, believing the Steelers were more than fortunate to have escaped with a Jerome Bettis-led 17-6 victory Dec. 12.

Defensive end Shaun Ellis predicted a win if the Jets returned, saying, "They are a great team but, if we come back here, I really think we'll beat them."

The Jets' confident talk reflects what the Steelers are seeing and hearing: they are one of only four NFL teams in 26 years to go 15-1, but they're hardly everybody's pick to win the Super Bowl.

With the Colts-Patriots playoff rematch Sunday attracting so much attention, it almost seems the Steelers are the side attraction.

"I guess people aren't as interested in us as they are Peyton (Manning) vs. the Patriots," Steelers receiver Antwaan Randle El said. "People can not talk about us all the way to the Super Bowl."

Maybe there's hesitancy to view the Steelers as the Super Bowl favorite because no team has reached the Super Bowl with a rookie quarterback, much less won one, as they are asking Ben Roethlisberger to do. Maybe it's because those consecutive midseason wins over the Patriots and Eagles were so long ago, it's forgotten how significant they seemed at the time.

Or maybe it's those three AFC championship game losses at home in the last 10 years, all when the Steelers were favored and all with Bill Cowher as coach.

"We'll find out," Cowher said, asked if this is the best Steelers team since the franchise won four Super Bowls in six seasons from 1974-79. "We've put ourselves in a good position but we recognize now we're involved in one-game seasons."

The Jets pulled off a surprise by not being one and done in San Diego. Chad Pennington showed the arm strength and resiliency he lacked while throwing three interceptions in Pittsburgh last month, going 23 of 33 for 279 yards and two touchdowns.

Pennington missed practice Wednesday with the flu, but expects to be fine Saturday. He endured several weeks of under-the-microscope scrutiny after his poor play in Pittsburgh, leading to some verbal jousting with the media that quieted after the Chargers game.

"As far as proving anything to anyone, I quit doing that a long time ago," Pennington said. "There are always going to be critics and doubters. You've got to trust yourself and not second-guess yourself. When you start doing that, that's when you play hesitant and you look like you don't have arm strength."

Pennington hasn't convinced the Steelers he's recovered from the rotator cuff injury that sidelined him for three weeks. Linebacker James Farrior said, "I don't think his arm is that strong. I think the injury's bothering him a little bit."

Yet for all the questioning of Pennington's arm and Roethlisberger's lack of experience, the winner will probably have the stronger ground game. Pittsburgh was No. 2 and New York No. 3 in rushing, and each has one of the NFL's top five career rushers: the Jets' No. 4 Curtis Martin and the Steelers' No. 5 Bettis.

Last month, Pittsburgh's league-leading defense held Martin, the NFL rushing champion, to 72 yards on 24 carries and backup LaMont Jordan to 10 yards on three carries, buying time for the offense before Bettis threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers may get a boost from wide receiver Plaxico Burress' return after he missed five of six games with a sore hamstring. But the Jets also may be without defensive end John Abraham (sore knee) and his 9 1/2 sacks for a sixth consecutive game.

Jets coach Herman Edwards dismisses talk the pressure's all on Pittsburgh and his team is enjoying a gift game it never expected to play.

"There's always pressure on this football team because I'm going to create it," he said. "You're playing with house money? That's a bunch of talk. This is the playoffs. There is pressure."

AP - Jan 15, 8:35 pm EST
More Photos (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/gallery)PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jeff Reed (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6290/) did what Doug Brien (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/2935/) twice couldn't do, and imperfect but still unbeaten rookie Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6770/) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/pit/) saved a season that seemed to be lost.

Reed made a 33-yard field goal, his 19th successful conversion in a row, and the Steelers somehow beat the resilient New York Jets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyj/) 20-17 in overtime Saturday in a remarkable divisional playoff game filled with wild swings in momentum and emotion.

Roethlisberger overcame two huge mistakes -- an interception for a touchdown and another that appeared to doom the Steelers late in the fourth quarter -- to lead a decisive drive that began at their own 13 and sent Pittsburgh to next Sunday's AFC championship game against New England or Indianapolis.

The loss will go down as one of the most excruciating in the Jets' star-crossed history, with Brien missing not one but two makable field-goal tries in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. The misses were doubly stunning disappointments for a gutty team on the verge of its biggest upset since Broadway Joe's guaranteed win over the Colts in the January 1969 Super Bowl.

Brien's 47-yarder with 1:58 remaining hit the goal post, but Roethlisberger gave the Jets the ball right back when his off-line throw was intercepted by David Barrett (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5131/) -- just the kind of mistake rookie quarterbacks are supposed to make in the playoffs, but Big Ben had rarely made during his 13-0 rookie season. The Jets then drove cautiously from the Steelers 37 to the 25, giving Brien a 43-yarder to win it on the final play of regulation.

But the kick sailed far to the left, not even close, and the given-a-reprieve Steelers danced joyously on their sidelines -- Roethlisberger right in the middle.

Brien's 28-yarder in overtime beat San Diego last week -- yes, by the same 20-17 score -- and he hit a 42-yarder to halt Pittsburgh's early momentum and make it 10-3 Pittsburgh early in the second quarter. He was 24-of-29 for the season.

The Jets became the first NFL team to play three consecutive overtime games, including their regular-season ending loss in St. Louis. They dropped to 0-7 in Pittsburgh and 2-16 all-time against the Steelers.

The Steelers won their team-record 15th in a row to advance to the AFC title game for the fifth time since the 1994 season -- they are 1-3 under coach Bill Cowher there -- but the Jets will wonder for years why they're not going.

The Jets turned two long touchdown returns, Santana Moss (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5463/)' 75-yard punt return and Reggie Tongue (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3608/)'s 86-yard interception, into 17 consecutive points and a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter that stunned nearly everyone in a jammed Heinz Field except the Jets.

After the Jets' 17-6 loss there Dec. 12, defensive lineman Shaun Ellis (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5041/) predicted they would win if they returned to Pittsburgh in the playoffs. Last week, it didn't appear anyone in the Steelers' locker room took him seriously.

When Jerome Bettis (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/2354/) fumbled at the Jets 24 early in the fourth quarter -- his first fumble in 353 carries or receptions this season -- Ellis' confidence was looking like more than empty talk. Shades of Broadway Joe Namath?

But just when it appeared as if Roethlisberger was being exposed for the rookie he is, appearing confused at times by the Jets' ever-changing blitzes and fronts, he put together just the kind of drive that has marked the most remarkable season by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.

He finished 17-of-30 for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

That drive was reminiscent of last month's game, when the Jets held the Steelers to a 3-all tie for three quarters before the Steelers wore them down with two Bettis-led scoring drives in the fourth.

Bettis outgained the Jets' Curtis Martin (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3164/) 101-77 in a matchup of two of the NFL's top five career rushers. Bettis has rushed for at least 100 yards in all seven starts this season.

The Steelers, who haven't lost a divisional playoff game in seven tries under Cowher since 1993 and are 9-0 at home this season, surged to the 10-0 lead in the first quarter after Troy Polamalu (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6352/)'s interception of Chad Pennington (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5047/)'s pass. Bettis powered in from the 3 on the fifth play of the 25-yard drive following Roethlisberger's 9-yard completion to Ward.

Reed had given Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead with a 45-yard field goal.

The Jets appeared to be in big trouble then, down 10 points on the road to a Steelers team riding a franchise-record winning streak and coming off its first 15-1 season. The Jets scored only six points in each of their last two regular-season games against the Steelers, including last month's loss, and hadn't scored more than 10 points against them since 1988.

But Pennington, whose arm strength and decision-making were questioned following his three-interception performance in Pittsburgh on Dec. 12, then showed the same resiliency he had in San Diego.

Despite being sacked twice on the drive and dodging a strong rush on nearly every play from Pittsburgh's top-ranked defense, Pennington (21-of-33 for 182 yards and an interception) halted Pittsburgh's momentum by hitting Anthony Becht (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5056/) for 13 yards and Justin McCareins (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5572/) for 11 to set up Brien's 42-yard field goal early in the second quarter. With the Jets' defense effectively controlling Roethlisberger, just as it did for three quarters last month, Moss found a seam down the sideline and sailed to his tying 75-yard return with three minutes left in the half. The first punt return score in Jets postseason history was a big jolt to the Steelers' normally strong special teams, who allowed only one punt return longer than 10 yards in their last 11 games.

Lets go Colts!

Tomorrow I vow to sit in front of the TV and watch the entire game...:p

my teacher has a "bet" with one of my friends, if the colts win she gets a chicken biscuit from bojangles and he has to wear a patriots sweatshirt to school:p... and if he wins she buys him a drink (non-alcoholic):p

I think if the Colts played like they played against the Broncos they'll be looking right good

Any one smell an upset?
I'll be upset if they don't win:p so i guess either way its an upset:p (ok that was cheesy, i'm tired and i'm just rambling on so i'm going to stop now and go to sleep)

goodnight all

In the last 24 years the only thing the Steelers know about Super Bowls is losing. :p

They would consider a loss to Mr. Vick a successful season, they've come a long way this year.

Anyone care to conjecture what will happen to the Pats after Weis and Crennell leave? Will they continue to chug along? Or will they meet the same fate as the Giants teams from the 50's, who lost both of their coordinators (OC Vince Lombardi and DC Tom Landry), and began a slide downhill.

Bill Belichek (sp) has a rep for having a very bad and abbrasive personality.

Everyone hated him in Cleveland because he's one of those heartless, football genius types who only sees X's and O's and not players with families and lives outside of football.

He rewards his best players with pay cuts (and roster cuts if they don't take the pay cuts). I don't know if those two coordinators are the guys who help the players to buy into this but if Weis and Crennell are those guys...

...the Pats will fall apart in a couple of years.

I'll be rooting for the hated Eagles just so the Pats can't tie my Cowboys in the 3 Superbowls in 4 years stat. :p

Delayed threats? :p :p :p

That trash talk is waaaaaaaaaay past its expiration date. :hehehe:

Don't worry, I'm sure I'll give you plenty of new reasons to give me the ":armed:" response in the near future.

Its my nature.
