Onward to the next tournament...

This looks to be a very strong field, so Lindsay will have to work her hardest.

Good luck. :)

Lets go Lindsay:)

Field has majorly opened up with Christine, Serena and Capriati pulling out. The only ones left who could cause Lindsay alot of trouble are Clijsters and Svetlana.

Elldee
Oct 1st, 2004, 08:47 PM
I actually really want Lindsay and Svetlana to meet in this tournement to see who wins with a level playing field... although either way it'll be annoying... if Lindsay wins it'll be 'what if?' about the US open title, but if she loses she'll be out of Filderstadt. A win over Kuznetsova should encourage Lindsay back next year.

gossipcom
Oct 1st, 2004, 09:31 PM
Amelie's still scheduled to play the tournament, so she could be a force to reckon with.

The whole draw has definitely opened up - and let's hope it's one of those situations where the top seeds make at least the SFs (because Lindsay needs quality points if she wants to get the no 1 sooner rather than wait till the end of year champs)

Andrew.
Oct 1st, 2004, 09:35 PM
I think Lindsay knows she lost to Kuznetsova because she was injured, so I'm not sure that that loss "bothers" her as much as other losses might. Lindsay's game thrives indoors, and even though she says her best surface is outdoor hardcourts, her game is really custom built for an indoor court. One, there are no exterior conditions to effect her game, such as wind. Without wind, Lindsay's serve rarely goes off, and her ground game stays very stable. Also, the courts are a bit quicker, and she really does not need to rely on movement.

Andrew.

We should be okay there.

And the rankings are favorable for Lindsay to get to #1 before the end of the year. As it is once Amelie's Moscow points come off Lindsay is only about 200 points behind, then another 100 come off the following week for Filderstadt. If Lindsay wins one of those tournaments and makes the semis of the next one, as long as Amelie doesn't win, chances are she's number one.

Well, Lindsay's got a great chance to be n1 before the end of the year, but she has to be healthy. If she wins Filderstadt, Zurich and Moscow, is she assured to be n1?

That's a great draw. Molik in the first round could be difficult, but I really don't see any reason for her to now get into the final.

Elldee
Oct 3rd, 2004, 12:49 PM
I'm a bit annoyed about Molik in round two, and as Lindsay's first match, but all the other main threats [Dementieva, Mauresmo and Kuznetsova] are in the other half of the draw. I'd like to see Pierce get to the semis and then Lindsay win overall and I think both are probable. I don't see Mauresmo getting beyond the quarters actually, or maybe Schnyder will upset Mauresmo, that'll be great in regard to Lindsay claiming the number one ranking.

I wish Lindsay had been seeded number two at the US open and had Mauresmo's draw [as the second seed], I know the reason she didn't win was because of injury but still, I'd rather she'd met Dementieva than Kuznetsova... but nevermind.

I love doubles so I REALLY hope eurosport show Lindsay's matches. I'm quite excited, she better win now!

Andrew.
Oct 3rd, 2004, 01:27 PM
There is something that worries me about her playing doubles though. She gets very fragile when she plays. I know Corina is her friend and all, and I love watching her play doubles, but I'm not sure if this is the right decision for her body.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

i HATE it when she plays Alicia! As an Australian, and an Alicia fan, I am SOOOOOO Natalie Imbruglia-ed when they play each other! LOL

Realistically, even though Alicia is playing the best tennis of her career Lindz has never had much problem with her.

Andrew.
Oct 3rd, 2004, 03:11 PM
Very true. Lindsay beat her in straights at Amelia Island, and Lindsay was apparently playing very poorly.

4/4 2004 AMELIA ISLAND CLAY (O) R16 L. DAVENPORT 6-4 7-5 39/--

Lindsay beat Molik this year on clay despite Molik's play being a bit different from the norm. In the olympics semi final Molik/Mauresmo I thought Molik deserved to win and I'm pretty sure Lindsay can beat Molik in straight sets if Amelie can.

gossipcom
Oct 3rd, 2004, 05:27 PM
She usually plays doubles in the indoor season because of the lack of match practice after taking a break for a month, etc...

Plus she has this uncanny habit that when she plays singles and doubles in indoors she either stuffs up badly or does the double and wins both :)

Let's hope it's the latter.

Yes Amelie hadn't taken a set off Lindsay since early 2000 - but they haven't played indoors in almost a year (last time they played indoors was Hopman Cup and Amelie's definitely a different player than what she was like then).

It's tournaments like these when they're expected to go well, that are the most difficult to win.

Andrew.
Oct 3rd, 2004, 07:29 PM
That's where you're wrong though. Amelie might be number one now, but she's not a different player than she was a year ago. Her game is completely passive. She just wait behind the baseline 90% of the time doing nothing and waiting for the error. That doesn't work against Lindsay.

lindsayno1
Oct 3rd, 2004, 08:37 PM
its not normally lindsay who makes the error either, she forces it upon her opponent cos of the speed she wacks teh ball down court and the range of shots she produces

I actually like Alicia Molik but not when she's playing lindsay. Have not seen the draw so I take it Molik could be her first opponent. Can't wait to see Lindsay play again. Has Eurosport got some coverage of Filderstadt. I have been away for a long weekend so I am not up to speed with what is going on :)

That's a very good point. And Kuznetsova is extremely streaky. She pretty much sucked from Wimbledon until the US Open. I'm waiting for that suckage period again.
After Wimbledon, she didn't suck so much as she was just plainly consistent. I think she made the quarterfinals of all of her lead-up tournaments to the US Open, but no further. She beat the players she was supposed to, but lost to those ranked ahead or close to her, like Elena D, Vera, and Amelie. That actually made her sudden win at the US Open su surprising, because she hadn't really proven before that that she could beat the elite players in such an important event. The fact that two of her better opponents (Mary and Lindsay) were struggling with injuries certainly helped her cause, as well.

Anyway, as for Filderstadt, the draw is open for Lindsay to make the finals. Nadia Petrova could be troublesome if her serve is on, but that's doubtful as she is so streaky and has never beaten Lindsay. I look forward to a potential rematch between Kuzzie and Davenport, with the better player coming out on top and not having to deal with an injury. ;) I no longer worry about Mauresmo for Davenport and Dementieva can't beat Lindsay on a fast court - just clay. Myskina is utterly helpless aginst Big L on all surfaces , not to mention she's still not over the Olympics.

I think she should be fine playing just one week of doubles with her friend. Remember that when the players play doubles, they usually do that instead of extra practice.

I'm very excited to see these two together again as well as Mary and Lisa playnig together. Unfortunately they're in the same section of the dubs draw along with the #1 seeds, who I also like very much. Argh!

Leo_DFP
Oct 4th, 2004, 03:17 AM
Very true. Lindsay beat her in straights at Amelia Island, and Lindsay was apparently playing very poorly.
All I remember about that match was that Davenport won from 2-5 down in the second set and it was a two-day affair because of a rain delay at 5-5 in the second. I suppose that Alicia could be a problem for Lindsay with her serve, especially if Davenport is rusty or unmotivated.

gossipcom
Oct 4th, 2004, 06:57 AM
Andrew we'll disagree on the point above so I'm not going to go further with it :)

If Lindsay is below her game, Alicia will most likely pounce - she hasn't come into the top 20 for the first time in her career for a small reason - she's one of the few outside top 10 players who has beaten some of the best players in the last 3 months and indoors with her strong strokes and kick serve she isn't a player to take lightly..

Granted Alicia can get past Schiavone in the first round :) if she does I'll have to of my favs playing each other in that 2nd round <g>

LethalLindsay
Oct 4th, 2004, 09:35 PM
I don't think that Lindsay will have too many problems with Alicia but i agree with gossip, if Alicia is on and her confidence is up (as it should be after a demolition of Schiavone) then it could be tight.
Alicia should not be underestimated and i am wouldn't be surprised if Lindsay was thinking the same thing.

Andrew.
Oct 4th, 2004, 09:51 PM
I also agree. Molik can be a very tough opponent when her game is on.

Lindsay and Corina won their doubles match 7-6 (6) 6-4. It was pretty tight, and something concerned me there. Lindsay was serving for the first set and broken, and also served in the second for a 4-1 lead, and was broken. Hopefully it's just rust and will get better.

Andrew.
Oct 5th, 2004, 01:49 AM
It looks nice to see Lindsay in a doubles draw again. :) As long as it isn't a negative effect on her health, I hope that she is playing with Corina for the rest of the year.

Jan
Oct 5th, 2004, 07:20 AM
I think I prefer Lindsay just to stick to singles now but she will be keen to play with Corina and its typical of Lindsay to think of other people and support them, which is what she is doing. I do hope they do well and Linds in the singles as well of coursd:angel:

Amelie won so the only way Lindsay can get it here is if Amelie loses in the QF and Lindsay wins the tournament by knocking off Myskina and another top 10 player.... Kremlin Cup will most likely be her best chance to get the no 1 position since Amelie will lose 286 points from the tournament, so it will be like starting from scratch in a way...

She's ranked 3rd because as of the time of the cut-off for the entry list she was the 3rd ranked player in the world behind Amelie and Anastasia

Lindsay beat Jelena earlier this year, as GS said. The score was 7-5 6-3, and if I remember correctly, Lindsay was playing pretty poorly. Jankovic is a good player, but if Lindsay is playing normally she should win pretty easily.

She didn't play very well though, and he attitude wasn't that great either. Her first serve % was down into the 40's. Hopefully this was jsut a bad day. She'll have to raise her level against either of the two Russians, however.

Yeah, Lindsay's attitude wasn't great during that match. I must admit, after the first couple of games and I was loosing interest in the match. I stayed in front of the TV but I was doing some other stuff to; drawing, juggling, pestering my sister - then now and again I would watch a bit and chat: LINDSAY *clap, clap, clap* LINDSAY *clap, clap, clap*

I think she can pull it together vs. Myskina because Lindsay seemed up-beat in the interview afterwards - admitting that her service % was horrible! I think she was shocked at how well Jankovic came out yesturday - got to give her, her dues Jankovic played great from the start, she ran Lindsay all over the place!

Hopefully, Lindsay will have a good day at the office today.

Lindsay was great today (although I only managed to see the second set). Her groundies were working well, serve has improved and most importantly her attitude has improved since yesturday. Lindsay looks a lot happier, relaxed and more contented :yeah:

 I did have a little laugh after the match when Lindsay and Anistasia shook hands, Anistasia was beginning to walk to Lindsay's bench. On the slow motion replay you can see Lindsay saying to Myskina, "you're going to the wrong side" (or something like that), then Lindsay gives Anistasia a friendly tap on the butt with her racket.

And gossip, wan't last year's Filderstadt final also played between the #1 and #2 at that time (Clijsters and Henin-Hardenne)? I think that was this tournament. On that occassion, the lesser deserving #1-ranked player actually won in three sets over a more deserving #1 and a woman that had owned her in recent match-ups - that won't be the same story tomorrow as Lindsay will win in straight sets and prove who the true top player is!!! :D

I don't understand the "Well, mabye play Australia then retire in April" theory going on with Lindsay. Why would you get ready for the season, then not even play half of it. That's just not very smart. And you know that she's going to want to play on the hardcourts then in the summer... Whatever. She changes her mind like every other day, so nothing is for sure until she actually starts entering into/pulling out of tournament. Retirement at the end of the year would really be pretty dumb when you are still THE favorite for slams. The "I want to procreate" argument just annoys me. Lindsay, you'll be able to do that for years to come. So don't rush it, please. If she's starts winning en masse again and wins like 10 titles on the year, she might just go back to the "I love tennis and will play for another 10 years" chorus she was chanting this summer. Personally, I think she'll start next year with the intention of retirement in April, not play Roland Garros, have an urge to play Wimbledon, and end up playing through the US Open. That's probably the most logical option, and would put less amout of pressure on her.

So go Lindsay. Win another 219 matches this indoor season.

Oct 10th, 2004, 03:09 AM
Sorry with my no 1 and 2 comments before I meant it's the first time that a tournament two years in a row has had the no 1 and 2 ranked players playing each other in the final (consecutive years, etc).

As they've said in the past Filderstadt is a tournament which has decided the no 1 ranking on a few occasions.

Technically when you look at the no 1 vs 2 rankings European tournament finals, the no 2 is due to win since a pattern has somewhat emerged :) But I guess it it is Lindsay and Amelie's hands tonight...

If Lindsay plays like she did against Alicia she'd beat Amelie hands down; if she plays like she did against Anastasia it will be another story all together.

Andrew.
Oct 10th, 2004, 03:25 AM
Amelie isn't all that though. There is no reason for Lindsay to fear her. She hasn't taken a set off of Lindsay since 2000. IMO Lindsay didn't play that badly today. Actually from 1-4 down she seemed to really raise her game and play well. Mauresmo's serve was death today. Lindsay jumps on that and she wins.

Frederic
Oct 10th, 2004, 09:45 AM
Andrew, things are different between 2000 and 2004, I think that you can't compare it all. Now Amelie is n1, she is very regular, ok, and Lindsay deserves to be n1, ok... And Amelie didn't take a set since 2000, Lindsay won their last meeting 6/4 6/4, ok... But NOW, Amelie is n1 and don't underrate her, and as everybody know, Amelie is a very psychological player, and being n1 will make her feel better and stronger against tough oponents. Like you, I so much want Lindsay to win this title and the porshe of course, but don't tell us that it will be an easy match!!!! I hope it would be, but I'm not sure...

Elldee
Oct 10th, 2004, 09:50 AM
Amelie doesn't feel the pressure in a tier II event and just wants to prove that she is the world number one, she'll want to win this... to be honest, she's already proven herself in getting to the final.

I think it's perfectly logical to play to April, although Lindsay's putting a lot of pressure on herself to win the AO, because then you just stop, slack off, spending time eating, shopping, walking your dog, spend time with your family, adjust to normality. I think the best thing she could have done was say she's definately not playing 2006, and she has.

Lindsay must be disappointed as she was playing so well, by far well enough to win, and now her victory's tainted. Also, she's said that she'd swap her summer successes for the grandslam and further success, in draws with Dementieva and Kuznetsova in, must make it harder to swallow.

Davenport, who earlier in the year had hinted about the possibility of retirement at season's end, has been surprised at how well she's played this year and her chances of returning to No.1.

"To be honest, I didn't think I would find myself in this position so late in my career - to still be in with a realistic chance of winning slams and a very real possibility of finishing the year at No.1," Davenport said. "I'm very excited to have this opportunity, I love playing indoors. I think in fact it's my best surface, so I'm really motivated at the moment.

"It's very tempting to finish in December, especially if I get to No.1, but I've been playing so well, that it would be nice to have one last decent run at a Slam. So (Australian Open) is on the cards at the moment and possibly playing up until next April. But we'll see."

Davenport Wins Filderstadt as Injury Hampers Mauresmo

FILDERSTADT, Germany - For the second time in her career, Lindsay Davenport has captured the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The No.2 seed was awarded the title on Sunday after World No.1 Amelie Mauresmo was forced to retire from the match following the first set with a left abductor strain, which she sustained in the third game of the match. Davenport had just won the first set, 6-2, when Mauresmo was forced to hang it up.

"It's very unfortunate," Davenport said. "I could tell she was having a hard time moving after the time out. I'm pretty sure I've never won a final in this manner before. It's quite an empty feeling actually."

Mauresmo took a medical time out at 3-1 in the first set, hoping to treat the injury. However, after finishing out the first set, it was clear she would not be able to finish the match.

"I felt a little tear or tightness in the third game pushing off for a shot to my left and it got worse as the set went on," Mauresmo said. "I could hardly move."

Mauresmo, who is scheduled to compete at next week's Kremlin Cup in Moscow, said she plans to fly to Paris and have the injury examined on Monday to determine whether she'll be able to play in Moscow.

"It's too soon to tell how bad it is," Mauresmo said. "I hope it's nothing serious, I don't think so, but it's important to make sure.

"It's very disappointing. It was a good match, very intense. Hopefully as Lindsay said on the court, we'll have more chances to play again in the future."

With her win in the final, Davenport inches even closer to catching Mauresmo for the World No.1 ranking. When the new WTA Rankings are released on Monday, Mauresmo's lead over Davenport will be a mere 15 points.

"I feel good about narrowing the gap to No.1," Davenport said. "Really the end of year ranking means the most to all the players and I'm in a unique position in that I have no points whatsoever to defend since I didn't play last year. The likelihood of it happeneing in the next few weeks is very good, but still my main goal is to play as good as I can for the next couple of weeks."

Like Mauresmo, Davenport is also scheduled to compete next week in Moscow.

Davenport's victory in Filderstadt was her first title at the event since 2001 and her Tour-leading seventh title of the season. She adds Filderstadt to the title arsenal that already includes Tokyo [Pan Pacific], Amelie Island, Stanford, Los Angeles, San Diego and Cincinnati. The American now has 45 career titles.

"It's a huge honor to win this tournament again with such a tough field here," Davenport said. "It would definitely have felt more satisfying beating the No. 1 properly."

In doubles, the top seeded team of Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs won their fifth title as a team this year by defeating the German wildcard tandem of Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Julia Schruff, 63 62.

The win was the sixth overall of Black in 2004 and 18th doubles title of her career. It was the fifth doubles title of the season for Stubbs and the 47th of her career. Black and Stubbs have paired together to also win Sydney, Tokyo [Pan Pacific], Wimbledon and San Diego this year.

GM pisses me off. Lindsay is a deserving #1. People are talking more about Lindsay being non-deserving than they did about Mauresmo, which is fucking rediculous...

I don't think it possible that Daveport could retire next year mid-season, either after Oz or in April. Why bother training in the off-season just to play a few more months? If she starts playing again next season, she'll definitely want to continue on for Wimbledon and the US Open, at least. Hopefully she'll ploay a complete 2005 with the YEC included. :)

That's exactly what I was saying. No way in hell she'll put herself through intense training off-season for just four months on tour.

I think she will play a very reduced schedule, just slams and US events, skip Roland Garros and most of the clay season, and retire right after the US Open.

Elske and everyone else thanks for the wonderful pictures. I am so proud of Lindsay but sad for Amelie but still a win for Lindsay.

I really don't know what to think on the retirement front. Sometimes I think she will retire at the end of this year but mostly I think she may continue for awhile anyway.

This is a truly great thread guys.

I'll tell you what to do. Enjoy every match of Lindsay (as I imagine you're doing). Let's just do that! She's playing AMAZING right now, it'd been YEARS since Lindsay played this good, and so confident. Let's keep that attitude!:bounce:

How good was the point where Lindsay got the break in the first game? I was amazed! Lindsay would have won that match whether Amelie was injured or not.

I don't see why it would be crazy for Lindsay to train for the new season and stop in january, if she's achieved what she wants at the australian open why drag herself around the world and defend all her summer points when she can stay at home getting a tan?

Because she can defend her summer tournaments while at home tanning.

Because she can defend her summer tournaments while at home tanning. That is so funny and true! Easily my favorite quote of the day. ;)

Davenport has said it many times. While she rarely enjoys travelling around the world and playing on uncomfortable surfaces like clay, she still loves playing the tournaments in the states. And she's admitted that she's become re-motivated over her tennis recently due to her excellent form and results. Because of those reasons, I don't see it logical for her to stop after Oz.

Btw GS, could you briefly describe that amazing point for me and all others who weren't fortunate enough to see the match? :D

Yeah, that would be nice because I only got to see the match from 4-2 to Lindsay - it was pretty much over by the time I got home!

Umm, okay, I'll try.

Amelie serves a great second serve deep up the T and Lindsay struggles to get her raquet on it but it creeps over the net and short into the court. Amelie takes control of an impressive rally running Lindsay from side to side, but a drop shot by Amelie gives Lindsay a short easier ball and they get into an even rally, then Amelie plays a very deep ball and Lindsay is on the back foot and gives Amelie a short ball, Amelie is reasonable far in the court and runs Lindsay around with great hard deep balls, Lindsay showcases her great movement and scrambles to get a deep low ball which she angles perfectly across the court right next to Amelie who stuggles to get it at the net. It's hard to describe the last bit, but it was very impressive.

They showed that point on CNN's World Sport - it was awesome- you thought she was out of it and then she did as GS said the low cross court forehead perfectly.
