The $565,000 event marks the last tournament for players to accumulate points for the season ending Sanex Championships in Munich, Germany. Conchita Martinez hopes new coach can get her going again!
Conchita Martinez has hired two time French Open champion Sergi Bruguera as her new coach, heres her interview.
Conchita, why the new coach?
I 've been getting my can kicked indoors, and I have not reached one quarterfinal since I joined the tour.
Does the recent successes of Anke Huber and newcomers Kimiko Date and Su Wei-Hsieh frustrate you?
No.....I mean its good for womens tennis. I expect it from Huber and Date, but its inspiring from someone like Su Wei because I had never heard of her before.
So why Sergei? what do think he can do for you?
Sergei has always been a great fighter who never gives up. I can get down on myself sometimes, but Sergei has been good with improving my outlook on my game....my intensity.
Has he made any severe changes in your game?
No, he just told me to stop trying to outhit these big power hitters, and use my variety, spins and angles to wear them down instead............you know, back to basics.
Ahh! like when you first joined the tour --- so why did you stop in the first place?
When I first came, I had to qualify for everything, by the first round of the tournament I was exhausted because I had already played a few matches. Then I got depressed because I kept losing close matches.
Well I hope it all works out for you Conchita, thanks for the interview!
Thank you, and you're welcome.

Hey everyone, you're going to have to bear with me this week. I'm taking my finals this week, and trying to get ready for Australia and there is just bunches of stuff that I have to do, so this week will be really slow in terms of results and such.
And as for the things that have occurred this past week, I've been reall stressed out lately and well there isn't a particular person that is the cause of all the trouble contrary to popular belief.
I've found someone to run doubles in the new season and that will take a lot of trouble off my hands!
So results will be slow this week, just bear with me! Thanks!

It's a shame you have none of the qualities of your namesake.

Qualifier Hantuchova defeats US Open champion Hingis
Qualifier Daniela Hantuchova has caused the biggest upset on Day 2 of the Ladies Generali Open in Linz today, disposing of 2nd seed and US Open champion, Martina Hingis in 3 sets.
Here is an interview with Hantuchova:
Q: Congratulations Daniela, how does it feel like a win like that?
A: Thanks, it's a very special moment for me at this moment because it's probably the biggest win of my career, I'm very happy at how I played out there today.
Q: What did you expect coming in? Did you think you could beat her?
A: Well, I know she's very smart but her strokes are not very powerful, not like Venus, Lindsay or Serena. I knew I could try and overpower her. I was very nervous in the first set but once I broke in the 2nd set, I was very confident and just played my game.
Q: Former Australia Jelena Dokic defeated Hingis 2 years ago, when she was a qualifier, did that give you inspiration?
A: Yeah, a little, I mean, I remember watching that match. Today I thought if she could do it, then I could too so I just tried my hardest and things worked out. She's probably not as tough as I expected but she's still a great opponent and a great tennis player.
Q: In your opinion, what is the difference between Hingis and Venus?
A: Venus is a great hitter of the ball, Martina is a great tennis player. I think Martina's more complete.
Q: You were looking for a doubles partner, have you found one yet?
A: Not really although I will probably team up with Barbara Schett next year. I'll see, I still have plenty of time.
Thanks, and call me Dani!

here are some comments Venus made during her press conference:
It was hard to play Chanda today because we're both Americans and I want all of the Americans on the tour to do well, but unfortunately someone had to lose. She played some spectacular tennis today, her forehand in particular was very strong and accurate.
I'm just glad to be able to win a match this week in Linz after last week's first round loss and I'm sad that Martina Hingis lost her match today. We actually have a very good partnership despite the rumors. I wish her luck in Munich and I'm pleased she'll play singles next season. My wrists are beginning to hurt again, not so badly like in 2000, but enough to feel pain and I do hope this doesn't continue to irritate my play this week. All I want is to be healthy.

Conchita Martinez of Spain moved into the quarterfinals of the 2001 Ladies Linz Open, with a surprisingly routine 6-3, 6-3 win over Venus Williams, heres her interview.
Conchita, great Win today over Venus, how does it feel to make your first quarterfinal appearance of the season?
It feels great, I can't believe it.
You won that long match with Schett that went to three tiebreakers yesterday, and today you win in two steady sets against Venus, can you explain how you won both matches?
I have to give much credit to Sergei Bruguera, he has helped me so much and dis is only our first week working together. Basically I play de same way both matches, Schett was slamming everything back very hard, but I think my variety and moonballs wore her down in de end. With Venus, I was lucky she was a little off today, and I play very well, mixing things up, you always need luck when you play Venus.
You play Iroda Tulyaganova in the quarterfinals, whats your game plan for her?
Well it will be de same, I will try to use my variety, spins, moonballs, slices and angles to open up the court for me to be the aggressive one.
You have won three matches in a row now, we hope you can win the next three, Good luck Conchita!
Gracias, I will need it!.

Tough loss Conchita, what happened?
Well, I went down a early break in de third and not get it back. Iroda play very well today.
You seemed to have mastered her gameplan in the second set, does her game bother yours?
Everyones game bothers me (laughs), Iroda hits hard, serves hard, like most other players now. I don't mind as much now because Sergei has gotten me in better shape to run de balls down. I just need to keep improving on my game, my new serve will get better in time.
New serve, you said in your earlier interview that Sergei did not make any drastic changes
It's not drastic!
Okay ...... when do you find out if you've qualified for the Championships?
Oh I won't qualify unless a lot of people get sick(laughs), really though, I probably needed to make final to qualify? but its okay, if I keep playing this way I'll be in next year.
Thats for sure, good luck in the future and thanks again for the interview Conchita!

Though Lindsay crashed out of the finals 2-6 4-6 to Patty Schynder, some one she has beaten twice before, Lindsay is glad for her wonderful performance this tournament.
In fact, though Lindsay has lost her singles finals, she still takes home a title, her first of any sort this season. It is a doubles crown with her partner, Natasha Zvereva. They won 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(7), in a nailbiting and tight match. It was an amazing topspin lob by Natasha at match point that allowed Lindsay and Natasha to capture their first doubles crown together, and gain the number 1 spot in doubles!
Though Lindsay has not qualified for singles at the Sanex Championships, Lindsay and Natasha will still be going to Munich on the strength of thier doubles performance.
Lindsay's amazing performance will take her into the top 25 when the rankings are released on next week. Lindsay looks to improve on her form, and hopefully go one step further in the future.

PATTY SCHNYDER TAKES FIRST TITLE!!!
After a series of dissapointing losses in singles and mixed success in doubles, Schnyder fans have patiently been pulling their hair out, but now Schnyder tells all.....
Q. So patty, a surprise tournament win - you do anything different this week?
A.of course I'm one of those players that learns from my mistakes, I think it can be quite dangerous to come out all guns blazing right from the start im now got enough defeats under my belt to realise my strengths and weaknesses. This week i felt it was neccessary to serve and volley angainst the players i was playing and it worked a treat.
Q. So this is the corner turned now is it..
A. Well we will see, as long as i dont have to tank a match against Anna K soon- i hope the winning streak will continue.
Q. The doubles success has weaned a bit over the last few weeks, are you hopeful of getting that back on track.
A. Well yes basically ive been quite focused on my singles recently and perhaps not putting in the practice required, ive put in my commitments for the early part of next year and myself and Petra are playing different tournies coz im not highly ranked enough, but hopefully after that well team up again to continue this years success. I definatley think we have a shot at the chase.
Q. A word about your opponant today?
A. Yes totally i really should have said sonner. Lindsay is such a class act and to beat her today was probably the highlight of my career so far and being in a final was great. She hits that ball with such venom and accuracy its sometimes hard to stay focussed as the balls go flying past you but i think i just did enough to edge it today. Lindsay is my tip for the chase later this year i must add.
Thanks patty and well done on your first title.!!!
