Bernard Hopkins knocked out Oscar De La Hoya tonight, as most people in the know expected. De La Hoya made $30 million, B-Hop, who regardless of the number of weight classes Oscar won in was quite frankly the more accomplished fighter, made "at least $10 million".

I wouldn't call a 3.5 second long farce that gets 14000000$ for the winner and 32000000$ for the loser awesome, but hey, I'm a bitch, so what do I know.

It's not a farce... it's logic. People come to the fight to see the most populair fighter. It's more than logical that an ex-champion gets the most commision for his services.

It isn't exactly prizemoney y'know.

Where does the money come from?

Ticket sales? I doubt 40000 people were willing to pay $1000 each to see this.

TV rights? I doubt TV channels would pay that much to cover it, it's not as if it gets that many viewers.

Advertising? I can't think of a single brand connected to boxing, so if there are companies paying that much, they're not getting much in return in terms of product placement.

I'm actually surprised that the "civil rights" faction of the board hasn't weighed in on this. For a pretty white boy to be making more than twice as much challenging the more accomplished black champion is somewhat bothersome.

Besides the fact that many world-class martial artists could win a (freestyle, feet permitted) fight with the top boxers, the rules of boxing are a joke. If you want an honest test, do away with both rounds and scoring, and let them fight until the first happens among:

a) a knockout
b) stoppage by the ref or doctor
c) resignation, ala chess
d) pre-set max. # of knockdowns, like 3

Oscar De La Hoya is not a white boy , he Hispanic (his parents motherland is Mejico) . While I don't care for boxing, I think he has paid his dues--- and I doubt Bernad Hopkins is complaining about the paycheck difference :tape:

I didn't know De La Hoya was white?? ANyway I think everyone understands why he made so much more than Hopkins.
