Yes, I read your post that you only watched the first set. lol! Sorry that we didnt put more Venus winners. There were more in the other 2 sets also.
Some of our forum members have been requesting the Year end Championships match between Monica and Venus. So we might do that soon. Even though Monica lost that, in straight sets no less ;)

I understand, hey it's a Monica forum!! I knew what to expect, I like ALL of the other videos though, it's great to watch Seles hit the ball well. I don't remember if I saw the YEC match, but I'll have to vote for you to display that one.

Great videos  That '92 Wimby match between Seles and Navi still gives me the goosebumps. I was so heartbroken back then when Navi lost convincingly to Seles. I was heavily rooting for the underdog Navi since Seles was already winning everything at such a young age. But again who would have known back then that it was Seles's last Wimbledon before the stabbing.

Amazing Clips. She plays so differently back then. It's like there are two Monica's as tennis players. Her play before was phenomenal, extraordinary and out of this world. Even her on court demeanors ( the pumping of the fist and screams YESSSSSSS!, bouncing on the courts after winning an exciting point) were very different from the one the came back in 1995 after the stabbing.

... or Seles's last Wimbledon semi appearance ever.
Although she returned to the game when still 21 years old.

Don't think so.
Her USO performance in 95 & 96 was far better than in 91 & 92.
She lost considerably less games in the first 6 rounds. Well, OK, in the 95 & 96 finals she met a worthy opponent for the first time at Flushing .....

She won AO 96, losing only one set in 7 matches. Same as at AO 92 of course (in 91 & 93 she lost two sets) - but she lost less games in 96 compared to 92.

And don't you remember the Canadian Open 95, her first tournament after her return? Awesome indeed.

When Seles was beaten by Graf in USO 96 final her confidence started to go down at last. Then Hingis took over who always had Seles's number. Monica's game simply was to predictable für Martina!

Calimero, a notorious Graf fan is now resorting to hypocrisy and desperation. Wow, again this is really desperate...Seles was not the same player after the stabbing of a deranged Graf fan to benefit Graf. Seles was grotesquely overweight, with no stamina, and and she didn't have the same interest in the sport, nor the same focus.....her father also, you moron, had been diagnosed with cancer shortly after her return. Genius, she had gained 35 pounds at one point...does that sound like the same player to you?

Monica started off very very well, but then faltered, because she simply could not and would not get fit...mentally, she just wasn't the same, and physically, it showed. But, who can really blame Monica after surviving such a brutal cowardly attack that is unprecedented in tennis history and dubbed as the one of the worst crimes in sports history?

But her unparalled courage to comeback was still very remarkable in itself ... can you imagine any other player in the history of both the men's and women's tennis-- being able to return to tennis after being stabbed in the back and being away from the competition for almost 30 months (2 years, 4 months) and then coming back and winning a Tier I event and then reaching the Grand Slam final one month after her return? Then, Seles actually went on to win the Australian for a 4th time.

Still, she was not as good in 1995 or 1996 as she was in 1991, 1992 and 1993 before the stabbing took place. At the 1995 US Open, a post stabbing Seles was still able to pushed Graf to the limit of her abilities and almost won if not for that controversial "ace" in the 1st set tiebreaker that was called out that could given her the 1st set. What's even more amazing was she bageled Graf 6-0 in the 2nd set before she ran out of gas in third set. T

The pre stabbing Monica will go the distance because she was fit. She never loses a match because she's tired. She never gives up until the last point..she simply hates to lose...to anyone. Her Will to Win was unmatched. But to further prove my point that she was not the same player she once was-- At the A0 96, the only GS she won after coming back, she was 5-1 down in the third set to Rubin in the semifinals, and Rubin simply choked.

Gunther Parche actually got more than what he wished for.

To conclude, the fact remains that Seles won 10 of the 12 biggest events in women's tennis in those 30 months leading up to the stabbing --- EVERY major event in women's tennis other than Wimbledon between the 1990 WTA Championships and the 1993 Australian Open.

The way world number one Seles beat second ranked Steffi Graf to win the 1993 Australian Open for a 3rd consecutive singles title there certainly did not suggest that Seles was close to ending her dominance.

It took something beyond Steffi Graf to stop Seles. Again, this is not difficult to see. Was Seles a MORE SUPERIOR tennis player than Steffi Graf? No doubt about it as the numbers and stats from 1990-1993 can very well prove it. It's History :D  :wavey:

Chris Evert: "[Monica] then really got cheated out of a lot of Grand Slams. She was really dominating women's tennis, dominating Steffi Graf. As I said before, she won seven out of eight Grand Slams and then got stabbed and was out for 27 months. Her assailant got his wish, that Steffi Graf be Number One, and sure enough, Steffi regained the Number One position when Monica was out of the game. So he got his wish."

spencercarlos, could you please share the 2002 Australian Open Hingis-Seles videoclips? I am dying to see them, but I can not seem to download them off R&J's website. IMO, of all their matches I have seen, this one was the highest quality, since both ladies were on top of their games. Monica mad a bit too many unforced errors, but that is bound to happen when playing someone as good as Martina.

The killing of the Colombian national soccer team's central defender by a gunman was a little bit worse.
O.J. murdering his wife, too.
And so on.
A 1-cm stab wound doesn't qualify.

BTW, Seles in 95/96 was awesome.
If it weren't for a transcendent (well, not at USO 95, where Graf was injured and distracted because her dad had been thrown into prison prior to the tournament) Steffi Graf, Seles would have won 3 of 5 slams in 95/96. At FO 96 she went out because of injury. Wimbledon 96 doesn't count because Wimbledon is Wimbledon and Seles is Seles. 3 of 5 slams. But she had to battle peak Graf. What was to much for her. As always.

....
But her unparalled courage to comeback was still very remarkable in itself ... can you imagine any other player in the history of both the men's and women's tennis-- being able to return to tennis after being stabbed in the back and being away from the competition for almost 30 months (2 years, 4 months) and then coming back and winning a Tier I event and then reaching the Grand Slam final one month after her return? ...

Graf wouldn't have missed 2.25 years in the first place. She would have played again when the stab wound had healed.

This stabbing of the #1 player (a teenager) in women's tennis for 3 years running was by a fan of the beneficiary (the #2 player in women's tennis who had only won 2 of the previous 12 biggest events in women's tennis during the preceding 12 months.

THEN, after the stabbing of this #1 ranked teenager who had won 10 of the last 12 biggest events in women's tennis up to that point ... the BENEFICIARY suddenly goes from winning just 2 of the last 12 Grand Slam events during that previous 30 months to winning 4 consecutively in the absence of the true #1 player of the first half of the 1990s.

That is the truth of the story. :wavey: :D

The fact remains that Seles won 10 of the 12 biggest events in women's tennis in those 30 months leading up to the stabbing --- EVERY major event in women's tennis other than Wimbledon between the 1990 WTA Championships and the 1993 Australian Open.

The way world number one Seles beat second ranked Steffi Graf to win the 1993 Australian Open for a 3rd consecutive singles title there certainly did not suggest that Seles was close to ending her dominance.

It took something beyond Steffi Graf to stop Seles .. it took a sharp knife in the hands of a Graf fan in Germany to stop Monica's dominance. Again, this is not difficult to see. :D :wavey:

This is very sad and dumb above. You do graf and your argument a major diservice by sounding so fanatical and tedious......

but either way, it makes no difference. graf never won back her number from Seles.

She was inferior to Seles as of 1993, and admitted so in her press conference at the Asssie Open 93, after she was thoroughly dismissed.....

You can take solace in one fact, Graf isn't alone in that opinion. Nearly every major figure in tennis, as well as all commentators, have said that seles was superior to Steffi in the early nineties. This includes Evert, Martina, Shriver, MJF, Bud Collins etc etc etc..... .

"In the early nineties", that's the point. All the U.S. persons might be right that (now) U.S. citizen was superior then. Because she was #1 and Graf #2. But everybody knows that Graf was way better in 88/89 or 93/96 than in 91/92. Seles profited from Graf's slump.
Players can slump sometimes.
Capriati, Agassi, Venus are examples too.
We can prove it with statistical data.
But as you obviously are a girl you have some diffculties with numbers.

Seles was amazing indeed.
But her making only 30 UEs to Graf's 66 helped a lot.
IMO, Graf more lost the match than Seles did win it .....

Seles played almost ASV-like. She simply retrieved every ball.
Kudos to her!
All other players would have lost to Graf that day.

But her making only 30 UEs to Graf's 66 helped a lot.
IMO, Graf more lost the match than Seles did win it .....

Seles played almost ASV-like. She simply retrieved every ball.
Kudos to her!
All other players would have lost to Graf that day.

Monca Seles was just too good and too powerful of a tennis player for Steffi Graf to handle. This match clearly explains why Graf was NUMBER TWO.This match further demoralize Graf that brought her to near tears. Poor Graf,if only she had a two handed backhand and a good touch at the net she could have finally won that match. But the again, the mental aspect comes into question. Steffi was not a naturally talented player like Monica , she needs to practice more and spend long hours on the tennis courts to really be able to put up a challenge against a great player like Seles, or Navratilova or even the Williamses.

One more thing about Graf is that she succumbs to pressure. She's just so mentally fragile against a tough cookie like Seles which clearly showed in the big moments of the match. She's also very inconsistent and erratic on her shots even on her bread and butter shot [forehand] which reminded me so much of that mediocre 90's player Irina Spirlea.

Against the ASV, Sabatini, Martinez.. Graf had excellent chances to win. But against formidable worthy opponents, she simply was not good enough back then.

Monica Seles was soooo unbelievably amazing in this match. What a brilliant player    :worship: :worship: :worship:

Athen,

World Number 1 Monica Seles was indeed sensational in the '92 French against World Number 2 Steffi Graf. It strongly reaffirmed what the world had known all along....that Seles, beyond reason, is the best female tennis player in the planet.

The historic epic match (Seles was going for three consecutive French crowns) dissapointed no one save the loser and her family as they held the 16,000 spellbound as they tore up the red clays of Roland Garros. Steffi did put up a good match but eventually bowed down to tenacity and iron will of Monica. Steffi was stubborn to the end but it was not enough to beat Monica who simply refuses to lose. Seles won the match and became the first woman in more than half a century (55 years) to win 3 straight Crowns at Roland Garros. Beyond doubt, Monica was rewriting the history books and was on a fast track in becoming the greatest female tennis player ever.

Here's what World Number 2 Graf had to say after such a heartbreaking finals loss: "Monica definitely is tough"

Just to further prove my point, Here's the stats from 1990-1993 between Seles and Graf.

BTW, are you a man or a woman? seriously, thanks for your kind words.
______________________________________________

Seles won about 20% more titles than Graf did.

Seles won (90%) of the major titles in the 3 year period (12 for Seles vs. only 2 for Graf).

CLAY COURTS: MONICA SELES.

Seles was the better player on clay:

1990 French Open
1991 French Open
1992 French Open

INDOOR: MONICA SELES.

Seles won the biggest indoor event in 1990, 1991 and 1992:

1990 Tour Championships
1991 Tour Championships
1992 Tour Championships

HARDCOURTS: MONICA SELES.

Seles was the better player on hardcourts because she won the 2 biggest events on hardcourts 5 straight times:

1991 Australian
1991 U.S. Open
1992 Australian
1992 U.S. Open
1993 Australian

GRASS COURTS: STEFFI GRAF.

Graf won Wimbledon in 1991 and 1992 when Seles did not play the event in 1991 and she made the final round of 1992 ... so Graf has the better record on grass.

HARDCOURTS: SELES
INDOORS: SELES
CLAY: SELES
GRASS: GRAF

CUMULATIVE May 1990 - April 1993 until stabbing:

Seles: 201-16 (92.63%)
Graf: 200-22 (88.50%)

BY SURFACE:

Grass May 1990 - April 1993 until stabbing:

Seles: 10-2 match record (83.33%) .. no titles
Graf: 19-1 match record (95.00%) .. 2 titles

Indoor Carpet May1990 - April 1993 until stabbing:

Seles: 36-2 match record (94.74%) ... 8 titles
Graf: 57-5 match record (91.94%) ... 12 titles

#1 Ranking

Monica Seles Mar 11, 1991 --- Aug 04, 1991 (21 weeks)
Steffi Graf Aug 05, 1991 - --Aug 11, 1991 (1 week)
Monica Seles Aug 12, 1991 --- Aug 18, 1991 (1 week)
Steffi Graf Aug 19, 1991 --- Sep 08, 1991 (3 weeks)
Monica Seles Sep 09, 1991 - --Jun 06, 1993 (91 weeks)

Seles LOST her number one ranking due to inactivity on June 06, 1993 after the horrible stabbing by a jealous Graf fan.

Steffi Graf challenged for the top ranking twice in 1991 BUT was only capable of holding to it at the maximum (three weeks). Ultimately, the german LOST the battle to Seles and happily settled at number two

Then...Enter Gunther Pache.

Nice statistics there She-ra :wavey:

Let me say that we didnt intend this clip to start up the ever popular Seles/Graf debate. We did this clip because (it won the poll) it is just a great match between two great champions. But since we are talking about Seles and Graf, and this wonderful match up at the 92 French Open......

Seles and Graf were miles ahead of the other players back then. When Graf came around and took over from Navratilova - I dont think there were many people that thought that there would be another player to challenge Graf for a long time.

But then came Seles in 1989, Graf was probably not too worried because she was able to beat Seles in that first year of Monica's career. But then in 1990 (mind you not long after Seles came onto the tour) Monica started to win some of their match ups. Monica won the 90 German Open and The French Open over her - as well as winning a total of 9 tournaments that year. Then in 91 Monica started winning like crazy and took over the number 1 ranking.
I guess my point is, that Seles and Graf were so much better then the rest of the tour.

It was either Monica or Steffi that was winning the titles, and then Monica started to win back to back Grand Slams and Steffi was delegated to second place most of the time. Its a shame that the momentum was stopped in 93, cause their rivalry could have went on and made them both even better players.

Cheers to both of them, they both should be celebrated for their outstanding careers :wavey:
