Russian men cannot match women, Safin says

Russia cannot not hope to produce top male players in the near future, despite the success their women have had in 2004, Marat Safin said on Thursday.

While Russian women have won the last three grand slam singles titles, Safin lamented that it would be a long time before the men emulated them.

"There is no-one coming through," the former world number one said after reaching the quarter-finals of the China Open.

"There is not one person who we can say is the potential for the future."

Svetlana Kuznetsova beat compatriot Elena Dementieva in the U.S. Open final this month to match the achievements of Anastasia Myskina in Paris and Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon.

Safin, who has not won a title for two years, paid tribute to all four women.

"You can't compare (the men and women)," said Safin, who was the last Russian man to win a grand slam, at the U.S. Open in 2000.

"The girls are much better than the guys. I'm really happy for the girls. The guys don't have the same ambition as the women have so it will be very difficult."

The now-retired Yevgeny Kafelnikov won the 1996 French Open, the 1999 Australian Open and the 2000 Olympic gold medal.

The truth hurts.... It's too bad that with all of the young women coming up there aren't at least a few guys who could make some noise. Oh well, maybe we'll be surprised by someone from Russia in the future.

So much for the theory that the Russians are only driven by desire to escape poverty. Guess the men are either rich or they were never poverty stricken as some may have suggested.

IMO in every sport Russian women are always better then the Russian men ;)

People in Moscow must be quite rich. It's supposedly one of the most expensive cities to live.

I love Marat. Shame they'll be no more russians in the mens game. Men can make money out of other sports. Tennis is the best sport financially for ladies.

Enough money to eat and DRINK? Yep. That's enough.

Here's what I've wrote on MTF:
I agree with Marat on this. I can't see as many Russian men in tennis as there are women. Russian guys are more lazy and unwilling to work. Andreev and Youzhny are perhaps exceptions (Kafel was). And you can't build a tennis super-power on those xceptions 9just because of the laws of probability: if there's a hundred players there a chance that two will be the best, if there are only 10 the cahnces are 10 times less).

Russian guys CAN perform relatively well only as teams when players HAVE to obey the coach, when there's no choice but to work hard. Believe me, I'm not just saying this. I'm 100% like that too, a Russian man

it's also "easier" (atleast relatively) for the women to make it compared to making it on the tour

if you have talent like safin you are sure of making it on the wta tour, but on the men's tour talent plays a much smaller role

a young girl with little, who just trains and trains, can get very far in the women's tour
whereas on the men's tour....i mean just look at safin and how he's having difficulties coming back

whereas henin she won her first tournament back...the olympics

Very nice of Marat to say. These 4 Russians really have stepped up Russian tennis in a big way.

And its so weird considering many were writing off Nastya and Elena, no-one really knew Sveta and it was supposed to be all about Maria.

Hope these ladies keep on trooping (and that Vera and Elena win a Slam soon).

is chess a sport? hehe

IMO Marat needs to step it up again..being a good role model to other young Russians is a good start.
