View Full Version : Why does everyone hate Maria Sharapova now?

Do people on this site love a player until they win a slam? Personally I like Maria. I think she's a great player, and focused. For those of you who dislike her, why?

I didn't know anyone hated Maria? Really is this true?

Not only does she get as much shit as Serena does, but check out the hated players thread, she is on a lot of them.

No hate from me, just a bit overhyped by the media. She hasn't really done anything for people to not like her yet

Why would they hate her? she's lovely person and very nice (not just looks).

Just to disprove the (I think) theory, I'm a Kim fan (yes the slamless wonder  ) and I dont hate Maria at all. I watched her at Wimbly and thought she did really well and deserved to win on the day.

Now, Kim v Maria, on another day, in another GS final, grrr........

What's there to hate about her? It all has to do with jealousy. So,in fact being hated is sort of a compliment really. Must mean she's done something special :)

Everybody will have his/her own reasons...But I think the media hype plays a big part in it...

That doesn't mean it isn't ignorant to hate/dislike somebody personally because of what the media does...

I can understand them. I used to like Maria way more than I've been since she won Wimbledon. I think the reason is that she's way too overhyped on the press. But actually I don't think that's a reason to hate her, I still like her anyway.

I reated a thread a couple weeks ago askingmyself that question.

What is it about Maria Sharapova I don't like? (http://wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=131931)

I've had some time to think aout it, and I've pretty much concluded that it isn't HER I don't like. This isn't the second coming of Anna Kournikova. Sharapova is a better player, and I'm not being buried with 'Sharapova Sex Symbol' advertising.

Which actually brings up what I don't like. It isn't HER. It's the thinly masked hope onthe part of commentators and announcers for her ascension to the top of the tour. I honestly think Tracy Austin ddn't even NOTICE Anastasia Myskina won RG. Comes right down to it, Sharapova plays like a young Venus Williams. What's not to like? She'll never be Venus in my heart, but at her best, she's competitive with anyone on the tour. While I'd love to see Venus win every GS tournament for the next years, failing that, I wouldn't mind seeing Sharapova vs S. Williams with both playing well. There wouldn't be a lot of net play in such a match, but there'd be some much fuzz knocked off tennis balls they'd have to sweep the court between sets.

I don't personally dislike her. I think she is a lovely, mature, elegant, classy, and excellent tennis player. She also plays like a champion and has tons of guts.
What I dislike are the way people put too much hype on her ( like the media and some of her fans). She won Wimbledon, and some make it look like she is the best in the world
I feel bad for her with all this pressure.

I'm rather indifferent to Maria altogether.

I think the reason is she became dangerous for each players after winning Wimbledon, that's why, and i agree, it's a compliment, i also dislike her :yeah:

I hated Maria a tiny bit before she won wimbledon! It was her 2nd round match against Anne Keothavong where before the match even started she refused to sign autographs after her warm up on the warm up courts but as soon as the BBC cameras arrives, she starts signing!!!

and during her match against Keothavong her she was a break down in the 1st set she was being a cow towards her oppanant and keeped asking for the umpire to start the match because it was a little drizzle!

This is why I hate her!

I don't hate Maria.. I don't dislike her I dislike her teenybopper fans and the general hype around her. Shes talented but shes not the second coming of jesus.

Notice once a player proves that they can be a threat a lot of dislike starts popping up.

No, but IQ estimates are ;)

That said, I don't really see where that poster is coming from. She seems to be like a bubbley teenager who has been force fed answers to give to the press. It's like she's reading off a script half the time. I don't doubt for a second that there is a real person in there somewhere - the giggles and what not lead me to think in that direction - it would just be nice to see it once in a while.

How one performs athletically under pressure has absolutely zero to do with their intelligent level.

I'd roll my eyes at you but I have a migraine. I wouldn't be here posting with it, but I'm stuck at work all night. Oh, woe is me.

Lot's of idiots graduate from highschool. Again, that is not to say that Maria is one of those. In fact, I see no reason to believe she is. But... passing your highschool exams doesn't tell us a whole lot either than the fact that you're more than likely literate (at least to some degree) ;)

Yes, true. I'm fairly certain that my shoe has a higher IQ than that. I never said it was a reasonable estimate :p

No, really? You mean... she isn't a professional student? Erm, duh. Judging by her age, one would assume that any academic exams she would have written would be at highschool level. Do you follow or are you lost?

I edited my post but you replied too quickly. :o

I follow you. She is a normal student (though studying over the net must be kinda...weird. )

I also heard from a good source that her exam results were good, despite the fact she was playing Wimbledon the same week. So its unfair for anyone to insult her intelligence, and claim that she is intellectually challenged.

She's a bright girl. She needs to be in her current atmosphere.

There is a positive correlation between "amount of hate" and "amount of success". The more successful the players are, the more hated(and loved) a player will be. So really its very good Maria is hated by some on this board.

Sorry... I tend to reply too quickly when I have nothing better to do ;)

Studying over the net isn't so bad. Of course, she's younger than I was when I first tried it, but not so much so. It's good because you get to go at your own pace. As long as you're motivated, which I imagine she is, it's fine.

I don't doubt that she's bright, btw.

The self proclaimed troll was just trying to get on your nerves :p

Yes, this board has just been overwhelmed with Lindsay Davenport hatred in the past. As for MTF.... I suggest that you stear clear. General Messages has become the official forum of Roger Federer hatred.

It's not really about "hate"...I just believe she's not playing for the "good reasons" (same for the Williams sisters...).

And the US Open...don't even get me started...lol
