Yesterday I saw an incredible match. It was Elena Dementieva vs Amelie Mauresmo. This match really made me sit up and take notice of this young lady. I can't believe I didn't see her sooner.
Despite her serve being constantly broken, she kept fighting back. Despite the fact that she had 2 injury timeouts, she kept fighting. Despite hardly being able to breathe late in the last set, she kept going. Then she completely broke Amelie's spirit be destroying her 7-1 in the tiebreak.
This battle, against all odds, against one of the favourites to win the tournament, against a woman who was playing for a definate spot at world #1, really grabbed my attention.
Not only that, but I loved her game, too. Her firecracker forehand, her beautiful volleying (no doubt as a result of her extensive doubles experience). OK, so she has a rotten serve. But she's managed to built her game around it so that even when she commits 15 DF's, she can still come up with quality play, and win a tough match. I think that if she could build up a weapon serve, she could be one of the best players in the game.
Good work Lena! And good luck! You've got a new fan in me ^_^.
