Williams Sisters, Kournikova Heading to Kentucky for Lexus Tennis Challenge

Wednesday, September 15, 2004

Lexington, KY - Sisters Venus and Serena Williams, winners of multiple Grand Slam singles titles, and former Wimbledon semifinalist Anna Kournikova are slated to participate in the second Lexus Tennis Challenge this fall at Lexington’s Rupp Arena. The event is set for Sunday, Nov. 21 and will benefit the Tubby Smith Foundation and the OWL Foundation, which was established by Oracene Price, the mother of Venus and Serena Williams, in an effort to address the learning needs of academically at-risk youth.

“We are thrilled to be coming to Kentucky to work with the Tubby Smith Foundation,” Venus Williams said. “We understand that Coach Smith’s foundation supports the same goals as the OWL Foundation.”

“I have been a tremendous fan of the Williams sisters since they burst onto the tennis scene, so this is a terrific opportunity to be involved with their charity here in the Lexington community,” Smith said. “It was such a great crowd and atmosphere last year when Andy Roddick played at Rupp, and I know this event will be even more exciting.”

Venus Williams will take on Kournikova in a singles match, and Serena Williams will join an additional WTA Tour player in a doubles match. A youth tennis clinic at the Lexington Tennis Club and the Night Owl Party at the Hyatt Regency Lexington will precede the festivities on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Night Owl Party features a reception, dinner, auction and a special performance by an R&B star.

“This is one of our family’s favorite weekends,” Serena Williams said. “It’s great to be able to play tennis and raise money for educational programs, which is a priority for us.”

Tickets are available now at all TicketMaster locations, via telephone at (859) 281-6644 or at the Rupp Arena box office by calling (850) 233-3535, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tickets are priced from $20 to $75. To inquire about courtside boxes or invitations to the Night OWL Party, call (859) 335-8361 ext. 111.

The first Lexus Tennis Classic presented last December at Rupp Arena featured U.S. Open Champion Andy Roddick, James Blake and twins Bob and Mike Bryan. The exhibition attracted over 4,000 attendees.

Hm-m? I wonder how the OWL Foundation wrangled Anna K to do a charity event? With the Williams sisters no less. :)
I didn't think Anna K. did charity.
Can someone recall any other charity event(s) she's been involved in?

Kournikova needs to come back to the tour, not to cheesy exho's where the money is guaranteed and the organizers can tell her opponents to take it easy on her to save everybody being embarrassed. I'm sure Venus knows her job is to let Kournikova win at least six games in two sets, or preferably even more. If i were the Williams sisters i would refuse to even set foot on a court with Kournikova, but it's their decision.

Serena and Anna have eachother's cell phone numbers, so I'm guessing Serena just called and asked her to play to help out her mother's charity. Good on Anna to accept. Serena is very talkative and outgoing, you'd be surprised how many players she gets along with.

I'm glad they were able to look beyond that then. They're doing this for charity. And they've got 3 of the biggest names in tennis. Many will benefit from this event.

oh now i see, Anna actually is doing it as a favor to the Williams... so they definitely aren't going to beat up on her too bad, she's the guest of honor. ;-)

As far as Serena goes, it's a lot easier to be Miss Congeniality after you've already made your 75 million dollars. Serena wasn't so friendly to everybody when she was trying to get to the top of the game. I prefer the mean and nasty Serena to the sociable Serena who calls other players on their mobiles to chat. When Serena starts getting friendly with Justine, that'll be a sign that it's time to hang up the ol' rackets.

I gotta agree with you on that, but i think the attention she brings is mostly non tennis related. But i gotta give her prop. She did make tennis a little more popular during her time. She use to have some amazing shot making that made it enjoyable to watch. It is just that she was never consistant with it. She would always break down. That is what bothered me about her the most.

I do think Anna needs tennis more than it needs her. She did bring attention to the sport, but many of those fans left the sport when she did, so her presence really didn't help tennis all that much. If she does return, which is a big if, that would be great for her simply because I would hate to see her career end in this way.

It is unfair to say that the recent GS winners will only be one hit wonders, especially since no one expected them to win a GS anyway. Honestly, you could pretty much say this about any GS winner anyway.

I really don't understand why so many people seem to believe that since Anna is playing this exhibition against Venus that somehow this is a precipitating a return to tennis. Anna has never made the claim herself and unless she does, I am just going to take it as her participation to help out this charity and nothing more. Anna recently said that she did not know when she was going to return to tennis, but had not considered retirement as an option. Just let the girl play without imposing such high expectations.

No, I can't argue with that. She did bring attention to the tennis world, but for all the wrong reasons. But hey, any attention that raises the popularity of the game is great. Isn't it? The attention she gets does somehow comes down to her as a tennis player... A tennis beauty who can't win one lossy tournament.

Why the anti Maria feelings, Barcadi? I didn't know you felt that way. But ti's okay. Maria has only played one grand slam since she won Wimbledon. So let's wait a few more grand slams before labeling her a 1 grand slam wonder. And it's puzzling how you could say Maria is over hyped when she has delivered the goods bigtime while still playing under the restrictive WTA AER.

As for Anna I hope she makes a legitimate WTA Tour comeback attempt. But I have my doubts because she seems happy doing other things. And I also have my doubts about Anna's drawing power with tennis fans in 2004.

That's easy. It will be Serena. Anna's match outfits were never that revealing.

I should mention that in the majority of Venus/Anna matches, Anna was able to at least get one really competitive set, even when Anna was ranked in the 80's. Of course, that might be irrelevant considering that Anna hasn't played in over a year, but it's somewhat worth noting.

Anna took more games off Venus (7) than any other player in Stanford 2002. (including Kim Clijsters)

and that is when she was spinning all her serves in.

Also Anna is friends with Serena, and friendly with Venus.

What matters is not only Anna's service speed, but Venus' (ala: did Anna have to return real first serves or not). I hope they don't rig the radar to make everything officially faster than it really is. Also, whether Anna can return hard, deep groundies is an indicator. The score is meaningless if Venus err, Plays Pattycake. ;)
