Organisers of the US Open have apologised to Serena Williams for a bad line call during her quarter-final loss to American Jennifer Capriati.
Portuese umpire Mariana Alves, who will not officiate again at the this year's event, upset Williams by incorrectly overuling a call.

"I called Serena to apologise for the call," said Arlen Kantarian, chief executive of Professional Tennis.

"The overrule was a clear mistake. Serena handled the situation so well."

US Open tournament director Jim Curley confirmed Alves will not be in the chair again at Flushing Meadows.

"It was a mistake but she is a very experienced umpire and mistakes do get made out there," said Curley.

"Alves was under consideration for another women's match, but we decided that it was in the best interests of the tournament that she stand down."

Williams claimed the decision, in the crucial opening game of the deciding set, cost her a place in the last four.

And the third seed insisted she was on the wrong end of a host of calls made by Alves.

"It wasn't just that point, that's the thing. I know my shots, I know my balls were in," said Williams.

"I know in the last game those balls were in as well. So it's like, what do you do? You just got to keep fighting.

"I'm very angry and bitter right now. I feel cheated and robbed."
