Tempted to say Maria, because she only has ONE big result( granted it is really big) + only two top 10 wins...but that Wimbledon title is huge. I can´t say. Elena D?! Does she have a title this year?!

OK then I'm really torn between Maria and Elena D. Both really talented but they do get alot of credit and attention for being amazing players when they're both very inconsistent.

I dont think anyone who ever reaches the top 10 is overrated.....Do you have any idea how difficult it is to make it to the top.....Who ever is in the top ten is very deserving and consistent to be there....

It has to be between Sveta and Maria IMO. The other have all been Top players for over a year.

Elena D can be inconsistent but from RG onwards, her results have been pretty consistent except Wimby (pretty explainable) and her loss to Dulko. Plus the girl reached 2 GS finals in ONE year. Definitely Top 10 material and many Top 10 wins this year (something she couldn't do in the past).

Maria is hyped a lot, she does have a great game... for grass. Where she is extended into rallies, she can be effectively manouvered out of position. And you can begin to break down her power game. A serve, BH and FH are very important, but so is speed and variety in today's tennis. I think too many people expect her to win multiple Slams and become a No. 1. Let her grow.

Sveta. She played awesome in the final. But it was just a big serve and big forehand combination. And she herself said it was a good day as all her forehands were going in. That doesn't sound to me like a solid game plan. Sure she did well, but she played an injured player with a serve that got the treatment it deserves. And I truly believe that if Lindsay were not injured, she would have won the USO.

People are already touting Sveta and Maria as the next best thing, but these girls need more time to develop and that may involve a slide or slump along the way.

All the other girls have proved themselves IMO as they have been around for a long time.

Well overrated is how hyped up a player is....so i dont see how Svetlana can be overrated as people don't talk about her. I would say either Sharapova or Capriati, Capriati is the most overrated player i've seen. Its not that i don't see her talent, but i just think its not that great in comparison to the rest of the players around her. And Sharapova, well we all know the hype that surrounds her

I think I misunderstood this thread. I thought it meant who was overrated and shouldnt be in the Top 10.

Results are results, but I wana see Sveta and Maria back it up.

The poll looks about right. Everyone got votes except Lindsay who gets no attention whatsoever. Even when she won those 4 titles in a row, nobody cared. Lindsay's definetly the most underated.

Very true!

BUT I still pick Maria Sharapova. LOL

As someone compared Svetlana and Maria, here is my opinions and it's quite simple:

Maria is better looking but the comparison is only within tennis professionals.
Maria won Wimbledon and Svetlana won USOpen but on one hand Maria went on the do modelling and now have a fragrance line which will only be bought by tennis female fans - can't even recall any big win after Serena; on the other hand, Svetlana carries on with her winning streak and using her confidence to advance her careers - working hard.

Who is the winner? It's far too obvious.

Elena D is most overated Serena this year too awesome in past few years but this year shes barely in the top ten Jen has been in the top ten in 1990,.1991,1992,1993,2001,2002,2003& 2004...8 years shes underated if anything!

personally, I think it's mauresmo, I don't think she'll ever win a slam. And for those of you who think Maria Sharapova is over-rated i don't think you could be more wrong. The girl has got some serious game, don't let the media turn you against her, even if you don't like her, you can't say that she isn't an amazing and smart player. I don't like Serena williams at all,but i respect her as a quality player.

Deserving to be in the top ten is totally different than being overrated. Just like most people I think everyone in the top ten deserves to be there (even if I don't agree with the order). I don't think the threadstarter is talking about being overrated in terms of rank, I think it's more in terms of being overrated with regards to all the excessive talk and hype from everyone in general...

If I'm considering the players rankings then MoMo and Myskina's rankings are definitely the ones that are the most inflated and seem a bit too generous compared to where they stand in most tennis experts minds and spectator's points of view.

In terms of hype not really matching the results (based on this season) I guess a small few might say Serena is hyped, although she's earned that right in my opinion, based on what's she's already achieved I think she can rightfully ride the hype for some time- even if there is some truth that the results aren't there right now. In her defense she's already prooved she's worthy of the hype. MoMo and JCap are in that same boat of being hyped a bit too much this season, neither can really rely on there past the way Serena can but at least JCap can rely on her past slam victories to warrant some of the attention. The biggest offender of all would have to be Sharapova. She's obviously got talent and a solid game with loads of weapons, but at the moment the amount of attention she's been getting far exceeds what's she's acheived, even taking into account winning Wimby at 17. I'm not saying that one day she won't live up to the hype or even someday surpass it, it's just that today the hype is bigger than her game. So she gets my vote. No one else in the top ten really gets enough attention to be considered "overrated"...

Jennifer Capriati who's won one tournament in 2.5 years...(Pilot Pen August 2003 and before that Australian Open January 2002).

Monica's last victory was in 2002 in Madrid right her slam win in 1996 at Least Jen has still competed at the top ten level consistently since 2001:)

A tie between Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova.

Elena's two slam finals hide the story of the girl who lost 1st round of the other two Grand Slams and is titleless this season, with losing records this year to Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Serena, Lindsay, & Myskina.

bjbasom1
Sep 20th, 2004, 12:28 AM
Anastasia Myskina is overrated, other than the French Open she hasn't done well in the majors this year. Amelie Mauresmo is also overrated because she didn't do well (for a #1's standard) in the majors either. I actually think Elena Dementieva is underrated because she was the only player this year to make two major finals. I think Kim Clijsters is underrated too because even though she has never won a major, she has won big tournaments (YECx2, Indian Wells).

Sep 20th, 2004, 01:45 AM
Myskina was #5 before French Open. You don't get to #5 in the world by wishing upon a star and hoping the little fairy grants all your wishes. I don't understand the logic here.. the general consensus is shes weak and lacks big weapons so how can she be overated? :retard:

Yes Momo is a huge choker but shes played consistanly well. Maybe her highs haven't beat other top player's highs but her lows have.

Though i think Maria is a great player i don't think the current results match the hype. But hey shes Amuuurica's golden girl.

Capriati is a Slam contender Seles is unranked & will never be in the top again sadly Jen at least is consistent in Slams unlike Venus:)

I voted Myskina.

But you have to be damned good to even get into the top 10 so all the girls have done a stellar job just getting there, and calling them overrated is pretty unfair.

Crazy Canuck
Sep 20th, 2004, 03:42 AM
The general consensus is that Myskina is weak, that anyone would call her overrated is beyond me.
Indeed. Even the commentators on this side of the pond have to work super hard to muster up a compliment over her winning RG

Emptiness
Sep 20th, 2004, 04:01 AM
I think the reason people under rate Myskina is because shes so slight in figure and has no "real" weapons. She doesn't have the serve, doesn't have that power in her shots. Instead she uses her speed, her anticipation, her placement, she out thinks her opponents because no way in hell her spaghetti arms are going to out power someone.

But i better shut the hell up now before people start throwing tomatoes at me.

Sharapova. Nice (sssooooooooooooooo nice) win in Wimbledon though

Sep 20th, 2004, 04:09 AM
absolutely no doubt maria sharapova... one of the most deserving wimbledon champs in recent memory, but thats all i think she will be remembered for... girl cant really play on anything else against top players... hell, she even struggles against mediocore players on a surface like hard where a big game like hers should be rewarded

i also think that jennifer capriati is very very very slightly overrated... and i wouldnt even call it overrated more than under-achieved ... she could have done so much more in her career then 13 titles and 3 slams (god knows thats more than a great career, along with the number 1 ranking) but i think that she could have had a davenport-like or hingis-like career... respected for all time, 40+ titles with slams to boot

also i think that anastasia myskina should have never reached number 2 in the world... and also there is no way in HELL that mauresmo, with her current career, should be the number 1 in the world... (only 3 titles this year, and not a GS F since 99? its BS)... therefore i think they are both a bit overrated

otherwise, i think everyone is ranked just about as they should be according to rankings and talent (im just going to say that if elena had a serve, she would be the number 1 player without a doubt in my mind)

Steffifan
Sep 20th, 2004, 04:09 AM
Jenny gets further in the big tourneys than most of your contenders anyways when people look at history they wont care about mom's wins but rather she was one of 2 #1 players that have as of yet to win a slam:)

I'm surprised by the number that say Maria since she is a slam winner but not Amelie, Elena and Kim who have made it to multiple slam finals and never won (two have even been #1!)

Also Jennifer has been in the top 10 longer than anyone else, I wouldn't see that as being overrated, I would see it as being earned, otherwise she would have dropped out at some point in time.

Overrated is not about who does or doesnt deserve to be there. Its about who gets the most attention without the results. And that would definitely be Maria.
It would not be Sveta because no one ever talks about her as a contender, if anything, shes underrated.
Elena D is too, people talk about her as if shes this amazing player who can beat anyone on her day, but really even if she has the best day of her life and another player with a decent return is playing their best, like Sveta in the final, then the other player will always win. She cant be as great as everyone says she is unless she improves her serve. And shes also very inconsistent. She rarely ever plays as well as she did at the US Open.

Sharapova... Well I don't think she is THAT overrated. At the moment, she's more overexposed than overrated. Most rationnal tennis fans realize she's the not the greatest thing on earth just because she happened to have a good tournement at the right time.

Generally overrated means hyped by the media rather than by rational tennis fans. Lots of tennis fans know shes not all that, but that doesnt stop the media and the commentators drooling over her like shes the next future legend of the game.
