‘Venus-Maria Show’ for Chiang Mai

Local tennis enthusiasts will get a special New Year’s treat when former world No 1 Venus Williams and reigning Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova face off in a special exhibition in Chiang Mai.

Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand secretary-general Admiral Bannawit Kengrian confirmed the two marquee players will arrive in town on December 31 to have a countdown party with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and compete in a friendly contest on January 2 in the northern province.

“Sharapova and Venus will play an exhibition that includes a doubles match featuring Tamarine Tanasugarn and Suchanan Viratprasert,’’ Bannawit said.

The Russian glamour girl Sharapova, No 9 in the WTA rankings this week, and the four-time Grand Slam winner Williams are also committed to appear in a promotional video for the One Tambon One Product (OTOP) programme in San Kampaeng, a famous handicraft village in the province.

After the singles showdown between the two Grand Slam winners, there will be a special doubles match in which Sharapova will team up with her ex-partner Tamarine and Williams will pair up with Thai No 2 Suchanan.

“Initially we planned to organise the event indoors, but the prime minister suggested it should be held outdoors and near tourist attractions or the mountains. That way we can promote our country during the coverage on TV, which is the main objective of having the two stars in Thailand,’’ Bannawit said.

Venus started off this year beating Maria in HK and ended up with a very disappointing year. Maybe she should lose in Thailand.

Isn't that the truth!

Maybe beating Maria in a different location
will produce and different result year-wise
for Venus! ;)

I hope we get to see the match
somehow.

Interesting. To me, that shows an intent on Venus' part to play tuneups before OZ. Solid.
