Wow- I'm blown away!!! I sat in the second row on the floor right on the baseline, and it was an incredible match!!!! Anna looked so good!! Very few unforced errors, one double fault, moving well, and serving well!!! Jen looked a little sloppy, and had tons of problems with her first serve. She looked like she gained a little weight actually!
Anna was very intense, and although Jen was serious too, Anna just seemed to want it more.
I spoke to Denise Capriati after the match and she was very nice! My boyfriend also talked to Stefano and he was also very friendly. And I got Anna's autograph after the match!!!! She looked very happy and the win seemed to mean a lot to her even though it was an exhibition match. My boyfriend also chatted briefly with Alla after the match, but she had little to say....
Anyways, it was a dream night and an amazing match!!!
Congrats to Anna!!!!
This is a good sign for 2002!!!!

Way to go Anna! Seee, she can come back! Watch out, for Anna!
Dec 15th, 2001, 02:43 AM
1) Congrats to Anna! I am SHOCKED! Come back strong and shut people like me up!
2) Jenn looked like she gained weight?!?! That is NOT a good sign. She looked pretty buff to me. A bit thicker in the middle, but if that's just a lot of ab work, all to the good.
Either Anna has recovered her form, or Jenn has hopelessly lost hers. AC-centuate the POS-itive. Anna Kournikova is at least back enough to upset a seed or two at OZ. Wish her OZ tuneups were more heavyweight. Exos and T5's. But if she took Jenn, even a Jenn at only 90%, than a good solid 'pre-season' win.
Dec 15th, 2001, 02:48 AM
Anna looks ready for the Autralian season.
Dec 15th, 2001, 02:53 AM
Hi Volcana- Although I am a Jen fan, I must tell you that Jen's tummy is not bigger as the result of extra ab work!
In an interview with the local paper, Jen said that she has been taking some time off, and just started practicing a few days ago. I think there's still plenty of time for her to get in peak form for OZ, but she looked out of sorts in this match. She also said in her interview that she was nervous to play in front of her "home crowd" in Tampa, and she looked nervous especially in the warm-up, missing overheads badly and whacking her serve all over the place. Her return in the match wasn't all that great either. Anna's return was quite good and her forehand was just as consistent as her backhand. I guess only time will tell......
Dec 15th, 2001, 02:55 AM
WOW...I was just saying in another post that Miss capriati will regain #1 spot after Sydney because she has almost no points to defend there! I'm not sure anymore!!! If she loses to Kournikova who has 2 winnings in the last 6 months, I wonder if she will even make the 3rd round there!!!
I'm shocked!!!! If she doesn't put herself together quickly, she will be out of the top 10 after FO!!!!!
Dec 15th, 2001, 02:57 AM
well done Anna great stuff girl
Anna always beats Jen anyway
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:09 AM
Well, that's too bad for Jen. But, Anna does seem to beat Jen a lot for some reason. Oh well. I am not too concerned. I'm not so sure about Jen gaining weight. She looked good in the pics I saw of her practicing. Well, we'll just see in Australia. That is when it will matter.
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:23 AM
Anna seems very determined to get back on top, congrats to her!!!
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:25 AM
I just got back from the match as well.
~ Anna serve well, hmmmmm, if you call no double faults serving well then yes. But her first serve percentage was not that good, and her second serve was very bad.
~ The crowd was definitely for JENN right from the start. Anna came out first, she got cheers and cat calls... then Jenn came out... of course they announced "our very own, From Tampa" and she got a huge ROAR and a standing ovation! It was great.
~ I said the crowd was for Jenn but the line judges were for Anna. Some of the calls were soooo bad and ALL went in Anna's favor.
~ I sat in the lower bowl, kind of in the corner.
There was a group of drunks behind me that talked the entire match! They even screamed out on a really bad call, "OUT, OUT" so loud that Anna kind of hesitated.
~ Jenn was overhitting a lot.
~ I thought they both looked good, but xcrtbckhnd
you had way better seats then me!
-- Anna took the set from the beginning she was up 4-0 in the first.
---> afterwards, they signed three balls each and shot them in the stands. The person that caught them got to hit with them! I didn't catch one!
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:34 AM
This must be some kind of joke.
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:40 AM
I just came in from the match as well. I have to agree, J.Cap looks a lot heavier now than she has on TV all year. The gut was really hanging out and she seemed very slow. A few times, I couldn't believe she was wearing a mid-drift bearing outfit, she was busting out all over the place. I like her and I don't want to offend her fans, but it was pretty shocking how too-small her outfit was. Anna is every bit at hot as she is on TV and then some, and she had some serious diamond earrings on, they looked about 2 carats each. I thought she did look very solid, I was surprised. The first set, Jen looked terrible, her serves were a nightmare and Anna was up 4-0 in no time. The second set was a little closer and more competitive with Jen getting a break, but Anna really held her own, I was really, really surprised. Frankly, I didn't think either player seemed to care much about the outcome.
Was it just me, or did Anna really want to get in and out of there? Every changeover, she'd go to the chair look at her watch, wipe her face, have a swig, wipe her face, have a swig and then look at her watch like she had a flight to catch or something! Then she'd get up and sort of look at Jen like, let's get going I want out of here! Some guy behind me yelled "Go to the gym" at Jen Cap at one point, I was really embarrassed, but I doubt she heard it (I hope she didn't). I was about 11 rows up on the side where they sat, mid-court. It was not like a professionally played competitive match, but Anna's serves looked good. Jen Cap didn't seem like she cared too much about the outcome, so I don't think her fans should panic, though she didn't look like she was in too good shape.
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:46 AM
No, it's no joke! I drove almost 2hrs to see a match that lasted a little over an hour.
I will probably never spend that kind of money on an exhibition again. I'm now looking forward to going to the new one in Sarasota and the Amelia Island one! I guess I wasn't sure what to expect in an exhibition. I have never seen one on tv or went to one. Jenn just didn't seem into it at all.
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:51 AM
I agree that the line calls were terrible, but it seemed both players got screwed by them, but I didn't keep track. The crowd was really pro-Jen (except for that guy behind me!). I should have hung around like you guys and tried to get an autograph! I saw Stefano before the match started, but I don't know what the other parents look like. He was sitting low until right before the match started, then he walked up like he was going into a skybox and I didn't see him again.
Dec 15th, 2001, 03:53 AM
Celeste ~~~ your right on w/ Anna wanting to get in and out of there!! She didn't waste any time with changeovers! What is up with people yelling things!! It was horrible! I still think Jenn looked ok, I never liked her outfits and always thought she hanged out. But she didn't seem over weight to me.
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:02 AM
Exhibition or not, Jenn should have won. Is this the season of exhibition upsets or what?
I hope that whatever caused this SHOCKING result gets fixed fast. Jenn has a lot to defend at Oz.
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:03 AM
Maybe it was one of those things where if she would only wear one or two more sizes up, she would have looked ok, but that tummy was really hanging out, worse than on TV. There was a lot of screaming! Anna got cat-called a lot there right at the beginning, I felt sorry for her...almost. You can't feel sorry for someone that gorgeous. I was hoping she wouldn't look that good in person, or I could degrade her looks like she looks cheap or something. No way, she is 100% classy hot! Don't worry, a "real" match is much better, don't let this deter you from going to a real tournament. I've seen straight set whitewashes in real tournaments, they are much, much better than this one.
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:06 AM
And with all sincerity, Congrats, Anna K! You seemed to be on your way to a GREAT PERFORMANCE at Oz.
Blessings And Aloha
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:11 AM
Anna always plays well in Exo because there is no pressure on her. If you look at her exhibition results, you can obviously see she plays better in exhibition.
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:32 AM
Maybe, but though she looked solid, if someone was playing to win against her tonight, she would have been killed if she hadn't raised her game a lot. That other poster is right, she didn't double fault much at all, but the serves weren't like incredible by any stretch of the imagination. You'd expect a good amount of aces on carpet, but I can only recall one, from Anna, right after she got a bad call and seemed mad.
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:35 AM
I find the posts in this thread interesting because so many people have different opinions about the match, yet everyone who attended the match seems to agree on a couple of things:
1. Jennifer played badly. Indeed, Jennifer really seems to have problems playing against Kournikova. I remember in January this year in an exho in Hong Kong, Capriati is up 6-3, 5-3 and loses the next 10 games because she lost her mental concentration. For some reason, Anna's fame seems to intimate her quite a bit.
2. Anna's incredibly beautiful. As if we didn't know that already!
3. Anna played fairly well. I agree with those that say Anna plays well in exho's because there is no real pressure on her to win. However, if that is the case, why did she lose she badly to Seles a few weeks ago? I saw that match on tv and Anna didn't even try to make it competitive. True, Anna hasn't beaten Seles in years, but at least their matches have been competitive. In Denver, Anna didn't even try, which is not like her at all. Something had to be going on there.
4. Are exhos a real measure of how well a player is going to do in a real tennis tournament? I really have to wonder that since exhos are primarily played for charity, money or in some cases, players use them for extra match practice to try things they normally wouldn't in a WTA match. Remember last year, Capriati lost to Kournikova in Hong Kong and then a couple of weeks later took the Austrailan crown. Similarly, Anna played an excellent exho match against Davenport in Dec. 99 and beat Lindsay 6-1 in the third. Even Lindsay was impressed. However, when the two met up @ the Oz a couple of weeks later, Linsday won in straights. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't feel that exhos are a good indication of how well a player will play in a real tennis match.
Anyway, I'm glad those who got to go seemed to have a good time. For Jen fans, don't take this loss so hard. It's only an exho and Jen has some problems with Kournikova anyway (I think the fame thing is really intimidating to Jenn). For Anna fans, this is a good win for her, even if the match was not quite up to professional standards, especially when you consider the whitewash she got from Seles a couple of weeks ago.
BTW, Anna probably wanted to get out of there because she is playing Coetzer tomorrow in Detroit.
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:49 AM
Great job Anna!
Dec 15th, 2001, 04:58 AM
Capriati's fans should not take this hard at all. While I do think she looked pudgier than usual and seemed slow, it was pretty clear she did not care whether she won or lost. She did not "tank" the match. She rattled off 3 games in a row at one point with some hints of J. Cap of earlier this year where Anna had no answers. I have learned in the past that TV and in-person are very, very different. To be honest, she looked quite fat tonight compared to TV, but who knows. I met Conchita Martinez once and she was drop-dead gorgeous, not what you would expect from what she looks like on TV.
Dec 15th, 2001, 05:12 AM
First, Anna has always played well against Jennifer. Her game matches well against Jennifer's game. I would not read anything from this, just like you didn't read anything from Anna's Denver loss. In three weeks time we'll know much more.
Dec 15th, 2001, 06:28 AM
I'm glad that some other posters went to this match- too bad we didn't hang out, but anyways...
There were definitely some bad calls going on, particularly second serve faults from both players that were called in, but it was still a win by Anna!!
The biggest impressions for me from the match were:
1) Jen has put on some weight in the tummy, if not elsewhere. I was watching a tape of her semi-final vs. Dementieva at the Ericcson just for fun a few hours before this match, and she is definitely not in the same shape that got to the OZ final or to the finals of that tourni....
2) Anna did seem to favor her foot and right leg at times (stretching quickly, etc.) , but I think that she is trying to be especially attentive to her body and not re-injur herself. Good scrappiness and definitely her backhand was working well.
3) Anna's serve wasn't big, but she didn't self-destruct, and she served two aces in the match (maybe three?).
4) Capriati's return of serve wasn't there at all nor was her first serve.
5) The size of the court was smaller than in tour events, and sometimes it seemed that Jen couldn't run full out to her forehand to return an angle from Anna due to the size of the court? I'm wondering if anyone else noticed this?
6) Anna really made very few unforced errors. She still maintained a very aggressive style of play, but made less silly mistakes than Jen. (She did miss one gimmy forehand on her serve, but won the game anyway on the next point)
7) Jen's parents are both very nice!!!
8)Anna is very pretty and although there was a swarm of people trying to get her autograph (she couldn't sign them all), she signed for me because I said "great match, really well played" and she noticed me and signed my program. Other attendees were just shouting "Anna!!, i love you, etc....."- She seemed to notice someone (ME) who appreciated her tennis, not just her looks.
9)Anna is extremely thin and at times I thought she almost looked fragile. She could probably benefit from putting on some extra muscle? Maybe not though, that could just be her body type????
10)Anna and Jen were very friendly with each other after the match, chatting and having fun while playing a few points with people who got to hit a few balls with them after the match.
I plan to go the Miami like I've done in other years, but it was still fun to see these two hit it out and I think a win (or a loss), exhibition or otherwise, does something for a player's confidence and is a good experience to learn from. Jen showed many flashes of athleticism and hit many good shots, but she just seemed a little rusty and out of shape. She admitted that she hadn't been practicing until just recently and I think Anna's other exhibition matches helped her prepare well for this match.
Dec 15th, 2001, 09:04 AM
Well done Anna!!!! I know she has everything to be a top 10 player, and I'm sure she will get there.
And of course she's gorgeous...it's no use to say that she should train some more, to get some more muscles. It's Anna's way of playing, you can't change it. She's a very agressive player, and she doesn't need that much power for it.
Dec 15th, 2001, 09:19 AM
Reading ANYTHING into an exhibition result is an absolute joke. I'm still laughing at all the fallout from Navratilova's matches vs. Sanchez and Seles. Like those matches would have been close in a real WTA event. Sure
The one exception to this were the comments about Jen's weight, which are ominous if true. As for Anna, lets wait until the REAL season starts before seeing how her exhibition tour round the world left her well prepared for Oz.
Some interesting posts to read here, and congrats to Anna!

first thanks a lot for everybody who went to the match and shared their observations http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/kao/otn/pmath.gif....
as for anna seeming to be in a hurry to finish the match, in the past years i've watched her, she had always been the faster player to get out of the chair after a break, usually the first one ready to get the game going, and doesn't waste any time between points...stops after the call and gets to the service line....ready to return or serve a new point right away........i think it's just her type of play, sometimes i think she rushes a little too much http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/kao/otn/pclapping.gif, but oh well...
and since she seemeed to be playing better than jen, maybe she thought it would be good to keep the momentum going....either that or she wanted to get someplace else as quickly as she could http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/kao/otn/pfinger.gif....
sergei's birthday http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/kao/otn/pblob2.gifwas December 13http://www.contrabandent.com/pez//kao/otn/plaugh3.gif.....
also she has a match the next day against amanda...maybe she wanted to get as much rest and practice as she couldhttp://www.freakygamers.com/smilies/s2/kao/otn/pflowerhat1.gif.....
i agree exhibitions don't always indicate how a player will play when the tour starts....but anna hasn't played that much in the tour this year so we'll take whatever match we can....and with this win, things seem promising http://www.contrabandent.com/pez//kao/otn/pblob5.gif.....whether she does well in the tournies leading to the OZ open and in the slam itself where there's more pressure is completely up to her....
good win girlhttp://www.freakygamers.com/smilies/s2/kao/otn/bloblaugh.gif! keep it up!http://community.kournikova.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
Thanks for the written accounts everyone who went.
It probably isn't a great indicator for what will happen in Australia but it's great to hear/read that Anna's got some of her game back. Whew!
Dec 15th, 2001, 05:17 PM
I agree completely with Rollo. You really can't think much into exhibitions, as they are generally no indication as to how the outcome would be in a real tour match.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the reports from everyone here who was able to see the match. I like Anna, so I am pleased to hear that she was playing good tennis at least. Hopefully when the 2002 season starts she will be fit, and capable of playing some high level tennis when the pressure is on her.
Dec 15th, 2001, 06:22 PM
Thats such a great win for Anna
Also great confidence for 2002!!
Go Anna win Aukland 2002 and then have a great Ozzie!
Hey moon! Despite popular belief, Conchita is hot in person! I would kill for her skin tone, she was so, so soft in the face with beautiful eyes. TV does wonders for some players, shafts other players. Anna, though, is better in person than in pics, I couldn't believe it!
Dec 16th, 2001, 01:24 PM
Celeste,About Conchita--I agree with everything you said. I follow her around like a little puppy this year at RG. Can't wait to see her next year.
I guess her looks don't play well on TV. Same thing with Alex Corretja. I saw him in person, and WOW! I've been raving about him ever since. Maybe it's coz they're Spanish??
btw--I've seen Anna in person too, and she looks exactly the same to me.
