Serena of course she's the most famous, outgoing, Charismatic, all over the place, seen everywhere....definitly she would make the best #1.

Only problem is the WTA/USTA keeps screwing with the girl.

Kim, because she's so popular and the media love her. And all the commentators say what a fantastic advert she is for womens' tennis.

I Love Maria

Sharapova, as she's very good looking and a proven champion at such a young age. Also the fans favourite.

Kimmie ofcourse!!! When she was No.1, WTA said what a wonderful ambassador she is for women's tennis, with her beautiful smile, fair play and kindness not only to the other players, but also the spectators, ball kids, WTA people...She is a true example for everyone.

Lizzie Bradbuy, she's American, she's a rising star/bad girl of international tennis. She's set to be the best female tennis player in the world, a Grand Slam champ. She's gorgeous as well, look:

Serena or Venus because they both transcend the tennis world and people actually watch when they are in the finals. And they are well known on more than just one continent.

Serena and Venus, but more so Serena first. She is so well known. She gets the "tennis" out there for people to actually watch. Im telling you, at first i was only Serena and Venus watcher, but I've grown a liken to watching Elena D'ss (groundstokes only) and Roger Federer.

Someone who brings people to the game e.g. Sharapova

I'd go with Serena as number one and either Justine or Jen ranked # 2. It seems when ever you put Serena on court with either Justine or Jen you get just about everything you'd want in a tennis match. Great tennis, good rivals and of course something always happens that has people talking for weeks after a match. When these women play people care who wins.

Umm..no, They don't want Jen. They thought her being number one would be great, but it wasn't. One of the things the WTA does is expect the players to do much of the publicity for them. The WTA do very little and hope to live off the reputations the players get. Now, admittedly, with Jen, they thought they were getting the dream ticket, but Jen's not one for the chat show circuit. Whereas other number ones have allowed, and to a point, cultivated, some form of publicity, Jen shied away from it. So, while they expected Jen's story to be everywhere, mainly because of Jen doing every possibly chat show going, and the offers were there, nothing happened.

I've long had an issue with the WTA and their lack of publicity, and this is a case in point. They weren't happy about Jen (I've read more than one article on this, but can't recall the sources) because they sat on their backsides, waiting for her to do the work and for them to reap the benefits. When she didn't, they didn't like it.

So, who do they want? A self-publicist. Plain and simple. A very accessible self-publicist.

No wonder the WTA are always are so Pro-Chrissie, whilst I was too shy and retiring for them

That'd be Maria then :tape: ;)

In honesty I'm sure they just want the dominant player of the time to be number 1. Steffi was never one for publicity, doing the talk show circuit etc but was clearly the best player in the world for so many years that her number 1 status was popular in the WTA. She was regarded as one of the greatest female sports stars in the world, not just in tennis, and this got the WTA publicity.

Same goes for Monica, Hingis and the Williams Sisters. I'm sure they want their number 1 player to be a global sports star, not "just" somebody known to tennis fans.

Serena--she loves the attention and is quite famous and American
Maria Sharapova--beautiful, blonde, loves publicity, and Americanized, they can pass her off as "American enough"
Kim Clijsters--a distant third only because she's neither American nor Americanized, not bad looking, will play a load of tournaments for them and be a nice ambassador

I think this is their dream list. I think they have been ok with Justine, but she hasn't played a lot this year, isn't really that great looking and isn't Americanized enough to be super-popular here. I don't know how they feel about Amelie, no slam, reflects oddly on their rankings, decent looking, totally not American and France isn't real popular with SOME Americans today. I don't know how they feel about the lesbian thing.

I agree with Snuffkin. They do want a self-publicist. Ali's also right that really dominant players like Graf become stars despite their lack of publicity just because they're such amazing athletes. I don't see anyone reaching Graf's level of dominance though, so that leaves the only two members of the top 10 who really seem to like publicity - Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Kim is useful for the WTA because she'll do the promotional stuff without complaint and (when not injured) will play every event she can, but she doesn't have the charisma or looks to be a star in the same way that Serena and Maria do. Justine isn't going to let the WTA tell her what to do, promotional stuff wise, nor does she have the charisma/looks of Maria/Serena, so I think she's way down their list of preferred #1s. Elena Dementieva would probably be a popular #1 as she's articulate, blonde and attractive but she isn't particularly keen on publicity/promotional stuff either. Her good language skills, though, somewhat make up for this - both her French and English are near fluent and that makes her more popular with fans, especially at RG.

Overall, though, the WTA just need to get with the times and realise that there are no up and coming Americans and, if they want to appeal to the American market, they have to start marketing non-American players other than Maria Sharapova. I don't understand it - Vera, Elena, Anastasia are all attractive, interesting women but the WTA isn't promoting them. Justine and Amelie both play flashy attractive tennis, but they don't promote them. Continuing only to rely on Serena, Maria and Venus is a really bad long-term plan..

Kim or Maria would be at the top of that list. Don't understand that allure that Kim has, but apparently she has something that everyone likes.
Not too far behind would be Jen. I really don't understand what they see in that BITCH???????

This question isn't as easy to answer as I first thought.

First I'd have to say that since the WTA is a money hog ;) , I'd have to consider, tournament endorsements, media by-stories, who people I speak to admire the most, which players have garnered the most assistance and, IMO, been forgiven the most by WTA, as well as crowd adoration.
Hm-m...?
The only one that immediately comes to mind is Jennifer Capriati.

I love my girls dearly, but they don't even come close to the love affair that the WTA has with Jennifer. Heck, this past US Open proved that to me without a doubt. Even the announcers love Jenn, and constantly remind us of her Cinderella story.
I suppose it's because she typifies and epitomizes what most in the media (America & Europe) want people to believe.

ALTHOUGH, I will say that as of lately, Lindsey has been stealing a lot of Jenn's thunder with her talk of retiring and her late & successful run of tourney wins. :)

I think since the standard of beauty seems to be blonde, blue eyes and tall that they would love Maria to be no.1.

Then, love or hate her, only Serena can break the mold...she ALWAYS makes things interesting. Wether it´s her outfits, her comments, her tennis...people talk about her and that´s good for the sport.

I placed Serena slightly above Maria because Maria is still, after all, only 17 and the WTA is basically dealing with a teenager and I think someone like Serena who's a little older and more experienced is easier to deal with. Plus, Serena has a proven track record with them, she was the WTA's wet dream when she was No. 1, she played a decent number of tournaments then, was very consisent, had some decent rivalries (Venus, Justine) and loved doing ads and public appearances. She won 4 consecutive majors, which was HUGE news. It doesn't get any better than that.

I think it is obvious they would want someone who sells tickets around the world, someone who is good at making money for them, cause in the long run that is all they care about, the more money the more they want him, that is the highest preference. Umgh and than so that she would appeal to the fans, you would have to look at what sells. First of all what sells? its obvious sex sells, so most likely she has to be tall, blonde (bronettes are so much prettier), nice body-meaning skinny with pretty big boobs, and somewhat of an ass. The player has to sell, in what better way to sell than sex. That is probably wrong but that is the society we live in. Thats what most people look for. Now what else sells? how about connecting with the audience on a personal level on a sentimental level? Have a good story about her working hard, or coming from a country that didnt support her, being abused by her dad, and most importantly someone who makes headlines, who talks alot, who causes controversy by what she wears and says! People love drama! that sells. No press is bad press as long as you have your name in the paper and it sells. Makes you famous, makes money. Another thing is the cultural boundry, it would be better if this player talked a fluent english so that the fans can communicate with her and connect with what she says, and since English is a language which most of the middle class, high class, and even lower class speak, its English.
Also another thing to recognize is will the player do media, do interviews, magazines, TRL or Late night with letterman and such like shows.
This is more recognition for the wta tour.
Finally a player that more or less will listen to the Wta Tour and follow their rules, let them get away with things, and be able to communicate with them on a satisfactory level.

This is marketing.

and so for the player they would love to be number one

Obviously Anna Kournikova, I mean she is not playing yet she still causes controversy, every player still has to talk about her and be compared to her, remember the shirtless guy fans, who knew nothing about tennis, before Anna suddenly going and paying for all of her matches holding signs go Anna your Hot, she caused controversy, she was only number 7, she never won a title, yet she made tennis in russia, hell in the whole world famous as hell, she made tennis more recognizable than before from people magazines to rollingstones to whatever, she gave Tennis a lot of coverage, more fans, even those who hated her watched on:wavey: She made The wta more money they loved her, even if they hated her.

No with no Anna who else

Obviously
*Maria Sharapova, beautiful talented, she is the new hope for the Wta marketers. Blonde, beautiful for the average fan, good attitude, sassy with media, umgh goes on TRL, controversy, talks alot in interviews.
*Serena Williams as well always good to be atleast in the top 5, lots of controversy, lots of talking, catsuits, interviews, media coverage, money maker. Loves the attention.
*Jelena Dokic, she could be profitable, esp with what is happening with her dad, what better way to get fans than to have a beautiful tennis player go near the top of tennis lose it all cause of family problems and her crazy father, than she returns, makes it to the top, she is pretty she is willing to say what she thinks, what she belives, she sturrs things up.
This would be a dream for them. The come back kid....
*Wait a second jaja why do you think Jennifer Capriati has so many fans no matter what she does, the comeback kid, everybody loves a good drama, and Jennifer just like Serena has always been really good at it. Jenny is a money maker.

This is what its about, and I am pretty confident in my answer, obviously I too sometimes fall for it, and I am a big fan of Jelena Dokic, Anna, and I like the other girls more or less.
But still like it or not a girl as quiet as Amanda Coetzer will never be that great for the WTA as well as others like Steffi, Arantxa, they interest the real tennis fan for something more...
Not that I am saying Serena, or Anna dont but they can also interest non tennis fan and make more money and more media coverage.

Serena is probably the biggest name to non tennis fan, and as someone said, I think the WTA want someone who has respect as an athlete, is articulate and interesting and looks good!

While I think Mauresmo is a wonderful player, like Kim before her, it is wierd to have someone as world no. 1 who has never won a slam, and does devalue it in a way. She is the most consistent player, so deserves her ranking though I guess.

Personally, I think Justine and Serena are the ones who should rise to battle it out for the top spot - if they can both get back to their best. They are the best 2 players.
