She smiled and was actually joyful about how she felt normal out there for the first time...

We are all still trying to figure it out.

It was a little akward watching that- she was obviously addressing "things" in her life and how these things have been reflected in her tennis this past year. She made it seem as though she's definitely on the road to over-coming her obstacles and that something about this moment (or the match) was part some sort of stepping stone in getting back- That's how I interpreted it anyway. In addition to her setbacks I also think Vee is "FEELIN' IT"... I hate to echoe anything coming from Tracy's mouth, but things aren't the same and Venus knows it. It's exciting watching Vee get passionate and just letting go. I think the emotion from the match carried over to the interview- who knows, this moment could be far more significant than we think. Honestly, I've never enjoyed Venus as much as I did tonight. I have my own doubts about Vee, but just think of how great of a story it would be to see Venus back on top- Only a fool would totaly count her out. Vee is currently doing some major battling, both internally and on court. Forget technique, if Vee can get her mental toughness that takes care of about 90% most of her problems.

I'm just hearing her post match interview on the court. I can't believe she said those things after the match. I mean she didn't play well at all. The emotion was there, but not the greatness. I sure hope she brings it against Lindsay...

You know what really shocked me tonight? Venus' reaction when she broke at 5-5! I nhave never seen Venus react that way to anything! It really meant a lot to her. Then she went and lost her serve again. Oh boy.

Itwas nice to see Venus express herself that way but I like her more with her steely countenane. Believe it or not, it's one of her weapons. When your opponent has no idea what's going on with you, it keeps them wondering. It worked against Justine.
With so few of her weapons at their best Venus needs to keep her opponents guessing, but who can blame her for expressing herself like that? She's kept a lot bottled up for a long time.

You guys must don't watch Venus very often. Venus while not playing her best did not play that badly. i think of several matches just off the top of my head that Venus has played a lot worse than that while she was dominating and still managed to win. Yeah she made a lot of errors on her forehand. She always does she always will. The commentators talked about all the errors she made but never commented the many times she slammed an ace or big first serve when it was 15-30 or down a break point. All the times she was running from side to side getting balls. Why? because venus and serena are struggling now and that's the story. Venus even when she was dominating always struggled with her forehand and second serve. I guarantee you if this exact same match happened in 2000 or 2001 the commentators would have said it shows how great a player Venus is that she is still able to win not playing her best. Because the story is that the sisters aren't dominating, it's oh she won't make it back to the top with that. The Davenport match will be very interesting. In that first set, Lindsay was having trouble with Bovina' serve, Venus serve's harder. Bovina ran a lot of balls down, Venus runs faster. Lindsay in the second set really started too move Bovina around. But we all know she won't be able to do that to Venus and even if she does, venus likes to run. They keep saying Venus better elevate her game to have any chance, the exact same can be said for Lindsay. Lindsay was slumping her shoulders and it was like 4-4 in the first agains Bovina tonight. If she even thinks about getting negative against Venus, she'll lose. It will certainly be a war on Monday.

I have hundreds of tapes of Venus and I have seen Venus express herself on court many times. I really don't know what people want from Venus. Serena, Marie, JCap, and a few other girls had a lot of errors. Why this attack on Venus game. She won, just like Justin did a few days ago, with lots of errors.
Venus is a very emoional woman. Anybogy remember her speech on court after her first US Open?. She was blasted by the media then. I don't think they like her because of that speech.

Exactly. I want the Ice Queen of tennis back. I want the unflappable Goddess who doesnt let anything or anyone phase her even if the score is 0-6 0-5 Lov-40
because she WILL win that match becuse losing is a word she doesnt even know. Thats the venus I want to see back. Of course times change and really the most interesting and true thing tracy said last night is that beyond the injuries and outside interests that they have lost a sister and who knows how something like that can affect you. It hasn't even been that long. So I will cheer and hope that Venus gets it together personally and on the court as well.

I wish I could tell you exactly what she said but something about feeling normal on the court for the first time (big smiles from Vee)......something about going through a lot and just being happy to be there.

Sorry I can't be more specific. But normally its a generic I played/didn't play that well sorta speach.

Great Post!

It wasn't so much that no one wants to hear criticism of Venus, but Tracy and Ted didn't do anything but criticize her. At one of her games when she breaks Chanda, Venus gets to a swinging forehand out wide, all the way back to the backhand side to hit another great shot and then finishes it off with a winner once Chanda made a stab and it landed short but did they say anything, NO silence about the point and Venus' play. It use to be only Shriver made me want to mute the TV but yesterday Tracy and Ted took the cake.
And we've all heard her parents can't take her any farther, blah blah blah. I think that while Richard and Oracene are listed as their coaches, neither one of them is out on court with them say like Carlos Rodriguez with Justine. Venus and Serena have hitting partners and I'm sure she's trying to correct that wonky forehand and second serve. She's just got to keep trying. Change comes hard when you've won 4 grand slams and been in 10 singles finals. Hopefully she'll get it together but even if she doesn't she'll always be my fave. GO VENUS!

People are shocked at Venus' expressions and emotion on court is a sign of fear for their favs. They don't want the old Venus to return, the venus that could beat everyone in sight when she is only at 75%, remember Justine and Venus in Amelia Island? Justine up 6-2,4-0 and Venus started to ride her ass all the way to the finish line?

I think this thread was created out of fear that Venus is back!!! Come win or lose, you have to admit that Venus is getting better with each match she plays. I mean it is a recovery and she is taken it the way lindsay and chanda took theirs when they first came back from surgery. Get over it, Venus is coming back and by next season OZopen, I expect all of the top players to be playing, creating the already enjoyable drama on court. Now a third round match is Venus and Chanda and a fourth round is Lindsay/Venus, that makes it fun.

:clap2: People are forgetting the traumatic year Venus has had also  Technically dissecting her forehead is pointless. We can all sit behind out computer screens and criticize her until the cows come home, and it won't make a difference. Bottom-line, she played like SHIT and still won the match in straight sets.

Why can't you people understand, she was not talking about her match per say. Geeze some of you guys are so dense.

Thank You!!! :wavey:

It was quite obvious that her words
had more to do with than just the match.

I too thought she was about to cry!

I don't care what anyone says,
she has the desire and heart and that
was certainly on display and very real.

Like Federer, I don't think Venus puts
on for the crowd so when you do see
that emotion it is very very real!

I think it's a mistake to count
her out against Lindsay but, whatever. :)

Go Venus! :yeah:

I guess Venus is still getting over her sisters traumatic death. Some people heal faster, and some take longer to heal. I think her statement about being normal on court, was that she was maybe finally thinking about tennis on court and not about all the other emotional stuff in her life, while playing on court.

She thanked her parents, and other people in her players box. (so maybe, she had wanted to quit tennis, but they kept on encouraging her). I have noticed that she has been so much emotional this US open. From the "thank you" that she tells the whole tennis fans after she wins, and then her speech and her game yesterday.

I think even if Venus loses the US Open, her fans should realize that the old Venus may be around the corner. :)

Thanks for saying that.

Anyone who's experienced the death of someone close to them know that it stays with you day in and out AND we're coming up on the anniversary of Yetunde's murder. Venus seems like the type to hold things close to her heart. Remember when their grandma passed away during the 2002 Oz open and Venus mentioned it after hers and Serena's match?

I don't care if she wins the Open. Will I be ecstatic if she does? Hell yeah, but at this point it doesn't matter anymore. I'm glad she feels healthy and like she's at that point where she's normal, whatever that means to her, not the rest of us.

Why are people so suprised Vee was emotional and pumping her fist? I enjoyed it and hope that Venus continues winning doing so. I am not going to lie that I like her somewhat steely, but with all the injuries and setbacks of the past year Venus deserves to do what she feels.

I always felt that Venus holding her true emotions close to her neckline was something that prevented her from defeating Serena in at least one of those slam finals. Of course Serena was playing some of the best tennis of her life, but Vee did have a few chances.

The comment about how she finally felt, "normal" on the court was refreshing. She was simply saying that she is starting to feel injury free which is allowing her to not stress on court so much about her health. I think some people misinterpreted her comments thinking she was to referring to her play as normal.

Whatever happens in the 4th round, Venus is on her journey to recovery. I expect good things in the future. I can feel it happening soon. Good Luck Venus!!
